1 Resurrection Episcopal Church, Rockdale We Gather Together May2015 A note from the Rector Dear Parish Family, During the spring, we celebrate the Easter Season, ending in Pentecost on May 24. The season after Easter is an interesting time within the life of Jesus and his community. They bask in the resurrection but also in the memory of the ministry journey, which carried Jesus to the cross. In the days before the Ascension and Pentecost, there were good deal of opportunities for Jesus community to reflect upon what their community s history meant in light of the new transitions which the resurrection brought about. What were the memories, which came to the surface after the resurrection? What were the experiences, which became important to that resurrection community? Today we know that the history of Jesus ministry gave those disciples energy to carry on his ministry after the Ascension. History can limit or motivate us. History can take the form of the memories we long to go back to, never satisfied with the present. To the contrary, history can represent energy of the past, which inspires new things for the present. The former constrains us while the latter feeds our hope. For any parish, seeing history as an asset which inspires new ministry is critical to God s call. In May, we celebrate our history overtly. There is Memorial Day, when the community comes together for the oldest parade in the county. That parade culminates with a picnic at Resurrection Church. Along with the memory of those whom have gone before us from this place, that weekend inspires powerful memories. Those are memories can be a springboard for us into new things. As we enter this May, I encourage you to think of the role of history for you. What is the history of this parish which gives you energy (either from your life at St. James or Calvary)? When were the times you felt excited? Those memories can drive what we do today; not to re-create the past but to stand on the shoulders of all that has come before. At its best, history is the witness of the past which gives us energy to do new things in the present and future. During this Easter season we celebrate that witness and the power of history. Faithfully, Greg+

The event runs from 11 AM until 3 PM and will be held rain or shine. We need parishioners to help man the table and also to provide treats. Treats need to be candy or finger foods that don t require any plates or utensils. Offering free goodies is a wonderful way to get people to stop by our table. Please bring all donations to the undercroft on Friday. If you can help at the table, remember that you don t need to be there for the entire time. Even just an hour would be a great help. So help spread the wonderful word about our church and help out at this event.

Jones Bradury, a gravesite memorial service, will be held in the cemetery by Sgt Jones Bradbury Camp #149 and the Bradbury Auxiliary Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil war, immediately following the May 24th 10am church service. Sgt. Jones Bradbury went to Sunday School, was baptized and worshipped at Calvary before the war. He was killed in battle, April 6, 1865, just 3 days before the end of the war. Please join us to help honor a brave American Patriot and hometown hero. Memorial Day Parade & Community Picnic Monday, May 25 Monday, May 25, is Memorial Day. Every year Calvary helps the American Legion Auxiliary in hosting a community picnic after the Memorial Day Parade. The Auxiliary brings some main dishes. Calvary supplies the salads, side dishes, desserts, and everything else. Your help is greatly needed. The festivities start at 11 AM at the memorial in Rockdale followed by a parade up the hill and a ceremony at our cemetery. The picnic will begin after the memorial ceremony which is usually sometime after noon. Please signup to help!
