May 2008 Issue #5-Volume #58 The Vigil Honor is the third level of membership in the Order of the Arrow. It is the highest honor that a Lodge may bestow upon one of its members. After a minimum of 2 years service as a Brotherhood member, a member of the OA may be nominated for the Vigil Honor. This is usually done by someone close to the nominee. They are being nominated because they have been consistently performing service to the Lodge, or Council, at an extraordinary level. All nominations are evaluated by the Lodge s Vigil Committee. This is a group of youth members and advisers that must evaluate all of the nominations and choose those that best exemplify the spirit of the Order of the Arrow. The honor is meant not only to recognize the exceptional service that has been performed by the member, but also as a recognition of what that member will do in the future. Vigil selections are made at the Heard Ordeal and kept a secret until the Lodge Banquet in January. At this time all those that were selected are called out and recognized as Vigil Candidates in front of the Lodge. Each member must search their own heart and decide if they feel they are worthy of the honor. All those who choose to accept the Vigil gather at the Vigil Weekend at R-C and perform their Vigil. This weekend is the culmination of the immediate past (Continued on page 2) Sean Michael Barr Breon Josef Bradley Brandon Lee Clark Jeffery Scott Clark David E Clyborne Edward Arthur Cole Aaron W Dunn Taylor Lee Falkenberg Anthony James Eldon Harris Jr Robert Jordon Hetrick Jr Howard Delroy Jackson Robert Eric Kondziolka Jeffry Thompson Leja Robert John Lukowiak Travis John McHenry Michael J McKinley Thomas J McKinley Jean-Luc R Meuret Kyle Edward Muse James R Nikolaisen V Neal Nikolaisen Lu Ann S Payne Ryan Lee Powers Alexander Sterling Rose Stephen Emory Smith William Eric Smith Wallace Neil Taggart Jackson D Toeniskoetter Richard J Toeniskoetter Kyle J Wall Lyle Earl Wall

2 Lodge Chief s duties and is probably the most important duty of their career as chief. Due to a conflict this year, the duties of the past Lodge chief were shared by current Lodge Chief, Doug Hockett, Lodge Adviser, Randy Driscoll, and the Vigil Adviser, Cookie Smith. Thanks to everyone for pulling this weekend together and making sure that a meaningful experience was had by all. Special thanks goes out to our first rate team of cooks: Tom Armstrong Gail Roemer Matt Roemer Keith Smith They all worked very hard to prepare special meals for the occasion. As always, the food was incredible. In addition, special thanks goes out to those who served as ceremonialists. James Doig Doug Hockett Tyler Klingaman Kenny McHenry Andre Meuret As each of you know, at the heart of the OA are the great ceremonies. Doug returned to do the ceremonies for the second year in a row, the other four were awarded their Vigil in 2007 and returned to perform the ceremonies for us this year. This is the type of dedication that the Vigil Honor represents. That s about all we can tell you about the weekend without letting something special slip. If you get a chance to congratulate one of proud new Vigil Honor members, I know they will be excited. If you can t tell who they are by the wide smile they wear, I m sure those bright new sashes will stand out everywhere. Thanks, and YIB, Tom-Tom Staff (Continued from page 1) Yuma Ordeal 2008 The Yuma Ordeal was held again this year and it was spectacular. This year we had 14 Ordeal candidates and 5 members joining Brotherhood. The candidates had a hard task having to move 60 tons of rock and planting a bunch of shrubs around the area while installing drip systems. They followed this up with the removal of Salt Cedars, all in over 90 degree Yuma weather. It s making me sweat just thinking about it. Besides the minor rattlesnake incident, which still leaves the newly christened Brotherhood member Sean Franklin jumping at the word snake, the Ordeal was successful. The food was great too. With 1 Lodge officer showing up late Saturday night, and with the new members surrounded by their brothers, the fellowship lasted all throughout the night, leaving the members happy, full of pizza, and tired the next morning. A special thank you goes out to our Lodge Adviser, Randy Driscoll, and the ceremonies team from the Tovakinpi chapter for their efforts in ensuring the success of this Ordeal. The next Yuma Ordeal has been scheduled for Feb , We hope to see you there! Thanks, and YIB, JD Ebadirad Pang Chapter Chief

