Hereford, Texas (806) January, 2018 Hope During this Christmas season I read a devotional that I spent some time thinking about; it was based on Genesis 28:15, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. The message is given by God, to Jacob, as he found himself in a strange and lonely place in his flight from Esau. Jacob is in the depths of despair when God promises Jacob, that he would give Jacob and his descendants the land on which you are lying and that All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. It is through Jacob that the Messiah came to us and promises his believers that where I am, you will also be. The hope of joy in the future has the power to bring each of us from the depths of despair. Jacob was comforted knowing that his life would make a difference, that there was a point to his suffering. As a younger person I didn t see how this was comforting a promise so far in the future. It makes more sense to me now. There is joy in knowing that somewhere down the road the world perhaps will be a better place because I was in it. But hope comes in many forms; hope perhaps on a smaller scale, with a faster turnaround time, yet equally important. Hope, that these new shoe inserts will keep my feet from hurting. Hope, that I will get better at that new computer program and my job will be a bit easier. Hope, that when I finish school, I will have more opportunities. This list is infinite, each person has their own plethora of hopes and dreams. How would we get through without hope? The truth is we can t. It is so powerful. One of the symptoms of clinical depression is hopelessness ; a feeling that nothing matters and nothing will ever be better, or ever change. If you have ever had that feeling, it is awful. There are no words to describe that place. Hope is truly as necessary as the air we breathe. For family members and staff, it is especially important that we remember this for our residents. We need to think about how we can give them hope. It may be something small. Perhaps they have not enjoyed the meals for a couple of days; knowing that a loved one is bringing them a cheeseburger from Sonic on Tuesday, gives something to look forward to. Perhaps someone has been in pain, knowing that a nurse is assessing the issue and concern is being shown, gives them hope for a day without pain. Knowing that a family member comes to visit every Thursday (for example), gives something to look forward to all week. An employee with a smile and a kind word every morning gives a reason to look forward to another day. This is where our wonderful family and community members come into the picture. You make such an enormous difference for our residents. The visitation by church groups and individual volunteers lets them know they are still important to our community. The musical events, choirs and dinners all bring hope. I wish I could name all the individual people who provide music on Sundays, and Tuesdays and Thursdays in the dining room of Westgate. We have family members who have lost their own resident family member who still come and visit those that they have become attached to; such a wonderful gift. Residents who are reading this: I know that you exchange kindness and gifts of hope to one another a thousand fold more times than are witnessed. There are those who share their musical talent and all of us see and enjoy. But there are those who visit each other in their rooms, read mail, share devotionals, pass out clothing protectors, take desserts to those who have trouble getting up, and just share their time with one another. It is something I particularly love about this place; the loving community within King s Manor s walls. There is hope in friendship. There is hope in community. King s Manor was greatly blessed by all this Christmas. Our thanks to all who gave of themselves to make this season one full of hope and joy. Happy New Year and May 2018 bring you many blessings. 2 Page 2 In A Manor of Speaking... Three generations of Wagners! Above, Erma Barnhill, 89 yrs. young, sitting by the tree in the Lamar Room that she worked on so diligently. It took Erma a year to make over 100 ornaments that were handmade plastic canvas ornaments. Plastic Canvas, she stated, seems to be a lost art. Erma continues to enjoy crafting, sewing, and also volunteers daily to put the Manor mail in the Residents boxes. Thank You, Erma, and thank you to all our Resident Volunteers, who are the Heart Strings of our Facility.

4 Page 4 In A Manor of Speaking... Manor News December was a fun-filled and blessed month here at the Manor! The Residents and I started out the month on the 4th by attending the Hereford Light Parade downtown Main Street, Hereford. We got there a little early, and enjoyed the Christmas music that rang throughout Main Street from the Bells at the Methodist Church. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The parade was great, and was a perfect way to kick off the Christmas holiday. On the 8th, the Residents worked hard on making Christmas candy (reindeer food). This was Activity News a lot of fun. I would like to thank all the HHS nursing students and teachers for all your help to decorate the facility this year, and a big thank you to all the staff who worked so hard on making sure that every party we had was a great success. What a blessing to work with so many wonderful people! On the 12th, our outing to the Parson s Steak House was a lot of fun! The food was wonderful as usual, and the fellowship was great. We had lots of Volunteers this month coming in and out of the facility, from musical programs to birthday parties, volunteers sing- Resident Alta Mae Higgins with Mr. and Mrs. Clause ing Christmas carols, room visits to hand out gifts, music programs from the schools, church programs, Christmas parties, dinner parties and even Santa and Mrs. Clause. We appreciate everyone so much for the love that you bring into our facility. With December gone and 2018 here, I pray that everyone has a blessed New Year and again, Thank You to everyone that made our Christmas here at the Manor a very special one. Thank you to all the schools, churches, and businesses in the community who came by to sing, present programs, bring gifts and visit the Residents during the month of December. The Resident Dinner with their families was a great success. There was so much fellowship, it was wonderful. Thank you to all the staff and community in helping with everything.
