1 Rabbi Michael Ungar To the entire BE THS family: L shanah tovah tikatevu May you be written down for a good year. A story is told of an old Jewish man who was involved in an automobile accident. Luckily, no one was injured seriously, but ambulances were called to the site anyway. Just to be safe, the EMTs decided to take the man to the hospital. They placed him on a gurney and wheeled him into the ambulance. As they closed the door one EMT turned to him and asked, are you comfortable? Without missing a beat, the old man answered, I make a nice living. We live in a society in which we place a fair amount of emphasis on comfort. There are pain clinics, La-Z-Boy recliners, and car seats with warmers; we do not like to be uncomfortable (just ask anyone who has flown coach to Israel!). While this might be an American value, being comfortable is not necessarily a Jewish one. Moses warned about getting complacent; he feared that the people would grow lazy and fail to appreciate G-d s blessings. The Judges and Prophets shared the same message, as did many of our sages. They warned us not to get so used to our prayers that they become rote. We are taught to try to bring new meaning to mitzvot, to challenge ourselves to try new ones, and to learn about Judaism from different angles. It is significant that we are called Israel; this name, given to Jacob, means to NEWSLETTER September YR$T / 5778 LWLA A Comfortable New Year? struggle with God. Even in our relationship with the Lord we are not supposed to get too comfortable! It is important to remember this as we go into a new Jewish year. We often become accustomed to doing things the same way year after year. We have parts of ourselves that we want to change, but we do not because we have simply gotten used to them. There are new challenges we know we should take on, but we are afraid of what the change might mean. In short, we do not want to be too uncomfortable. This is near and dear to me this year especially as I make a new home with my wife in Cleveland. Luckily, I am not worried about any discomfort in our relationship, but otherwise there are a lot of changes in store for me. These changes will push me outside of my comfort zone and this is a good thing. As a congregation, Beth El the Heights Synagogue will probably sense some discomfort too. For over twenty years, Rabbi Adler has led the congregation; his mark is on so much of BE THS ethos and vibe. A new rabbi arriving on the scene is a big change. There are lots of questions: What will change? What will remain the same? What will the reaction be? Will this still feel like home? (continued on page 6) Beth El - The Heights Synagogue builds vibrant Jewish community. We welcome all in participatory, traditional, egalitarian worship and learning. The Pause That Reflects According to Jewish tradition, it is customary to blow the Shofar from Rosh Hodesh (the New Moon) of the month of Elul until the day before Rosh Hashana so that people will be aroused to prayer and t shuvah. T shuvah literally means return. Spiritual return is a process of re-alignment with the Divine Spark within and around us, and with family and community. During the High Holy Days, we are bidden to search within our own hearts to find ways to improve to work on mitzvot, to treat others better, to let G-d into our lives. And in preparation, we can seek out people we have hurt, slighted, or wronged -- in order to apologize and ask for forgiveness. Debra Cash, involved with the Board of Directors of the National Havurah Committee, reminds us that we get comfortable with the way we do things even when our habits are less than noble. Even spiritually, the little habits and negative thoughts we have as people are comfortable because we are used to them. From the easy dismissal of someone else s feelings and a bit of malicious gossip to the ability to ignore injustice, evil habits become easy to repeat, hard to challenge, nearly unnoticeable. T shuvah challenges the negative habits, first by challenging us to notice what we do. The hard work of change is to choose not to continue the false habits that we are so comfortable with. We also may reflect on hurts we have received during the past year. Rabbi Edith Held Mencher comments as follows: We actually can feel newly wounded at the High Holiday services as we remember the ways in which parents, Beth El The Heights Synagogue Newsletter, Vol. 21, No. 1, September 2018 Beth El The Heights Synagogue Carol Bruml, Editor Telephone , news@bethelheights.org Submittal deadline is the 7 th of each month Desota Ave., Cleveland Heights, OH Published 11 times per year. For address or mailing list change, call spouses, ex-spouses, siblings, and friends may have hurt us but seem not to grasp their impact. They may actually rebuff our efforts to have them understand and change, perhaps telling us that we brought the bad treatment on ourselves or that we should get over it and move on. As we attempt to use the liturgy to reflect upon our own desire to change, we may find ourselves considering the many painful impasses and high levels of conflict in some of our relationships. So part of this process involves making peace with people we have been upset with and really letting the hurts go even if the other party does NOT apologize! Make peace with our fellow man. This is also true of our own community. If we have offended anyone, please let us know. Give us a chance to offer an apology. If you have offended anyone within our congregation, please contact that person and apologize. Even if you didn t mean to hurt them. Or even if you did. Shanah tovah! 