3 From the editor Season of mists and mellow fruifulness - Ode to Autumn by John Keats It seems hard to believe that Autumn is almost upon us; often a time for reflection and taking stock. It is also a wonderful time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in which we live. Our feature article by Jeremy Mynott (pg.4-6) showcases the wonders of Shingle Street and invites local residents to record any unusual sightings - so see you down there! Kingfisher at Shingle Street pumping station This stunning photo of a Kingfisher taken by Frank Berry is testimony to the wildlife that is so abundant in and around Shingle Street. Frank Berry Also featured this month are events taking place at Shingle Street (pg.21), Suffolk Punch Trust (pg.22) and Ramsholt Heritage Day (pg.24). The new school reporters introduce themselves (pg.11) and your views about Hollesley Community Garden s future are invited (pg.13). Hollesley Bowls Club is also seeking new members (pg.29) and would welcome anyone, young or old to go along and try out their facilities on a Wednesday or Sunday afternoon from 2-4pm. Why not give it a whirl! Plenty to see and do in our various local communities - and also enjoy the mists and mellow fruitfulness! 4 Life in Shingle Street There are just twenty-nine dwellings in Shingle Street and a shifting population of some sixty adults and children but that s only the population of homo sapiens. We are surrounded by a much greater number of other life forms and in this year of 2015, we are trying to record them all and discover just who else Bill Baston Little Tern is living here. The project is rather grandly described as a Biodiversity Survey, but that really means a listing of all the wildlife birds, mammals, flowers, butterflies and moths, amphibians, grasshoppers and crickets, bees, snails, crustaceans, molluscs, the lot. You can read all about it on our website at and see some lovely images there of the species we have identified. The purpose of this article is to explain why we undertook it, what we have so far discovered and how people can still help. The idea came about when we were thinking about the best ways of protecting Shingle Street from the various risks we face and were trying to define what it is that makes Shingle Street such a special place. The reason why Shingle Street is already classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has nothing to do with the beauty or interest of its human residents, I m afraid, remarkable though they no doubt are. It s all down to the wildlife. For such a small place there is an extraordinary diversity and abundance of flora and fauna here. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded, over 20 species of terrestrial mammals, well over 200 kinds of native flowering plants, some 300 species of moths, at least 25 butterfly species and a vast number of other invertebrate insects. Many people will be familiar with some of the more Page 4 September 2015 ww.villagevoices.org.uk

5 charismatic species at Shingle Street the dainty little terns, the soaring skylarks (we have one of the highest densities of this declining species anywhere), the ghostly white barn owls, the painted lady butterflies and humming-bird hawkmoths that migrate here over the sea from Europe, and the gorgeous displays of such specialized shingle plants as the sea kale, sea pea and yellowhorned poppies; but we also have a wealth of less glamorous creatures like Bill Baston Barn Owl with prey crickets, snails, slugs and spiders (over 70 kinds of the latter would you believe, and not just the sort you get in the bath). Some of these are so rare that they only have Latin scientific names and some so small that you need an expert even to spot them. Fortunately, we do have such an expert leading the survey, Toby Abrehart, a professional ecologist. He has been peering into the lagoons, crawling along the sea-walls and delving into the vegetation to discover these tiny delights. He s turned up a minute sea-slug, Limapontia depressa, just 3mm long, which may be the first ever Suffolk record; and on a stretch of sea-wall an equally tiny snail, Vertigo angustior or Narrow-mouthed whorl snail to you and me, which is a national rarity. But this is also a community effort and we have teams of local residents conducting surveys of the mammals, reptiles and butterflies to supplement Toby s efforts and feed all this information into the central database of records. Other Shingle Street regulars like Laurie Forsyth are adding botanical data, Nick Mason is running some moth-trapping events, and there will be bird-ringing demonstrations and other activities to draw more people into the project. You ll also see on the website a section for Records by Residents, where anyone can Page 5 September 2015

