2 Page 2 Volume 262, Issue 192 A WORD TO THE WISE R ABBI J AY H. R O S E N B A U M PASSOVER, OUR HOLIDAY OF SYMBOLS, LIBERATION AND FOR SHOWING APPRECIATION So, let us begin by showing appreciation for our beloved Temple Israel. Temple Israel is not simply a Bet Tefilah House of Prayer, but the Bet Knesset, the Spiritual Center and the pulpit from which the needs, concerns and voice of World Jewry and Social Justice is articulated and heard. Temple Israel is not only a congregation that I am privileged to serve as its Rabbi, but as with you, my spiritual home. Our Temple is the sacred space where we have celebrated the most important moments in our lives. For Amy and myself, this is the sacred space where our son, Jordan, in addition to our three grandsons, Dylan, Ryan and Liam, were brought into the covenant of Abraham, at their Brit Milah s and named in our Sanctuary. Jordan celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Israel and he and Michelle were married under a Chuppah on our Bimah. Indeed, my rabbinate was shaped and modeled after the rabbinate of Rabbi Zion, of blessed memory, having served as the assistant rabbi of the congregation, as well as Director of Education. It was a time some have referred to as the glory days of Temple Israel. Well glory is not measured in numbers and much glory awaits us in the future, for we are a Temple family that serves our congregants and stands on the front lines in the battle for Jewish survival in America, Israel and around the globe. My commitment to you goes beyond the professional and is at the very core of my being. I see it as a sacred commitment to be present and involved with the members of our Temple in their times of need, as pastor, confidant, friend and extended family member. It is in this spirit of extended family that I share with you these interpretations of the Passover symbols at the Seder table from my home to yours. The Karpas, parsley, which is a symbol of spring, reminds us that just as seasons change for the better, so can life. We can all testify to the old saying, March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb. Just as the storms of winter ultimately pass, so too, the storms and hardships that come into our lives pass. With faith in God and ourselves, never losing hope, we too can weather the storms that come into everyone s life and emerge to a new day of renewed love, happiness and peace. The Hillel sandwich which is a combination of the sweet Charoset and bitter Maror reminds us that we have the strength to overcome the bitter and difficult times in our lives and that we should enjoy the sweet moments in life while we have them. The Afikoman, which is the broken half of the matzoh, reminds us of our need to work for Jewish unity; that we should not be a people broken, or divided against itself. With the seemingly constant condemnation of the State of Israel by the World Community of Nations and the UN wanting to label Israel an Apartheid State, this lesson takes on greater meaning this year. Furthermore, there has been a resurgence of anti-semitism in the United States and across the globe unprecedented since the end of the Shoah. Across our country, we have seen a spike in attacks on Jewish cemeteries, swastikas spray painted on schools, Synagogues and even on the New York Subway System. There have been over 150 bomb threats at Jewish Community Centers, Jewish Schools, Synagogues and even the Anti-Defamation League in New York. In Europe, attacks on Jewish schools and a kosher grocery store in Paris are examples of a trend on the rise which has included anti-semitic incidents, not only in Germany and Britain, but across the EU. In fact, an EU Agency for Human Rights reported, a few months ago, in an extensive survey, that 76% of the Continents Jewish population believe there has been an increase in anti-semitism over the past 5 years. Oh yes, it is as important today as ever to take the message of Afikoman to heart and recognize that we are, indeed, one people of one faith and one fate responsible one for the other. The Shank Bone symbolizes the Holocaust, for what else can a piece of burnt flesh be?
3 Page 3 Volume 262, Issue 192 As we remember the Shoah, let us take its central lesson to heart: That no one will save the Jews, save the Jews themselves. With this in mind, we must strengthen our commitment to the State of Israel. Our relationship to the Jewish State is that of limited partners. As such, we have no right to dictate to Israel what course of action it should take in its sacred mission to find peace with security. However, we have the responsibility to support Israel with all our hearts and souls and means at our disposal. Therefore, we must insist on Israel s right to self-defense and speak up and speak out on behalf of the Jewish State to our elected officials in Washington. Remember! Put not your faith in kings or princes. Remember! That no other nation in modern history has sacrificed more and given up more of its territory in the pursuit of peace. The Egg is at the very heart of the Seder for it represents our children. We are all familiar with the expression, It s all about me. This approach to life is as unwholesome as it is un-jewish. However, the Seder is all about them, our children. It is their need to learn, to understand, to remember and to celebrate that we focus on at the Seder. From the days of Abraham, we were taught that unlike other peoples, we do not sacrifice our children, but rather sacrifice for our children. Our children and grandchildren are the future of the Jewish people, the future of the World, our immortality and sacred trust. We enrich their lives and help them on the way to secure a happy future when we show them, and teach them about the glory, beauty and joy one can find as a Jew who is involved with their people, Temple and Community. Amy, Michelle, Dylan, Ryan, Liam, Jordan and I wish you a happy, healthy and sweet Passover. Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum speaking at a unity rally against hate crimes and anti-semitism, Sunday, March 5 th on the steps of Queens Borough Hall. In his remarks, the Spiritual Leader of Temple Israel of Lawrence, and President North American Board of Rabbis, made reference to the holiday of Purim that Jews worldwide will celebrate this coming weekend. He stated, A plot to destroy Persian Jewry twenty-six hundred years ago, by Haman, a hater of Jews and minorities in the Kings Palace was defeated because good people, led by Queen Esther, spoke up and acted. Rabbi Rosenbaum went on to say, On this day, Melinda Katz, Borough President of Queens, by calling this rally in the wake of over a 90% increase in anti-semitic incidents this year alone, and the spike of 65% in hate crimes between November and the end of December 2016, is our Queen Esther. 