1 ECE Newsletter Dec. 1, 2017 ECE at a Glance Chanukah Dinner & Art Show Vacation Day Programming 12/14 12/26 12/29 ECE Closed 12/25 & 1/1 Tzedakah Each month, we designate a different charity or organization for our Shabbat Tzedakah collection. We encourage parents to tell us about organizations that are close to your hearts. Tzedakah is collected in the classrooms on Fridays during Shabbat, but feel free to bring coins in earlier in the week if it is more convenient. Donations will be held until Fridays so the children will contribute as a group. In our newsletters, we will include as many specifics about each organization as possible so that you will understand the importance of the charity. For the months of November and December, we will be collecting money for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. The Regional Food Bank is a non-profit organization whose mission to is alleviate hunger and prevent food waste. As a whole, the Food Bank is able to deliver 31 million pounds of food to over 23 counties in New York. For more information, please visit

2 Mazel Tov to Andrea on the birth of her grandson! Baby Leighton, whose name will be announced at the Bris Ceremony, was born on November 26, 2017 at 6:22am to proud parents Stephanie and Zachary Leighton who live in Netanya, Israel!

3 Purple Room Meta, Ceceila, & Maria Happy December from the Purple Room. Hard to believe 2018 is almost here! As is our way, we have been quite busy this past month with Shabbat and Thanksgiving. We have many traditions at the SJCC one of our most memorable is Shabbat every Friday. We celebrate both in our rooms and at 11:30 in ASEP ROOM A with the whole Preschool. We asked the children to share some traditions from their families and we shared some of ours with them. We talked about having pizza on Friday nights, having stories read to us every night, or getting in your snowsuit when you wake up after an overnight snow storm and going out to play in it and then coming in and having hot cocoa. We transformed the dramatic play area into a Shabbat dining table. It was incredible how detailed the children were in their pretend play. We even used our Shabbat play area for our weekly Shabbat using the candle holder from Meta s home. We read many books one of our favorites was The Shabbat box by Lesley Simpson. Each child created their own Shabbat box to bring home to play with. We sang Shabbat songs, again we have favorites such as the Soup Song and Bim Bam. You may have heard us travelling around the JCC singing some of these songs on our way to the gym or the pool. Next, we read stories about being thankful and came up with our own list of what we are all thankful for. We used this list to create our Thankful Turkey that is hanging on the wall outside the Purple Room. We learned about how the pilgrims came to America. How their trip and first year was so difficult. That once they got settled, created a relationship with the Native Americans and had their first successful harvest the Pilgrims had the first Thanksgiving feast. This feast lasted 3 dayswow! The children enjoyed our ECE Thanksgiving luncheon (another SJCC tradition.) It was also great to have so many parents join us. Thank you for your fruit donations, the fruit salad was a hit! Now it is late autumn and winter is close. Our room is warming up with the lights of Hanukkah. Make sure to sign up for our Annual Art Show and Hanukkah Dinner on Thursday December 14. This is one SJCC tradition you don t want to miss.
