2 YOUNG EAGLES RALLY, ELLSWORTH MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, FLYING STARTS AT 9 A.M. FROM PRESIDENT LARRY: Above is a flyer announcing our Young Eagles Rally. If you would like to post it or forward it to someone that may be interested, that would be great. I am looking forward to a great day and great event. We are going to start flying at 9 a.m. however we need at least some of us there by 8 a.m. to prepare and get things ready. If you would like to help with this great event and promotion of our passion, please come out. If 8 a.m. is too early for you, when ever you can make it will be great. We will meet at 1 p.m. following our last flight and maybe a pizza lunch. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time. I really enjoyed our last annual meeting and cook out. I hope all of you did also. The weather wasn t what we had hopped, but the food and conversation was great. The year is about over and our new officers take charge on January 1 which also means that your 2012 dues are no payable. Still a bargain at $20, bring your money to the meeting or mail it to Jim Homolka at th rd, Ellsworth, Kansas Soon after the first of the year, our officer team will get together and plan activities for the year. We would appreciate any suggestions, let one of us know, or call or any one of us. Phone numbers and addresses of the officers are on the front of the newsletter. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR T SHIRT SO YOU CAN WEAR IT ON YOUNG EAGLES DAY, CALL Air Traffic Control Tower - Letter to Airmen Notice Number: NOTC3310 Available through a link below, is a Letter to Airmen from the Troutdate, Oregon Control Tower. You may be wondering why we are sending you a Letter to Airmen from Troutdale (TTD) Tower and you don't even operate near TTD. That's because the problem is not just at Troutdale! Have you recently been issued "hold short" instructions by a Control Tower and you acknowledged with just your "N" number or even worse, the infamous "roger"? What happens next is the controller tries to get you to say the proper response. This is not because the controller is "having a bad day" and is hassling you. This has been leading to some interesting radio dialog and ties up valuable radio time. All the Air Traffic Control Towers have been mandated to emphasize the use of proper radio phraseology concerning "hold short" instructions as stated in the AIM. Also please note to always use your "N" number or call sign when acknowledging ATC clearances/instructions. EXAMPLE #1 Controller Phraseology; "November One Two Three Four Five, Hold Short of Runway Three Zero Left at Kilo" Pilot Response: "November One Two Three Four Five, Hold Short of Runway Three Zero Left at Kilo", or Pilot Response: "Cherokee Three Four Five, Hold Short of Runway three Zero Left at Kilo" EXAMPLE #2 Controller Phraseology: "Piper 54321, hold short Runway Two Eight" Unacceptable Responses: "Piper 321, holding short", "Holding short", "321", "November 321, roger" Acceptable Responses: "Piper 321, hold short Runway Two Eight" or "November 321, hold short of Two Eight" Complacency and/or the lack of radio discipline has led to numerous runway incursions and other types of miscommunication. We have been getting feedback from Control Towers that many pilots are not using the proper response to acknowledge ATCT clearances/instructions. Please maintain safety and professionalism by adhering to proper and precise radio communications. For more information and examples see the TTD Letter to Airmen and the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM). Notes From Dale: I have been doing a little flying, not enough considering the weather. There has been a lot of activity at the Ellsworth Airport. Construction is beginning on Al Andersen s new hangar, Ben Janssen s 182 is now flying and our newest instructor Josh Choitz has started working with Ben on obtaining his private ticket. Josh has also brought several K State students over to Ellsworth for training and solo flights. I also noticed Patti Kubick taking some lessons recently with instructor Bud Pinkston, so we will probably see Patti in the sky soon. The city crews have extended the taxiway so that Al can actually stay on the concrete taxiway while going to his new hangar. So if you stop by the airport, there is almost always something going on. Also, expect to see a Gazebo at the airport soon. The airport board recommended and the city council approved a plan presented by the Choitz family to erect a Gazebo North of the old city hangar in memory of Jacob Choitz. The gazebo will provide a place to sit and watch the activity, or simply just to sit and reflect on your day. It will be a nice addition. If you haven t noticed, the benches provided by the Choitz family in Jacob s memory are in place and are very nice. They will be ready for sitting during the YE Rally.

