From The Rabbi Cave... 2 The High Holy Days are finally over. They concluded on Monday, October 1 st with our Sh mini Atzeret-Simchat Torah services, where we concluded the Torah by reading the end of book of Deuteronomy and began the Torah anew by reading the beginning of the book of Genesis. We danced with the Torah in circular processions (called Hakafot), sang songs, and unrolled an entire scroll on Sunday evening, September 30 th with the students of the Kornblau Religious School. While it is clearly a celebratory ritual, it is worth pausing to reflect on the deeper meaning behind Simchat Torah. The Torah is a book of constant becoming. Once we reach the end of years worth of reading, when we think we will reach the Promised Land, we go back to the beginning, starting again with the Creation of the World. There is both a sense of disappointment and the possibility of opportunity in the outcome that the Promise Land is never reached. In the Torah, all of the preparations are made: the spies explore it, God apportions it, and its political and religious institutions are established. However, in our calendrical reading, the final goal is never attained. The Israelites wandering through the wilderness are constantly in a world of becoming. They never really do reach that world of being. Whoever decided to truncate the Torah at the end of Deuteronomy made a bold and true claim about the human condition. We must continually reach and strive, because the goal we achieve only leads to something else. Just as we reach the comforts, confidences, and mastery of one stage of life, we being the next stage, with the same anxiousness and excitement with which we began the previous stage. Any of us could open up a Bible and turn from the final page of Deuteronomy and begin reading the book of Joshua, which begins to the tell the story of how the Israelites do in fact begin to settle the land. But as a ritual object, and the one which we read in a cycle, the Torah grounds us in a world where we are constantly wanting, constantly striving, and constantly moving towards where we want to be. Most of us experience these feelings of wanting and then maybe even finally having. We work for something for a certain period of time, and once we get it, we feel good about ourselves, and rightly so especially after working hard to achieve it. But then what? Without something new to look forward to, without something to work towards, who are we? What is our purpose? After achieving something, or maybe even before that final achievement occurs, we must acknowledge that we ll have to start over again soon, moving right back to creation. Creating a new world for ourselves; creating a new life; creating a new purpose; creating new ideals to which to aspire. There is a famous phrase: it s about the journey, not the destination. This is Torah. There is no physical destination reached in the Torah. It is all about the journey of our inner lives. But with Torah, as with life, we don t forget the lessons of our previous journey. When we move on to new things, and a new cycle of reading Torah, we remember the lessons learned and the knowledge gained from our previous engagement with Torah. As we move forward with a new Torah reading cycle and a New Year in 5779, let s talk about what we want to become and the year ahead. As I concluded my Yom Kippur sermon, let us remember the past and express our gratitude for it, celebrate the present and work to ensure our stability, and imagine the future as we provide for a prosperous tomorrow.

President s Thoughts 3 Rick Wiener My speech for Rosh Hashanah: Good morning, My name is Rick Wiener, president of Or Atid, and I'd like to welcome all of you and thank you for joining us here today. A few weeks ago, I woke up early (like, "still dark outside" early) and couldn't get back to sleep. I didn't want to wake Marilyn, so, I went downstairs, turned on the TV, and started flipping through the channels to see if anything was on. After what seemed like every channel was alternating between Chuck Norris' Total Gym infomercial or the Power AirFryer infomercial, I finally turned to the movie, "Hardball," starring Keanu Reeves. Now, for those unfamiliar with the movie, it's about a guy who likes to place bets on just about any sporting event, and after his last bet costs him more than he has, he is made an offer he can't refuse! To pay off his large gambling debt, he agrees to coach a Little League team from a tough Chicago neighborhood... because, how else would you pay off a gambling debt? In any case, over the course of the movie, he and the kids develop a bond, and his character eventually starts to turn over a new leaf, save a few bumps along the way. Now, there's a pivotal moment in the movie, which sets the tone for the climax of the movie. Don't worry, I will try not to give away any spoilers, but fast forward to the baseball field, where Keanu's character gives his team one final pep talk, telling them how he is just "blown away by their ability to show up." Now, even if you've never seen this movie, at one point or another, most of us have probably heard a similar sentiment about showing up. How many of us have heard the saying, "Showing up is half the battle?" Or maybe, "80% of success is showing up," credited to Woody Allen. In Judaism, we have a single word that is all about being present and showing up. It's a word that is only spoken a handful of times in the Torah (including portions that will be read over Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), but when the word is said, it's often a precursor to significant and defining moments throughout our past. That word is "Hineni," which means "Here I am." In the Torah, "Hineni" is first uttered by Abraham, in the Book of Genesis, during the portion known as "The Binding of Isaac." We'll read from that portion during Rosh Hashanah. But, Abraham didn't respond with "Hineni" as a way of telling G-d where he stood, physically. No, "Hineni" isn't intended to refer to one's physical location - it really means to be available, to be focused, and to be fully present with ourselves, with each other, and with G-d. To me, "Hineni" is our version of "showing up." Now, it wouldn't be a High Holiday speech if I didn't stand before you, asking for something, right? Or Atid is calling out to each and every one of us, and I'm asking for everyone, myself included, to respond more often to those calls with "Hineni"- here we are, ready, willing, and available to show up. So, I hope by now, you're saying to yourself, "Rick, I'm ready. I'll stop letting Or Atid's calls go to voic when I see Or Atid show up on caller id. I'll stop letting Or Atid's s sit unopened in my inbox. I'm ready to take the call and answer with 'Hineni!' Just tell me what is needed, and I'll be ready to show up!"

