Not pictured: Frank Maguire Alex Couillard, Lodge Secretary The Order of the Arrow s centennial Lodge Banquet was excellent in every way. Brothers and Arrowmen walked into the Lewiston Elks Lodge at 10:00 and packed the room completely. Lasagna and Herb Chicken-provided by Dad s Catering Service out of Mechanic Falls-kicked off the Banquet just right. The recipients of the Centurion award were re-recognized for their dedication to the lodge, all of whom were well deserving of the award. This was the first of many awards of the day, as well as a speech made by former Region Chief Kyle Piper. The passing of the title of Chief was what brought the event together. In a powerful speech made by 2016 Lodge Chief Andrew Aguilo, we as brothers were bestowed the goal of being a positive influence on each other lives in every which way we can, in order to fulfill the dream envisioned by E. Urner Goodman and Carrol A. Edson. Andrew summed up the purpose of the Order of the Arrow with his vision of Mad ockawanda Lodge being every bit of cheerful service it can muster, and that moving forward in 2016, we will achieve greatness. twitter.com/madockawanda Banquet Banquet Awards Awards University of Scouting Section Conclave facebook.com/madockawanda Page Page 2 2 Page 3 Page 4

Learning, the Scouting Way Lodge Excellence Summit Recap Did you Know? In 1976, the National Order of the Arrow Committee created the new modern Indian design that became the logo for the Order. Most members from that time still refer to this design as the flaming nun. Greg Morris, Casco Bay Chief Section NE-1 recently held an entire day of training in Southborough, Massachusetts, on subjects such as ceremonies, Elangomat, advising, communication, leadership, and elections. The section helped one another by giving experienced advice to improve and better each other s lodges. Madockawanda had a contingent of 4 youth and 5 adults present. Everyone had a blast. It was followed by a Council of Chiefs meeting with planning for the Section Conclave. A Helping Hand Honoring Selfless Service Lodge Purple Arrow Award Lodge Founder s Award Dennis Namin, K-Valley Until the mid-1950s, the rules for Brotherhood membership were quite 5 today. A different from committee of lodge and chapter officers reviewed the names of Ordeal members, selecting those whom they considered to be the most worthy based on service, brotherhood and leadership. Page 2 The Purple Arrow Award was created by Madockawanda Lodge in 1996 to recognize individuals or groups who are not members of the Order of the Arrow for outstanding service to our Lodge. Prior to December, it has only been presented on 5 occasions. At the lodge banquet in December, Madockawanda Lodge presented it s sixth Purple Arrow Award to Kathy Higgins, a member of the administrative staff of the Pine Tree Council office. With this year s presentation, the lodge has certainly recognized a wonderful supporter of our cause and Scouting in general. you, Kathy, for all of Thank Thank you, Kathy, for all of your work in support of Madockawanda Lodge. Alex Couillard, Lodge Secretary Scott Valcourt was the first to receive the Founder s Award in 1990, in recognition of his long term service to Madockawanda Lodge as a youth. Since 1990, the Lodge has awarded 47 Founder s Awards to Youth and Adults alike. Such recipients include current Lodge Adviser Mike Mirisola, Frank Maguire, and Bruce Rueger. This past year, in the centennial year of the Order of the Arrow, Madockawnda Lodge awarded the Founder s Award to Conclave Co-Chair and former Lodge Vice Chief Gregory Valcourt for his extended youth service. As well as Abnaki Chapter Advisor Don Vachon for his unwavering dedication to the Order of the Arrow as an adult. Greg and Don are well deserving recipients, thank you both for your service to our Lodge.