on the spending at the Lodge level. Robert will be the official keeper of the Budget and we hope that this transition will go smoothly. For those of you that are seeking Lodge funds to get your projects, or activities done, your first stop is going to be Robert. However, you might want to make sure you allow a little extra time as we work out all of the details. We ll be asking Robert to write an article for next month detailing how he d like his position to work as well as some anticipated new rules for how to get things done. Good luck in your new position, Robert, all of us in the Lodge are looking forward to the great job you ll be doing. Thanks and YIB, Over the course of the last few months a team of Lodge members were pouring over the Lodge SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) to bring them into the 21st century. Many changes were minimal or didn t make dramatic changes in the operations of the Lodge. Maybe the most visible change is the addition of a new Lodge Vice-Chief position! One of the changes ratified at the April LEC was the addition of the new Vice-Chief of Finance position. This Vice-Chief will work closely with the Lodge Adviser and Associate Advisers to help monitor the financial well being of the Lodge. After the LEC ratified the creation of the new position, Lodge Chief, Doug Hockett, appointed Robert Lukowiak of Tovakinpi Chapter to fill the position. Robert was unanimously approved by the LEC and will serve out the remainder of the year. Robert has served the Tovakinpi Chapter as their Chapter Vice-Chief of Inductions and is currently serving as their Chapter Chief. Robert will fill both roles during the transition. As you can tell by the little wooden triangle above, Robert is a deserving recipient of the Vigil Honor this year. Robert has named Bob Rooney from Tuwanasavi Chapter as his Adviser. Tom-Tom Staff The Lodge Elections will be held at the October Ordeal at the Heard Scout Pueblo. If you would like to run for an office, you need to turn in a letter of intent to Doug Hockett (the current Lodge Chief) no later than the LEC at the Raymond Ordeal. Also remember that there is a new Vice-Chief position this year Together, their duties will be to keep a watchful eye 4

High Adventure sign up for 2009 Over the past few summers, the popularity of these programs has grown rapidly. Largely for this reason, applications for Summer 2009 will be available in late June of If you are going to be 16 through 20 years of age in the summer of 2009, strongly consider attending one of these three great high adventure programs. 5

A letter from the Chief! Hey Wiki! Here s my latest installment of my letter from the chief. First, I would like to welcome Robert Lukowiak to his new role on the Lodge Executive Committee. Robert is the new Vice-Chief of Finance. He accepted the position at our last meeting. I wish him, and his Adviser (Bob Rooney), the best of luck in their new positions. The finance area has traditionally been taken care of by the Lodge Adviser and the Lodge Chief. With this change, we now have a youth and an adult dedicated to this important area of the Lodge business. On a not so happy note, two of my close friends and fellow Lodge Officers have stepped down from their positions. David Loeffler was first elected to the position of Vice-Chief of Programs in He served in that role for the entire year and was re-elected to serve in the same position this year. David is leaving the area to work as summer camp staff at Lost Valley Scout Reservation in California and then leaving for college in Ohio. I m sure that David will have a great summer and will do well in these new ventures. I will certainly miss his level head as we discussed Lodge business. Jeff Leja has been one of my closest friends since I have been active as a Lodge Officer. Jeff served as the Vice-Chief of Inductions last term and has been serving the Lodge this term as the Vice-Chief of Communications. Many of you will recognize Jeff as an avid patch trader. However, you may not know that Jeff s first love (after his car, of course) is designing patches. Jeff designed the new standard Lodge flap and this year s fellowship patch (among many others). You may not remember, but prior to Jeff s service on the LEC, Jeff served the Lodge as a ceremonialist. Jeff is returning to that area and plan s to help his Chapter by working with a new Brotherhood team. I hope to name the replacements for these positions at the LEC at Geronimo. Again, I would like to thank both David and Jeff for the service they have provided to the Lodge. Moving on to current affairs : We held the 2008 Vigil Weekend just last weekend. This was a truly amazing event and I, for one, had a great time. Acting as a Vigil Chief is a rewarding experience and I enjoyed doing that again this year. However, as always, the fellowship that I enjoy at Lodge events makes them ROCK! Back to business, we inducted 31 new Vigil members at the event. You can find their names on the first page of this issue. Coming up, let s see, TOMORROW!!! It s time for the R-C Ordeal. We hope to have a great turn out this year as we gather to have our first major Ordeal of the year. As always, we ll have an incredible induction event and fun with friends. And The most incredible thing is that there is NO LEC at this Ordeal. On the calendar just 2 weeks later on May 16th is the Geronimo Ordeal. Don t forget that we moved the elections from Geronimo to the Heard. And Our newbie Ordeal for the year is being held at Camp Silver Creek (near Show Low). I hope this ordeal is as successful for the area Chapters as the Yuma Ordeal has been for the Pang Chapter. You will also see in this issue that we have selected our NOAC fundraiser design. I d like to extend my personal congratulations to Seth Berkson for creating the design. It is an incredible effort and will be something completely new as a NOAC fundraiser. Just in case you were wondering, I believe the fundraiser patches will be released at the fall ordeals. SIGN UP TO HELP AT AN AN ORDEAL NOW!!! Hope to see you at one of our upcoming events! Yours in service, Doug Hockett LodgeChief@wipalawiki.org 6

