2 Page 2 Volume 260, Issue 190 A WORD TO THE WISE R ABBI J AY H. R O S E N B A U M PURIM MLK AMERICA Beware the Ides of March These famous and foreboding words resonate for the Jew in the month of March as we celebrate the holiday of Purim. For modern Jewry, this holiday has evolved into a joyous festival with noise makers, Purim Spiels, the exchange of gifts known as Shalach Manos, and that favorite of all pastries, Hamentashen. In fact, because of its carnival nature, the Talmud, the book of Jewish law, has designated Purim as the only holiday where one is to imbibe even to the extent of not being able to distinguish between Haman and Mordecai. But for the Jews of Persia, over 2600 years ago, Purim and the days preceding it were anything but a time for rejoicing. The word Purim means to cast lots, for lots were cast by Haman and the Royal Court of Ahasuerus to determine which day would be chosen to annihilate the Jews of the Persian Empire. It seems that Hitler was not the first with the idea to implement a FINAL SOLUTION. Through the profound courage of Queen Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her uncle Mordecai, who, because of her great beauty, was elevated to the throne as Ahasuerus wife, the Jews were saved and Haman, together with his fellow plotters and murderous throng, was killed. Now, how was it possible for the fate of Persian Jewry to have shifted 180 degrees? The answer is two-fold. First, it took the right person to intercede on behalf of our people: the heroin of our story, Queen Esther, also known as Hadassah. Second, it reveals that the King, his Court and subjects were not true anti- Semites that they did not hate the Jews, but rather did not understand who and what they were. Therefore, why would they not believe the lies told about our people by Haman who was motivated by personal greed, jealousy and an insatiable lust for power. I believe that much of the anti-semitism that we have encountered throughout history is the result of people not knowing us, these misguided souls, out of their own ignorance, believe the lies told to them by their religious and political leaders about Jews and Judaism. We are, as the Torah described us 3300 years ago, Am L Vadad Yishkon A Nation that dwells alone. Our numbers are few even in the most historic and cosmopolitan centers of Europe. For example, there are 15,000 Jews in Rome, 10,000 Jews in Berlin, 900 Jews in Florence and we number a mere 450 of the entire population of Venice and the surrounding islands. And let us not forget, in our world with our population approaching 8 billion, we Jews number a mere 14.1 million or 0.22% of the world population. Yes, it is easy to hate someone you don t know. It is not so easy to hate someone you do know and have come to understand, respect, appreciate and perhaps even love. It pains me to say that this year, as we approach the holiday of Purim, we have seen an unprecedented increase of anti-semitism right here at home which includes harassment and threats to Jews in the media, the desecration of a Jewish cemetery where 170 headstones were overturned in the outskirts of St. Louis and threats against Jewish organizations include the Anti-Defamation League. To date there have been 68 bomb threats made to 53 different Jewish Community Centers in 26 States and one in Canada. It seems that since the elections this past November, the genie of anti-semitism, racism and xenophobia has been let out of the bottle with a new-found license to spread his poison across the land and underwhelming and meager efforts have been brought to bear to coral him and put him back in the bottle where he belongs. So, what are we to do as members of the most empowered, successful and numerous Jewish community in the Diaspora? First, we must learn from our past and take to heart the lesson of Jewish survival learned from Purim. While we, too, are fortunate in our day to have our own beautiful Queen Esther, in the palace we call the White House, each of us must do our own part to fight the surge of anti-semitism.