Learning and Brotherhood University of Scouting Steven Nadeau, Lodge Vice Chief Once again the lodge made a very strong showing at UoS. The lodge hosted six classes as part of the College of OA Studies, which included courses on ceremonies, high adventure, the responsibility of an Arrowman, drumming, and Dare to Do. The highest attendance of all classes was with Arrowmen exploring dare to do and the drumming session taught by our drum and dance team chair James Loft and advisor Tom Thornton. The Order of the Arrow was also able to help University of Scouting by setting up, cleaning up, and serving lunch and presenting the colors in the opening ceremony. Throughout the day, 15 youth Arrowmen attended to take courses and participate in activities. The lodge store was also a great hit. With the debut of the 2016 lodge flap, everyone wanted one. The store sold 50 of the brand new patches. Overall the event was an absolute blast and all Arrowman should try and attend next year if it is anything like the amazing experience of brotherhood that took place at Freeport High School on March 12th. From the Chief Madockawanda Lodge has earned 7 Service Awards since 1999 For 1999 service, under Lodge Chief Matt Dubois We have a duty to all of Boy scouting Hello my fellow Arrowmen, I hope the election season has gone well! As many of you know, we have a big year ahead of us. We have a duty to all of Boy Scouting and our fellow Arrowmen to make this Madockawanda s shining year. Being an Arrowmen means that we must be selfless in all of our service. We must reflect on our Ordeals, our hard work, our service, and remember that cheerful service is what Madockawanda stands for. Conclave coming to our very own Camp Hinds, we have a huge responsibility for making sure it is facilitated properly; and in order for us to get this done, we need your help! We are also looking for people to get involved with lodge committees, and helping out at induction weekends. So if you, and/or any Arrowman you know, would like to further their service to the lodge and scouting by helping out in any of these areas, please reach out to me! For 2005 service, under Lodge Chief Dan Warner For 2007 service, under Lodge Chief Aaron Wiggin For 2008 service, under Lodge Chief Caleb Frederick For 2009 service, under Lodge Chief Nate Smith For 2011 service, under Lodge Chief Jeff Molina For 2012 service, under Lodge Chief Jared Bolduc Yours in the Brotherhood Andrew Aguilo 2016 Lodge Chief Page 3

Did You Know? One of the Madockawanda Lodge traditions when hosting the Section Conclave is to create a plaque that hangs in the Camp Hinds dining hall. The lodge commissions one of its members to create this oversized version of the Conclave patch, which all attendees may sign on the reverse side, noting their participation for history. How many past Conclave plaques can you spot in the Camp Hinds dining hall? 5 NOAC in a weekend 2016 Section Conclave Greg Valcourt, York Conclave is the greatest OA weekend of the year. Hundreds of scouts come together in an experience that any campout could not match. Conclave is held every year in the first weekend of June, jumping from camp to camp in NE-1. Last year Conclave was held at Camp Yawgoog in Rhode Island, with over 750 scouts in attendance. With all of these scouts attending, it becomes a (Section NE-1 Logo) truly unforgettable weekend. This year Conclave is Friday June 3, 5:30pm Sun, June 5, 12:00pm being held in Maine, hosted by Madockawanda Lodge, at Camp Hinds. So we as a Lodge are responsible for preparing Hinds for conclave in order to foster what will become the best Conclave NE-1 has had yet. In order to make such an unforgettable weekend possible the lodge will hold two work days at Camp Hinds on Saturday, May 7, and Saturday, May 28 at 8am until 5pm. Many hands make light work, we hope to see as many Brothers as we can. Why Conclave is Great And why you should really go. The most Boy Scouts I had ever seen was at Hinds, which was no more than 250. Whereas, 250 is great; it didn t feel great. It felt like this is it? this is all we, the Boy Scouts can muster?. The same troops came every year, and as a result I met no one new. But then I joined the OA, thought sweet, a sash. My Elangomat basically guilt tripped me into going to Conclave, and I expected nothing out of it. But when I arrived, I was joined by what felt like an endless amount of Boy Scouts who wanted nothing but to build a future for the Order of the Arrow and Boy Scouting as a whole, and who wanted to have a great time doing it. I have stories I will always remember from that weekend, and I ve been bent on being an active Brother since. -Johnny Arrowman, K-Valley Page 4