4 I recently employed Josh s expertise in completion of a Wings training phase. If you are a pilot and have not taken advantage of the Wings program, you should do so. The short quizzes on the web site are interesting and very helpful and some recurrent training never hurts. Plus as an added bonus, it counts as a Bi-annual flight review. I have participated in this program for a number of years and have found it very helpful. If you are interested, give Josh or any qualified instructor a call. I am looking forward to flying young eagle kids on November 5 th. This is always a good fun day and the kids really appreciate it. It is great visibility for our chapter and it might just interest someone in a career in aviation. Our newest instructor, Josh, took his first flight during a YE Rally. I also understand that our chapter T Shirts is complete and ready for sale. The cost is $ So if you had one on order, be sure and be prepared to pick it up. If you didn t get one ordered and want one, we did get some extras. So, lots of aviation activity at the airport. I also participated in some wing waxing one nice day, however I haven t finished the remainder of the fuselage. I plan to do that prior to YE day. See you then. Secretary s Report October 9, 2011 Although the weather didn t cooperate and there were no planes flying, as we walked in to the meeting room for our annual cook out and election of officers, I have to say what a beautiful setting the room filled with members, family & friends, the aroma of what we found out to be a variety of wonderful food along with the table settings and decorations which were amazing. All of those involved in the preparation and set up should be commended and thanked your hard work was very much appreciated by all who attended. On another note, Larry Adamek called the meeting to order, we had close to 30 members & guests. Secretary s Report; Dale Weinhold made a motion to approve as printed, Kerry Woods seconded, motion carried. Treasurer s Report; Jim Homolka reports our current balance is $3,318.30, and like most people, we are still not making anything on our CD. Tech Counselor s Report; Jim Homolka talked about Josh & Chanel Choitz, they flew the KR to the National KR gathering in Vermont, IL Josh & Chanel told us about being there Thursday, Friday & Saturday & there were eleven total KR aircraft attending the event. The furthest came from California, others from Marion, KS & Kansas City. Josh & Chanel won Best Paint & People s Choice categories or should I say Chanel & Josh - as Josh mentioned, Chanel won and when they recognized the spouses, he got to stand up with the wives. Young Eagles Report; Larry Farmer brought up Young Eagles event & set date for November 5 th at Abilene or Ellsworth. It was decided Ellsworth on the 5 th, Loren Dees made a motion to approve, Patty Kubick seconded, motion carried. Larry will start on the publicity for the event; Anne will update the YE flier for the cable TV ad with Wilson Communications which airs in Wilson, Lucas, Sylvan Grove, Tipton & Brookville & Larry will share with Eagle Communications in Hays. We need to bring in more pilots Josh said is a yes this year. We ll start flying at 9am & go until 1pm. Dale Weinhold brought up what we did last year where pilots will get the $1.00 per gallon discount on fuel. Darwin Steinle made a motion to approve, Dr. Ron Whitmer seconded, motion carried. Larry F. had some pamphlets for pilots of YE, must be a National Chapter Member, must have insurance, min. of $100,000/seat liability, and the chapter also does an umbrella policy. Dale W. asked about having our monthly meeting the same day as YE, Kerry Woods made a motion to approve, Sid Ashen-Brenner & Al Andersen both seconded, motion carried.

5 Flight Advisor s Report; Jim Price was absent, nothing new. Old Business; T-Shirts Chanel said that the art we supplied of the diagram of the airport was not good for reproduction on the shirts, we could either get better artwork or pay a $40.00 set-up fee & they will redraw, it will add about $1.00 to the price of each shirt. Jack Chaney made a motion to approve, Sid Ashen-Brenner seconded, motion carried. We received a thank you card from the Grauer s for the plant sent for Michael s funeral; the card was passed around to share with all members. Larry Adamek thanked the nominating committee for their work; Patty Kubick, Loren Dees & Kerry Woods. Nominations were as follows; Larry Adamek, President Jack Chaney, Vice President, Jim Homolka, Treasurer & Patty Kubick, Secretary. Dale W. made a motion that nominations cease, Larry Farmer seconded, motion carried. New Business; Larry A. has not received anything for E.A.A calendars yet this year & will keep us updated. The Memorial plaque is almost done & Chanel will need a check to pay the bill. She also said they can add the names on the name plates now while they still have it there, the officers will get a list of names together & have them go ahead & add them now. Kerry Woods made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Loren Dees seconded, motion carried.