6 jot down interesting observations of a more informal kind. Do please add to these if you come across anything noteworthy (you can have a password on request from: info@shinglestreetsurvey.org.uk). At the end of the year, we hope to have finished (as complete as possible) an audit of the other species and we shall be publishing a full report of our findings. We see this as creating an important resource that can be periodically updated and that should serve as a benchmark for monitoring changes to this rich but sensitive environment. It ought to become a point of reference for all future discussions of the conservation and protection of the area. There will also be later opportunities to derive from such a survey various more accessible and popular publications for residents and visitors alike, such as information booklets on local walks and natural history. Margaret Holland Painted lady butterfly Quite apart from any practical or political benefit there is in having compiled such an inventory of the natural wealth of the area, we hope it will be worth doing for its own sake, too. Britain s wildlife is currently threatened as never before and it has been estimated that in the last fifty years, we have lost over half the wildlife of this country. That is a staggering statistic. In this situation it is increasingly important Yellow-horned poppies for local communities to document and celebrate the biodiversity of the areas in which they live. The SS survey is envisaged as a small step in addressing this need and it is hoped that it might then serve as a model for other communities on the Suffolk coast, who could thereby pool their results and resources and act jointly to protect our endangered environment. 8 Church letter Dear Friends, September is a busy month! Everything seems to start up again not just schools and colleges but all sorts of other activities too. It is a time when many people s thoughts turn towards harvest and to preserving and storing the food that has been growing around us. For us, in this part of the world, there is so much plenty, so much evidence of the goodness of creation. While the account of creation in the Bible should not be taken as literally and historically accurate, it reminds us of two truths which most faiths agree about: that the universe has a Creator and that the natural world (including human beings) is, essentially, good. The goodness of creation is something we can all celebrate whether by sharing a meal with friends and family, coming to a service of Harvest Thanksgiving or taking time to look at the world around us. Go out into the natural world and look with God's eyes; listen with God's ears; know your place within God's good creation. Fr. 11 Hollesley School - best trip ever! Unfortunately, James and Bethany our previous school reporters, are leaving and as we are typing this, the year sixes are getting ready to leave Hollesley Primary School because it s the last day of term. Because of that, next year we have the chance to be the new school reporters which we can t wait to be and we can t wait till next year because this year was awesome! We have been here since we were four years old; we are unidentical twins. We would tell you more From l-r: Danielle and Stevie Smith about ourselves but we would like to concentrate on the exciting event that took place last week! Contributed On Friday 17th July we went to the first ever Schools Day at the Latitude Festival which everyone thought was great and the best school trip we had ever been on. When the letters were handed out about the Latitude Festival trip everyone wanted to go! Nonetheless, not everyone had the chance to. We expected there to be loads of people there and to be tons of great activities. We were right! But luckily, we were in the children s area so that was OK! We assumed that we would be sitting down all the time listening to music or watching people dancing or something like that. But we were both completely wrong! There were loads of fun activities to do and enjoy including: watching a mermaid show; making massive bubbles; doing circus tricks; making music; listening to music and story writing. You could also swim in a river (which we didn t do).there was also a main stage which we sadly didn t see but we did see the Waterfront stage. Additionally, there were some funny bits like when we saw some pink sheep. Also when we went to wash our hands, there were people washing up their plates and cutlery as they were camping! It was an epic day and we hope to do it again next year. As you read this the previous year sixes will be starting Farlingaye and we all wish them the best of luck! Meanwhile we will be welcoming our twelve new reception children. As your new school reporters we will be keeping you up to date with the latest news that happens in school. We both can t wait until we write our next report! School reporters Stevie and Danielle Smith Page 11 September 2015

13 Community Garden News What do you think? The garden is looking good! The glass in the greenhouse has been fitted now and is ready for anyone who cares to use it. We have been able to harvest strawberries, raspberries, currants, gooseberries and the runner beans are now ready for picking. The Echiums donated by Margaret on School Lane have looked fantastic soaring high above the plot, we are hoping they will set seed so we'll have some for sale at next year s fete. Before and after shots of Hollesley Community Garden - Cheryl Gray The community garden was a two year trial and the time has come to review the project. We are sure those of you who remember what the plot looked like at the outset, can see how much has been achieved from the photos above. Do you visit the garden to have a look what's growing or just to sit and enjoy? It doesn't matter if you don't come to the monthly work parties but we'd like to know if you would like the garden to continue. The garden has been a great way to get to know other villagers. If you are new to the village it's a really good way of meeting new people. We have been told that some villagers visit the garden but we really need to know that you'd like us to continue to cultivate it for you. If you feel you would like this project to continue, please let Sue know on or drop a note into the B&B on Rectory Road. Lorraine Foster and Sue Taylor Ken Dearing Page 13 September 2015

