Tail-Less Tiger By Ken Smith The snow is melting the snow is melting!! Was the Winter this year about 12 months long or is it just that I need really bad to get behind the wheel and CRRRUISSSSE? If it wasn t for listening to the sound track that was made of my tri -power opening all 6 jets, I would probably not be worth being around anyone. Okay, let me rephrase that! Because I know all my friends are saying whadda ya mean PROBABLY? or When were ever? I can t wait! The first cruise of the Spring is to me what opening presents on Christmas morning is to every kid! There is something special about the sound of a full charged battery giving everything that it has to crank over the beast under your hood. And then the aroma of the exhaust within your garage that brings a tear to your eye or is it just God s way of saying you re an idiot for not pulling out of the enclosed area as soon as you can? Whatever it doesn t matter! Bring on the warmth bring on the street bring on the cops! It is official since I haven t been able to find another consulting gig I decided to take an early retirement and BECOME A BURDEN ON SOCIETY! So all of you that still have jobs, continue to pay your F.I.C.A. tax, so I can continue to see a deposit in my bank account on a monthly basis. And Thank You for your support. Well, now that I am done waxing eloquently, let me see what in store for the month of March. Hmm, well I m drawing a blank. There are no car shows that occur in the Chicagoland area during March and cruise nights don t begin until mid to late May. So I guess I ll talk about the BOPC Swap Meet from last month. The Kane County Fairgrounds facilities were much nicer than the DuPage County Fairgrounds arena (that held this swap meet for numerous years before) until the was a total blackout. Apparently a transformer adjacent to the fairgrounds blew up, so we had to wait for parts. Now I personally didn t recognize what happened, because I ve spent most of my life in the dark. But a couple of other club member that were at our table asked what was going on and when was it going to get fixed. I guess my biggest disappointment was that we couldn t show our burnout videos for about three hours to passersby. However, we were able to add another 6 new club members (even in the dark). Not too shabby! The current weather forecast for our monthly club meeting at Mr. Beef & Pizza at 4 PM on Saturday March 19th at 1796 South Elmhurst Road in Mt. Prospect is cloudy and 51 degrees. The rain between now and then should get all the salt off the streets, so I ll probably dust off my 64 and we ll see you down the road! This Month s Cover By Paul Weinstein Board of Directors Chairman Randy Ray not only sent Paul Weinstein photos of his two goats, but added a background of each car. The photo of his 67 is on the cover and photos of the 65 (& the story) is on page 12 of this issue. Thanks goes to Randy & Paul for doing all the work in getting these two beauties in this month s Tiger News. If you would like to get your car(s) on the cover of Rolling Stone er Tiger News; send Paul the photos and a short article and you ll become famous. After all, there are 291 families that get this newsletter, besides all of our club sponsors and other car clubs. Make others envy you! (Or at least your car.)
Presidents Page - Jim Stern March, 2011 Got Magic? A few months ago someone said your club growth during these tough economic times must be magic. Just the other day I heard the same thing implied albeit through different words. Those making these statements were not members of our club. It was then that it hit me; our members know what we ve got and they know there is nothing magical about it! At the core of it all - we have fun together, strive to always place the clubs interest ahead of individual self interest and we care. I have witnessed several instances where members dropped everything to rush to aid a fellow member. If you are reading these words you are likely already a Cruisin Tiger. If so, be proud of your club. If you aren't a member, join us now! Guidelines Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines -Robert Schuller Recently a member suggested that I layout some member conduct guidelines, not a fancy code of conduct, just a few simple things to be aware of - here goes! First, our goal must be to offend no one ever (knowing we occasionally will should not stop us from trying). At the root of it all is the need to be aware of, and sensitive too, the feelings of others, respect their turf if you will. Guard against crossing into another s area of responsibility or authority and avoid situations which have the remotest chance of leaving the perception of self gratification, betterment or enhancement. Don t use off-color language and/or tell offensive jokes. The explosion of Social Networking has introduced new ways to communicate and with that new ways to offend. Please be careful. February 19th Were you there? Talk about a busy day; our Board of Directors met 2:00-2:30pm, the Uprising Car Show Committee met 2:30-4:00pm and our first of the year club meeting ran from 4:00-6:00pm! Our meeting theme was Look Both Ways. Members were asked to look back and tell us what they did over the winter months and look forward to what their plans are for A club status report did the same thing, we brought everyone up to speed on what has transpired since we were last assembled and our future plans (see the meeting minutes for further details). BOPC Swap Meet We were there! This year the annual Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac & Cadillac swap meet was held a month earlier than normal and at a new location. The Kane County Fairgrounds proved to be an excellent facility. Two exhibit arena s are connected by a wide center hall which provides plenty of space for club displays, a food vendor and tables & chairs. Attendance appeared to be good and, if memory serves, we signed up 5 new members. ATTEND MEETINGS, JOIN COMMITTEES - IT S MORE FUN WHEN YOU RE INVOLVED! 