1 First United Methodist Church Clover, SC August 2017 From the Pastor Over the past six weeks at Church, we have slowly travelled through the words of the 23 rd Psalm during Worship. What a joy it has been for me to take time to study, preach and draw strength from the timeless truths of these words from Psalm 23 and God s Word for today s time. I want to thank all of you who have been supportive with your attendance and your comments both in person, by text and through during this series. As I have told so many of you, this was my first time moving through the 23rd Psalm as a Sermon Series, and now I am sure it will not be my last. Mission: We, the congregation, in humble and selfless service to God, will go forth joyfully, empowered and enabled by the Holy Spirit, to seek out, welcome, accept, and nurture persons to become faithful and effective disciples for Jesus Christ. My hope is that you were able to hear again the powerful image of God as our Good Shepherd who Supplies our Every Need, the beauty of His Provisions and Care, the Challenge God has for us to become Ministers of Reconciliation, the Gift God has given us of His Presence in Dark Places and the Joy He brings to us by Filling us with His Overflowing Grace and Salvation. I also hope you were able to hear again the clear connection between King David s Shepherd Song and the Good Shepherd Jesus. I am convinced more than ever that our Savior, born from the line of King David intentionally drew from the metaphor of the Good Shepherd to share His very nature and make the connection of God s abiding presence with us throughout the generations. Joy and Peace~ Rev. Tommy Wilkes *A few resources used for this Study: The Lord is My Shepherd, Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm by Rabbi Harold S. Kushner; Velvet Elvis, Rob Bell (awesome book, just finished it); William Barkley s Commentary on Psalms; New Interpreter s Bible Commentary on the Psalms, Dr. James Fleming, director of Biblical Resources Study Center (BRSC), Archeologist, Speaker and Lecturer. Teaching and Notes from his Lecture on the Good Shepherd/ note: these lectures are fascinating, informative and presented at Lake Junaluska yearly.

3 Friends, as Christians who are involved in the life of this wonderful church, we have the awesome honor and important responsibility of keeping in touch with our high school graduates as they go on to higher education and /or their vocational lives in locations beyond home or even nearby! The goal of this outreach is a Jesus kind of goal ~ to remember one another, to remind our graduates that we love them and are here for them as they continue to grow into young adulthood. Do you have a student in your household who has graduated this past year and is moving on to college or entering young adult life beyond high school? Or a student who is already sponsored but has changed locations/addresses? PLEASE LET US MINISTER SUPPORT TO THIS YOUNG PERSON! GIVE US THEIR ADDRESS and PHONE CONTACT INFO!! We will assign a sponsor and stay connected with them. CALL Rev. Meg ext 17. Would you like to be a sponsor for someone young who deserves a good word and kind support from their church family? CALL Rev. Meg ext 17. We will connect you with a young person ~ just to send some s and a care package or two through the year. More info to come... BUT PLEASE RESPOND NOW! Clover Salkehatchie Update Clover Salkehatchie had another successful year thanks to each of you. Your prayers, support, donations were appreciated. Two families were helped-one has water now after being without it for three years and the other family asked for screens for their windows but received almost a total house remodel. God is good, all the time! Twenty-nine campers and two families were blessed because of you. Thank you again for being a caring mission church. Blessings, Evelyn Cameron