15 Ringers corner July was always going to be an awkward month with people coming and going to and from holidays. However by the end of the month, most of us were back in time for the Bells and Buns evenings. Whilst we did not expect a massive turnout, we were pleased to welcome sufficient visitors to our practice to make both sessions very worthwhile (most came on the second Friday when the heavens opened!). We started with a brief explanation of how bells are Ring out those bells! rung in the English style as opposed to the various forms of chiming found in other parts of the world, and then invited people to have a go under supervision. Having got that far some wanted to repeat the exercise, but for others the temptation of buns prepared by the ringers and a cup of tea/coffee proved too much. Afterwards we gave a demonstration of call change ringing and method ringing. We wait to see whether anyone takes up our offer of free tuition! We will probably repeat this idea at a later date, but of course we will give the same welcome to anyone who would like to join us on a Friday evening at 7.30, but we can t guarantee the buns! In August we have rung at weddings and the Suffolk Guild Mini-Ring at Sutton Country Fayre and a few social events. Peter Harper Village Voices Website Due to technical problems the Village Voices website is not up to date at the moment, but hopefully things can quickly be sorted out. Data corruption makes it impossible to access the website for now. However, the important data has not been lost, and the latest version can still be seen at Apologies for any inconvenience, Danny Bethell 34th Saturday 12 September 9am - 5pm Sponsor forms: available from Joan Butcher (411689) or in Hollesley Church along with a list of open churches (Boyton Mission will be open but unfortunately is not included on the list). Money raised is divided between the Trust and the Church of your choice, last year this event raised 145,000. Please do take part! A fun way to raise funds and the refreshments at the churches really make it worthwhile! 16 St Margaret s Church, Shottisham The Parochial Church Council of Shottisham Church has received a confirmed grant of 93,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to carry out urgent repairs to the tower of this Grade II Listed Church. Following gradual deterioration and short-term repair over many years, the tower will now be scaffolded for the comprehensive repair of cracks and eroded and loose masonry. This will ensure the current and future structural integrity of the Church tower and also allow the Church building to continue to function as a worship and community space. With repair work due to start this Autumn, a number of events and initiatives are planned so that visitors can discover more about the project and the Church s unique heritage. Contributed Shottisham church tower Watch out for the launch of a new trail, part of the Angels and Pinnacles Church Heritage Trails, linking Shottisham Church with all the local churches. Sandlings Primary School is also involved in the project, creating an unbelievably strong paper tower. See their work projected onto the church this coming Bonfire Night in a spectacular light show! 17 Your letters - do please write to us Dear Editor, I have been teaching the men in Warren Hill prison to knit, the aim of the project is to teach them to make squares that will then be made into blankets and given to the homeless through the Robes Project. My problem is that I need more yarn and I was wondering if you could ask your readers if they have any spare yarn they would be happy to donate? No amount too small as I am also teaching crochet (this I am having to learn and am just ahead of the men!) Many thanks, Wanted! Wool - Wool - Wool - Wool Fanny Jacob Fanny Jacob Malcolm/Pat Fleetwood Dear Editor, It seems that every few months we get a letter about dog poo. As a responsible owner I try hard to pick up any visible poo. But hang on a minute - what about cats? Their poo causes toxoplasmosis, which can kill or mutate unborn babies, but nobody seems to mention this. Also, as any gardener will confirm, you are far more likely to come into contact with cat poo because they do it in gardens - usually flowerbeds. And no, a light coating of soil doesn't help! These creatures also destroy birds and small mammals. 