All the major holidays are tied to the harvests, when the weather is warmer. Even though the High Holidays are not tied to a harvest explicitly, they are no exception. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur come before the Fall harvest to indicate that our dependence on the Divine is most deeply felt as we enter the coldest season. Winter is a time of suspense, when we pray for the blessing of rain so that the springtime harvest that we celebrate on Passover might bring fullness to our bellies, to our pantries, and to our lives. During this time of snowy suspense, in between the minor holidays of Hanukkah and Purim, we mark the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat (Tu Bishvat). Tu Bishvat is Jewish Arbor Day, the birthday of the trees. In the Middle East, the sap actually flows in the trees on Tu Bishvat. In New England, we might say that the sap feels its first spark of yearning to flow within the trees. As we approach Tu Bishvat, we meditate on trees in Jewish tradition, on the menorah (which, like a tree, has branches), and we eat the fruit of trees. As we have for the past two years, Temple Beth Israel will host an Interfaith Tu Bishvat Seder and Vegetarian Potluck Dinner for our Waltham neighbors, inspired by the first trees in the Garden of Eden, when all humanity was one in the persons of Adam and Eve. Join us on Sunday, January 28, at 4:30 pm. In the meantime, let us pray to the Source of Life and all yearning, that all in our communities made be warm and safe this winter. Please continue giving winter clothes and toiletries kits to the TBI Winter Clothing drive, so that our neighbors at the Community Day Center have a safer, warmer winter, too. Happy Season of Sap that Yearns to Flow! 2 Temple Talk Mark s Remarks: A Community Conversation on Creating Sacred Space By: Mark Frydenberg In Parshat Trumah (Exodus 25:1-27:19) read on February 17, the Torah describes the steps taken to build the Tabernacle in the wilderness. In contrast, the Haftarah for that day, from the Book of Kings, talks about how King Solomon built the First Temple in Jerusalem. Together these stories tell varying approaches of building two different sanctuaries, one made of wood and another made of stone. The Torah portion describes: Tell the Israelite people to bring Me gifts; you shall accept gifts for Me from every person whose heart so moves them (Exodus 25:2). The project requires everyone to contribute. In contrast, the Haftarah relates: King Solomon imposed forced labor on all Israel. (I Kings 5:27)People were coerced to take part. In his book, The Spirituality of Welcoming, Rabbi Ron Wolfson writes The new synagogue we envision is a spiritual center for all those who set foot inside it. It is a kehillah kedoshah, a sacred community, where relationships are paramount, where worship is engaging, where everyone is learning, where repair of the world is a moral imperative, where healing is offered, where personal and institutional transformation are embraced. The times are ripe for this spiritual call. Synagogues must be a place of invitation and openness that includes engaging, uplifting prayer; institutional deepening that is possible because of an openness to change, and an ambience of welcome that creates a culture of warmth and outreach, and more. He writes that congregations are renovating their sanctuaries to enable people to be closer to the clergy, closer to the pulpit, and closer to each other, creating a closer spiritual community. Responding to community conversations during the past two years at which we discussed what we are doing well, and where we need to improve as a synagogue, now we are beginning to look at ways we might update the TBI sanctuary and furnishings. And like the building of the Tabernacle, everyone is invited to participate by bringing their ideas for what makes a sacred space, and how we can create a closer spiritual community. On Sunday, January 14, at 10 am we will gather for a community conversation about how we might create a sanctuary that reflects the kind of congregation we would like to be. What ideas can you bring to the conversation table? Please join us. Snow Cancellation Policy For weekday minyan, if Waltham schools are cancelled or delayed opening due to inclement weather, morning minyan is cancelled automatically. Decisions for cancelling Friday night or Shabbat morning services will be made by 2 pm on Friday in the event of bad weather. Check the Temple website at tbiwaltham.org or call the Temple Office at if you re not sure to listen to an updated recorded message. If in doubt, stay safe, stay warm, and stay home. Page 2

3 Join our Drive to Help Our Neighbors This Winter The Social Justice Committee at TBI is running a winter-long clothing, outerwear and toiletries drive to benefit our neighboring organization, the Community Day Center. Please bring to Temple Beth Israel: Lightly used or new winter clothing (mostly men's) Lightly used or new outerwear (boots, coats, jackets, gloves, hats and socks--mostly men's) Lightly used or new sleeping bags and backpacks Individual toiletry/hygiene kits in ziplock bags--preferred contents include a disposable razor, travel size shaving cream, hand warmers, toothbrush and toothpaste, face cloths, and travel size items such as shampoos, body wash, conditioners, and especially deodorant. (Those items many people collect from hotels are perfect!) We will collect these items and transfer them to the Community Day Center all winter, because their clients have an urgent need throughout the season. What is the Community Day Center? It's the only drop-in day shelter for the homeless in Metrowest, and it is our neighbor...on Felton Street in Waltham. Which means that many of the homeless population they serve also are our neighbors, albeit too often invisible to us. The Center opens its doors on weekdays from 12:30 to 4:30 so adults in need can have a safe place during the daytime hours to get the help and resources they need. They can eat, take a nap, participate in programs, pick up their mail, get clothing and hygiene items when available, use computers, watch TV, see a nurse and get a referral to medical services, and meet with a case manager or case worker. What's Next? In early spring, we will schedule a tour of the Center for all who are interested from the TBI community. In this way, we can see where our contributions are at work, meet some of the people benefiting, and think about how else we might partner going forward. This is the first set of items donated to Community Day Center of Waltham through the winter drive organized by TBI's Social Justice Committee. So far, we have made three deliveries to the Center during this season-long campaign. Thank you. Page 3

