N o v e m b e r P a g e 2 Sunday Evening Memorial and Solidarity Service for the Squirrel Hill Jewish Community By: Rabbi David Finkelstein (Continued from page 1) present and escaped my notice) Rev. Robin Olsen, Spiritual Life Director at Bentley University - spoke about the Holocaust survivor who taught her Hebrew when she worked on a kibbutz; the value of love (attended with Rabbi Jeff Foust and several Bentley students) Padre Angel Marrero, lead priest of Santuario Luterano, Waltham s progressive Spanish-speaking Lutheran church - spoke about the responsibility of Christian communities to advocate for and partner with Jewish communities in light of the history of anti-semitism baked into the bones of Christianity (attended with several parishioners from his church) Also in attendance were Rev. Rebecca Sheble-Hall of First Parish Waltham and Chaplains on the Way, Rev. Rebecca Black of Christ Church Episcopal Waltham, Pastor Tom Maehl of First Lutheran Waltham, Father DiPerri of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted PRAYERS and READINGS El Malei Rachamim (prayer for the uplift of those who have passed on) 23rd Psalm Mourner s Kaddish Mi Shebeirakh for the Wounded Prayer of Gratitude for the Selfless Work of Police and Rescue Workers Tree of Life by Rick Lupert (a poem) Etz Chayyim Hee / It is a Tree of Life God Bless America (Continued on page 3)
P a g e 3 Sunday Evening Memorial and Solidarity Service for the Squirrel Hill Jewish Community By: Rabbi David Finkelstein (Continued from page 2) A WORD from RABBI DAVID Rather than repeat what I said on Sunday evening, which was addressed to our entire extended Waltham community - I want to speak directly to the inner circle, to the Temple Beth Israel family. My dear beloved community, Although most of us are neither primary nor secondary mourners of the unspeakable mortal violence in Squirrel Hill, nevertheless we are hurting, sad, and afraid. Jews worldwide are hurting. Please don t hesitate to be in touch with me just to talk. You don t need a better reason. The best way to reach me is to call my cell phone at In the past, I ve sometimes let calls go to voic , but I will suspend that practice indefinitely while we grieve this traumatic loss. By staying connected we will be refreshed and our strength renewed. The Jews who were killed last Shabbat morning were the precious, dedicated, inspiring community members who show up at the beginning of the service. These dear people arrive early because they want to make sure that others can say kaddish to remember their loved ones. They make prayers happen. They are the unsung pillars of the community. They awaken compassion and affection in all of us. They were also the elders of the community, ranging in age from 54 to 97. This loss really hurts. Although the killer seems to have been driven by racial hatred and paranoia, the killer s identification of HIAS as a force for settling refugees in this country is correct. I hope you will join me in donating to HIAS at this time - some of you have already done so - in order to support the great work they do and have done for the Jewish people and for the world s refugees. Do not be afraid. I know you are afraid. So am I. Do not be afraid. Hashem is with us. And we are with each other. We need each other, and we need the deep wisdom and balm of Torah more than ever. Let s sing together, pray together, learn Torah together, and connect. Am Yisrael Chai. Be strong and of good courage. Think of some ways you can honor the lives lost in Pittsburgh and get busy honoring them. Come to a service. Arrive earlier than you usually do. Put on tefillin. Ask for an aliyah. Show other Jews they are not alone. There is strength in numbers. The leadership of Temple Beth Israel is engaged in a conversation about security moving forward. In the meantime, remember that your Jewishness is precious and beautiful. To me, to you, and to God. May the memory of our dear departed brothers and sisters from Pittsburgh be for a blessing. As for those who hate, we shall outlive them. Yours in grief and resolve, Rabbi David
P a g e 4 Mark s Remarks - An Evening of Healing and Solidarity By: Mark Frydenberg I first saw the news of the tragic mass-murder at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 27 th, on Facebook early that afternoon. My cousin, who lives a few miles from that synagogue in Squirrel Hill, marked himself safe, as the details began to unfold. Late that afternoon and early into the evening, my phone began to ring. What can we do as a community in Waltham to hold each other as the Jewish community around the world mourns the loss of the 11 victims of this act inspired by anti-semitism? The s and text messages announcing other area observances started to arrive. "We are gathering tonight in grief and in outrage," read one of them, notifying recipients of vigils in Workmen's Circle, and another in Acton on Saturday night. Another congregant asked: Can we gather in Waltham to show our support for Pittsburgh? I forwarded the inquiry to our Vice President Dina Baker who immediately replied, "Yes." "We should." "Asap." She said, "We are the synagogue in Waltham. We can host it." That was 6:20 pm. By 10 pm, Dina, Rabbi David, and I were able to connect on the phone, and we agreed we would host an event at Temple Beth Israel. Dina compiled a list of churches in Waltham. Rabbi David reached out to his colleagues from the local clergy association. I reached out to the Bentley University community and posted information about the event on the synagogue's web page and Facebook page. In the morning, Mayor McCarthy agreed to attend and