18 The WI in England and Wales is 100 years old in Five members attended the celebratory National AGM on 4 June at the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, the Princess Royal and the Countess of Wessex, also WI members. Inspiring speakers at the event included Lucy Worsley, social historian and Curator of the Royal Palaces; Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, olympic athlete and crossbench member of the House of Lords; and Helen Morrissey CBE, CEO of a City fund management company, The centennial AGM in the Albert Hall one of the first women to reach board room level. The National Resolution aimed at achieving effective assessment of health and social care needs, met with contention: as a last-minute amendment the changing of the wording was suggested. Long discussion resulted in a vote against, due to imprecise wording. The resolution will now return to members for further discussion and amendment in order for it to have a more positive effect. Leiston WI kindly provided a screening of the historic AGM at Sizewell Leisure Centre, working hard to provide generous refreshments for a large number of WI groups. Several Hollesley WI members attending at Leiston Hollesley members attended this enjoyable day which was marred only by poor WIFI signals interfering at times with transmission. Contributed Hollesley WI Another special event was the Buckingham Palace Garden Party on 2nd June, to which past and present Presidents Rosemary Busby and Joan Butcher were invited. They had a wonderful day, in spite of hanging on to their hats in gale force winds! If you would like to find out about the WI or to join in our activities, why not visit our website: sefwi.org.uk/institute/hollesley or come to one of our meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, such a good way of making new friends. 20 A beach is born Our coastline is dynamic and ever changing. Without a good, solid rock cliff to protect it, storms and everyday tides have cut into the soft sands and clay since the end of the last glacial period. Thousands of tons of boulders brought from Norway to shore up places like East Lane at Bawdsey is one answer, but it can only be a short-term measure. Long-term, who knows what the North Sea will deliver? Perhaps our great-grandchildren will stand on the shore at East Lane and peer out to sea at an island crowned by a Martello Tower, and surrounded by grey Norwegian boulders. People who know more than me about the coast and longshore drift connect the boulders with the rapid loss of beach shingle in front of Bawdsey Manor: old sea defences that were buried by shingle a long time ago are now exposed. Laurie Forsyth When they were constructed, the Manor beach was accumulating shingle, but now it is being washed away. Movement of shingle along our coast by tides and currents has fluctuated for centuries and it doesn t take much imagination to think that anything that impedes the flow could have unforeseen knock-on consequences some where else. I don t pretend to know the answer to coastal erosion, and I don t think there is one, because we are dealing with an unstoppable combination of natural forces in climate change and rising sea level chewing at our soft coast. I think we all know that the North Sea will gradually change the map of East Anglia in a big way. The people of Dunwich experienced it first-hand. Meanwhile, a small, sandy beach has formed beneath the Martello Tower at East Lane. It owes its existence to those same Norwegian boulders. Their bulk acts as a breakwater for the beach. When the rising tide percolates through the boulders, it carries sand that is then dropped to form the beach. At high tide, you can just about swim a few strokes in the small pool. The beach must be the newest and smallest in East Anglia and possible the UK! Laurie Forsyth Martello Beach at East Lane Page 20 September

21 Time and Tide at Shingle Street On 26th September we will be holding an event to celebrate the history of Shingle Street and raise funds for the Shingle Street Preservation Society. Time and Tide will feature a reconstruction of the cafe kiosk that was at the far end of the beach in the 60s and will be serving tea, coffee, home made cakes, scones and biscuits and ice cream. There will also be a display of old photographs of Shingle Street, classic cars, a BBQ serving delicious Dingley Dell hotdogs and burgers, and a local produce stall. The event will run from 11am to 5pm. Please follow the signs for parking. We hope to see you then. 23 From our country kitchen Peperonata ( from Sarah Raven's Garden Cookbook) I've made this for two years running and it's a marvellous way of preserving capsicum peppers. If you don't grow them, they are usually very cheap on market stalls at this time of year. For 1 jar: 4 red peppers 2 yellow peppers 2 tbls caster sugar 200 ml white wine vinegar 200 ml extra virgin olive oil Roast the peppers whole for half an hour in a medium (180C / gas 4) oven. Put them in a bowl and cover with cling film for 5 minutes. When cool enough to handle, skin, de-seed and cut into thin strips. Put them in a pan, add the sugar and vinegar and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes. Put the mixture into a warm sterilised jar, filling it to the top and cover with olive oil. Secure the lid, turn the jar upside down and wrap it in plenty of cloth. (I used an old towel). Leave it