6 February Meeting Minutes By Mike Brandt Club President Jim Stern (CT#375) called the club s monthly meeting to order at 4:12 PM on February 19th. There was one GTO (a white 64 post) in the parking lot owned by Tom Woods (CT #423). Jim asked if all attending members could hear him speak, and if there were any new or returning members in the audience. Rich Kroon (CT # 876) stated he had three Le Mans (a blue 69 coupe, a blue 70 convertible & he didn t mention the third). Bruce Browere (CT #861) has a 73, a 74, and a 79 Trans Am. Gary Foster (CT #869) has a dark red 64 GTO convertible with a 389/TriPower & a 4-Speed. Jack Roberts (CT#885) has a 76 Mercedes 450 SL. Jim then thanked Bill Nawrot (CT#474) and Sylvia Heidlauf (CT#125) for their loyal service to the club as First Vice-President and Secretary, respectively. He also welcomed Rick Bogoff (CT#514) as new First Vice-President and Mike Brandt (CT#544) as the new club Secretary. He then introduced John Campbell (CT#16), club Treasurer. The club is looking for a volunteer to take over the collection of our 50/50 drawing, as Rick Bogoff has been doing this for the last seven years, and must now occupy the front table for his duties as First VP. Randy Pribyl (CT#760) will run the 50/50 for today, but because he lives in Iowa and can t attend our meetings regularly, we need a person who will be attending a majority, if not all, our monthly meetings. Please consider helping out with this fun part of our meetings. It s also a good way to get to know your fellow club members as they give you their money for a chance to get some decent cash for a small investment. As of the beginning of today s meeting, there is $ in the pot for the You have to be here to win cash giveaway. Jim explained to the new members how this pot accumulates and how it can be won. Tiger News Editor and Membership coordinator Ken Smith (CT#500) is also looking to step aside as Editor and take a breather. He has been doing this job since September 2006, and is willing to nurture anyone who would like to take on this very important position for the club. He also stated that he needs some content from the membership to print in the Tiger News. Any car stories or experiences that you would like to share with the club would be appreciated. The BOPC Swap Meet is this Sunday, Feb. 27 th, at the Kane County Fairgrounds (new location) in St. Charles, IL on Randall Rd. We will be setting up a club display table and need some volunteers to man the ship. As in the past, we will be showing videos of burnouts done by some of our club members and their rides, and trying to sign up new members to our club. Charles Singer (CT#762) is working on creating a new website for our club. He said it is about 80% complete. When the site is done we will be able to register new members and renew current memberships through Pay-pal. We should also have an on-line store to purchase club items such as shirts, hats, etc. The classified section will have the capability of posting up to 10 pictures of your items for sale. Charity contributions will also be able to be made on the website. John Campbell s treasurers report shows that we are still well into the black. Our membership count stands at 285, which is a high-water mark for our club so far. We have members in 15 states (AZ, CA, IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NV, OH, TN, TX & WI). Ken Smith said the Tiger News went in the mail on Thursday, Feb. 17 th. The electronic version was sent out the same day. Only a few members said they hadn t received their Tiger News yet. Ken brought the 2011 club roster issues to the meeting and asked anyone who was present to claim theirs. Any remaining issues would be mailed out on Monday. Ken also passed around a hardcover book that he received for Christmas from his kids titled Pontiac Classics. It contained many pictures, ads, and product info. The book is for sale at Borders. Tom Wood brought some bottles of ZDDP oil additive to sell: 3 for $25 or 6 for $40. This is a vital additive for our older engines (which is not in the newer oils that are sold today). Rob Lozins (CT#218) will once again handle the sale of our Uprising Show license plates. The price for these limited use special plates will remain the same as last year ($40.00). However, any amount over the base $40 will go towards our charity donation and would be greatly appreciated. Members who purchased plates last year will
