NOVEMBER 2014 Praise and Prayer A Wednesday night worship get-together A weekly prayer and praise service is starting on Wednesday, November 5 at 7 PM. It is being organized by Connie Norton and others and the first speaker will be Kevin Keith. It will be a wonderful time to praise God with song, to pray, and to hear a short lesson on His Holy Word. Bring Your Dish Spaghetti Dinner Fund Raiser The youth Group will be hosting a Bring Your Dish Spaghetti Dinner Fund Raiser on November 20, from 4p.m. 7p.m. The money raised will go toward the 2015 Summer Mission Trip. Plates will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, garlic roll, and tea. For those who want to pick up dinner for their family and reheat at a later time, you may also opt to bring your own casserole dish and buy the spaghetti and meat sauce by the quart. We will sell the salad by the quart as well. Desserts will be for sale at that time too. Dinner will be served in the Fellowship Hall. You may choose to eat it there or take it to go. The price for the plates will be $8. The price per quart is still to be determined. Just Walk Across the Room Sharing your Faith by Bill Hybels, Sunday afternoon, November 9 Bill Hybels is the head pastor of Willow Creek Church, and in his warm an engaging style he will share with us via video how to share our faith in friendly and powerful ways. We will intersperse his short lessons with discussions from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday afternoon, November 9. This time of teaching will feature a free lunch from noon to 1 PM. Food Pantry Food Fair Tuesday, November 10 To help those in need to have a thankful thanksgiving, our church is doing our first Food Fair. On Monday, November 10, a truck from the San Antonio Food Bank will be in our church parking lot around 2 PM with 11 pallets of food. We won t know what the pallets contain until we get them, and we will have to separate them and bag them in preparation for handing out the food from 5 to 7 PM. We could use lots of help between 2 and 5 PM to bag the food, and from 5 to 7 PM to hand out the food. Please come and help! Adult Mission Trip November 14-16, Friday through Sunday The Outreach Team is putting together another weekend mission trip for adults. The date for this trip is November 14-16, Friday through Sunday (most people came back Saturday evening). We will be going back to the Eagle Pass area to help the victims of flash floods the went through the area again during the spring. Please mark this date today and participate. Call for details.

3 A Great Church Picnic! Sunday, October 12 This year s Annual Church Picnic was great fun. We had delicious food and good conversation. Some folks played board games, others tossed washers, still others watched the Dallas Cowboys game, and some brave youth and children went swimming. It was a beautiful afternoon and we all enjoyed God s beautiful sunset. Thank you Brad and Nan Boyd for again hosting this fun annual event. Children s Christmas Pageant Our next Sunday school enrichment activity is our annual Children s Christmas pageant, which will take place this year on Sunday evening, December 14, at 6 PM. The Christmas Pageant will take place inside the sanctuary this year and will be a delightful musical called It s a Wonder-Full Life. Part selections and rehearsals are taking place during Sunday school, so please be sure your children are here. If you are interested in helping with this endeavor, talk to Amanda Bodie, or call the church at Trustees News - Tree removal: The tree in the front yard was struck by lightning several months ago. Experts say it is dying, so the Trustees have made arrangements for it to be taken down sometime this month. Our insurance is helping to pay part of the cost. - Rent house coming down: The rent house at the corner of Benton and Mesquite Streets will be taken down in January to make way for parking. The Trustees decided to do this work as a church, so they set Saturday, January 24 as a workday for this purpose. Please mark this day on your calendar. - Memorial for Ruby Reichel: A tree is going to be planted to replace the pecan tree across the driveway from the church bell. A water line will also be installed across the driveway. Work will begin early in the new year (after the tree in the front has been taken down one project at a time). Project Hope: Reaching Out with Love Lytle U.M.C. will again take part in Project Hope this Christmas season. Project Hope brings the light of hope to the children of the neediest families in our area by bringing them Christmas presents and the Good News of Jesus Christ. The children who the church will be helping will either be identified through the Angel Tree, a project of Prison Fellowship Ministry, or they will be identified as needy through the local school system. The Project Hope Angel Tree will be set up in the church parlor starting Sunday, November 23. Please take an angel and be an angel. Emmaus News: Community Gathering at our Church!!!! Congratulations to our newest Emmaus pilgrim: Joy Brown. The next Kononia sponsored walk is men's Emmaus walk #1795 at Mt Wesley April 30 May 3, Rev. Bill Bennett will be the spiritual director for this walk. The first team meeting for this men s walk will be January10, and all the meetings will be at our church. If you re interested in serving on the team for the woman s walk in the fall of 2015, it s not too early to apply. In other Emmaus news, the next Koinonia gathering will be at our church on November 14th. The Koinonia community is made up of Emmaus people, from many denominations, who join together on the second Friday of each month (7:30 PM) for a praise-filled community gathering. For information about Walk to Emmaus, a very special Christian retreat, call the church office, or see the Emmaus bulletin board.

