2 Glenwood Place Retirement Community Volume 6 Issue 1...from the Office of Pamela Wells As I reflect on 2013 I am feeling so very blessed to have the opportunity to share in the lives of our families here at Glenwood Place. I have made so many friends along this journey. We have shared so many holidays, meals and memories. There are no words to describe the everyday happiness and joy that I feel, I am lucky to spend so much time with these wonderful people. At night one resident will pass by my office and say Good Night and I ll say See you in the morning and she will reply hope so how can you not love this job! We continue to grow our family as we added a new townhome and additional 2 new families. We look forward to 2014 and possibly adding to our already growing community. My parents moved to Glenwood Place in 2013 and I m so lucky to see them every day and know that they are safe and happy. I m so proud of the many projects that we completed this year. Landscaping, generator hook-up, new emergency system, new paint throughout the community, new mini van, new beverage center, new aquarium, new salon redo and we have many projects slated for 2014 too! I was nominated and honored as Iowa s Administrator of the Year in 2013, but I know this award is not only for me but for the entire community of residents and staff at Glenwood Place. I want to thank everyone, as it takes this entire community to receive this recognition. 3 Glenwood Place 2013: a year in review Changing Outside....and inside

4 From our Culinary Department Mandarin Orange Bread 1 cup sugar 1/2 to 1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 eggs 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cup undiluted frozen orange juice 2 cups flour 6 ounce can mandarin oranges, drained Mix sugar, butter and eggs until fluffy. In separate bowl, mix orange juice, buttermilk and baking soda. Mixture will foam. Add to sugar and butter mixture. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into loaf pan which has been greased and floured. Bake at 350 for one hour or until toothpick comes out clean. Note: you can use 2 small bread loaf pans. Here is to a Healthy and Happy 2014! 8 Glenwood Place Red Hatters December Mitten Tree Party Glenwood Place Red Hatters met December 11. Members and guest were served hot tea, hot chocolate and cookies. We sang Christmas songs and talked about Christmases past. Members Ruth Logue and her daughter Kathy McCune gave two sacks of mittens. Bette Etter gave 200 tickets, Freida McInroy gave 100 tickets. The guest who came furthest away was Sharon Conrad from Minnesota! In all, gifts for the mitten tree were seventeen hats, two scarves and 89 pairs of gloves and mittens. Sixty-one canned goods and thirty one packages of macaroni and cheese were also donated to the Salvation Army. It was discussed about hosting a blood drive in the near future. Queen Mother Janet Mason closed the meeting with a tribute to Glenwood Place Manager Pamela Wells and a prayer. Hostesses were Lola, Betty and Jody. Until next month, Jody

9 From Dennis in Maintenance Thanks for your patience when the electricity was out and the new generator was installed. It was a very successful venture and a great one to have completed as we head toward winter. That finished out what was a very busy year for the maintenance department. Many hours were spent landscaping, planting flowers and trees and can t wait to see the beautiful grounds next spring. The new carpet is ordered and on it s way, hopefully by the tine this is sent to print we will hnave it installed and ready to walk on. I want to thank Steve Schmidt for the help and hard work on many of the projects around the community. Thank also to Jerry for his continued work to keep the residents happy. Here s to the next steps in 2014! Dennis From the Laundry Basket of Janet Mason Happy New Year!! Year 2013 is now the past and we are looking forward to I know it is hard to make New Year Resolutions, however it is good to set goals. If there is anything laundry can do for you please let me know! I am very excited.we have a new wash machine!! So there is something new in our department! Remember, Carol is here to help you with your mending needs. May 2014 be a great year for all of you! Janet...from the desk of Natalie Boles, Assistant Manager Blood donation matters everyday for cancer patients undergoing treatment, for accident and trauma patients, and for individuals being treated for various blood disorders. LifeServe Blood Center collects over 3,000 pints of blood a week to meet the needs of patients in 105 hospitals in central Iowa. January is National Blood Donation Month and we would like to make a difference in our community by holding a blood drive at Glenwood Place. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would be willing to donate blood and save lives. 11 Nancy-sledding on the Skyler hill Charming-Stranded a week with small children when living south of town and a big storm hit! Cindy-Sledding with dad Dave-1936 going to my grandparents and the snowbanks were higher than the car Minerva-Getting snowed in at the Holiday Inn Jean Eige-Ice skating, sliding down hills and making snowmen Carolyn-A winter with tons of snow, lots of wind and making tunnels through it that 7 of us could play in. Also sledding and flying over frozen cow-pies! Carol-Sledding, big groups with the kids. There was hot chocolate and bonfires. Pamela-Ice Skating on our pond Janet Mason-When I had to drive for my job and was caught in a blizzard. i was following a semi, praying he didn t go in the ditch! Dennis-me and my buddies building snow caves Bette-sliding down the hill behind the soldier s home on cardboard boxes Esther-It was cold! Helen L.-Getting snowed in at the farm and only having wood heat Marilyn-So much snow and all five of us playing in it Kayla-an april blizzard that snowed me in at my aunt and uncle s and the snow drifts covering my swing set. 12 LIFE ENRICHMENT 2013 was quite a year! There were new residents, the passing of other residents, We had bus trips, music performances, speakers, birthday parties, games, garage sales, special dinners and lots of laughs. There was redecorating, tree planting, rock moving, and generator hooking up. And for me personally there is a grandson legally becoming a son and the upcoming birth of my baby s baby. My husband and I took and amazing two week vacation with my parents. Some of the countryside we saw will be for ever embedded in my mind. Heading to 2014 has me facing one of those birthdays involving a 0 that I have dreaded. To be honest I never dealt with the last 0 birthday, spending lots of time lying about my age... so often I had to do the math when I had to legitimately give my age! But one thing being around the residents daily has helped me with is growing old gracefully. Yes, age is just a number, youth is a state of mind. So keeping my state of mind young will hopefully keep me going for a long long time! I go into the new year thankful. Thankful for my wonderful supportive husband, thankful for my beautiful daughter and soon-to-come grandbaby, for my parents, my extended family and my in-laws. I am also thankful for the days the residents of Glenwood Place allow me to spend my days with them. I hope we continue to have fun, stay active and grow as a community into Here s to good health and many of God s blessings!
