1 VOL 59 NO. 12 December 2018.from Pastor Dana to the People. Greetings in the name of our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Back in the old days we used to say it this way, Hey, did you hear the one about... and we would tell a story or joke that we thought almost everyone had probably heard before. But it didn t matter because it was such a great story or joke. We loved to tell it and we loved to hear it again and again from time to time. In these new days we say it this way, Hey, you have probably seen this story or joke on your , Facebook, or YouTube account already and we click on send on our computer and we share that story or joke even though we are pretty sure that the person on the other end of the internet connection has already seen it before. But it just doesn t matter because we love the story and we love to share the story and we all enjoy it whether we are the one that sends it or receives it. As we enter the Advent church season we share that same kind of story, that same type of word together. It is a familiar and powerful word and it s a story that matters. We love to hear it and to share it. And even though we know it pretty well by heart, it is a word and a story that brings meaning to us and for us each and every time we share it and hear it. We already know the word, God s Word made flesh and Christ is born. We already know the story about shepherds, angels, wise men, and the birth of a baby who shall be named Jesus. But the word and the story still speaks to us and makes us new each and every Advent season and Christmas Day. Did you hear the one about Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem? Did I send you the story about the host of heaven singing glory to God in the highest? In the midst of the days of December we already know where the story takes us, to the manger and the Christ child and the very presence of God with us. This December hear the story again. Tell the story again. Rejoice in the story again and let that story speak to your heart and soul and life. Come and share the story and worship Christ, the newborn King! Give a gift that will last forever and invite someone to share the joy of the Advent and Christmas seasons by joining us for worship, during our Sundays in Advent and especially for our Christmas Eve worship service at 7:00 pm on Monday, December 24 th. May the Peace of the Christ child fill your hearts this Advent and Christmas season, Pastor Dana Newhouse

The door by the office will be locked by Pastor just prior to the start of service and the Fellowship Hall and Main Entry doors will be locked by the ushers ten (10) minutes after the start of service. Late arrivals should use the main entry door, so the ushers will be able to see and admit you. In addition, we encourage all groups using the church facility to follow the same guidelines to prevent any surprise visitors. Thank you. Trinity Women Circle will meet on Wednesday, December 12, 6:00 PM at the home of Dianna Wright for the annual Trinity Women Christmas Party. Those attending are asked to bring a holiday dish to share and layette items for Union Hospital. All women are welcome. See page 5. December January February Bloomer Hearing Assisted Listening Trinity has installed 4 hearing assisted devices. They will work with traditional ear buds or headphones. They will amplify anything that is read during the service with our microphones. They will not amplify music or speakers who are not using microphones. They are available on a first come/first served basis. If you are interested in trying one of these devices, please speak to Raymond Bloomer. Although Trinity will have available some earbuds and headphones, we hope, for sanitary reasons, individuals will provide their own. PENNY POWER The last Sunday of the month is Penny Power Sunday. 4 Page 4 RINGING NEWS Trinity Ringers recently sent our 3 octave set of handbells back to the manufacturer for refurbishing. The handbells were purchased in 1998 and refurbishing is recommended every years. Representatives at Malmark took the bells apart, cleaned all the pieces, replaced worn out parts, checked the casings, polished, tested the tones in a variety of combinations and revoiced where necessary. There are 55 steps to this process which takes 4-6 weeks to complete. We are pleased that they have been safely returned. The representatives complemented us on our care and told us whatever you are doing, keep doing it! Funds for this project were raised through donations and the generosity of the women and their yard sale monies ANNUAL REPORTS are due in the church office January 8, 2019 Your co-operation is appreciated. STAFF BONUSES We are blessed to employ three wonderful people who are generous with their time and talents. As the season of giving is upon us, we use this time to show our appreciation to Pastor and our staff, Kenna and Sara, for their work throughout the year. This monetary gift is given to them on the last week of December. If you would like to contribute, simply put your donation in an envelope marked Staff Bonus and include it in the offering. You can include it with your regular offering if you desire. Join us for... Christmas Eve Services Monday, December 24th 7:00 PM (traditional Christmas Eve service) Communion will be celebrated. We will do a Penny Power collection during the service. Questions may be directed to the Worship/Music Committee. The ANGEL TREE is up Trinity Women Circle is once again sponsoring the angel tree for Christmas. Select an angel, buy an age appropriate gift, wrap or bag it, and return it to the tree. Please attach the angel to the gift when you return it. Gifts will be distributed to CODA to be used by those living in their safe house for Christmas or other times in the year. Gifts are unwrapped on site and parents are allowed to select gifts appropriate for their child. Gifts may include