9 Community Conversation Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 10 am Topic: Creating Sacred Space Last January (2017) our synagogue Community Conversation focused on future directions for Temple Beth Israel, and one of the themes that emerged was that the sanctuary s dated appearance runs counter to the innovative and multi-generational community we have become. At our community meeting in June, where we discussed areas where we should put forth more resources, enhancing or adapting our prayer space in the Sanctuary was a priority for many. During the fall months, we have begun to explore options in response to this conversation. The Board has agreed to pursue a project of renovating the Sanctuary space. At this Community Conversation, we will discuss the type of prayerful space our sanctuary might become in order to transform it, and Temple Beth Israel into the future. We invite you to join us. Mussar Group: Character & Jewish Values facilitated by Rabbi David Finkelstein MEETING TIMES: January 10, February 7, March 14 always 7:00-8:30 pm at Temple Beth Israel This monthly weekday evening study and practice group uses the Mussar curriculum developed by award-winning author and Boston area Mussar teacher Rabbi David Jaffe. As the title of the group indicates, Mussar is an approach to Jewish learning and being that focuses on the observation and development of our character and our study of Jewish values. Together we will study Torah, Talmud, Mussar masters from medieval times to the 21 st century and from the Old World to the New. The initial meetings in October and November were introductory. This December, we will begin our study of spiritual character traits (middot), which is a core aspect of Mussar. There will also be time for reflection, sharing in small groups, and trying on spiritual practices. Please bring a journal to write in. Participation is open to all. If you missed the introductory sessions but you want to try it out, please contact me at rabbidavid@tbiwaltham.org. I ll catch you up so that you can join us. Jewish Singing Circle a new initiative by Rabbi David Finkelstein MEETING TIMES: January 27, February 24, March 24 always 1:30-2:30 pm at Temple Beth Israel Inspired by Joey Weisenberg's book Building Singing Communities, this Jewish Singing Circle offers an hour of singing wordless tunes while sitting in a circle. The circle will meet monthly on the Shabbat afternoons listed above. In each session, we learn to sing and then explore one song or niggun (wordless Jewish melody), singing it approximately ten times in as many different ways. In October and November, we explored one Hasidic niggun from the Bobover sect and one part of a Morris Hollender melody for the Shabbat poem (K)El Adon. In the coming months, we will learn more of the Morris Hollender melody, and I hope to bring another Hasidic niggun, too. Participation is free and open to all. Page 9

Chef s Magic - written by Lester Macklin The annual Christmas lunch and movie was attended by more than two-dozen individuals. Shopping and food preparation that was accomplished over a three-day period led to a marvelous time. The shopping was done on Thursday by the Macklins. Costco and Market Basket were routine, then to H Mart, the Asian super market in Burlington. H Mart is huge! One minor problem is the language barrier, that is, not many English words on the labels, though the hecksher appears on loads of items. Getting around this was simply finding an English-speaking individual and asking for help. We were pleased to find several such individuals who led us to the right aisle and helped find the items, even to the point of locating the hecksher before dropping it into our cart. It was about 9 PM when we delivered the food to the temple. Lucky for us, a meeting had just broken-up and Merrill, Ed and others helped carry the bags to the kitchen. Chicken and fish were stored in the freezer for overnight safety, while Mark found room in the refrigerator or cabinets for the balance of items. Sunday was labeled as cut and chop day. Under the leadership of Chef Catherine Solomon the veggies were whittled down to the proper size, mushrooms were soaked, noodles boiled, fish sliced and so on. Most important was preparing the spring rolls, a vegetable filled delicacy rolled in a dough blanket. Did I say rolled? Actually, it was a combined fold, roll and paste procedure that Catherine demonstrated and others copied. Frying was the final step for the 100 spring rolls everyone enjoyed. As it is customary to cook and then serve right away, Catherine demonstrated how to fry the fish Japanesestyle that was served with red and green peppers. The fish was another very successful item as seven-pounds of haddock disappeared in short order. The overall meal was truly delicious just ask anyone who was there! The movie, The Womens Balcony was a great choice, and our viewers reviews were all positive. For those who would like to see this movie, it was donated to our library by Ed Brown. Check it out! Many thanks to all those who worked in the kitchen: George Isaac, Ann Macklin, Ellen Macklin, Lester Macklin, Marge Marion, Marilyn Racette, Paul Smith and Chef Catherine. Finally, unlocking projector problems and the sound system was helped by Rabbi David. Again, thank you for a very tasty Christmas! Page 10
