2 Mark's Remarks: A Day to Remember By Mark Frydenberg My father was the guest speaker at our Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) event on April 15 th. Born in Poland, he worked in German Labor Camps, was imprisoned in concentration camps before being liberated in It was an honor to introduce him with these words: We are here today as a community called together to remember. Today we are here to remember the stories of a world destroyed, and the stories of how those who were fortunate enough to survive those atrocities created new lives and opportunities for themselves and their families. Many of you know that I teach information technology at Bentley University. Some of my students are here today. They were surprised when I showed up in their History of Nazi Germany class a couple of weeks ago to tell them about my father's talk. It's so important that this generation, that has grown up on Facebook and Instagram and Snapchat, and that is so busy inventing the future, takes time to learn about the past. They work for social change and know that the promise of "never again" is only a hashtag unless they act to stop future injustice in the world. They know the value of first-hand accounts and primary sources. In hearing my father's testimony today, they and all of us take on the responsibility to remember and tell these stories. When I was a child, my father rarely spoke about his experiences during Holocaust. He would tell us about his parents and siblings and the village he lived in as it was before the war. Growing up, there was no "Holocaust Memorial Day" because every day was Holocaust Memorial Day with reminders around the house the portrait of my father's sister, killed during the war, that hangs in the dining room, to the box labelled "Bernie's Old Photos." We would visit his friends in Montreal or New York, who I knew were other survivors with whom he was liberated, a group that has stayed in touch with each other throughout their lives. They were extended family. My father and I traveled to Poland in 1992 to visit his home town on a trip to eastern Europe. We visited several concentration camps and memorials, and our trip ended at Theresienstadt, where my father was liberated in I asked him what it was like for him to return here and was surprised by his response so much that I remember it to this day: "This is where I had some of my happiest memories of the war," he said. There he was liberated, reunited with his brother, and made many friendships that have endured for decades. Following the presentation, Lester Macklin, who coordinates the Temple's participation in the Yellow Candle Program, shared that TBI donated in my father's honor to Café Europa, a program of the West Hartford JCC, that provides services, lunches, social activities, and support to Holocaust Survivors. Judi Roth, a Newton resident whose father also is a Holocaust survivor Page 2

3 Mark's Remarks: A Day to Remember By Mark Frydenberg (and as she and I later learned, was among the same group of "Boys" as my father that went to England after the war) said, "It's so important for him to share what happened with as much of the world as possible. I keep thinking about so many of things that he experienced, and how amazing it is that he survived despite all the dangers and challenges he faced. And, he's a wonderful loving man with a sense of humor and great perspective and a wonderful family. The whole story is so moving." Reverend Robin Olson, director of the Spiritual Life Center at Bentley University was among the many guests in attendance. She later commented on Facebook, "Thanks to Temple Beth Israel and Bentley Professor Mark Frydenberg for inviting us to this profound gathering. Thank you, Mr. Frydenberg, for sharing your witness to resilience, loyalty, and love in the midst of the horrors of the Holocaust. His final advice shared to young people: "Get educated and treat every person with kindness and respect." Shavuot Services The Festival of Shavuot, marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, and the end of the 49 days of Omer, begins this year on Saturday evening, May 19th. The holiday continues on Sunday and Monday, May 20 and 21. Temple Beth Israel will hold an early Tikkun Leyl Shavuot the traditional evening study session and cheese cake, Saturday evening May 19, starting at 7:30 pm, followed by the evening service to begin the holiday which will begin around 9pm. Morning services for Shavuot will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 9:00am and on Monday May 21 beginning at 7 am. Because Shavuot falls on a weekday, many will be working on those days. It is important that we have a minyan at our services, especially on Monday when Yizkor memorial prayers will be recited, so those attending may say Mourner s Kaddish. Please make every effort to attend services on these days, and notify us that you are coming. Services should last approx. 2.5 hours. Blintzes will be served for breakfast after the morning services. 