3 Page 3 Volume 260, Issue 190 This entails strengthening our Jewish Neshamas - souls, through education, prayer, celebration and imparting our age-old values to our children and grandchildren. Second, let us not allow those impudent few who hide in the shadows, make us feel afraid. Remember, we are Gods eternal people and the longest running success story in the history of western civilization. Third, let us find unity in our diversity as Americans and as Jews, strengthen our relationships with one another and build coalitions for the sake of our own survival and that of our nation. Let us take to heart that it was the Muslim community that came to the aid of the Jewish community of St. Louis when their cemetery was desecrated. And, let us also remember that it was the great coalition of African Americans and Jews that had a profound affect in combatting the scourge of racism in America. It is this coalition and our heroes in the Jewish community and the African-American community that we will celebrate and remember at our Greater Long Island Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration on Friday evening, March 31 st in partnership with the American Jewish Committee. In this way, we together as people of different faiths and backgrounds will work together to make America even greater. Furthermore, our celebration of Purim on Sunday morning, March 12 th, reminds us of our need to work together and support one another as a Jewish community, whether it is fighting anti-semitism in America or abroad or uplifting our brothers and sisters who sacrifice and toil to secure and sanctify the State of Israel. Finally, Purim also bids us reach out to one another by removing the masks that we hide behind that separate us from each other and from ourselves, for through the mask it shouts, be an open and honest individual of integrity. And so, my dear friends, during these Ides of March, as we prepare for Purim in the spirit of Queen Esther and Mordecai, as a congregation, we will make a difference promoting the cause of Jewish survival, combating the evil forces of Haman like anti-semitism that still plague our world as we rejoice with all of God s children as one. 4 Page 4 V o l um e 2 6 0, I s s ue PRESIDENT S MESSAGE KENNETH A. SHAPIRO Just when we thought winter was almost ending, the ground hog told us otherwise and he was right, 6 more weeks of winter. The good thing about the month of March is that it is a transition month and it shows strong signs of the beautiful spring to come. We have many interesting and enjoyable events to look forward to this month as we welcome spring. Friday evening, March 3rd, is Shabbat Across America Family Shabbat Dinner and service. Our 4th grade students will be presented with their own prayer books and will help conduct our service. Please join us for this special celebration and feel free bring your family, neighbors and friends. Reservations are needed for the dinner, so please call the Temple office to book your reservation. Wednesday evening, March 8th, is our very successful "Wine and Dine" evening at which time we will Wine and Dine Tuscan Style at the Blue Moon Restaurant. This is a social event at a different restaurant each month to enjoy an evening together with Temple friends and guests. I can tell you it has become a very popular event. Sunday morning, March 12th, we will celebrate our annual Purim followed by our famous Purim Carnival. This is a fun day for the whole family and our students look forward to this event every single year. Most come in costumes and prizes are awarded. Thursday evening, March 23rd is the rescheduled Ladies Paint Night. It was originally scheduled for the 9th of February, but the big snow storm cancelled that. We had a large number of our congregants and their friends attending. It seems to be very popular with our ladies, so please don't miss it. There is still time to reserve your spot. On Friday evening, March 31st we will celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This has become a yearly event which we are proud of and invite the entire community to attend. Our students will read some of the words of Dr. King, our Choir will sing, and our Rabbi and guests will share inspiring words. The American Jewish Committee will be joining us for the celebration of Dr. King's life and legacy. Our Temple will sponsor a Gala oneg following services for all to enjoy. Please don't miss this. Please always think of your Temple and make whatever charitable donations you can to sustain your spiritual home. There are many worthwhile Temple Funds to choose from. Please call the office for information on the various funds. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Karen and I will be away during the first part of March on our yearly big trip. This year we are traveling to Thailand and Laos. We look forward to sharing our traveling experiences with you when we return in the middle of March. Kenneth A. Shapiro, President.

The evening was filled with joy and happiness. We are thankful for your support and admiration you show to our talented members. It means a great deal to us and we are looking forward to creating many more meaningful moments together. During the month of February our Hebrew High School students had their meetings at the Woodro Kosher Deli in Hewlett. The dinners were sponsored by the Sklar Family. One of our students Ben Simens, Vice President of Zion AZA, BBYO, and Janna Bickoff, high school senior and the Treasurer of our local chapter Sababa, shared their thoughts and experience at this organization. We are grateful for their commitment and dedication to Judaism and the importance of unity and building bridges among Jewish teens. March is the month filled with many celebrations and activities. Our Temple is hosting Shabbat Across America and our Purim Gala. These celebrations are very important to us and Jews around the world. They create opportunities to experience and reconnect with our rich tradition and people of our faith. I am looking forward to greeting you and celebrating with you all these special festivities.