4 Food Pantry Ministry The two Food Pantry days in October saw 115 and 105 families helped, respectfully. Our workers have been terrific, but we can always use more. Just come at 5:30 PM to help prepare for the 6 to 7 PM rush on the first and third Mondays in November (November 3 and 17). We will again be handing out canned goods, as well as frozen meats and fresh fruits and vegetables. Thank you for supporting the Methodist Food Pantry. We have also signed up for our first Food Fair. 5 Thank You The Lytle Area Mission Project Held Saturday, Oct. 18! Thank you to everyone who participated in our LAMP LAMP: program this year. We took on two projects: stripping and painting a front and back porch; and installing sheetrock and taping and floating a front room and hallway. Both of the families we helped have sent thank you cards, and it was a blessing interacting with these families. Some volunteers helped by doing work on that Saturday. Others assisted by providing food and serving a meal on Saturday night, or by finding appropriate jobs, or buying materials beforehand for the work. It was a great project this year. To all those who worked so hard on the quarterly highway trash pick-up day on October 11. Our next Trash pick-up day will be in January. To the United Methodist Women for providing family meals for funerals and at other times of need. To those who participated in our Stewardship Sunday, and to all who give so faithfully to this church. To Ginger Meyer and family for their faithful work as church custodians. Office Hours for the Church and Pastor The church has regular office hours from 9 AM to 1 PM, Tuesday through Thursday. During this time both the church Administrator, Connie Scott, and the pastor, Scott Martin, will are at the church, barring emergencies. Stop by if you need anything or want to talk. They ll be there. You may also call the church office at any time, as the phone is forwarded to the pastor s cell phone. Rose Lynn will be leading the program and there will also be a time for fellowship and refreshments. All the women of the church are invited. Next Interactive Dinner Theater The church is putting together another interactive dinner theater to raise funds for the church s food pantry. For this year this event will take the place of the Spring Banquet/Funfest. This event will take place on Saturday Night, March 21, at 6 PM and Sunday Night, March 22, at 5 PM, and will include dinner. There will also be a silent auction (or live auction) each night so think about what you could donate for the food pantry ministry. We are thinking of doing a Christian Murder Mystery but we haven t made a final decision yet. Sign-ups will take place in December/January, and rehearsals will be on some of the Sundays in January and February. Keep this ministry in your prayers. SMALL GROUP NEWS Many of our weekly small groups that were formed as part of our 40 Day Spiritual Growth Campaign, True Spirituality: Being a Romans 12 Christian have decided to continue to meet. Others will take a Christmas break and then start up again in January. Small groups are a great away to study God s Word, to grow closer to Christ, and to get connected to other loving Christians. 6 Our Church s Purpose To reach out to our community and beyond to share the Good News of Jesus Christ in word and deed, and to welcome people into this body of Christ where we might all be filled with God s strength and vision. Monday Night Guy s Group The Guy s group meets regularly on Monday nights from 7 to 9 PM in the fellowship hall kitchen, backyard and youth building for a time of fellowship, mentoring, and study. The focus is guys gather to lift one another up in their daily Christian walk. Dinner is provided. Hanging of the Greens, Saturday Dec. 6th The Hanging of the Greens--our traditional service of Christmas carols, holly and mistletoe, and beautiful candlelight--will be held Saturday, December 6th, at 7 PM. The Chancel Choir will be singing Christmas hymns, and the congregation will join in for some traditional Christmas carols. Children and adults will help decorate the sanctuary to look its very best for this blessed season. Following the Hanging of the Greens worship service, refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall. During this time of refreshments we will be holding our annual Christmas Cookie Contest!! Cookies will be judged in six categories: Children, youth and adult - best tasting and best looking. Please come to the Hanging of the Greens worship service, and the refreshment time afterwards, and start your season off in the right direction! Order Christmas Poinsettias Once again this year our Sanctuary will be filled with poinsettias for Christmas. Purchasing a poinsettia in memory of, or in honor of, a loved one is a meaningful tribute. This year poinsettias are only $9.00 per plant.
