2 The Small Church with the Big Heart that Does Great Things continues to touch our wider community with warmth, love, and grace through monthly Mission Sundays. We took worship on the road to Terrace Place on Sunday, May 20 th. This was our fourth visit. Both the residents and staff have come to greatly appreciate our bringing a full worship service to their facility. We are the only church to do this! Way to go St. John s! 75 people (evenly split between St. John s members and Terrace Place residents) gathered to hear our wonderful Bell Choir, Chime Choir, and Sunday School Choir; and then enjoy delicious treats provided by the Bell Choir. Thank you to all who helped set up and tear down. I greatly appreciate all your efforts. Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of the residents makes it all worth it. Thank you for your faithful witness to our Lord Jesus Christ. The SHIFT Team had planned for our next Mission Sunday to be June 24 th. However, due to a number of challenges, plans have not come to fruition. As such, the Team has decided that we will take June off. The hope is that plans will better fall into place next year. Stay tuned!! Our next Mission Sunday will be Family Worship in the Park on Sunday, July 15 th. We will gather at 9:15 a.m. at Memorial Park, Howards Grove (406 N River Pkwy). There will be no service held in the church building that Sunday. I encourage you to invite friends, neighbors, and coworkers to this service. It will be informal and shorter (about 45 minutes). The SHIFT Team will provide Sloppy Joes and buns Potato Chips Napkins Lawn games You should bring New school supplies for our offering to Nino a Nino A dish to share. Your own place setting (the Team encourages bringing non-disposable silverware, etc.) Your own beverage A lawn chair (Pastor Melinda s article continued on next page)
3 (Pastor Melinda s article continued from prior page) Our August Mission Sunday will be on Friday, August 3 rd when we gather at the home of Vicki & Dave Wagner for Family Bonfire Church. There will be no church on Sunday, August 5 th. Again, to connect with our wider community, I encourage you to invite friends, neighbors, and coworkers to this service. It too will be informal and shorter. The Schedule is 6:00 pm gather at the Wagner s 6:15-7:00 pm Family Bonfire Church with Communion 7:00 pm Fellowship and Lawn Games The SHIFT Team will provide Makings for S mores You should bring Medical supplies for our offering to Mano a Mano (bandages, medical tape, gauze, etc.) A snack to share Your own beverage A lawn chair As you can see, exciting things continue to happen at St. John s as we explore and experiment with ways to serve Christ in our neck of the woods and make a difference in our world. So, let us not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time, we will harvest a crop if we don t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all (Galatians 6:9-10, The Message) Shalom, Pastor Melinda Reminder.please keep in mind that Mondays are Pastor Melinda s day off. If you need to reach her and it s an emergency, feel free to contact her. We ask that any non-emergency items wait till Tuesday. 6 2018 HAROLD REINECK SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT According to the written guidelines, the Harold Reineck Scholarship is available to members of St. John s UCC Schwarzwald who are pursuing at least a two year degree in ministry, nursing or teaching; enrolled in the Wisconsin Conference UCC Lay Academy Lay Leadership Skills (year 3) ; or enrolled in the Wisconsin Conference UCC Lay Academy Lay Ministry Skills (year 4). Tim Keenan has been awarded the Harold Reineck Scholarship for 2018 to help defray costs of his third year in the United Church of Christ Lay Academy. In his application, Tim noted that Lay Academy is a ministry of the Wisconsin Conference that engages lay people in spiritual growth and development through theological education. As I near retirement, I want to serve God and the church in a new capacity in whatever form of ministry that God calls me to. The Scholarship Committee (comprised of the Church Council President, Vice-President, and Secretary) unanimously felt that Tim was a very worthy recipient of this scholarship and was pleased to award the Harold Reineck Scholarship to Tim to help further his education. UPDATE ON THE CAMPITAL AND LAKELAND UNIVERSITY COMMITMENTS The Church Council is pleased to share with the congregation that as of Sunday, May 13, we have received an additional $2,475 towards our commitments to the two Wisconsin Conference camps at Green Lake and Moon Beach and the endowed chair in Lakeland University s Religion Department in memory of Dr. Reinhard Ulrich. This reduces our remaining balance to $13, In addition, the Church Council is sponsoring a Brat Fry at Miesfeld s on Friday, May 25, with half of the proceeds going towards these two funds. We thank everyone who responded to the letter asking for your special contribution. We had many generous gifts which we greatly appreciated. If you have not already had a chance to contribute, you can still do so at any time that it is financially feasible for you to do so. Also remember that it is possible for you to contribute each week to each of these funds using your regular offering envelopes. We thank you very much for your faithful support. Check out Scrip before & after worship. Scrip gift cards can be ordered to do your everyday shopping or they also make a great gift! If you don t know if Scrip has a certain gift card, just ask.
