2 Rabbi s Reflections: TBI in the Era of Trump: Love and Protect the Stranger By: Rabbi David Finkelstein What will it mean to be a good Jewish citizen in the months and years ahead? What will it mean to be a responsible, moral Jewish community? As a baseline, we will want to be sure to recognize the good. Our souls require refreshment. We need to be outside, to enjoy nature, to tell stories and to enjoy one another's company innocently and without agenda. We need Shabbat now perhaps more than ever. Every government has its strengths and weaknesses. May the blessings of the new administration be many. May we appreciate those blessings, and allow them to give us hope. On the other side, there will be problems and weaknesses in the new administration. We have already seen some of them taking shape during the campaign and during the weeks following the election, and we should ready ourselves to raise our voices to keep our leaders accountable. We will continue to pray A Prayer for Our Country, as it appears on page 415 of Siddur Sim Shalom. With you, I will ask Gd's blessings for our country, for its government, for its leader and advisors, and for all who exercise just and rightful authority. This prayer echoes the ancient Jewish wisdom of Rabbi Chaninah, who says, Pray for the welfare of the government. For were it not for the awe of it, men would swallow their neighbors alive (Avot 3:2). I will pray fervently that all the inhabitants of our country...banish all hatred and bigotry, and I will pray that the United States will be an influence for good throughout the world. May Gd bless our leaders with compassion, and may the awesome but finite responsibility given to them by the American electorate inspire them with generosity, wisdom, and courage. It is important that we prepare our hearts to pray sincerely for the welfare of the government, regardless of who is in office. Such prayers can give us strength to live in a world where our government is imperfect. And yet, even though we all need strength, some of us may have difficulty saying this prayer because of attitudes expressed by members of the incoming administration attitudes about homosexuality, people of color, Jews, Muslims. A prayer for the welfare of the government is not necessarily a prayer that the government should be unbending, unchanging or rigid. The welfare of the government depends on its flexibility, its willingness to learn and listen, its ability to grow in understanding, its ability to discern fact from fiction. That being said, praying for the welfare of the government is important but insufficient. We must also take responsibility for the welfare of our own communities. With that welfare in mind, we need to acknowledge that during this election season, some words and actions have been used that have fanned the flames of hatred and bigotry. Some in our community certainly wish us to take a public stand in favor of love and protection of the vulnerable, for with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm Gd took us out of 2

3 Rabbi s Reflections: TBI in the Era of Trump: Love and Protect the Stranger By: Rabbi David Finkelstein bondage. The mitzvah to love and protect the stranger appears more times in the Torah than any other mitzvah 36 times for we were strangers in the land of Egypt. Other more recent episodes in Jewish history reinforce our dedication to this mitzvah. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch, there has been a serious increase in incidents of hateful harassment reported in the United States since Election Day, and anti-immigrant incidents remain the top type reported. This information is especially relevant to residents of and people with connections to Waltham. Of Waltham's approximately 60,000 residents, one quarter are immigrants. Thank Gd, I have not heard of any incidents of harassment in Waltham, but that does not mean they are not happening or that they will not happen. How would you like to see Temple Beth Israel fulfill the mitzvah of loving and protecting the strangers in our midst? I encourage everyone who reads this article to write me a letter or an , to let me hear your thoughts on what might be done. For example, we might strengthen the bonds between Temple Beth Israel and other local organizations that care for immigrants, organizations like WatchCDC and the Waltham Islamic Society. I would be happy to meet you face-to-face to listen to your thoughts and concerns, including those that are not in tune with mine, to make every voice at TBI a part of the conversation. As we address the challenges of our world with pride in our Judaism and with awareness of the intrinsic value of all human beings, let us ever be refreshed by the wisdom and inspiration of our ancestors. In the first morning blessing before the Shema, known ובט וב ו creation: as birkat yotzer or, the siddur reminds us that Gd constantly renews all of In Gd's goodness, Gd renews the work of creation מח ד ש בכ ל י ום ת מיד מ עש ה ברא שית every day, always. This recent election cycle and the current transition of government have been stressful for many of our members. As we reorient ourselves and our community towards love and protecting the stranger in accordance with the mitzvot, may we all cultivate an awareness of the potential for renewal and refreshment. May we all be committed to our own health, in body and in spirit, and may all of our voices rise in song together in a chorus of love: love of Gd, love of Torah, love of the Jewish people, love of all humanity, and love of all Gd's creation. Sincerely, Rabbi David rabbidavid@tbiwaltham.org 3

