2 Happenings in our Parish HELP!!! IT S ABOUT TIME!!! We, the older generation, are asking YOU, the younger generation, to take over as church leaders. We will help you in all ways. Please do not say no when asked to contribute. We need your expertise and your energy. Our church cannot survive without a younger group of thinkers and doers. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not hesitate to volunteer. We ve done it for years and it s not so bad. In fact, in working together we have met a wonderful group of people. SO GET INVOLVED!!! On that note, we would like to continue our Christmas Food Baskets this year, but cannot without a new chairperson. Please call Marlene Winters, , and she will instruct you all the way through. We, the oldies, look forward to hearing from you! Our October Warm Clothing drive was very successful. In addition to hats, scarves, mittens and sweaters, 89 coats were given to Mission for Area People (MAP). Many thanks to all who donated. Sacred Heart received a thank you note from MAP, acknowledging that your gift will help keep many of our friends warm this winter. Fr. Phil blesses Sacred Heart s 2019 Confirmation candidates: Kenny Lehan, Casey Cashbaugh, Elana LaGuire, and Ross Sanford. Confirmation will be held at the Cathedral of St. Andrew on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. 2

6 From the Desk of the Facility Maintenance Manager Dear Parishioners, Fall is definitely here. The leaves are dropping and giving me plenty of opportunity to work outside. I was given the green light to use the tractor on the areas that are usually push mowed so I know winter is almost here. There are many people who take time out of their busy schedule to donate some time to help with the gardening and trimming that make such a difference in the way things look; so I would like to thank all of the volunteers who help make our complex the jewel that it is. If you would like to help out in some small way, please feel free to contact me. Recently I was given some help with the forty foot ladder to get up on the rectory roof and repair and clean the gutters. This is obviously one of my favorite jobs of the year, but it is a very necessary endeavor. It seems all of the heat tapes are still functioning properly, and I repaired a few of the terra cotta roof tiles. Please remember that we get large sheets of ice on the copper flat roofs of the rectory, primarily on the north side of the building. When we get those days in the winter when we get a warm up, please be aware of that area. Do not park or walk along the building without considering what is above you. In preparation for winter we had the sprinklers blown out so they do not freeze. It came to my attention that there was a slight issue with some of the main lines that run through the building. A number of the hangers holding the main lines to the ceiling had failed and it was causing undo pressure on the main joint coming in from the well. Needless to say it failed and caused a small leak hence coming to my attention. All is now fixed and the hangers are repaired. The security camera system is up and running and all of them are now recording what is going on around the complex. I would like to say that things are safer in the parking lot after my last article mentioning some of my concerns, but alas there is still some room for improvement. Plowing season is almost here so let us all try to be a little more careful out there. Some of you may have noticed that there was no hot water in the church restrooms. The bathrooms have a small, six gallon electric water heater. Fortunately, after a quick diagnosis, I found the heating element had failed. I replaced the bad part, and all is now well at a considerable savings than replacing the water heater. Just before October 31 st I was getting ready for work and I walked down the hallway of my home and much to my disbelief the sounds of Christmas music met my ear. I knocked on the door of the room it was coming from and I was surprised to hear my daughter, Rylee, singing along with the radio and wearing a pair of Christmas sox matching her outfit for the day. She seemed surprised when I mentioned that we had not even gotten into November and it seemed just a little bit early to be starting the Christmas season. As I started to walk away,i heard her say Dad it is never too early to celebrate the birth of our Lord. All I could think of as I walked away was out of the mouth of babes. May all of you have a Happy Thanksgiving! In closing I will end as always, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful Parish. May God bless and keep all of you safe. Your Brother in Christ Garret A. Kelenske, Facility Maintenance Manager 6

7 Welcome to November, 2018 Have you ever asked yourself, Is that real? Or, What is real? I have to say that I am asking myself about the reality of this being November already. How quickly the days and the months seem to slip by, but the reality is, so much depends on one s age and point of view. While it may be slipping by way too quickly for me, for some teen who is looking forward to driving and increased independence, time may be just a drag. Whatever you think or feel, the reality is, November is here. Perhaps we should pray together: Heavenly Father, thank you for this day, this month, this year. Thank you for being able to hear, to touch, to see, to walk this morning and every morning. Provide a way for those who lack any of what we so often take for granted, and help us to humbly praise you with gratitude. Lord, we are blessed because you are a forgiving God, and an understanding God. Continue to bless us, our families, and our friends. May we always be thankful. Thank you for all the doors you have opened in our lives, and help us to understand the doors that have been closed. Grant us the Wisdom to understand both. Forgive us our sins and imperfections, known and unknown, spoken and unspoken, and continue to keep us safe from all dangers and fears. Let us begin each day, each month, each year with gratitude and humility. We ask this in the name of Jesus who lives and reigns with the Father and Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen Just a couple days ago, Loretta and I traveled Interstate 10 through the area hit by Hurricane Michael. A week had passed and the damage we could see from the freeway was mind boggling. Thousands and thousands of trees broken and shattered, and what was left looked like broken toothpicks pointing skyward. In addition, road signs were demolished, rest areas closed, and many, many roof tops what we could see covered with tarps and canvas. We for the most part were some distance from the shore where the damage was even greater, from what we have seen on TV. We drove for more than an hour viewing that same damage surrounding us on both sides of the road. The hurricane footprint is huge. We need to continue to help as best as we can those folks hurt so much by Michael and Florence. The need is great and God calls us to be one with him in spirit and in our willingness to raise others up. We give you praise, Lord of heaven and earth, for you are the strength of your people, in good times and bad. Now, after this time of destruction, be a source of love and care for those who have been damaged and lost. You have told us in the Bible: Deep waters cannot quench love, nor floods sweep it away. [Song of Songs 8:7] Let your everlasting love for us be our hope, this day and every day, as we live here once again. Let our love for you withstand every storm and difficulty, never to be swept from our hearts. Amen ~ Deacon Dave 7
