1 First United Methodist Church Clover, SC September 2018 From the Pastor With September comes a rush of activity. Students have reengaged with school, Teachers are back at the Daily grind. Football is back each weekend and practices for a myriad of sports are in full swing. Mission: We, the congregation, in humble and selfless service to God, will go forth joyfully, empowered and enabled by the Holy Spirit, to seek out, welcome, accept, and nurture persons to become faithful and effective disciples for Jesus Christ. In church life, we wait until the weekend after Labor Day to expect our congregation to get into a regular routine of coming to church on Sundays and Wednesdays. Our Family Fellowship Meals begin again on September 12 th and BIG (Believers in God/ Children s Meetings, Tweens and Youth,) begin again the same night, and we have three Bible Studies/ Small Groups that are being offered beginning in September. (see below for details.) Just one look at the Calendar for the fourth quarter of the church with the Trips, Yard Sale, Events, Activities, Celebrations, Holidays, Campaigns, worship services, Advent, Christmas and Charge Conference on the horizon, I feel a combination of excitement and anxiety! Why do we do this to ourselves? Where is the verse Be Still and Know that I am God present in our lives during the last quarter of the year? Our slogan during this season should be, act fast, sign up today, come regularly, engage, practice, prioritize and get ready for the SPRINT..but this is not always good. My hope for you and for me is that we can engage often, prioritizing Christ s fellowship and our spiritual growth over the activities of the world, but also find Peace and Joy in the day to day. My challenge to you, even in this busy time of year, is to find places and spaces where you can pause to know that God is God. My hope is that you will find a routine of regular Devotion in daily Life. What Devotional or spiritual Practices do you have in place during this busy season? Do you read the Upper Room, Disciplines, The Daily Bread etc. What books are you reading that feed your spirit and draw you closer to God?

2 From the Pastor, continued My hope is that each of us will invest in means of grace that bring life-giving fellowship to help us grow in mind, body and spirit. Are you involved in small group fellowship? Sunday School Class, Bible Study, Covenant Group, Support Group, Church Groups like Forever Young or UMM/UMW that bring you joy and fellowship with trusted friends and good company in Christian love? My hope is that each of us will remember to seek out and engage in places of service that put feet on our love for neighbor! Do you have places where you serve others in love? Service helps US to grow in faith There are so many ministry areas at church where you can make a difference for others and yourself. Visitation to Shut Ins/ Children s and Youth Ministries/ Visitation to those who are grieving or hurting/ Volunteer at the Food Project/ Volunteer at the Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Animal Shelter or Schools? Or what about the Prison Ministry/ Feeding the Homeless/ Bethel Warming Shelter (RH)/ Salvation Army or Urban Ministries in Charlotte? We can t do it all ~ so we have to choose wisely how much we do and at what pace we do it while remembering to make room for stillness. I thank you for all the support you give to your church through your time, talents, financial gifts, witness and your service. Without you, First United Methodist Church would not be the serving and welcoming ministry it is. It takes all of the above to function as a witness in Clover and beyond. It is indeed an exciting time to be a part of FUMC, and I look forward to engaging richly in the life of the church as we end the 2018 year together. Remember as we move forward ~ our priorities are GOD and Family, and then everything else. Joy and Peace ~ Rev. Tommy Wilkes P.S. We are offering a few small group opportunities beginning in September. Rev. Meg Wilkes will offer a study on the Enneagram beginning on Wednesday nights at 6:30 in the Wesley classroom, from September 26 October17. Rev. Tommy Wilkes will be leading a short-term Bible study, Invitation to the New Testament that will run for 8 weeks on Monday nights, beginning September 24 th at 6:30pm. We also have a Church Connect Class beginning September the 16 9:50am each Sunday for 6 weeks in room 113 for those who are new to the church or who are wanting a refresher course in Church and Faith Practices! Sign up for any of these classes on the table beside the Elevator or through Mrs. Shirley at sdavis@cloverfumc.com.