How to be in a Ceremony Have you ever wanted to be like the guys who completed your induction ceremony? The Arrowmen who do ceremonies really made me wonder what it takes to be a ceremonialist when I first completed my Ordeal. Being honest with all of you Brothers, ceremonies is some of the most fun I ve had in the Order. I very much enjoy the whole process from pre-ordeal on Friday night to the Brotherhood ceremony on Saturday of an induction weekend. Truth be told, ceremonies are a lot of work. We spend much time making sure our lines are prepared, the ceremonies site is set up, and each principle has delivered meals to the candidates. This is because once you know the words and responsibilities of a principle you are embodying you will do a much better job to portray the emotion and character of that principle to make the induction the best it possibly can be. The most rewarding part about the ceremonies team is not even the seemingly endless cases of moxie but the satisfaction of presenting those you know, those you completed an election for, or even those you know with the honor of their very own sash. The ability to look into each and every Arrowmen s eye and say to yourself that you left a lasting impression on them and that they will come back and serve alongside you in this great and honored Order that we all so very much cherish. I m not asking you, Johnny Arrowman, to become a ceremonies legend but at least contact the ceremonies chair today and see how you can help. Help comes in script parts to site tech s or simply just a stage hand setting up and breaking down. What are you waiting for? Ceremonies needs your help today! We have planned and executed the Abnaki District Klondike Derby, done a handful of troop elections to elect new members, and performed several crossover ceremonies to introduce Cub Scouts into the Boy Scout program and all it has to offer. Abnaki looks forward to continuing our service past election season and the first year of the OA s second century. Dalton McElfresh, Chapter Chief Casco Bay Chapter Casco Bay is going great, we have elected roughly 20 new candidates and have crossed over just as many cubscouts. The chapter is looking forwards to helping out with conclave and has started looking for locations for the upcoming lodge banquet. Greg Morris, Chapter Chief Kennebec Valley Elections are going slower this year because of the lack of eligible candidates. However our spirit of brotherhood remains strong, just last meeting we went to the movies. We intend to strengthen this year, our main focus is on building a ceremonies team. KV looks forward to another year of service. Nevik Boostedt, Chapter Chief York Chapter York remains ever strong. Election season is on and we are electing new candidates for our Brotherhood. The pride; however, is with the growing Ceremonies team. Crossovers are our main focus this season. We also held a successful Klondike Derby and look forward to a great year. Casco Bay Reaching Out Community Service with a Sash Steven Nadeau, Lodge Vice Chief On December 31st 2015, Casco Bay Chapter held a blood drive at the North Windham Union Church. Casco Bay Chapter saw a need for blood donations and, under extensive research and planning by associate advisor Paul Nadeau and the youth, were able to hold a rather successful drive. Although it was not as successful as we would have liked we know that the many blood donations will go to those who need it most. The idea came when thinking about the theme of Dare to Do Garrett Smith, Chapter Chief given to all Arrowmen at the 2015 NOAC. The idea of Dare to Do is to get every and all Arrowmen to continue their good turn daily and extend a helping hand to those in need. Needless to say the blood donations given will do just that. Casco Bay Chapter is hoping other chapters will do similar opportunities to extend a helping hand to those in need. CB Chapter will be looking into holding another drive soon. Thank you to all who helped make it a success. Page 6

Have You Paid Your 2016 Dues? Be an active member in Madockawanda Lodge by paying your dues It s one of the single most important things you can do as a member of the lodge - pay your dues annually! Not only does paying your dues keep you as an active member, it grants you the ability to wear the lodge flap and OA sash with pride (non active members are not entitled to wear the flap or sash), receive issues of the Turtle Soup, help finance lodge service projects, chapter activities and much, much more! Use one of the dues forms below for yourself, and cut out the other for a Scout or Scouter in your troop or district! Cut out the form to the right and mail it with your 2016 dues payment to Pine Tree Council Membership cards can be picked up at your chapter meeting. Additional forms can be found on the lodge website: Cut out the form to the right and mail it with your 2016 dues payment to Pine Tree Council Membership cards can be picked up at your chapter meeting. Why is so much emphasis placed on paying dues each year? Dues are important because the revenue from dues accounts for MOST of the lodge income each year. The income from other events goes right back into the event itself. Your dues pays for your fee to national, your mailing of Turtle Soup, event publications and registrations, as well as helping fund lodge service projects and some chapter activities. Without dues revenue the lodge wouldn t function, it couldn t pay for its operations costs. We encourage all members to pay their dues annually, without them we would not have such a great lodge as we do today! Page 7
