3 President s message In Sorrow and Joy Dear Temple Family, I write this message in December, during the time that my family and I are grieving the passing of my dear Uncle Carl, my mother s beloved brother. I thank you for your support and condolences; and I kindly ask your patience and understanding if there are some congregational and individual matters that do not receive prompt attention. On a most bright note (with pun intended), we held a fabulous Chanukah and musical Shabbat service on December 15th to honor Dr. Alan Gold, our Music Director extraordinaire! I offer many thanks to all who contributed to the service. I wish in this message to thank PFTY and all our students and families for the lovely inspirations, and Rachel Alemany, Michael Duffy, Rabbi Josh and the talents of our choir for the beauty of the service, enhanced by Alan s very own melodies; Rhoda Kaminstein for her presidential reminiscences and presentation; and Janie Pellish for writing and showcasing the choir s song to Alan, [We] Really Like Him. Thank you also to Rachel and Jason Alemamy, Robyn Rosen, Edie Mulligan and Alba Passerini for providing our fabulous chicken and latke dinner and decorations. I also offer my appreciation again to PFTY for supporting the great need in our community with the Chanukah Crib and Holiday Gift drive. And, special thanks also to Diane Koch and Dave Wallace for their tremendous assistance! Thank you to all in this community for your generous donations! All these efforts are truly labors of love for our congregation. I know that many in our temple family are experiencing personal and health difficulties and are reeling from loss, too. I offer my heartfelt condolences and support. While we are blessed to be a congregation who is there for one another in times of sorrow and joy, we are also a congregation as a whole experiencing a period of transition, again, in anticipation of the search for a new Cantor-Educator, and the sadness of saying goodbye to our Religious Education Director, Esther Benari-Altmann. I know as we move toward the direction of a new, but unknown, clergy member, we are experiencing uncertainty and angst, but also a sense of anticipation and excitement. As I discussed at the Congregational meeting, our leaders hold close the reactions and feelings of this experience with you. In terms of the Cantor-Educator search, we have a diverse committee working hard, representative of parents, students, educators, musicians, and involved members, well led by the Chair, Ellen Weiden. As I learn about candidates and visits to our temple, I promise to keep you updated. And, as we anticipate saying goodbye to Esther, please know that in the coming months, our leadership and congregation will honor her educational talents and love of this temple community and dear friendship, in a manner most befitting of Esther. We are a growing congregation with growing needs. As we look ahead, we are eager to complement our temple offerings with a Cantor-Educator to best meet the needs of our children and all in our congregation. As we engage this vision, I urge that we continue our meaningful discussions with open minds and hearts. On behalf of all in leadership, as always, if you should have any further questions, concerns or comments to share, kindly contact me or any member of our Management Team. In warmth, and light, I wish you and your families a joyous, healthy and peaceful 2018., Debora Cole-Duffy, Temple President Our Supplemental Dues Match We MET the 10K; Now on OUR WAY to 15K! It is my great delight to announce that we have met the 2017, $10K Supplemental Dues Match! As you know, our anonymous congregational family pledged to match $10,000, and as it is now met, dollar per dollar the family will continue to match congregational donations of Supplemental Dues, up to $15, 000. Indeed, with your great contributions, we reached the first leg, and now we are on to the $15K! If everyone in our congregation makes a $35.00 tax deductible donation, we will easily reach the $15K plateau, and realize a total donation income of $30,000. We can do this! On behalf of Temple leadership, I wholeheartedly thank this congregational family for generously offering the Match, and ALL in our congregation who made great and heartfelt gifts (sometimes more than one) to meet it. With this generosity in mind, I kindly ask for your continued support. I offer my most sincere gratitude to one and ALL! Deb Cole-Duffy, President Temple Anshe Amunim ~ January/February, 2018 ~ 3

7 Chanukah 2017 On the Horizon Although the temperatures are in the single digit numbers and there is snow on the ground and frost on the windows remember spring and summer are not far off! Plans are in the works for what will be an interesting and unique variety of programs. We will investigate the mysteries of finding your personal past with our genealogy specialist Keren Weiner. A Lunch and Learn program highlighting one of America s outstanding women, Eleanor Roosevelt, will be the focus of a presentation by Dr. Robyn Rosen. In midsummer, Dr. Barbara Waldinger will continue with the Play Analysis classes. Rabbi Josh will once again be a featured part of our summer medley. We would be remiss if we did not mention the anticipated Feigenbaum Lecture scheduled for August 26. Mark your calendars. We guarantee several other surprises, but time will tell what they will be. We thank you for your participation and urge you to join us behind the scenes to assure that every event is a winner. We need your help. Stay warm and thank you.