February Meeting Minutes (cont.) By Mike Brandt have the opportunity to get the same number this year if they send the information required by a certain date to be determined later. Rob will give us plenty of advance notice. As we did last year, there will be one set of plates with the letters GTO on them that will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Last year s winning bid was $1600. The bidding for this set of plates will start at $500. Rick Last (CT#271), our Indian Uprising Chairman, gave a brief report on the progress of our upcoming summer extravaganza on Sat. Aug. 6 th and Sun. Aug. 7 th, Again, we are looking for some volunteers to help out in the area of designing the Uprising Show flier for next year. Paul Weinstein (CT#558) has been doing this job for a number of years and sadly said that this would be his last year. He has done a great job and we all appreciate what he has done for the club. We have our first $500 sponsor for the Uprising. Ken Arendt (CT#575) is in charge of our main sponsors for the show. There will be no drag racing this year. The Dyno will be back, but we need to move him closer to the main part of the show field to attract more interest and participation. We are trying to book the same band as last year for the parking lot party. Jim talked about what charity means to our club. The Indian Uprising is our main source of obtaining charitable donations. United Cerebral Palsy has been our main charity for the last few years and will continue this year. Also, this year we add another well deserving charity to our cause, Friends for Therapeutic Equine Activities, a 501 C3 charity, which helps kids with physical and mental disabilities. The facility has about 110 riders and is located in Winfield, IL. There is a staff of four to take care of the horses and they are in need of some helmets for the riders. Treasurer John Campbell presented Jack Roberts of FTEA a check for $1,000 to help defray some of their expenses. Members in Publication recently have featured Rick Bogoff in the Jan Legend and Randy Pribyl in the Feb Legend. Our 2010 Indian Uprising also had a four page spread with pictures, in a recent issue of Smoke Signals. The Cruisin Tigers also received a plaque for best club display at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals last November, at the Donald E. Stephen s Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. In Dec. 2010, our club was contacted by well-known Pontiac collector and enthusiast Tim Dye to tour the site of his soon-to-be open Pontiac Museum in Pontiac, IL. Jim Stern and four other club members went down to Pontiac and got the grand tour of the museum site and the town in a trolley. We are the first club to see the plans for this new museum and were asked if we wanted to be involved in the dedication on July 23, We are going to arrange a caravan of Pontiacs to go down to Pontiac, IL for the dedication. Stay tuned for further details as they become available. And now on to our GTOAA news our membership has recently grown 25%. Filling out our GTOAA Chapter Survey, revealed that our membership percentage in the GTOAA has dropped to 36.5%. We would not fudge the books to make it look like we had the required percentage to remain an affiliated chapter, so we were told that as of Mar. 15 th, 2011 we would no longer be an affiliated chapter or associate club of the GTOAA. In light of this, we re-opened a dialog with POCI, which they had initiated earlier, about becoming a non-regional specialty chapter of their organization. After all the t s were crossed and the i s were dotted, Wayne Beran, one of the Upper Midwest Regional Directors of the POCI, announced at this meeting that we were officially accepted as a Specialty Chapter of The Pontiac Oakland Club International. We will encourage membership in POCI, but will not demand it. It will be up to POCI to recruit our members into their organization. Next month, at our March meeting, our special speakers will be POCI President, Dave Bennett (CT#835), yes you read that right, he is a Cruisin Tiger; POCI Convention Coordinator, Art Barrett; and Tim Dye, owner and curator of the soon to be opened Pontiac Museum in Pontiac, IL. See you all next month, and don t forget that March is membership renewal time and April is our Club s 22 nd anniversary celebration. The meeting adjourned at 5:39 PM
Seat Clips By Clay Novak February 19 Board of Directors Meeting By Mike Brandt A brief meeting of the club s Board of Directors was held before the regular monthly club meeting. In attendance were: Jim Stern, Rick Last, Randy Ray, Paul Weinstein, Steve Lucas, Bill & Patti Nawrot, Rick Bogoff, Ken Smith, Mark Grimmenga & Mike Brandt. Some of the issues to be discussed were : the acceptance of the minutes of the January Board of Directors meeting and modifications to the by-laws. It was voted to accept both. Jim Stern stated that he wants the club Secretary to retain all the club s records: charters, passwords, backup copy of the membership database, meeting minutes, attendance sheets, treasurer s reports and any other pertinent information regarding the club. Regarding major sponsors for the Indian Uprising, it was discussed that we should not guarantee that a competing vendor be excluded from advertising or having a display at the show, since competing sponsors are commonplace at many other shows or events. We can use all the income available. Besides, competition is a good thing. We also need to explore every avenue that is available to us to advertise the Indian Uprising. A vote was taken to submit to Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI) to be their non-regional specialty chapter. The vote was unanimous in favor of this direction. POCI is not forfeiting their desire to have 100% of our membership in POCI, but it was agreed that this responsibility will be theirs. We presently have 77 club members that are members of POCI and we expect this number to increase once our membership has had an opportunity to see their monthly magazine (Smoke Signals) and get to see POCI s passion for all models of the Pontiac. Chairman Randy Ray asked when would this information be made public to our membership