2 Trip to the Culinary Institute of America & A Tour of the Roosevelt Estate in Hyde Park Tuesday, November 5, 2002 The Fund-raising Committee is offering a very exciting opportunity to enjoy lunch at the Culinary Institute of America, a tour of the Institute and a tour of the Roosevelt Estate. The cost is $60.00, which includes the bus, lunch and the tours. Here is the menu for lunch. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS THE MENU FOR THE ENTIRE GROUP AND NO SUBSITUTIONS WILL BE PERMITTED. Appetizer: Crepes Rings au Gratin with Spinach and Ricotta Cheese Soup: Tuscan White Bean and Escarole Soup Main Course: Sauteed Hudson VaHey Chicken, whole Garlic, Rosemary, and White Wine Dessert: Italian Eggless Custard and Seasonal Fruit To make reservations, please mail your check for $60.00 to the Temple. Your check is your reservation. No telephone reservations for this trip. The deadline for reservations is October 18. The bus will leave from City Line Plaza at 8 am, Duncan Avenue and Kennedy Blvd., at 8:10 am and 10 Huron Avenue at 8:20 am. FROM THE RABBI On the morning of Yom Kippur, I invited the congregation to participate in a pilot project during which our congregation will test the new prayer book being prepared by the Reform Movement. The pilot project, originally scheduled to begin in late October, has been delayed slightly. Watch the "Temple Bulletin" for an announcement of when we will begin to use the draft of the new prayer book at our Shabbat morning services.

5 SPECIAL ADULT EDUCATION SPEAKER ON THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF CUBA In preparation for our upcoming congregational mission to Cuba, we have invited Sarah Booth, a resident of Jersey City whose family lives on Gifford Avenue, to speak to us about her recent experiences with the Jewish community of Cuba. Sarah visited Cuba to work on a documentary film on the Jews of Cuba. While we know this presentation will be of particular interest to those who will be traveling to Cuba in November, we are inviting the entire congregation to attend. The lecture will be held on Sunday, October 27, beginning with coffee and cake at 9:30 am, followed by the lecture at 10:00 am. Following the lecture, there will be a special meeting for all of those traveling to Cuba. There is no charge for this event, which is being sponsored by the Irving and Minerva Sweet Lecture fund, Reservations are required. Please call to Temple office to reserve your place, ADULT EDUCATION CLASS ON HAFTARAHS TO BEGIN Have you ever wondered what a Haftarah or Haftorah is? Have you attended Shabbat morning services and been perplexed by the reading from the prophets, which follows the Torah reading? You need no longer ask these questions. At the suggestion of one of the members of our congregation, Rabbi Brickman will lead a discussion of the weekly Haftarah reading before our Shabbat morning services beginning on Saturday, October 26 at 9:15 a.m. Our Shabbat morning Haftarah Study group will meet in the social hall until services begin at 10:00 am. Please join us for study and prayer every Shabbat morning. You will surely fmd it an enlightening and educational experience.