3 The Flip Side of Convenience It is exactly for the reasons that I found this article difficult to write, that you may want to consider becoming a member of Beth El The Heights Synagogue. Let me start from the beginning. Soon after our synagogue was founded, we agreed to describe Beth El The Heights Synagogue as traditional, participatory, and egalitarian. Years later, we still wear these labels on our sleeves. We are very proud that so many of our members keep this synagogue active and vibrant. Over these last twenty years, we have continued to grow as individuals and as a congregation. But none of it was easy. It took a lot of hard work from all of our members to get us where we are today. We all rolled up our sleeves and got our hands dirty, and we continue to do so. This work ranges from washing dishes, to helping prepare Shabbat lunches, leining, preparing divrei Torah and more. Admittedly, at times, the aggregate of these efforts has taken a toll on many of us. It s not easy to maintain a synagogue, from infrastructure to growing members; it is a lot of work, and it is time consuming. But, like everything, there s always another side Earlier this year, I came across an article about inconvenience. 1 The author put forth an eloquent argument about how inconvenience can be both a positive and a negative. Instinctively, most of us probably already know this. Some conveniences are great, others not so good. My guess is that each of you can make a lengthy list of both. After I read the article I realized (for full transparency) that I grew up in a very convenient synagogue. Every Shabbat there were people who provided me with grape juice and pastries; services and sermons were routinely presented; and someone always planned the extracurricular activities for me. It was very nice, and it worked. After I entered adulthood, and became a member of Beth El The Heights Synagogue, I came to appreciate the work needed to create that convenience. The learning never stopped at BE THS; the challenges were both formidable and enticing. It was because of this atmosphere 3 that I grew as a person, and my life became enriched. Back then, I was reluctant to assume the role of the shul presidency; I thought it daunting. I knew I would have a very difficult time maintaining the high standards set by our previous presidents. I was right on both counts, but in the end, I was the better for all of my time and effort. Recently, I pitched the following concept to our Board: Perhaps we Beth El The Heights Synagogue should be considered an inconvenient synagogue, because inconvenience, at many levels can be good. Some board members really liked the idea, others thought it abhorrent, and still others wanted an alternative. This is why the article is difficult to write: I don t have a resolution for the inconvenience label. Rabbi Michael Ungar just recently joined Beth El The Heights Synagogue as our new rabbi, following the footsteps of our Rabbi Emeritus, Moshe Adler. Rabbi Ungar noticed the inconvenience side of BE-THS right away; he stated that no one can be a wallflower here. If you want to learn, grow, and be active, please consider Beth El - The Heights Synagogue. Opportunities, and the participatory nature of our shul, coupled with high standards and work, make for better individuals and community, and that s what s special about Beth El The Heights Synagogue. 1. How do you enhance a Beth El service, improve your knowledge of the service, and increase your familiarity with the congregation without formally participating in a service? Answer: By ushering a service. Thank you to Lyndhurst Florist Lyndhurst Florist generously donated five trays of herbs, vegetables, and flowers, a wonderful and encouraging contribution as we began our project of beautifying our landscaping and growing crops that we can use in our kitchen. This gift was very much appreciated. (Lyndhurst Florist, 5368 Mayfield Road, Lyndhust 44124, Karen Kugelman is stepping down or perhaps one should say sitting down from her duties as Head Usher, which she has shouldered since the very beginning of Heights Synagogue, twenty years ago. Thankfully, she is accepting the title of Usher Consultant Extraordinaire. However, she sure could use a couple of new clients, and as the new Head Usher, I m obliged to find them. The only requirement is that you agree to usher one service per (secular, solar) month. So, here is your opportunity to become a great enabler of religious conviction by learning from the master. Our participatory, welcoming service is rarely