2 Page 2 Volume 264, Issue 194 A WORD TO THE WISE R ABBI J AY H. R O S E N B A U M JERUSALEM S 50 TH ANNIVERSARY AND 3000 TH ANNIVERSARY Wednesday, May 24 th corresponding to the Hebrew calendar IYAR 28, was a national holiday in Israel. This day, called in Hebrew, YOM YERUSHALAYIM Jerusalem Day, marked the 50 th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem, according to the secular calendar, on June 7, 1967 as a result of Israel s miraculous victory in the Six-Day War. In the words of Elie Wiesel published in The Forward originally in Yiddish on June 12, 1967 in his article entitled Israel s victory is all of ours, he wrote the following: Future generations will probably never believe it. Teachers will have a hard time convincing their students that what sounds legendary actually occurred. The children will naturally swallow each word, but later on, as adults, they ll nod their heads and smile, remarking that these were fantasies of history. They won t believe that this small state, surrounded by hatred, fire and murder, had so quickly managed a miracle. It will be hard to describe how, amid a sea of hatred, a tiny army drove off and humiliated several well-equipped military hordes of who knows how many Arab countries. In another 2,000 years, people will consider these events the way we think of descriptions of the Maccabees and their victories. Last Sunday, the Arabs and their allies were boastfully threatening Israel that if she dared to make another move, she d pay with her existence. And then between Passover and Shavuot, the Hanukkah miracle occurred. It didn t take long before the supposedly mighty enemy was rendered speechless and lost its nerve. Even the Soviet Ambassador to the UN, Nikolai Fedorenko, suddenly changed his tone. Instead of worrying about whether Nasser would finally curb his appetite for power, world leaders began looking for ways to make emends to Israeli Premier Levi Eshkol. We all need to recite the Hallel thanksgiving prayer for being granted the privilege of witnessing these events. The battle has not yet ended, but the enemy has already retreated and won t easily recover. Those who thought you could separate the Jewish state from the Jewish people around the world clearly underestimate us. Yes 50 years ago after being denied access to our holiest of holy sites in East Jerusalem and the surrounding area which the Jordanians captured in the War of Independence in 1948, World Jewry could once again pray at the Western Wall. Indeed, now people of all faiths, with Jerusalem once again united and the National Capital of the Jewish State and Spiritual Capital of World Jewry could return to their holy shrines again and pray openly and unafraid. Oh, how I remember the exuberance of those spring and summer days of 1967 as I walked the streets of the old city where my ancestors had walked 3000 years earlier making pilgrimage to the Holy Temple giving thanks to God Almighty. Though a half century is a drop in the bucket not only of World History, but also in the life of a nation and a region. As Elie Wiesel cautioned 50 years ago, let us not succumb to forgetfulness of mind and spirit and find our way back to the joy, pride, elation and thanksgiving to the almighty for the miracle we witnessed and lived those spring and summer days of How? To begin, instill within our children and ourselves, a sense of believing, belonging and behaving in a way that reflects our connection to Israel and Jerusalem. When others would speak out against Israel, let us stand up proud and speak up and on behalf of our Jewish State and our Spiritual Capital, Jerusalem which is and has been for 3000 years Judaism s only religious center and capital city. Next, let us send our young adults on Birthright and I will help you in this endeavor. Let them see that Israel is not a state in crisis, but rather the start-up state, the high-tech state, the fashion, commerce and innovation state, second to none in the world. Third, let us make plans to visit Israel. It pains me to say that while millions of Jews for the past 2000 years have prayed for Jerusalem, shed tears for Jerusalem, ended their Seders with the words next year in Jerusalem, too few have visited Jerusalem.
3 Page 3 Volume 264, Issue 194 It should be no surprise to see once you visit Israel that it is not simply a place one goes to on a religious pilgrimage, historic and archeological excursion or to connect with their Jewish heritage, but also a great vacation destination. Believe me when I tell you, the beaches in southern France, the Costa del Sol or the Amalfi Coast can t hold a candle to the beaches in Tel Aviv and Eilat. Finally, I ask you to participate with me in a letter-writing campaign to our Senators, I inaugurated in May on a pilgrimage to Israel where I led 50 of my colleagues from the United States to celebrate Israel s 69 th Anniversary and Jerusalem s 50 th Anniversary of Reunification. I affirm my wholehearted commitment to Israel s commitment to peace with security. I stand with all who insist that Jerusalem shall remain the Capital of the Jewish State. I urge others to join with me to defeat any effort to delegitimize Jewish sovereignty with calls for boycott, divestment and sanctions. Rabbi Rosenbaum in prayer, in preparation for Shabbat Services, placing the notes petitioning God that were written by our congregants in the Western Wall. Thank you, Mr. President One of the casualties of our fast-moving secular society is the lack of appreciation for the good works of others and our seeming selective forgetfulness to say thank you. For the past three years we have been fortunate and blessed by the selfless service of Kenny Shapiro as President of our Congregation. It has been a pleasure to work with Kenny these past three years and together build for the future of our Temple and Reform Judaism on the South Shore. In the main, Kenny is a modest individual who does that which is right and righteous, not out of any desire for accolades or recognition, but rather based on his moral compass and Jewish Neshama. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation also go out to Karen and the Shapiro Family for sharing so much of Kenny s time with us. Even though his term of office has come to an end, I know he will continue to be there for us, the members of his Temple Israel Family. Mazel tov and thank you Mr. President for a job well done! With heartfelt appreciation, Rabbi Jay H. Rosenbaum