clothing, games, puzzles, toys, school supplies, etc. All gifts need to be returned to Trinity by December 16th. The angel tree is located in the fellowship hall. NEWLY ELECTED COUNCIL MEMBERS At the November Congregational Meeting the following were elected to 3 year terms: Donna Gustafson, Pete Gustafson, Jolynn Kuhlman (re-elected), Pat McIntyre, and Theresa Spallone (re-elected). Amelia Pomfret was elected to a 1-year term. These individuals will begin serving at the December 2018 meeting. We appreciate their willingness to serve Trinity in this capacity. We graciously acknowledge and thank Greg Essig and Linda Rodenberger (our two retiring members) for their service to Trinity through the church council. PLEDGE CARDS/TIME TALENT SHEETS STILL BEING ACCEPTED If you have not turned in a PLEDGE CARD and/or a TIME/ TALENT SHEET for 2019, please do so as soon as possible. Your commitments to Trinity helps our Finance/Stewardship & Worship/Music Teams plan for the year. Pledge cards are available on the table in the narthex. Thank you. FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT CARDS (Adult game night) I am writing this article before it happens in hopes that the result will be different than in the past. Every month we invite you to join us and every month we hope you will be there. I am assuming that in November, on a cool Friday evening, that you have nothing to keep you home and you are here. We welcome all of the new players. We take a few minutes to catch up on what everyone is doing and then explain the rules of the friendly game. There are so many players, we decide to divide into tthree tables, switching every half hour so everyone gets to visit. We assign each player a letter and that is their identifier in the scorekeeping realm. Each time you switch tables, you are to keep that letter but assume the score that goes with it at that table. At the end of the evening each of us present were surprised with our success or lack of it depending on which table we ended up at and who s assistance we had in the scoring challenge. We had a great evening at this pretend party and hope you were there to enjoy it with us. Next Card night will welcome the season of Advent with everyone wearing blue. Blue foods will be served. Blue green mold and it s penicillin benefits will be welcome. Join us on December 7, at 7 pm, for another evening of food, fellowship and fun. See you There!

5 Page 5 Union Hospital Layettes Trinity Women Circle is collecting items appropriate for layettes to be used by Union Hospital for those new families who do not have the essentials. Sleepers, t-shirts, outfits, socks, bibs, receiving blankets, and diapers are needed in preemie and newborn (0-3 months) sizes. Preemie clothing is especially useful when parents have lost a newborn. The staff encourages the parents to dress their child as part of the grieving process. If you would like to contribute, purchase your items and bring them to the Trinity Women s Christmas party (Dec. 14), the church office or place them in the box in the narthex by De- cember 20th. We also have other contacts in the area of social work that may send us clients who are seeking assistance. Any help you can provide in replenishing this fund, would be greatly appreciated. Your contributions to our worship are sincerely appreciated. ALL SAINTS The custom of commemorating all of the martyrs of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. In the East, the celebration is still on the Sunday after Pentecost (which is Trinity Sunday in the West). When the festival was introduced in the West it was kept first on May 13, the date of the dedication of the rebuilt Roman Pantheon to St. Mary and All Martyrs. In modern practice, All Saints Day commemorates not only all the martyrs but all people of God, living and dead, who form the mystical body of Christ, as the Prayer of the Day makes clear. The feast is, in effect, a feast of the church. Remembered in our prayers on All Saints Sunday, November 4, 2018 were members/friends of Trinity who have died since last All Saints Day: Nona Dierdorf (wife/mother of Richard & Robert Dierdorf & Trinity member), John Pidany (Trinity member), Paul Robey (Sara Johnson), Darrel Kiefner, Ron Cazzel, Janice Hudson, Bill Hinkle, Gary Gaither, Rosie Graber, Mary Lou Albert, Mary Ann Craig, Pam Peth-el, Bob Denny, Ron King, Kenneth Scheid, Flo Davis, Verylene Burris (friends and family of Gayle and Randy Bland), Kathryn Krocza Meyers, Martha Ann Steidle, SP, Kelly Patrick Moore (Pat McIntyre), and deceased military/first responder personnel. SHOES FOR THE HOMELESS Our daughter, Charlotte McCain Covello, is a podiatrist in Chicago. She & several of her colleagues conduct a free foot clinic once a month. One of their on going needs is decent shoes for their patients. They would like used shoes with good wear left to give out as needed. Used running shoes are especially desirable. Both Men s and women s shoes are needed. We continue to collect shoes for this project. There is a box in the Narthex for shoe donations. We ll take them to Chicago when we visit (which is often to keep track of our grandchildren). If you have any questions give us a call. Thank you. Phyllis & Boice McCain DONATIONS are NEEDED We are always in need of donations to replenish Trinity s FOOD VOUCHERS (FOOD PANTRY) to help those in need. Trinity has partnered with the Terre Haute Ministries assistance program. Trinity has chosen to provide food vouchers. We need to provide a committed monthly amount to the program. This is not a line item in our budget and can only be supported by your generosity. Questions regarding this program should be directed to Charles Parks or Pastor Dana. Thank you to those who continually support this outreach opportunity. TO DATE: January through November 2018 your generosity has allowed Trinity to serve 85 families (207 people).