anarchic because of Karen s knowledge and deft touches. If I can become a decent emulator of her ways, so can you! Just drop me a line expressing qyour interest: Joel Genuth, jgenuth@hotmail.com. Joel Genuth High Holy Day Tickets Members should have received their tickets by now. If you have not, please call the synagogue office or fill out the form on our web page, Tickets requested now will be held at the main entrance; pick yours up from an usher. Getting the mailing out would not have been possible without the help of Bud Stern and Robin Dubin writing letters, Karen Kugelman managing the Book of Remembrance letters and booklet, Bruce Wilkenfeld folding and schlepping, and Mia Buchwald Gelles and Carol Bruml making everything happen. As with most things that happen at BE THS, it takes a lot of helping hands for any accomplishment. 6 (A Comfortable New Year? continued from page 1) I plan to take the first year to get to know all of you and the way BE THS does things. There will be some changes for sure, but hopefully introduced in a thoughtful and respectful way. Not everyone will like the changes, while others might be enthusiastic about them. It will, in short, be a little uncomfortable and our tradition teaches us that this is okay if not necessary and good. Memorial Plaque Space remains available on our memorial plaque. Each bronze name plate has room for three lines of text; you will be able to preview the design before it is cast in bronze. Donation for each name plate is $324 (Chai 2, or $18 x $18). If you have questions or need a copy of the form, contact Karen Kugelman, I am so excited to start this new direction in my rabbinic journey; you have all been so welcoming and helpful. As we move forward together, I hope that you will feel a little uncomfortable but comfortable enough to share with me your thoughts and preferences. In this New Year, I am certain that we can help each other as we work (and perhaps occasionally stumble) through this new phase in the life of our congregation. Our discomfort can only help us grow and succeed. Best wishes from my family to you and yours for a happy, healthy, and (un)comfortable 5779! q Rabbi Michael Ungar Cemetery Plots Available Sometimes it is hard to think about certain aspects of life, but people do look ahead and plan for the future in many ways. In the 1950 s Temple Beth El bought hundreds of cemetery plots at Zion Memorial Park at Northfield and Rockside Roads. Many members are interred there, including Rabbi David Genuth z l. 7 A tale is told of a simple Jew, a poor man, one Schmuyel by name. He lived an ordinary pious life, praying, toiling, not complaining. Yet Schmuyel was no hero. Oh, no, he took no big risks; he made no big splash in the world. No scholar, no intellect, one could hardly even call him an example for his fellow man. Until one knows his story. It transpired that Schmuyel lived a long and not remarkable life. He died, and his soul was transported to Heaven, as it is written. When the soul of this Schmuyel arrived in Heaven, not one but two legions of angels accompanied him into the divine space. Trumpets sounded, everyone was smiling: it looked and sounded like a hero s welcome. But Schmuyel was no hero. Hasidic Tales of Our Times: The Little Mitzvah One of the most recently arrived asked some questions of his more experienced neighbor. We will call the greenhorn David. David: Some great man? Other: No David: A scholar, a great intellect perhaps, but he doesn t look it. Other: No David: A model of piety? Other: No David: But such a welcome! He must have done something great! Other: No, not great. David: Something small? A big fanfare for something small?? David was genuinely perplexed. I ll tell you about Schmuyel, said the more knowledgeable angel. This Schmuyel was a pious man who went to minyan, said his prayers, a regular Yid. One day, about ten years before his appointed time, he was davening with his fellows and the Hazzan said a particularly heartfelt prayer. Schmuyel noticed that a man standing next to him was not completely alert. This Schmuyel noodged the man, and the group said Amayn together. There were ten voices raised in Amayin, instead of only the nine who were paying strict attention. This prayer and this group Amayn rose up to Heaven, and the Almighty heard it. A terrible disaster that was about to happen in that town was averted, and the lives of nineteen townspeople were saved. It is for the noodge and this Amayn that we are celebrating Schmuyel s entrance into the heavenly flock. The spirit of David wiped away a tear of joy and went up to Schmuyel and kissed him on both cheeks. Baruch Hashem, said David. Schmuyel smiled back and said, Amayn. q 7 By Dr. Bud Stern, IHO Rabbi Moshe Adler Dr. Chasis & the Battle Against Tuberculosis Judith Gerblich invites you and your friends to a showing of a short film about her father s work as a doctor who helped eradicate the widespread outbreak of tuberculosis that occurred in Israel after the Holocaust, when Israel was declared a state and Jews from across the diaspora began to make aliyah.