4 Page 4 V o l um e 2 6 4, I s s ue PRESIDENT S MESSAGE KENNETH A. SHAPIRO Here we are again at the end of another Temple Israel fiscal year. We end our year on June 30th and begin our new fiscal year on July 1st. It has been a year of challenges for our survival and we have succeeded to ensure that our Temple remains vibrant and strong for at least the next 20 years. The main reason for this was the sale of our campus to the Marion & Aaron JCC of the Five Towns who have given us a lease for our sanctuary and exclusive office space for the next 20 years. The negotiations were difficult with many hurdles to go through, but with the help of the Officers, Trustees, and congregants it was accomplished. Special thanks to Jim Rotenberg and Les Martin for all their hard work and counsel during this arduous process. I want to personally thank my officers for all their help and guidance. My first Vice President, Stanley Kopilow is always there for me whether it be a legal matter or just plain old fashioned good advice. Les Martin, Vice President, without his counsel I would have never succeeded. Marc Isseks, Vice President, who always thinks through all sides of an issue and gives his best advice. His hard work for our kids in the religious school, all much appreciated. Ross Whitehead, our Treasurer, who keeps us in the black with his prudent financial work and advice and his keen intuition. Alan Krim, our Financial Secretary, (one of the hardest jobs), who deals with our congregants and makes sure we are all up to date in our payments and pledges. Last but not least, Mary Price, our Secretary, who has shown me her everlasting friendship and is a key player for our future. Our Rabbi, Jay, is always trying some new innovative idea. I speak with him several times a day, and he brings great ideas and insight to our Temple. Our Cantor Galina, who besides her beautiful voice, runs our religious school and works tirelessly for our kids. Alan Freedman, our Executive Director, is self motivated and is always ready to help in any way he can. Our office Staff: Ellen, without you the Temple would not run as smoothly as it does. You are always reminding everyone of what and when things have to be done. You know every aspect of our Temple and ALWAYS finds a way to get it done. Theresa, what a dedicated, sweet, helpful person. Lenore, our bookkeeper, who deals on a day to day basis with the congregants, keeping track of their accounts, and making sure we are always current with our vendors. Our Director of Maintenance, Eric, who doesn't know how to say no, and smiles and gets things we need done properly the first time. Finally a huge thanks to our Temple Congregation who has made my third year as President so rewarding. Now it is time to move on. I have decided three years is a good amount of time, and I must begin some other challenges. Mary Price has been nominated as our new President, and is an excellent choice. She will bring new innovative ideas to our Temple. She knows through many years of experience, all the workings of our organization, and will be there for all of us. I applaud her selection and promise to do all I can to help her and the new slate of officers succeed. I now become a past president, but I promise you I will be an active one. We all look forward to a good future with Temple Israel. B'Shalom

6 Page 6 Volume 264, Issue 194 G R E E T I N G S F R O M C A N T O R G A L I N A M A K AV E Y E V Dear Friends: My heartfelt congratulations to our Adult Volunteer Choir for their outstanding leading in song on Friday, April 28 th, during the Shabbat service. Each time our talented members lift up their voices, the sanctuary is filled with joy, energy and pride. "Chazak, Chazak, V'Nitchazek", "Be Strong, Be Strong and May We be Strengthened!" We traditionally read these words as we finish each book of the Torah, but at this point I would like to wish our singers continued striving for the higher achivements. Recently, our choir established a specific goal: once a year to give a concert with a special theme. On Friday, June 16 th, at 7:30pm, our Congregational Choir will present the concert featuring the wonderful music of Barry Manilow. I am confident that this project will rejuvenate the spirit of our talented members and put our singers in the spotlight. We encourage everyone who finds Jewish music inspiring and loves to sing to join this group. In addition to singing, choir is a fun way of expanding Hebrew vocabulary and making new friends. We meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 7:30-8:30pm in the Chapel, and we perform on the last Shabbat service of the month. We are looking forward to greeting you and celebrating Shabbat together. As I mentioned in my last months article, an important part of my cantorial duties is my work with B'nai Mitzvah students and most of them find it difficult to read Hebrew. I have always asked myself: How can I help my students to learn Hebrew? Many of them come to B nai Mitzvah preparation after years of Hebrew School and still struggle with letter and vowel recognition and accuracy of Hebrew reading. One of my B'nai Mitzvah students who amazed me with excellency of knowing assigned prayers, Torah and Haftarah portions, told me that she practiced them every night before she goes to bed. In order to be prepared for her Bat Mitzvah, she recited prayers for 15 minutes almost every night. Practicing it right before she goes to sleep helped her achieve the goals for the week and made her feel proud that she learned something on her own. She strongly suggested this method of learning because it brought her joy and a feeling of confidence for her big day. I hope this advice will find the attention of my future students and will help them succeed in their meaningful preparation for their special event. Yours in Song, Cantor Galina Makaveyev Religious School Students Learning Hebrew