President s Thoughts continued... 4 Well, since you asked... Attend services - Look all around you, we've done a great job showing up today. But, we're Jews year round and not just during the High Holidays, so let's fill these seats on Fridays, Saturdays, and all of the other holidays. Volunteer - There is never a shortage of things to help out with, whether it's acting as a greeter during Shabbat services, offering to help set up for one of our special dinners or events (like the upcoming Pizza in the Hut, hint, hint, hint), helping to put up or take down our Sukkah, helping to clean up after a Saturday Kiddush, filling backpacks at FeedMore, I could go on and on... Attend functions - Shabbarbeques, our annual Sukkah Hop, the aforementioned Pizza in the Hut, adult education classes...there are activities year round to engage, schmooze, and reconnect (or perhaps connect for the first time) with one another. So, let's show up! Join a committee- Do you like working with numbers- join the Budget Committee. Maybe you enjoy helping to plan and organize events for our congregation- we have Membership Engagement committee that may be right up your alley. Or, maybe you have a flair for writing and communicating and would love to help spread Or Atid's message- the Marketing committee may be for you! We have committees for any interest, and most only meet once a month. Donate - Come on, would it really be a High Holiday speech if I didn't bring up donations? I won't belabor the point- you've heard it before. While sustaining shares allows us to offer a Jewish home to anyone, without finances being the reason someone doesn't join, sustaining shares alone are simply not enough to run Or Atid and cover salaries, utilities and maintenance of the building, and all of the other expenses that surely come up. In order to literally sustain our Or Atid home and enjoy all of the religious, spiritual, and social benefits Or Atid has to offer, we rely heavily on your generous donations throughout the year. So please, consider what you can and are willing to give. Or Atid offers limitless opportunities for everyone to show up and be present- the ways I mentioned don't even scratch the surface. My point is, let's do more to become fully engaged members, experiencing all that Or Atid has to offer. Everyone in this room has something valuable to contribute, so the next time that Or Atid calls (and believe me, there will be many, many calls!), I hope we can all respond with a resounding, "Hineni," offering our talents, abilities, time, and yes, money, in any way that we feel moved to do so, so that Or Atid's light shines brightly for years to come. I'd like to close by thanking Rabbi Hal, the Hazzanim, the Ritual Committee, the ushers, and all of our volunteers for everything you have done to prepare for this year's High Holidays. And, I'd like to extend a special thanks to Wanda, Alison, and Daniel for everything they do to keep Or Atid running smoothly, day in and day out. To all of you, please accept my heartfelt thanks and appreciation. I would also like to thank my wife and family for always backing me for my decisions, good or bad. And, to all our members and guests, I wish you all a sweet and healthy New Year. L'Shana Tovah.