and all agreed that the announcement would be made at the general monthly club meeting that followed this BOD meeting. This meeting concluded at 2:24 PM. Web Browsing By Ken Smith Whenever a club member sends me web addresses that are relevant to our hobby (or just plain funny), I will place them in this column. If on the other hand, I don t get any this column will disappear for that month. This has to be one of the neatest web sites whether you have gasoline in your veins or not. This is a web-site featuring the original factory brochures for nearly every American car you have ever owned. Pick the manufacturer, the year and the model. Enjoy! (from Denny Vodvarka) : If you are looking for interesting things to do with your car this year take a look at MIS (Michigan International Speedway) Onsted Show Car Nationals on July 15/16. We have attended this show in the past and have had a great time. The HIGHLIGHT of the show is (if the weather is good) to cruise the HIGH BANKS after the show. (from Roger MacZura): This is great - an electric Datsun at the dragstrip! Watch this - it's worth it! This makes you wonder what they have been doing in Detroit for last ten years! If a little guy in a home garage can make this, what are all the big car makers doing in all their giant labs? What have all the Detroit automakers been doing? (from Denny Vodvarka)

You Left Your Lights On By Bob Cella Most of our old cars do not have a warning alarm if the lights are left on when leaving the vehicle. We once had a 1969 Firebird that was used by my wife. On two occasions the car would not start because the lights had been left on inadvertently. It only took a simple jump start but is was embarrassing and inconvenient. I took the installation of a stealth alarm as a challenge! Most household door buzzers operate on 12 volts. I mounted one in a hidden area behind a headlight and connected one lead to the headlight wiring harness. Several circuits in cars use a switched ground instead of a switched hot lead. The dome/courtesy circuit is one of them. When a door is opened its switch is closed, completing the ground to energize the lamp. I wired the other lead of the buzzer to the driver s door switch. The buzzer would engage only when the lights were on and the driver s door was open. Whether you choose a buzzer or a bell the simple circuit works flawlessly. It is easy to install, inexpensive and if done with thought... out of sight. Try it! If It Has Wheels Club presents: 10 th Annual Car Show! 14 Randy s Rides By Randy Ray 1967 GTO: Lynn and I went to our first Nationals with our first '68 GTO in 1991 at Louisville, there we met the Zeivel Family and Dennis and Marla Parus. Returning, Lynn mentioned that she really liked the cars with the up and down headlights and we ought to get one. Seeing opportunity, I gave her a Hemmings and told her to look for some. She found some that were pricey or too far away, then she found a listing for a small dealer in Gallatin, TN advertising a rust free '67. That's about 15 miles north of my aunt and uncle's home, so we planned a quick trip down there to check it out and say hi to the relatives. There we found exactly what the ad said, a moderately sun baked Arizona '67 Signet Gold GTO with a 4 speed, black interior and black vinyl top. I didn't know much then, but in looking at the car, I noted it had 614 Ram Air IV heads on it. I said, if it s gonna have wrong heads, those are the heads to have! It was built at Fremont, the 3rd week of September, 1966, and I can say that early model year cars do have parts from the previous year. Since then it has been painted, with a new top, carpet, headliner and dash pad. The seats and door panels are still the originals, and the engine is still sporting the RAIV heads and exhaust manifolds. I believe it was drag raced a little in the '70s based on some of the repair information that came with it. It was indeed rust free since not a single bolt broke while disassembling and when wire brushing the bottom of the car, you'd get a cloud of dust and then see the original black floor pans GTO: My friend Larry Wyzukovicz let me buy his car. You all have heard Larry's name in the various founding of the club stories. Larry, with Dennis Parus, Jim Zeivel, Ric Murphy, Terry Weiner and Jim Harris founded the club in I joined in 1990 and met Larry after I became active in the club during the run up to the 1992 Nationals. Larry and I hit it off while we planned the McClassic Car Shows as well as the Uprisings of the mid-90's. Unfortunately, Larry contracted cancer which ultimately took him. Before this I used to tell him how I always liked the '65 after being impressed by a '65 back in high school. This progressed of course to, "if you need to sell, let me know". Well, I did get that call and bought the car in July, The car is a California built car that is rust free, but has been through a lot. Larry said it had a bad black paint job when he got it and was beat pretty hard. It started life as a white, 3 speed car, with a red interior. If anyone has seen mid-60s Chevies, this must have been a required color combination anywhere it was sunny out. Now, it s a lacquer paint custom burgundy color, with black interior, tri-power and a 4 speed. It is the original engine. It was done when I got it from Larry, since then we've re-shot the engine bay, radiator support, dashboard, rebuilt the carbs and are now due to replace the second set of headers (that's why people choose exhaust manifolds). Please enjoy this picture of Larry with his car from 1993.