for a couple of days so it cools slowly, which aids the preserving. It should keep for over a year, but once opened, keep in the fridge. Pauline Austerfield Suffolk Heritage Garden The weeks of dry weather in July were a challenge for the garden. So far, we have only lost one small magnolia and an apple tree. We began watering in earnest just before the big rain at the end of July. It all helped the rain to soak into the ground. The orchard is looking good and we should have some apples come the autumn. It has been strimmed and cleared now that the flower seeds have had time to drop. Wild flowers sown by children from Sandlings and Kyson schools to encourage pollinating insects. The children's veg plots got off to a slow start but they were able to harvest some beans, carrots and courgettes before the end of term. The children are encouraged to come and harvest through the holidays, some do, but the rest of the produce goes to volunteers. Miggie Wyllie Page 23 September 2015 Miggie Wyllie

As a bi-annual, you only see half of what it is each year, with new wind-blown seeds seeking out their opportunities like migrants the world over. Ragwort is leap-frogging along our lanes and highway verges. Contributed This rampant increase was initiated in the early 1970 s by a set aside Act that paid landowners to leave unproductive land to weeds, giving ragwort the space to expand but sadly few other weeds can compete! A large area of land situated on the Hollesley side of the Boyton crossroads has been sprayed but the highway verges have not. Hopefully this is a prelude to the owner putting some heart back into the lanes. The vast out-of-sight, out-of-mind area of ragwort backing onto the Mary Warner Homes, would be better used by their Trust as a solar energy farm. Locally, this would benefit Suffolk Punch Trust which has a terrible ragwort problem (see pg.27), which continues to rampage. We cannot allow this weed to prosper and invade our habitat at Mary Warner Homes. Ken Dearing Page 25 September 2015

27 Ironman Having read about Julie Joliffe s efforts on the yomp, I felt compelled to write about my son Giles Ironman effort. Giles was born and bred in Hollesley. On 21st June, at he jumped into Ellingham Lake in the New Forest. He spent an hour swimming 3.1 miles, quickly changed, and then set off on a 120 mile bike ride. He s pretty good at that as he has cycled long distances around the world. After that he put on a different t-shirt and ran a marathon not all on the straight, but with some pretty difficult climbs. This ironman event (or Forestman as it is called there) took him 12 hours five minutes. The running didn t come that easily to him but he maintained a good speed and was only overtaken by one other competitor. Emerging after 3 miles in water Now aged 32, he had put in a heck of a lot of training for this event. I was completely impressed, and proud, of this achievement he actually ended up 8th out of about 58 starters. In fact they all finished some of them after it got dark impressive every one. Nick Mason Nick Mason On bike with smile! Germaine, my daughter, and I had a wonderful day out cheering him on and meeting other supporters. We ended up cheering half the field! Giles was himself cheered on by young women that presumably kept him going! To wind down after the event he spent the next week at Glastonbury! I suppose you have to support them in these ventures but I am pretty sure that he won t be doing another one thank goodness - as I m not sure that the body should take that much pressure? 29 Hollesley bowlers win their own Open! In July, twenty-two blocks of players (a block consists of three players) from Woodbridge and Ipswich entered our annual Millennium Shield Competition, instigated in Previous winners have mainly come from Ipswich and have included several County Players, who have appreciated the excellence of Hollesley s bowling facilities. Our playing surface and the pavilion have been complimented by bowlers who have expressed their desire to come again. The Hollesley entries are restricted to one or two blocks and are mainly held in reserve for last minute cancellations. Tony Camsey was one skip with Chris Blackstone and Rex The excellent playing surface of Hollesley Bowls Club Allum making up the block. They won their three allotted games with maximum points and went into the final against a team headed by Ken King, who had won on three previous years. He conceded defeat due to a sudden downpour when trailing 6 13 with one end to play! Tony, Chris and Rex shared the 100 first prize. A tournament of this size requires many helpers to cover the playing arrangements with six rinks in use from 10.00am to the final at 4.30pm. Rosemary Busby and Marian Collins organised the refreshments for about 75 visitors, the players and a few spectators. Tea and coffee were available all day. Lunches were served: gammon or quiche with salad, filled rolls, sausage rolls and cakes. The catering would not have been possible without the generous help of members wives and friends, especially doing the seemingly endless washing-up! Fortunately, rain did not arrive to disrupt play until the last few minutes of the final. Because of the overcast weather, spectators