2 Page 2 Volume 277, Issue 207 A WORD TO THE WISE R A B B I J AY H. R O S E N B A U M THE IMPORTANCE OF MEMORY This month of November, as we recall two of the most tragic acts of man's inhumanity to man, is a time that speaks to us of the need and importance of remembering the past and the power of prayer to give us hope, as we plan for the future. This November 11 th, marks the hundredth anniversary of the end of World War I which claimed 17 million lives. Yet in spite of being called the War to end all Wars, it was soon followed by World War II which claimed between 50 and 80 million lives, the higher estimation including deaths that resulted from war related disease and famine. Furthermore, this November 2 nd, we commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht, the date on which the Holocaust began claiming 6 million Jewish souls representing one third of world Jewry. Now Temple Israel through our 111-year history, has always addressed the realities of our world no matter how painful they may be. In this way we contributed to making our world a more secure place not only for the Jewish people but for all of God's children. One hundred years ago this month on the first Thanksgiving following the conclusion of the First World War, Temple Israel joined together with the Russell Sage First Presbyterian Church of Far Rockaway and inaugurated the Interfaith Union Thanksgiving Service between our congregations as an act of unity, healing, hope and solidarity between Americans of all faiths. This service whose hundredth anniversary we will celebrate and come together in worship at Temple Israel on Wednesday evening, November 14 th at 7 PM, is the longest continuous Interfaith Service in America between a Jewish and Christian house of worship. It has served as a model for interreligious cooperation, dialogue and worship between Jews and people of other faiths not only in America but across the globe. This Thanksgiving coming at one of the most contentious and divisive times since the Vietnam War, often times pitting not only neighbors, but family members against one another, the message of this service inaugurated a century ago is not only relevant but needed. This is a time to affirm that while we are a nation made up of people of different political parties, philosophies and national origins and faiths, we share the same fate and therefore, must find unity in our diversity. Furthermore, we need to do our part in building bridges of understanding, cooperation, respect and partnership between nations. To this end, the International Student Youth Exchange programs our high school students participate in under the auspices of the North American Board of Rabbis in partnership with the foreign ministries of Israel, Italy and Germany make them not only citizens of the world, but helps make our world more civil.

3 Page 3 Volume 277, Issue 207 Furthermore, this November as Jews around the world join together in prayer on the 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht fulfilling the mitzvah of Zachor, remembering our 6 million who perished in the Shoah, let us remember this too namely, what happens to one Jew anywhere affects all Jews everywhere. That the time has come for us as B'nai Yisrael to love each other more and judge each other less. Our prayers on Kristallnacht, the tears we shed should also remind us of our need to support the State of Israel. That our commitment to The Jewish State is not contingent upon which political party happens to be in power at the time. Yes, the prayers of our hearts need remind us, that in the main, no one will save the Jews except the Jews themselves. For those who doubt this let them also remember that for the Jews seeking refuge from the Nazi monster, the doors of so many countries of the allied nations, including our own, were locked shut. Remember the St. Louis and let us not forget that while Great Britain had issued the Balfour Declaration in 1917 promising the Jewish people a homeland in Israel, in 1939 as the fate of European Jewry was being sealed, issued the White Paper prohibiting Jewish immigration to Palestine. Oh, how many tears would not have been shed, how many prayers would have been answered, how many Jewish lives would have been spared if the Jewish State of Israel was established in 1938 instead of Yes, without doubt, the Shoah teaches us that Jewish unity is the key to our survival. Let us also in remembering the past, reflect upon how faith in God and reaching out to the Holy in prayer gave us the strength to confront as individuals and as a people the seemingly insurmountable challenges that we faced and the courage to dare hope for a better tomorrow. So dear friends, in these coming weeks let us join together as a Temple Family in prayer, fulfilling the mitzvah of Zachor, and give thanks to God for the blessings and bounties he has bestowed upon us and our loved ones. From my family to your family our heartfelt wishes and prayers for a healthy and blessed Thanksgiving. One final note. I have been given the honor as the Rabbi of Temple Israel to lead a delegation of rabbis from across America to join with Jewish leaders from around the world in Berlin for the 80th Anniversary Remembrance of Kristallnacht. During Shabbat services on November 2 nd, I will present the sermon on your behalf in Berlin s Reform Temple.

