Rabbi Kevin Hale, who repaired one of our other Torah scrolls in the fall, referred us to tiferes.com, where we ordered the new rollers. We also purchased special thread known as giddin, made from the sinews of a cow, to attach the scroll to the roller. All I knew about replacing a Torah s etz chayim wooden roller I learned in one YouTube video, and quickly became the expert. Caroline Nudelman, Rabbi David, and Esther Keaney assisted as we rolled the Torah to one end, and I carefully removed the old knots attaching the parchment to its roller. One of the rollers had the name of Rabbi Weismon written on it; I remember asking Nessie Baron if she remembered Rabbi Weismon; she said he was the rabbi who performed her wedding. We've had this Torah for a long time! I am doing this with the intention of making הרני עושה לשם קדושת ספר תורה the Sefer Torah have holiness" is the intention recited before beginning the repair. Threading a long needle, I did most of the sewing, as we lined up the parchment with the holes predrilled in the new roller. Since the new etz chayim is three inches shorter than the original, the remaining holes on the parchment did not match up, so we had to poke new ones. I wrapped the gid (string) around the pole and through each hole about three or four times before tying a knot, as Esther and Caroline held the scroll tight. Rabbi David looked on and made sure the writing on the parchment was protected with a tallit to prevent it from becoming damaged as we attached it to the new etz chayim. A drop of crazy glue kept the knot and threads in place after it was tied. (That was in the video!) Temple Beth Israel 25 Harvard Street Waltham, MA (781) office@tbiwaltham.org Office Hours Monday - Friday 9:30 am - 12:30 pm We repeated this process twice more for the other holes on this roller, then unrolled the Torah to the other side, detached the parchment, and started over again. Two hours later, our Torah is good as new. Many people are called up to the Torah, read from it, lift or tie it. It is a rare honor to repair a Torah scroll, and a great gift we were able to give to our community. We read from the "blonde Torah" (so nicknamed because of the light color of the wood on the new rollers) on Parashat Bo, in January, and sang a rousing Shehechiyanu upon lifting it for the first time.

From the Brotherhood By: Paul Smith "The TBI Brotherhood like all good Americans spent Sunday, the 4th, watching the Superbowl within the confines and blessings of The Temple. The fervor and fever pitch of the night stayed within civilized tempos but the excitement and the loyalty was still there. For those of The Brotherhood who could not make it you'll be given another opportunity at the next battle of the champions be it the Celtics, Bruins, or maybe even The Red Sox." Can You Hem? We re looking for a volunteer with a sewing machine and sewing skills who can hem one of our Torah covers. It is now too tall. Computer Monitor Wanted Do you have an old flat-screen monitor you re no longer using? We d like to move the old office computer to the library for general use, but need a monitor for it. Please RSVP to the Temple Office by phone: or office@tbiwaltham.org Mussar Group: Character & Jewish Values facilitated by Rabbi David Finkelstein MEETING TIMES: March 14 always 7:00-8:30 pm at Temple Beth Israel This monthly weekday evening study and practice group uses the Mussar curriculum developed by award-winning author and Boston area Mussar teacher Rabbi David Jaffe. As the title of the group indicates, Mussar is an approach to Jewish learning and being that focuses on the observation and development of our character and our study of Jewish values. Together we will study Torah, Talmud, Mussar masters from medieval times to the 21 st century and from the Old World to the New. The initial meetings in October and November were introductory. This December, we will begin our study of spiritual character traits (middot), which is a core aspect of Mussar. There will also be time for reflection, sharing in small groups, and trying on spiritual practices. Please bring a journal to write in. Participation is open to all. If you missed the introductory sessions but you want to try it out, please contact me at rabbidavid@tbiwaltham.org. I ll catch you up so that you can join us. Jewish Singing Circle a new initiative by Rabbi David Finkelstein MEETING TIMES: February 24, March 24 always 1:30-2:30 pm at Temple Beth Israel Inspired by Joey Weisenberg's book Building Singing Communities, this Jewish Singing Circle offers an hour of singing wordless tunes while sitting in a circle. The circle will meet monthly on the Shabbat afternoons listed above. In each session, we learn to sing and then explore one song or niggun (wordless Jewish melody), singing it approximately ten times in as many different ways. In October and November, we explored one Hasidic niggun from the Bobover sect and one part of a Morris Hollender melody for the Shabbat poem (K)El Adon. In the coming months, we will learn more of the Morris Hollender melody, and I hope to bring another Hasidic niggun, too. Participation is free and open to all. Page 5

10 Ta anit Bekhorot: Fast of the First Born Siyyum Following Morning Minyan Breakfast with Mayor Jeanette McCarthy Friday, March 30th 7:00 am On the night the first born of the Egyptians were slain, the first born of the Israelites were saved. To remember the loss of the life and in gratitude for salvation, firstborn children fast on the day preceding Pesach. The fast begins at dawn on Friday, March 30th and the common practice is to break the fast in the morning at a seudat mitzvah (a celebratory meal) following a siyyum, the celebration of the completion of study of a unit of Torah, Mishnah, or Talmud. The siyyum creates a joyful atmosphere that pushes aside the requirement to continue the fast. The siyyum will take place immediately following morning minyan, Friday, March 30th at 7am. This year s siyyum is sponsored by Merrill and Carol Griff. The latest time for eating hametz on Friday, March 30th is 10:25am. Visit to view the Rabbinical Assembly's Guide for preparing your home for Passover. POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR MECHIRAT HAMETZ Note: If possible, all hametz should be eaten or removed before the holiday begins. Should this be financially difficult, the hametz may be stored in such a way that we are sure not to use it during the holiday and its actual ownership is transferred to a non-jew until the holiday ends. Please complete this form, which must be received in the mail no later than Thursday March 29th, to make sure it gets to the Rabbi in time. You may deliver it to the Rabbi in person by 7:00 am, Friday March 30th. It is customary to use this as an opportunity to give tzedakah. I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi David Finkelstein to act in my behalf to sell all hametz possessed by me knowingly or unknowingly as defined by Torah and rabbinic law, and to lease all places wherein hametz owned may be found. Rabbi David Finkelstein has the full power and authority to assign or appoint a substitute to act in my behalf with all the same powers and authority that I have invested in the rabbi. This transaction will be in effect for the duration of Pesach, which this year begins with sundown of Friday, March 30th and runs through nightfall of Saturday, April 7th, And to this I hereby affix my signature on this day of, in the year Signed Name Printed Name Address