Thank you! Trinity s Vision Statement MOWING to SHOVELING As the mowing season draws to a close, we transition to the need for snow removal. For several years we have hired someone for our snow removal needs. We plan to do the same this year. Money in the mowing/snow removal fund will continue to receive monetary contributions. You may use your offering envelope or a pew envelope designated for this purpose. Thank you We are a welcoming family of believers in Jesus Christ who believe that we are called to live out our faith by serving others and making disciples for Jesus Christ. Guiding Principles* We are committed to a triune God who governs our lives: God the Father, Jesus Christ - his son our Lord, and the Holy Spirit. We acknowledge our spiritual weaknesses and accept our forgiveness as sinners redeemed by Jesus Christ's death and resurrection. We praise God, pray for His help in our lives and seek a strong sustaining relationship with Him. We pursue the expression of Jesus Christ's teachings in our lives, supporting each other, and inviting all to join with us. We strive to be a community of believers, helping and supporting, within the congregation and in the broader community. While waiting Advent does not lead to nervous tension stemming from expectation of something spectacular about to happen. On the contrary, it leads to a growing inner stillness and joy allowing me to realize that he for whom I am waiting has already arrived and speaks to me in the silence of my heart. Just as a mother feels the child grow in her and is not surprised on the day of the birth, but joyfully receives the one she learned to know during her waiting, so Jesus can be born in my life slowly and steadily and be received as the one I learned to know while waiting. Henri J.M. Nouwen, The Genesee Diary CALLING ALL SINGERS! The sounds of Advent and Christmas are being heard during choir rehearsal. Do you enjoy singing Christmas music? Now would be a great time to try singing with the choir as we prepare for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Sharing your voice in praise and adoration makes a wonderful gift for the baby Jesus. New voices are always welcomed and appreciated. All voice parts are needed. Just join us on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for rehearsal. (Note: there will be no rehearsal on Wednesday November 21, 2018). If you have any questions feel free to speak with our director, Sara Johnson or with any choir member. Hope to see you soon in the choir!

11 Page 11 Small packages, great things The motto for Hershey s Kisses used to be Big things come in small packages! That also could be a motto for Bethlehem, for Baby Jesus and, indeed, for us. It s an important message to remember when we fear we re too weak to fix the world s problems, too small to fight the gigantic terror that threatens a loved one or too lacking in abilities we see in others. But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, God declares through the prophet Micah (5:2, NRSV), from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel. Bethlehem was a mere village. God s ruler for Israel started as an infant. His birthplace was a small stable, not a palace or temple. But size isn t everything. Big that is, great things can come in small packages. And thanks to the tiny baby who grew up to share immeasurably huge love with the world, God can do great things through you, too! A merry balance Many happy returns Somehow, not only for Christmas, But all the long year through, The joy that you give to others, Is the joy that comes back to you. And the more you spend in blessing The poor and lonely and sad, The more of your heart s possessing Returns to you glad. John Greenleaf Whittier In Luke 10:38-42, Martha gets a bad rap. After all, we need Marthas to get things done and to show hospitality. (Note that Martha is the one who opens up her home to Jesus in the first place!) Marthas are needed in December, but holiday preparations shouldn t shift our focus from the reason for the season. When we become worried and distracted as Martha did (v. 41, NRSV), we re tempted to trade God s one thing (v. 42) for the world s many worthless things. Yet if we re only like Mary, we may forget to let the world know who we re celebrating! So this Christmas, keep a proper balance between your inner Mary and your inner Martha. Take time to be Mary, kneeling at the manger, so that all the merry things you do as Martha have meaning and serve the newborn king. The perfect gift Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said, Love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction. At Christmas we celebrate God coming to earth to look outward with us in the same direction, from our perspective and experience. Jesus was an ordinary person: He learned to talk and walk like any toddler, learned a trade from his father and acquired the habits of faith from his family. In adulthood, Jesus experienced life as we all do: the challenge of hard work, grief at a loved one s death, heartache over oppression and the world s great needs but also joy in celebration, fellowship with neighbors and deep friendship. God personally knows our every experience, emotion and need because Jesus, while fully divine, lived as a full human being. He has gazed at the world, life and even death from our direction, giving us the perfect Christmas gift: love.