4 Page 4 Volume 277, Issue 207 P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E M A RYA N NA P R I C E As an American Jew, I have gotten used to being in the minority (and as a Reform Jew in the Five Towns, even more so). So, with that background, a whole new vista opened up for me when I visited Israel for the first time with my husband as a part of a Hadassah Mission. I saw biblical history come alive, interposed with a new and modern atmosphere. Having said, Next year in Jerusalem so often that it was done as a matter of rote, I now explored Jerusalem for real praying at the Kotel (or Western Wall), then climbing 100 feet below its surface to explore tunnels and caves going back 2000 years. And, to show how the past merges with the current and the future, at night I saw an outdoor laser light show projected on the 2000 year old walls of King Herrod s Palace. The next day, we ate a wonderful meal on a cliff hosted in a Druze village, meeting one of the many ethnic groups that comprise part of modern Israel. They serve in the IDF along with Jewish citizens. We saw the Dome of the Rock, which sits above the Temple wall, and saw how living and worshipping so close together really puts cooperation to the test! Our guide showed us a small section of the Temple wall that had been dislodged because the Arabs above were watering the trees next to the Dome of the Rock. The water pooled 70 feet below, caught behind the Temple wall, and dislodged a 5-ton stone. The guide shrugged his shoulders, the stone was being re-inserted, and life goes on. We stayed at Eilat for a day, then crossed into Jordan to see Petra, the ruins made famous in the Indiana Jones Last Crusade movie. What amazed me as much was the bus driver s explanation of the area we drove through to get to Petra, the area previously occupied by Jethro, a priest of Midian, with whom Moses lived, later marrying his daughter (one of the first power intermarriages, that did not destroy the Jewish people), and becoming his father-in-law and helping form our first Judicial codes. As has been said before, those who do not remember the past are condemned to relive it. This month we have two important events that also touch our past. At Thanksgiving, we will be continuing the more than 100 years of tradition by celebrating this holiday with the Russell Sage First Presbyterian Church. Please look in your bulletin for further information on this wonderful event. Also, this month we will be having our Kristallnacht service, commemorating the Night of Broken Glass in Germany, that many deem began the Holocaust. Having just returned from seeing Yad Vashem in Israel, that service has now taken on a whole new perspective for me and my family, having touched our painful past-- but not been defined by it. Yad Vashem ends in the triumph of the state of Israel. MaryAnna Price, President

6 Page 6 Volume 277, Issue 207 G R E E T I N G S F R O M C A N T O R G A L I N A M A K AV E Y E V Dear Friends, Music is neither a luxury of life nor an add-on. I believe that music is vital to human flourishing. A German philosopher, cultural critic, poet, philologist, and Latin and Greek scholar Friedrich Nietzsche said: Without music, life would be a mistake. In the Psalm 149 it is written: 1. Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the faithful. 2. Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King. 3. Let them praise God s name with dancing, making melody to God with tambourine and lyre. 4. For the LORD takes pleasure in his people; God adorns the humble with victory. 5 Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches. 6. Let the high praises of God be in their throats. The final five psalms in the Book of Psalms all begin and end exactly the same with the Hebrew: Hallelu-yah which means Praise God or as most English Bibles translate: Praise the Lord. Psalm 149 places a heavy emphasis on praising God by singing and making music. Outside of worship, music is directed toward an audience, but when people of faith worship, each piece of music choral or instrumental is directed toward God. Most music in our culture is a performance that is intended to entertain and applaud. But, in worship, music is played and sung, for an audience of one the Creator of heaven and earth. We can be moved to tears or injected with courage; we can be drawn closer to God or inspired to action. Sacred music can give voice to deep longings or help us gain a new perspective; it can calm our soul and create internal peace or revive our hope in a new day. Often hymns, anthems and musical pieces undergird, reinforce and expand the message of our sacred writings and our services. Music can take words that have been embraced by our minds and imbed them in our bones. Music can touch deep places within us and transport us to different times. That is why some people love a particular melody or hymn. I am often asked by congregants to sing Adon Olam at the end of Shabbat service or All the World during High Holidays. I think that this happens because the music resonates with them despite the words, because it carries them back to a childhood memory or a special occasion. Music engages a part of us that is not simply cerebral and expresses thoughts and feelings in a way that words alone cannot. Music can be a vehicle to express an intuition or a feeling that stirs in our souls but is beyond language. Gustav Mahler said, If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music. And in a related vein, Victor Hugo said, Music expresses that which cannot be said but on which it is impossible to remain silent.