Adviser s Minute (or more) From the desk of the Adviser: This past month I had to break down and purchase a new computer. I was told that I was living in the dinosaur age until now. Now I feel I m preparing to fly to the moon without any training as this is the third attempt in writing this note. The other times I tried to save it, and it didn t work. This past month I was very busy, I went to California twice, once for Boys Scouts (Camp Visitation Training, in Santa Ana) and once for entertainment. The idea was to recharge my batteries before our busy season starts. members to come to these activities and enjoy the fellowship, service and cool weather. Recently two of our Vice-Chiefs stepped down from their positions. David Loeffler, VC Programs, stepped down because he is preparing to go to college out of state and wouldn t be able to attend Lodge activities. Jeffry Leja, VC Communications, stepped down as he was unable to fulfill the obligations required for this position. I would like to thank both of these young men for their SERVICE to the Lodge. I wish them all the luck in the future. Finally, as most of you prepare for the summer, getting out of school, Summer Camp, High Adventure Camp, ArrowCorps 5, please have a safe time. For those Arrowmen that graduate from school congratulations on your success. Yours in the Brotherhood, Randy Driscoll Lodge Adviser Adviser@wipalawiki.org Last week the Lodge celebrated the Induction of the Vigil members that were selected last year. This was held at R-C Scout Ranch. We had a great time if you were inside during the night. It got bitter cold and we had high winds. We all had great food thanks to the help of Keith Smith, Cookie Smith, Gail, Matt, Mark and Beverly Roemer, Tom Armstrong and Wendy Meuret. I want to thank Cookie Smith for all of her hard work as the Vigil Adviser. This year she had some unexpected problems that needed her experience and love of the OA to make this a special time for all of our new Vigil members. I want to also thank our Vigil Chief s, Doug Hockett, Andre Meuret, Kenny McHenry, James Doig and Tyler Klingaman, for stepping up at the last minute without any time to really prepare for the ceremonies. Your service made this a great event. Before I forget, I also want to CONGRATULATE all of our new Vigil members for completing your Vigil. Your Service to the Order has been appreciated, as it will be in the future. For those of you seeking to seal your Brotherhood in the Lodge Your next opportunity is this weekend at Camp R-C. The next opportunity will be at the Geronimo Ordeal, just 2 weeks later. If you would like to sign up for Brotherhood at any of our upcoming events, be sure to visit our website and select the Ordeal menu option. There you will find the registration forms you need. The month of May is a very busy and demanding month. We start with the R-C Ordeal on the 2nd-4th. Then in two weeks we will hold the Geronimo Ordeal. We have a lot of work to do at both camps to get them ready for the summer. I encourage all 7

8 The Ordeal season is upon us! As I am sure most of you know, we completed our first Ordeal of the year at West Wetlands Park in Yuma. When compared to the scope of some of our other Ordeals, it was very small in comparison. However, what it lacked in size, it made up in other ways. The parks service in Yuma was very appreciative of our efforts. They were also very complimentary of the organization and the amount of work that was completed by our small group. Most of all, the folks in Yuma, would like us to let everyone know that they are the first Chapter in the Lodge to make their Brotherhood conversion numbers this year. After the Brotherhood ceremony at the Yuma Ordeal, Pang Chapter is sitting at 36.4% for their conversion rate. Don t think the Lodge is going to just let you set back and relax now. Our Brotherhood committee has set a goal of 40% for this year, and we would like to see you make it. We also want to take a minute to recognize the youth and adults who pulled together to make the Yuma Ordeal a success. Brandon Bullock, Kevin Kuhlman, Kenneth Leutz, Kenny McHenry, and Kyle Muse, (all of Tovakinpi Chapter [Thunderbird District]) joined forces with Justin Lenhardt from Walpi-Kiva Chapter (Salt River District) to get all of the ceremonies done. This was a real challenge as this Ordeal fell right in the middle of Prom season and a large number of our ceremonialists were otherwise occupied. Moving on, we have an upcoming Ordeal that will take place this weekend at the R-C Scout Ranch east of Payson. If you have members in your units that would like to come to the R-C Ordeal, it s not too late. Just have them go to our web site at and fill out an on-line registration form. Just a couple of weeks after the R-C Ordeal is the Geronimo Ordeal. If you weren t aware, it s being held at beautiful Camp Geronimo at the base of the scenic Mogollon rim. Wow! Does this sound like a travel brochure, or what? Not too long after the Geronimo Ordeal, we ll be assisting the White Mountain area chapters in putting on an Ordeal at Camp Silver Creek (June 6-8). The camp is located close to Show Low and this will be our first Ordeal effort in that area. As always, the Lodge is looking to have members attend the Ordeals and help out. As a matter of fact, while I am talking about that, I would like to recognize Matt Dornic who has been an Elangomat more times than any other youth in the Lodge. If we could get just a few more like Matt, life would be great! If you would like to come to one of the Ordeals and serve as an Elangomat, or in some other capacity, please visit our web site and fill out the member registration form. Remember that there are a limited number of the discounted Elangomat fees. If you want to attend the ordeal as an Elangomat, you need to get your name on the list now!!! There will be opportunities at each of our Ordeals for you to seal your Brotherhood. All of you Chapter Chiefs out there need to get as many of your Brotherhood eligible candidates to come to one of the upcoming Ordeals as you can. Taking the plunge and getting your Brotherhood is an amazing experience that builds on the ideas presented to you during your Ordeal experience. If you have questions about one of the upcoming Ordeals, please contact Doug Hockett (our Chief) at lodgechief@wipalawiki.org, or Randy Driscoll (our Adviser) at adviser@wipalawiki.org. It doesn t matter if you are attending to work real hard, or to share in the fellowship, We hope to see you at one of our upcoming Ordeals. Thanks, and yours in Brotherhood Tom-Tom Staff

Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Tick Tock We are anxiously awaiting the release of our 2009 NOAC Youth Contingent Leader from the shackles of his current position. As all of you already know, Lenny is doing a great job as the Contingent Leader for AC5. Lenny, don t use up all of your great ideas on AC5, we want some of them for NOAC too. The NOAC fundraising patch has been chosen. It s at the patch company now getting the artwork cleaned up. The patch is an incredible design and was created by one of the youth from the Tovakinpi Chapter. He will be recognized with a plaque at next year s Lodge Banquet. We are still looking for new, and improved, patch and t-shirt, designs for the patches our Lodge will wear to NOAC. Wouldn t it be great to be able to say that you designed our Lodge s NOAC patches? If you ve got a great idea, it to noac@wipalawiki.org. In addition to patch designs, we are looking for ideas for unique NOAC stuff that s just too great to pass up. Right now I have one youth that is sending me a boatload of stuff, but I m not getting ideas from anyone else. Let s get those ideas rolling in! The sticky rule about NOAC is that we need to take 2 youth for each adult. Currently, we don t have enough youth to cover the number of adults that have signed up. We need more youth!!! Our goals this year are to have as many Chapters as possible represented on the contingent, and not to leave a single youth behind! That s right, guys If you ll be a youth in August of 09 If you are current on your dues If you want to have the best time of your life Get your deposit sent in ASAP! We will be looking for youth volunteers to work on the NOAC committee. Your reward (along with a pat on the back) will be one of the coveted committee patches. (And before you ask, Gary you can t sign up for the committee 6 times and get 6 patches.) 10 NOAC Patches (update) As we told you last month, we had the artwork in hand that we will use to create the BEST NOAC FUNDRAISER FLAP EVER. And yes, folks, after much deliberation, and the greatly appreciated involvement of the infamous Patch Committee, the 2009 NOAC committee chose the design for our fundraiser flap. As we have said all along, we wanted to select a youth design. And WOW!!! Did we ever get some great youth designs! We had hoped to show the final artwork here this month so you could get a preview of what the patch will look like. It will be released for sale at the Raymond Ordeal and we hope to be sold out early. The patch design that was chosen was a hand drawn, original design, created by Seth Berkson from the Tovakinpi Chapter. Seth s patch design is unique and shows the level of talent that our Lodge has to draw from. Seth will be recognized at the Lodge Banquet with a plaque recognizing him as the patch designer and thanking him for his efforts. Oh dootie!, you say (watch your language) I ve been working on a great patch design for months and I guess I might as well rip it up. STOP!!! Don t tear another bit of that paper. The design we have chosen is for the fundraiser flap only. That means that the delegate flap, the trader flap, and the CSP are still up in the air. If you are interested in submitting artwork, you have until July 29th to submit ideas. You should submit a finished design, but you should keep in mind that the Committee might ask you to make minor adjustments. If you would like to submit a design, you can draw it, paint it, color it, create it in Photoshop, or pretty much whatever you like. All we ask is that you not send your original artwork to us. Electronic submissions can be sent to noac@wipalawiki.org. Paper submissions should be sent to Mike Hockett at: Mike Hockett 123 W Seminole Dr Phoenix, AZ If you have questions about what you can submit, or general questions about the patch designs, please me at mhockett@wipalawiki.org. Thanks, Mike Hockett NOAC Contingent Adviser

Arrowmen at Summer Camp A lot of Arrowmen, youth and adult, will be attending summer camp at Camp Geronimo or Camp Raymond this year. As most of you know we have a Camp Chief at both camps for the summer. Robert Lukowiak will be at Camp Geronimo and Casey Oswald will be at Camp Raymond. They have a lot of responsibilities during camp along with their job assignments on camp staff. If any of you are interested in helping them out during your week at camp I know they would greatly appreciate it. If you eligible for your Brotherhood this would be a great time to fulfill this. Don t forget to remind your Scoutmasters to hold an OA election if you haven t already completed one. OH, by the way have a great summer camp. 12