speak; Rev. Robin Olson, the Director of Spiritual Life at Bentley University told me she and Rabbi Foust were attending with a group of students; we invited her to speak as well. And Rabbi David invited his friend Padre Angel Marrero also to share remarks and prayer. Our community friends, Padre Angel, Senator Mike Barrett and Bentley Spiritual Life, Waltham News Tribune, and Discover Waltham shared their voices of support on Twitter. The power of social media, the need to support those who are shaken, and the opportunity to gather in community brought Waltham together at Temple Beth Israel. Over 150 guests including Mayor McCarthy, city councilors, city clergy, and Sen. Mike Barrett joined in solidarity, to raise each other up, to denounce anti-semitism, and to bring hope and healing. Mayor McCarthy shared greetings from the City of Waltham, w h i c h (Continued on page 5)
N o v e m b e r P a g e 5 More Mark s Remarks - An Evening of Healing and Solidarity By: Mark Frydenberg (Continued from page 4) she described as having strong ties with the Jewish community, and people of all faiths and traditions. She offered hopes for civility in government. Reverend Robin Olson from Bentley University reminded us that love will triumph, and that we are agents of peace and can influence those around us. Referencing the Tree of Life synagogue, she quoted from Jeremiah 17, Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. They will not fear; they will flourish and not be shaken." Padre Angel Marrero of the Santuario Lutherano congregation addressed those gathered to offer an expression of solidarity of his faith community with ours. He closed his remarks with a blessing that our actions and our choices build a world where Jews and all people are safe and can live in peace. Rabbi David Finkelstein invited us to cry with him for the lives lost. He praised everyone for coming together, saying, "If we don't stand in support of each other, then no one will stand for us." Quoting our sage Hillel, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" Thanks to Dina Baker for organizing this event so quickly, to Linda Ungerleider for helping with refreshments, to Andrea Baron, Susan Baron, Brad Baker, Phyllis Werlin, Mila Maystrovsky, Amy Rothman, and Zach Roe, for setting up additional chairs and greeting people. Together we shared an evening where we could reach out, be together, and support each other, be reminded that love and justice and kindness will triumph in the face of tragedy. For information on how you can assist the families of the victims and to assist with rebuilding the Tree of Life Synagogue, please visit

Noah s literary influences for the Godserfs trilogy, published under the pen name N.S. Dolkart, include the Tanakh, as well as the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. The first book, Silent Hall, assembles a diverse group of characters, refugees from their island home, which was destroyed by an angry god. Their adventures continue in Among the Fallen, and conclude in A Breach in the Heavens. Click here to read more about Noah s inspiration for his series in his guest blog for the Jewish Book Council. Noah s books are available in the temple library if you would like to borrow them.

Study Groups and Singing Circle Join Us Torah Study Group: Midrash on The Garden of Eden Wednesday mornings, 11:00am-12:30pm 12:30pm at Temple Beth Israel November 14, December 12, & January 16 With the help of Wilfred Shuchat s book, The Garden of Eden & the Struggle to Be Human According to the Midrash Rabbah, we will explore and investigate the Biblical text, practice our own rabbinic close reading skills, and explore rabbinic homilies on chapter 2 of the Book of Genesis (Bereishit). All are welcome, Jew and non-jew, veterans of midrash and beginners alike. Talmud Study Group: The Most Significant Talmudic Discussions Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:30pm at Temple Beth Israel November 7, December 19, January 9 Beginning in Fall 2008, Professor Jon A. Levisohn of Brandeis University collected 25 responses to the question, What are the Talmudic sugyot (topics or discussions) that every Jew ought to know, the most famous or significant Talmudic discussions? The sugyot were chosen for their theological and ideological significance, their contemporary practical significance, or their centrality in discussions among commentators. Or in some cases, perhaps their idiosyncrasy. In this longterm learning project, I hope to learn every one of the 67 sugyot in the list. Let s take the journey together. We ll learn slowly and deliberately, taking one discussion at a time. There s no rush. All texts will be provided in the original language (Hebrew and/or Aramaic) and in English translation. All are welcome. No prior familiarity with Talmud required. Hashmi ini Jewish Singing Circle Shabbat afternoons, 1:30-2:30pm at Temple Beth Israel November 10, December 15, January 12 Hashmi ini means let me hear from the verse in Song of Songs, Hashmi ini et qolekh, let me hear your voice. Inspired by Joey Weisenberg's book Building Singing Communities, this group offers an hour of singing wordless tunes while sitting in a circle. In each session, we learn to sing and then explore one song or niggun (wordless Jewish melody), singing it approximately ten times and in as many different ways. All are welcome: seasoned musicians, musicophobes who were scarred long ago by snooty music teachers, and everyone in between. The Singing Circle emphasizes learning, participation, and musical community over the right notes. Meetings will occur on the Shabbat afternoons listed above.