were fewer than normal but there was a very worthwhile contribution to the club s running costs through entry fees, refreshments and a well-supported raffle. Our tireless greenkeeper, Roy Collins will be able to afford the many expensive chemicals and machine maintenance needed for the upkeep of the green! The Club is very concerned about the low intake of new members. Bowls has a reputation of being a game for old people, but to succeed you need to start at an early age! The facilities are there so do come and try them! One young person has joined and after a little tuition is good enough to play inter-club matches. We hope this will inspire others to join. After all, you only need to watch the sport on television to see the success of many of the young players! Cheryl Gray Roy Winchester Page 29 September

31 Contributed Avocets at Shingle Street The avocet is one of those birds familiar to everyone as a symbol, even if they have never actually seen one in the wild. It is the emblem of the RSPB, prominently displayed on all their stickers, property and branded gift items. It was chosen as their logo partly because the avocet is such a beautiful bird with those elegant powder-blue legs and that striking porcelain plumage, but mainly because it represents one of the RSPB s most famous success stories. Avocets had become extinct in Britain in the mid-nineteenth century, but they miraculously re-appeared just after the Second World War on the Suffolk coast and bred at Havergate Island, where the colony was guarded by the RSPB as a closely-kept secret. Avocets have now spread out much more widely, but they remain a heavily protected star species at Havergate and in other coastal reserves like Minsmere and the new Hollesley Marshes. You can t rely on birds to do the sensible thing, however, and always to set up home where we want them. Little terns, for example, sometimes breed just outside the secure accommodation we provide for them on the beach at Shingle Street; this year a pair of avocets have done something similar and nested right alongside the sea-wall footpath from Shingle Street to East Lane. Several of us have been watching over them like nervous grandparents, convinced they would suffer from too much human disturbance there or lose their eggs and young to marauding foxes, dogs and crows. Somehow they have managed to bring it off, though, and there are now three good-sized young running around the pools with their parents and showing every sign of making it to adulthood. A timely reminder that nature is nature and plays by its own rules! Jeremy Mynott News from the Boyton Missiom God's word in the Bible, implores us to: Seek you first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and everything else will be added to you; therefore do not worry, for our heavenly Father knows all the needs that you require - and will supply them all - Just when you need them - for He loves you with an everlasting-love. Matthew 6: (31-34) So that we may experience: Love: inexhaustible - boundless and free Faith: un-shakeable Joy:un-speakable Peace: un-fathomable God: un-stoppable Our preachers for September are: 6th Robert Foster (Comm.), 13th NO SERVICE (M.V.P. engagement), Sat. 19th M.V.P. at Hollesley Bay, 20th Chris Jarrat, 27th Ray Kemp. 37 Risk of flooding in Boyton You may remember the flash flood in June that turned the roads in Boyton into rivers, as captured by Tony Pajak on camera. At our last Parish Council meeting, we discovered at least one household had been dismayed to see this pop up river coursing through their garden threatening to enter the house. Fortunately the house stayed dry by a whisker, but it was a worrying time and raised the question of how a more serious incident could be avoided in the future. Floods affecting gardens and outbuildings in the same area of the village were tackled by Suffolk County Council Highways department last winter. However another resident at the Capel end of the village has since reported water running down from The Street into their house during the June flood, which shows that the problem is not confined to one area alone. Whilst Boyton PC is aware of the inconvenience of road flooding, as is anyone driving out of Boyton towards Capel St Andrew, the issue of potential flooding to property is something that the council would like to help address urgently, in consultation with the relevant parties. Tony Pajak Flash-flooding in Boyton In order to gain a more complete picture of the risk of flooding to property in Boyton, it would be helpful if you could contact us if you have had a near miss or actual flooding from water off the roads in your garden or house. Please could you contact any of the councillors as soon as possible. All contact details are on our website: and on the herb garden notice board or boytonpc@gmail.com or phone the clerk Boyton Parish Council Hollesley Community Café Everyone who visited Hollesley Community Café over the last two years is extremely grateful to Bev Lambert for organising it and wish her every success in her future projects. Please phone or me by 10 September with offers of help. The first café would be towards the end of October but only if there is sufficient support.