3 Did you know the Trustees have updated our soap and towel dispensers in the church? The soap now is a foam that saves money and works better. Those dispensers were free for this. The towel dispensers also are more efficient and should save money on waste. We did add anti bacterial dispensers to the church as the cold/flu season approaches. Thanks, Trustees. Did you know we had a large portion of the roof at the church replaced? This has been a priority for the Trustees for some years as we needed to replace the flat roof that was leaking. This, of course, was a capital expense that we could not absorb with the general budget, so we borrowed against the debt, but got a wonderful rate and kept the payment the same. Note, we have good support financially to the debt relief of the church and should be able to pay this off with no problem. We also borrowed to replace our last OLD air conditioning unit for the Sanctuary. Did you know we have 29 going to the beach with our Forever Young Group? Did you know we will hold our Planning Day on September 23rd local off-campus location to be determined and announced. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS to contribute to this important planning time for the ministries of YOUR First United Methodist Church. 2:30-6:30pm. Financial Update Although we spend the majority of our money as a church in the first half of the year, we do need to be aware we are presently behind in our Income to Expenditure. Please, folks, let s TITHE!! I believe each of you will diligently consider where you are financially in your giving, and do all that you can to remember the ministry of your congregation through your tithes and offerings. If we all tithe regularly, we will not struggle to do the ministries God lays before us. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity in making FUMC, Clover the church it is. Financial Status as of the end of July 2018 Financial Update Needed to meet General Fund Budget as of 7/31/18 $ 367,084 Actual General Fund Spending as of 7/31/18 $ 343,043 Received for General Fund as of 7/31/18 $ 321,343 For a full budget feel free to view this, located in the folders outside of the workroom on the first floor next to the minutes of each administrative council meeting. Please view and return to the box. We ask that you do not take the copy there, but view and replace. Thank You

4 AN INRODUCTION TO THE ENNEAGRAM September 26 - October 17 In 2017 The Festival of Wisdom and Grace at Lake Junaluska introduced our church to a profound personality typography tool called The Enneagram (pronounced ANY-a-gram). More than a typical personality type indicator (such as Myers-Briggs or the more recent Color Personality Test) The Enneagram is an instrument of study that gets right at the core of our hearts and souls, challenging us to go deeper in our Christian growth and faith. John Wesley might call it a means of grace for Spiritual formation. Using The Enneagram, we can rediscover the miracle of our complex humanity and glorify God by learning how to reach our own fullest potential in the Imago Dei (Image of God) and better love our neighbors. (Family, Friends and Strangers alike.) Paul told early church folks to work out [their] own salvation with fear and trembling. (Philippians 2:12) Jesus says.. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. (Luke 10:27) Isaiah teaches us, Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord. (Isaiah 1:18) The Enneagram is an empowering tool for working out our own salvation (with fear and trembling!) by showing us how to take a hard and honest look at ourselves, to recognize our growing edges, acknowledge the better angels of our nature, and help us to discover how we are either stagnating or becoming our best selves in Christ.. heart, soul, strength and mind. As we study our own human nature, we are using God s gift of reason and loving God with our minds. An Introduction to The Enneagram will begin on September 26 th, right after the Wonderful Wednesday Meal in the Wesley Sunday School classroom from 6:30 until 7:30 and run for 4 weeks through October 17th. If you are interested, please let Rev. Meg Wilkes know or mwilkes@cloverfumc.com. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, BUT THIS IS A BAD TIME SLOT FOR YOU PLEASE CONTACT ME. I AM WILLING TO CREATE A 4 WEEK CLASS SESSION ON A DIFFERENT DAY AND TIME TO SUIT THE MOST PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEARN. We will take the RHETI (Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator) as a part of our time together. For more information about The Enneagram, visit on line The Center for Action and Contemplation with Father Richard Rohr. and The Enneagram Institute