4 Hankus Tells His Story: Remembering Al Simon, One of our Shul s Last Links With Waltham s Immigrant Jewish Community. By Hankus Netsky It s only been a few weeks since Al Simon passed away, but it s not hard to recognize that, with his passing, the congregation lost not only a wonderful, loyal member with a great sense of humor but one of our last links to the roots of our Waltham Jewish community. This article is based on an interview that I conducted with Al at Temple Beth Israel on March 14, 2010 have done the same thing. Born in 1925, Al was the son of Carl Simon, a blacksmith from Russia. In a 2010 interview, Al told me about his father s apprenticeship in the old country where he worked for three dollars a week: My father (Carl) had been apprenticed to a blacksmith in Russia and they got into a fight after a few years because his job that particular day was to hold a white-hot piece of steel while the blacksmith banged it into the shape that he wanted and some of the hot steel got on his arm and he flinched. The blacksmith got angry and threw his hammer at him. My father ducked so it didn t hit him but, he made pair of brass knuckles and the next time it happened, he almost killed the man. Anyhow, he ran away for about a year and found out that he was crippled but still alive and they made up. He said, I don t blame you; if someone had done that to me I would Al s mother also came from Russia (from Anyapol, a small shtetl): My mother came (to Waltham) because her older brother s wife was still in Russia and had just had a baby and her older brother was here and so he bought passage (2 nd class!) for both of them so that she could help with the baby on the way over. And she got a job working in a shetzl (straw suitcase) factory. At the first place she lived she had to get out because there were too many men bothering her, because she was a nice-looking woman. Harris (Griff s) mother worked in the same factory where she worked. So she said Don t stay there, come live with us and that s how she met my father. Harris s father (Yukl) and my mother were brother and sister. They lived in Waltham and the factory was in Westborough, so there must have been a trolley line that went all the way up route 9, and ride that every day. It had to be a long day. As Al recalled, in the interview, he was the first one in his family not born in the kitchen. Instead his mother, who lived at the time on Prospect St. near the Mt. Feake entrance, walked up the hill to Waltham Hospital to have him delivered. His family was very poor in those days and Al recalled that, when his grandmother s second husband (her first husband had died) gave him three pennies for Chanukah one year, his grandmother insisted that he give the money back. Al also remembered having brawls with Anti-Semitic classmates in his early years: One time we were fighting right next to the wall at the entrance to Mt. Feake Cemetery and we both also had our own cheering sections and, my God, after a while, a teacher came by and broke up the fight and sent us both home. Al attended kheyder and attended services at TBI in its early days, upstairs in the old building Page 4

5 Hankus Tells His Story: Remembering Al Simon, One of our Shul s Last Links With Waltham s Immigrant Jewish Community. By Hankus Netsky that used to stand at the same location as our current building. Going to shul on Saturdays at TBI was also a way for the Jewish children of Waltham to form a special bond: When I would go to shul I d walk down and first pick up Henry Cantor. They lived on Felton St. Then we d meet my cousin Harris s younger brother, Meysh, so the three of us would walk into temple together. A lot of days I d walk home with Meysh, and my uncle, Hymie Weiner, had a barroom across from where Gordon s liquors used to be, and we d always stop in and say Good shabes, uncle Hymie! And, if it was raining he d say, Alec, you look kind of wet! And we were only 10 or 11 years old, but the next thing I knew he d come over with a few whiskey glasses full of brandy, and he d say I don t want you to get a cold! I also remember that we d stop at the drug store at the corner of Main and Prospect and outside there was a gum machine, and he d always stick his finger in to see if someone had paid a penny for a piece of gum and hadn t taken it and he never found one until one time on Yom Kippur and I remember he said just my luck!! Al recalled that, on Friday nights, he d attend shul with his father: My Father would always bring me to shul on Friday night and I don t know where he got the money, but he bought me a blue blazer that I only wore to come to shul. Mr. Weiner ran the Hebrew School. He was a very well-educated man. He was the Hebrew teacher, he was the shoykhet (ritual slaughterer) for the community, and I also remember that he sold eggs. They used to have wooden-slatted chairs upstairs and, in his classroom, he d always have a slat from a broken chair that he d keep in his desk drawer to whack us. On Friday night, while my father was saying hello to people, I d sneak upstairs, take the slat out of the drawer and slip it up my sleeve. Then I would sneak over to the street corner where there was a sewer, and I d shake my sleeve and make sure that the slat would go down into the sewer. And every week he d come up with a new slat! I don t know how many chairs I went through when I was in Kheyder! According to Al, Mr. Weiner s teaching was a lot of rote repetition and not too much concern with comprehension. He never translated anything into English or Yiddish and Al became disinterested in Jewish learning after his Bar Mitzvah: You knew that when you recited the Shimoneh Esrey (Amida), you were supposed to face east and keep your feet still, but that was about it. There s a joke about how the rabbi got rid of the mice he converted them to Judaism and Bar Mitzvahed them, and then they disappeared from the Temple. But, when Al was 45, his first wife passed away and he wanted to say Kaddish. On the way to work each day he got into the habit of attending minion to Temple Israel in Natick, re-learning Hebrew. With the help of Rabbi Harold Kushner, he developed a more positive association with the Jewish prayers. He very much liked the camaraderie there and, after retiring, he became a regular attendee at TBI s minion. After moving to Lasell Village, Al continued to attend services every shabes at TBI until only a month or so ago. We will all miss him - May his memory be a blessing for all of us.