5 Lighting Hanukkah Candles The hanukkiyah, or Hanukkah menorah, holds nine candles: one candle for each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, and the shamash. Use the shamash to light the other candles in your hanukkiyah. When placing candles in your hanukkiyah, first place the shamash in its holder, which usually is higher or lower than the other candles. Then place the first candle in the far-right holder. Add one candle for each night, filling the hanukkiyah from right to left. When lighting the candles, first light the shamash and then use it to light the other candles from left to right, so that you always light the newest candle first. Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, December 24. On the first night, recite all three blessings. On the remaining nights, recite only the first two blessings. On Shabbat, light Hanukkah candles before lighting Shabbat candles. Blessed are You, Adonai our Gd, Ruler of the Universe, who makes us holy with commandments, and commands us to light the lights of Chanukah. (Amen) Blessed are You, Adonai our Gd, Ruler of the Universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors, in those days at this time. (Amen) Blessed are you, Lord, our Gd, Ruler of the Universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. (Amen) 5

10 Mark s Remarks: Jingle, Sizzle, Pop! By: Mark Frydenberg each of the three three holidays. For the first time since Americans started celebrating Thanksgiving over 300 years ago, the famous November holiday coincided with the first night of Hanukkah in 2013, and "Thanksgivikuh" became an instant American phenomenon. Turkey shaped menorahs were copyrighted, crafted and sold for this once-in-a-lifetime event. People put cranberry sauce on their latkes, and two cultures collided. This year, Christmas Eve and Hanukkah overlap. Jews all over the world will light the first Hanukkah candles on Christmas Eve, December 24th, and will continue to light the menorah (plus Shabbat candles) through New Year s Eve, December 31st. The last day of Hanukkah is January 1, Amy Kritzker, owner of ModernTribe.com calls December 31, 2016 "Jew Year's Eve" as the Hanukkah menorah will be in full glow to welcome the new secular year. The ModernTribe website features "Merry Jew Year's Eve-ukkah" items including a special challah cover with the words "Jingle, Sizzle, Pop", referring to the sounds of bells, latkes, and champagne, foods symbolic of The commercialization of Hanukkah in America has a long history of its own. The ModernNotion.com website shares an account by historian Rabbi Dr. Jonathan Sarna, who tells of a member of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhood's Committee on Religion, Barbara Goodman. In 1921, Goodman convinced the national Sisterhood organization that they could "make children as excited to light the Hanukkah candles as children are excited to decorate the Christmas tree." It was her idea to begin the custom of giving gifts to children each night of Hanukkah. She urged Sisterhood to provide Hanukkah menorahs and candles to children across the country. Sisterhood offered the first Hanukkah cards in 1927 as a Jewish alternative to Christmas cards. They were a fundraiser designed to bring religious consciousness in to the home. In her book, Hanukkah in America, Dianne Ashton writes that the fundraiser was so popular, it eventually became an annual event, and became a way for Jews to acknowledge each other and their shared identity in the midst of the Christmas season. Hanukkah in America was forever changed by group of women who sought to raise Jewish awareness and they succeeded. At the end of Hanukkah, you'll have even more time to enjoy the glow of your candles on the last night of Enhancing the festivities of December 31, a "leap second" will be added to the world's official clocks to accommodate Earth's gradually slowing rotation. Clocks will go from 11:59:59 PM to 11:59:60 PM on December 31, 2016, before resetting to 12:00:00 AM on January 1, You can celebrate "Jew Year's Eve-ukkah" just a bit longer, and maybe even sing Ma oz Tzur to the tune of Auld Lang Syne. I hope your holidays jingle, sizzle, and pop! 10

January 15th 10:00am - Community Conversation: Join us to talk about future planning for the Temple. January 29th 10:00am - Jewish Genealogy Program: Flier to be sent out soon A Program For Men For more than a quarter century, I have spent a long weekend in June at a Jewish camp. At first it was Camp Tel Noar, but for the last ten-years it has been Camp Ramah in Palmer Massachusetts. It all started when I became Temple Emunah Brotherhood president and felt I should learn about what was happening in the New England Region, Federation of Jewish Men s Clubs, a group to which our Brotherhood belonged. That first year was a very positive experience and I was asked to co-chair the event next year. The weekend is as busy as you want it to be. You can participate in sports, attend lectures and services, do-your-own-thing and/or socialize to your hearts content. The food is gourmet-camp and we gather about men from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Our two speakers are scholars from JTS or the like and local Rabbis. I would like to bring a group from TBI because this is really a weekend not to be missed. What have you got to lose? The date is Thursday afternoon June 8, 2017 thru Sunday June 11 at noon. I will have details of the speakers and flyers after the new year. Feel free to talk to me about my experiences. Lester Macklin Past President, NERFJMC 15
