1 Congregation Or Atid Connections Connecting community with spirituality Elul Tishrei 5779 September 2018 The vision of this congregation shall be to establish and maintain an institution that creates an all-embracing egalitarian participatory Conservative synagogue that serves as a Jewish spiritual, cultural, and educational center for children, adults and families. The synagogue will foster Jewish identity and values, promote the observance of Jewish traditions and enhance the spiritual growth of our members; to create a comfortable social environment for our members; to involve the congregation in issues of Jewish concern and interest Website: oratid.org Office Hours: Tuesday - Friday: 9:00-4:00 Rabbi Rabbi Hal Schevitz Rabbihal@oratid.org Rabbi s Office Hours: Tuesday: 2:00-4:00 PM Thursday: 9:30-11:30 AM Education Coordinator Alison Litvin RelSchool@oratid.org Administrative Assistant Alison Litvin alitvin@oratid.org Synagogue Administrator Wanda Schweiger wschweiger@oratid.org President Rick Wiener Vice Presidents David Jaffe Lynn Landesman Amy Melnick-Scharf Treasurer: Tom McClish and Paul Cohen Secretary: Sandy Mayer Advisor: Jeffrey Samuels Gabbi: Fran Todras SERVICES Friday - 6:15 PM Services Saturday - 10:00 AM Services Torah Study 9:00 AM Saturday mornings From The Rabbi Cave - Page 2 President s Thoughts - Page 3 Ritualistically Speaking - Page 4 Lev Shalem Machzor Book - Page 4 Mitzvah Corp - Page 5 Book Club - Page 6 Care Committee Information - Page 6 Celebrations - Page 7 Pizza in the Hut Flyer - Page 7 High Holy Day Schedule - Page 8 Religious School - Page 9 & 10 Donations and Sponsors - Page 11 Donation Form - Page 12 Yahrzeits - Page 13 Candle Lighting Times - Page 13 Life Cycle Recognitions - Page 13 Ongoing Ways To Support - Page 14 Life & Legacy - Page 15 Join our family for the High Holidays September Upcoming Events Saturday, 1st: 7:30 PM Selichot Program and Service Sunday, 9th 6:30 PM Erev Rosh Hashanah Service Monday, 10th 9:00 AM Rosh Hashanah First Day Tuesday, 11th 9:00 AM Rosh Hashanah Second Day Sunday, 16th 3:00 PM Cemetery Visitation Tuesday, 18th 6:45 PM Kol Nidre Service Wednesday, 19th 9:00 AM Yom Kippur Services Sunday, 23rd Erev Sukkot (for Sukkah Hop information please see the flyer on page 4) Friday, 28th 6:15 PM Pizza in the Hut (see flyer on page 7) Sunday, 30th 5:00 PM Simchat Torah / School Celebration and dinner
2 From The Rabbi Cave... 2 As you can probably imagine, things are busy here at Congregation Or Atid. Tis the season of High Holy Day preparation, back-to-school planning, and programming events for the year ahead. Inside this month s connections you will find the information for High Holy Day services, Festival Services for Sukkot, and our third annual Sukkah Hop (hope to see you all there!), as well as all of our amazing school activities coming up in the first few weeks. While all this planning is happening, the gears in my brain have been turning and I have been clacking away on the keyboard at my computer, composing what I hope to be sermons that are moving, entertaining, and meaningful. My sermon topics for this year s services are as follows: Rosh Hashanah, Day 1 The (Face)Book of Life: The High Holy Days in the Age of Social Media Rosh Hashanah, Day 2 The Promise of Rebirth in our Rosh Hashanah Readings Kol Nidre/Erev Yom Kippur Israel and American Jews: How We Got Here and Where We Will Go Yom Kippur What We Remember and What We Take For Granted Also, the topic for my Yom Kippur study session (at 4:30pm, just before Minḥah) will be: God s Thirteen Attributes: What They Are and Why We Say Them. This year is full of potential, and I am looking forward to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur this year. I hope to see each and every one of you, and at the very least, shake your hand at the Bimah or during the Torah processions. May 5779 be a year of blessing, peace, and health upon you, Congregation Or Atid, the United States, and the World. Shanah Tovah!
3 President s Thoughts 3 Rick Wiener August was a busy month at Congregation Or Atid. We had three Shabbarbeques which were well attended, it was great to see so many congregants, and so many new faces. I want to thank the people who organized these events and the many helpers that they had. It is always great to see Or Atid s family at our events. Mazel tov to Leo Shoval on his Bar Mitzvah. He followed in his brother s footsteps in doing a great job. His family was very proud of him. Now, we are heading into September, which we all know brings in the High Holidays. As I am writing this article, I am also preparing my speech for Rosh Hashanah. Many people are busy getting everything ready for the holidays-----from the office, the Rabbi, the Hazzans, and all the volunteers that it takes to have the services run smoothly. Thank you! After the High Holidays, Sukkot begins. Besides having services, we have Pizza in the Hut, Sukkah Hops, Simchat Torah celebration with the school, and Shemini Atzeret/ Simchat Torah services honoring two congregants with Yizkor service to follow. As you see, August and September were and are busy times at Or Atid. I want to close my message with the following: If I have offended anyone in the past year, please forgive me. I am here to serve every congregant and to listen to your needs, as everyone is important in our congregational family. Shanah Tovah