4 Page 4 V o l um e 2 6 2, I s s ue PRESIDENT S MESSAGE KENNETH A. SHAPIRO We just arrived back from Thailand and Laos. What a trip! We tried to find some Chabad (Synagogues), no such luck. Both countries are predominately Buddhist. We visited more Buddhist Temples than probably all the Synagogues in the Five Towns. It is an interesting religion as they don't pray to a God nor an individual, although Buddha was an actual person. It is about doing the right thing for others and leading a good respectable life. We interviewed a Monk and admired their whole philosophy on life and the way they view other religions and the world's politics. We have much to learn from these interesting people. Laos in particular is a very poor, underdeveloped country, but the people are happy and content. The unfortunate thing that is even affecting them today is during the Vietnam war, many bombs were planted underground by both the Vietnamese and Americans, and people have had limbs blown off; how horrible. We were so moved by this that we have joined a charity group in Laos giving money to find and destroy these underground mines. I have to say we are glad to be back and having attended services at Temple Israel since we returned, we realize how lucky we are. Spring is finally here and we are looking forward to Passover and enjoying the Seders with our families. I am famous for my special Matzah Brei recipe handed down from my great grandfather. It is a holiday treat and tastes best with apple sauce. Please join us for the Passover and Yizkor service on Friday evening April 14th. Please read the Bulletin for schedules of other events. Our Wine and Dine program, planned by Elaine Prusack, has been a big growing success. Last month is was held at Blue Moon. It is a purely social evening to get together with friends, have a good meal and enjoy each other s company. Please don't miss the Rabbi's monthly lectures. Lunch is provided by the Temple and we discuss the relevant topics of the day. Torah study every Saturday morning at 9:30 is a must. Once a month it will be held at the Sherwood Diner where we will enjoy breakfast together and have a lively discussion. Please don't forget on Sunday, May 7th, we are having brunch at the Lawrence Club. All proceeds will go to benefit the Finkelstein Family who have been loyal and devoted members of our congregation for many years. Unfortunately, Cindy has a very compromising disease and we, as a congregation, are doing all we can to help her. Lisa Gray and Robyn Kopilow have organized this event and have put together a wonderful program. Friday evening services have been a big success, including Cantorial Concerts, lively discussions, a few Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and special guests. You will be missing out if you don't attend, please join us; you won t be sorry. As our Temple Financial year winds down, please consider making a contribution to any one of our special funds by June 30th. Also, all financial obligations must be settled by June 30th; please contact our bookkeeping office. I look forward to seeing you all at these many events. My family and I wish our Temple Israel family a Zissen Pesach.

6 Page 6 Volume 262, Issue 192 G R E E T I N G S F R O M C A N T O R G A L I N A M A K AV E Y E V Dear Friends, I would like to highlight our special events and programs that made last month so special and amazing. On Sunday, March 12 th, our Purim Gala celebration was filled with many laughs and boos when we heard the name of Haman. On Friday, March 31 st, during our Annual MLK Service, our Congregational Choir led Shabbat Service in Song. It is always a pleasure to listen to our talented members and sing with them. I would like to thank their families and congregation for their continued support and admiration. We welcome new singers at any time! In Jewish tradition springtime is seen as a time of growth, renewal, and the cycle of life is once again starting. It is also seen more generally as the start of better times. Passover is known as a spring festival which ritual observance centers around the Seder with reading the Haggadah and singing songs. Music has been an integral part of the Jewish life and this joyous holiday is no exception. As our ancestors celebrated the miraculous escapade from Egypt with music, it is my hope that the songs of Passover will enhance your Seder and the message of the holiday. Chag Pesach Sameach! Have a joyful Passover! Yours in Song, Cantor Galina Makaveyev Purim Celebration Sunday, March 12, 2017 Save the Date! G A L I N A M A K AV E Y E V CANTOR/DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION 4/04 Religious School FAMILY Passover Seder, TEMPLE ISRAEL 4/ NO Religious School, Passover Break 4/25 Religious School, EARLY DISMISSAL 5:30PM, LWA Dear Families, To begin, I would like to congratulate our 4 th grade students for their wonderful participation at our Shabbat Across America Service on Friday, March 3rd. Our students received their very own first Siddurim and led the congregation in prayer readings and Shabbat songs resulting in a very meaningful experience for everyone in attendance. I wish our students and their families a hearty Mazal Tov! Our thanks go to our School Educators and Parents for contributing to the success of this special Service. On Sunday, March12th, our Temple held a Gala Purim celebration with the Megillah Reading followed by a fun-filled Purim Carnival. During the service, Religious School students retold the story of Purim by acting out the roles of the Beauty and the Beast Purim Shpiel characters. Their performance was fantastic and made our celebration even more joyous and energetic. I would like to thank all the people who made contributions and worked hard to make our Carnival successful: the Grays, Clarkes, Stolls, the many parents, the Religious School Educators, the Hebrew High School Students and our post B nei Mitzvah students for running the Carnival booths. It was a great event and a fantastic celebration; everyone had fun and ate lots of hamentashen! We are thankful to the Sklar family for sponsoring the carnival s games and activities. Every year we gather together at the Seder, a special meal, and read the Haggadah. It is our obligation to fulfill the mitzvah of re-telling our children the story and message of the Holiday and the celebration of the physical and political freedom of the Jewish people from the pharaoh of Egypt. On April 4 th, our Religious School will hold the Model Passover Seder at Temple Israel at which time our students and parents will read the story of Passover and enjoy the holiday dinner. We are thankful to the Sklar family for contributing the Children s Haggadah to our school and sponsoring the family dinner. Their generosity enables our families to more effectively follow the narrative and connect to the Jewish people s heritage. My warmest wishes for a Happy and Sweet Passover!