5 Sandy Weiner Mitzvah Corps Merle Kahn Thank you to all who contributed to our Corners of Our Fields Program to benefit FeedMore pantry during this holiday season. Sandy Weiner Merle Kahn Ritualistically Speaking Barry Green Wrapping Up Our Year As the Rabbi can tell you, September was a very busy month. Maybe the High Holy days are really an attempt to wear us down so much that the world looks fresh and new to us when all is said and done. Once more we are indebted to the leaders of our services our Rabbi and his Hazzanim: Sheila Pour, Ron Fink, Mayer Grob, and Art Todras; and, Alison Litvin for leading the children s services. Torah and Haftorah readers, other than the Rabbi and Hazzanim, included Leo Shoval, Sam Rubin, Ellen Bernstein (who also cleaned all the Torah silver), Michael Kornstein, Fran Todras, Daniel Elmakis, and Sam Richardson. And our Gabbaim: Fran Todras and Rick Wiener (both of whom were also everywhere, doing everything). We also had three wonderful speakers: Lisa Roday, Hannah Auerbach and Rebekah Cohodas. Beyond these folks, I wanted to list all the members (and I include Wanda Schweiger in this group) who helped make everything work, including: setting up the sanctuary, ushering, putting together and printing the Yizkor books, blowing shofar, providing and bagging the apples and honey, assigning honors, and baking and serving our breakfast foods. The only problem is space. I counted at least 44 individuals who helped with all these tasks some involved in multiple tasks. And I m probably missing some names that should be included. To all these folks, we owe our thanks. I ve attended HH services at several other synagogues over the years and can honestly say that ours were the least pat and most meaningful that I ve been to. One last note the season ends with Sukkot and, lastly, Simchat Torah, as we finish reading the last book of the Torah (Deuteronomy) and begin again with the reading of the first portion of Genesis - helping us to bridge one year to the next. Also, we honored Fran Todras as Kallat Torah (Bride of the Torah), and Harry Kirshbaum as Hatan Torah (Bridegroom of the Torah) for their multiple roles in helping to keep our synagogue standing and operating, and our religious services meaningful. What they do for us would require more words than I m allowed in this article.

8 Helen and Sam Kornblau Religious School News Education Coordinator Alison Litvin Shalom Families! September was a busy, busy month for the Helen and Sam Kornblau Religious School! We had a very successful kickoff to the school year with our Back to School Open House, and we are all excited to see what the year brings. Then we launched right into Rosh Hashanah, where we celebrated the world s birthday with a musical youth service, and an apple and honey tasting event featuring 7 types of apples with 5 types of honey. During Yom Kippur, we all joined together for a watercolor Tashlikh ceremony, casting away our mistakes and regrets and watching them fade from the paper as the ink mixed with the water. To reach the water s edge, we all embarked on a meditative journey where we moved through the events of last year so we could look forward to a fresh, new start this year. We then celebrated Sukkot by making an edible sukkah out of pretzel sticks, graham crackers, and frosting. We made a s'chach, a roof, out of mint leaves and licorice, and we used dried fruits for decorations and to celebrate the harvest. For our first Tuesday workshop, we all put on our building caps and got to work creating miniature sukkahs, with wooden poles and leaves and branches for the schach. To demonstrate the temporary nature of the sukkah, we built our sukkah on wheels! Then, we put our sukkah to the test with the Great Sukkah Race, and we had winners in multiple categories ranging from Fastest Time, Most Durable, and Most Innovate Design. Thank you to all the parents who helped with some of our activities, we had a great time and your involvement was a part of that! During the High Holidays, Morah Jeanine and I led a High Holiday service and activity with the residents of Spring Arbor, a nearby assisted living home. Working together with their program coordinator, we sought to provide "something Jewish" for their Jewish residents. We saw the opportunity to connect our communities, and we had a wonderful time meeting the residents and sharing our stories. In preparation for this event, students in the 3rd-6th grade classes made Shana Tova greeting cards using postcards from Israel. We cut out letters from newspapers to spell out Shana Tova! and used puffy paint to accent the details on the pictures of Jerusalem, the Holy City. We delivered these cards to a group that was very happy to receive them, and we are all looking forward to future opportunities together. Special thanks goes to Marv & Ricki Curry for their donation towards our first picnic table for our outdoor classroom, and to Michael Mollen for his carpentry skills! We are very excited to create new learning opportunities for our students, and are looking forward to warm and sunny outdoor classes. We are still collecting donations for a second table, and for the rest of our outdoor space. We are in the process of curating a nature center, our own Garden of Eden where students can participate in planting, watching their plants grow, and harvesting. We will be able to grow our own fruits and vegetables, havdalah spices, and flowers for bouquets to gift and donate to our community. We have a few planters set up, with some fall seeds already in the ground, and we are accepting donations for the spring season. We are in need of dirt, seeds, and additional planters, and volunteers to help us build and maintain our garden. If you are able to help, please let me know. This year is about bringing our community together for a fun, meaningful, and memorable Jewish learning experience, and I can t wait to learn and grow together. If you have any questions or concerns, or want to share some of your own ideas, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. You can me at relschool@oratid.org, or call the office at Here s to a great year! CONTINUED ON PAGE 9.
