1 V OLUME 9, ISSUE 2 F EBRUARY 9, 2010 Inside this issue: Winging It Pg. 2 Almost Through With the Snow? Just in time for our Banquet on the 19th, it looks like we are going to have some Spring-like weather. Always interesting that we can go from a foot of snow to 50deg weather in a week s time (almost). But it s a great time to shake the cobwebs (and frost) off the airplane-- or the toolbox if you re still building. Remember that we are going to have a newer, closer venue Look closely and that s a plume of snow from our airport s truck mounted snowblower. (over the wing of the 310). It s gotten some use this past few weeks! for our Banquet this year. See the flyer for details (page 3), but this ought to be more central for most of our members. As always, the Feb. meeting will take place at the Banquet, so there will be no meeting on the usual third Monday. A spot or two for ads has opened up on this Newsletter, so if you have the need or know someone who does that the Chapter might be interested in be sure and let Pam know. Flyer for our Annual Banquet Special points of interest: Pg. 3 Calendar of events Pg. 4 Minutes and Program Pg. 5 Visit our Advertisers Pg. 6 Next meeting is at the Banquet. Saturday, February 19th, 2011 is our Annual Banquet, see the flyer on page 3 It s the perfect time to tell Chris St. Germain of any interested groups for Young Eagles, and remember that you can fly individuals also Remember that Charles Gosselin is always looking for good ideas for programs! 2 If you have not made your reservation for Chapter 91's Annual Banquet, please do so soon! The cost for dinner is $25 per person. The location is the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence, Missouri. (I-70 at Little Blue Parkway - - the first exit east of Highway 291). The food will be catered by the Hereford House and the fare will be K.C. strip steak or grilled chicken. Social time: 3 P.M., dinner: 4 P.M. Since the chapter will be charged for each reservation we make, we ask that you pay in advance. For reservations call Pam at (816) it's fine to leave a message and be sure to include your menu choice! Our annual banquet is always an enjoyable affair and since it's always close to Valentines Day, it used to be called the Sweetheart Banquet. But, since some of the members did not think they could attend because they didn't have a sweetheart we changed it to the Annual Banquet. This banquet has been held every year since 1964 when it was at the Gold Buffet in North Kansas City. The evening was held at the Gold Buffet every year until it closed in about We have had many notable speakers over the years. In 1980 Cessna project engineer, Robert Oliver, was the speaker. In 1989 it was our own Fred Schieszer who told the story of Amelia Earhart. This year our guest speaker will be the EAA's treasurer of the Board, Eric Gurley. I'm sure his presentation will be very interesting and enjoyable. All of the speakers we have had were very entertaining and knowledgeable. Among them were Ruth Stafford, CFII who told us about her experiences ferrying single engine planes across the Atlantic Ocean. Others were A-10 pilot Col. Roger Disrud, Top Gun champion; W.A.S.P. Lois Durham; Johnny Rowlands, T.V. Traffic helicopter pilot who was our guest speaker twice, 1997 and again in The grandson of Paul Tibbets, Jr. (pilot of the Enola Gay) was Capt. Paul Tibbets IV a B-2 pilot, was another very entertaining and interesting speaker. Don Harman, WDAF-TV meteorologist; K.C. Star columnist, Charles Gusewelle; Stan Chambers, WWII B-17 pilot; Clyde Greene, Sean Tucker's chief mechanic; Richard Greiner, WWII B-17 ball turret gunner; and the list goes on! I have attended every banquet since 1981 and enjoyed every one of our speakers. 'm sure Eric Gurley will be just as enjoyable. Don't miss this event! I'll see you there! Page 2 Volume 9, Issue Page 2

5 EAA CHAPTER 91 Monthly Meeting December 20th, 2010 The meeting of EAA Chapter 91 was called to order at 7:05 p.m., by president, Larry Young in the meeting room of the EAA #91 Eagle Hangar. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was led by John Rice. Larry offered greetings to members and guests including Zack Nettleton, Mark Phillips and Ron Davenport. Approval of the minutes of the December 20, 2010 meeting were approved as printed in the January newsletter. Pam Ratliff provided the balance on hand in the checking accounts. Pam reminded members name badges were available at $3. She said to get membership renewal dues and application in as soon as possible. Also, anyone with a hangar use-agreement needed to get it in right away. The next board meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, February 1, 7 P.M. The next membership meeting would be the Annual Banquet, February 19, 2011 at Hilton Garden Inn in Independence. The cost would be $25 with a choice of K.C. Strip or Chicken Breast. The speaker would be Eric Gurley who served on the Oshkosh EAA Board as the treasurer. A sign-up sheet for the banquet was passed and members were encouraged to bring door prizes. Larry Young said there would be a meeting of the Board of Aeronautical Commissioners Monday, January 24 at Lee's Summit City Hall at 7 P.M. - any interested members were encouraged to attend. The mounting of the Cessna-on-a-Post would be discussed. Larry also announced he had received permission from the F.A.A. to mount the COP in the requested position. Larry said the calendar of events for 2011 tentatively planned activities for the 3 rd Saturday of each month, April through October. More detailed dates would be forthcoming. Chris St. Germain, Young Eagles Coordinator, said the chapter had enough credits to send a cadet to Air Academy but also to obtain a new printer for the purpose of printing Young Eagle certificates. Larry said the board asked the bylaws be changed, per the recent mailing of the proposed changes, in the following ways: the proposed Chapter application for membership shall be subject to Board approval. would be deleted; other changes included deleting the need to distribute proposed bylaws changes via first class mail in Article 4 and deleting the words but any action required to be taken by the Executive Committee may instead be taken by unanimous consent of all the Executive Committee members in Article 6. Tandy Allen moved for the above changes; motion seconded by Ed Baucom; motion passed. Regarding wants & needs, Jeff Shultz needed a source for powder coating. Dennis Davis was seeking a roommate for Oshkosh - $150 for 6 nights. Chuck Gosselin had a couple of calendars available at $8.50 each. Nancy Inderwiesen agreed to clean the meeting room before the March meeting. The program on the D.U.A.T.'s was presented by David Chaffee. The meeting adjourned, 8:50 P.M. Program notes: The program this time will be our Annual Banquet, with Eric Gurley, EAA treasurer of the Board, as our speaker for the evening. Newsletter Editor: Larry Ross (Lawrencr@aol.com [put Chap. 91 in subject] or 2426 NE Douglas, Lee s Summit, MO 64064) I appreciate any suggestions or opinions (I even may or may not agree with them) on content and format. As before, submittals must be received 10 days before our regular meeting (let s have some suggestions on good places or excuses to fly).
