2 TEMPLE TO PARTICPATE IN SRADBAT ACROSS AMERICA Save Friday evening, March 20, for the biggest, boldest organized' event ever to unite Jews across North America - Shabbat Across America. On March 20, Jews will come together to eat, drink, relax, enjoy, pray and celebrate Shabbat. Shabbat Across America is sponsored by the National Jewish Outreach Program. Temple Beth-El will be one of the over 600 congregations to celebrate Shabbat as part of this historic event. You will certainly want to be among the tens of thousands of Jews in America who will be celebrating Shabbat that evening, so clear your calendar and watch your mail for details of our congregation's Shah bat dinner and special service. Any questions, call the Temple office, PURIM IS COMING This year, Purim will be celebrated on Wednesday evening, March 11. The Temple is planning a Purim program for children of all ages. There will be a Mini-Purim Catnival for the children in our Sunday School, organized by our Hebrew School students, a Purim Pizza dinner for our Religious School students, a Megillah reading for children and adults, and of course, plenty of Haman tasch en for everyone. Purim is always a lot of fun at Temple Beth-EI, so plan to be with us to drown out Haman's name with your gregger. More details will be available in the next "Temple Bulletin." DID YOU KNOW? During Israel's 50 th year of independence, its population - which was approximately 873,000 in will reach 6 million. The event, which raised over $1,000 for the Temple, was enjoyed by nearly 50 people. The wine tasting was conducted by Jacqueline Friedrich, one of the foremost experts on the wines of the..: Loire region in France. All who attended learned much from Ms. Friedrich and enjoyed samples of a number of wines from the Loire. Our sincerest thanks to Nancy and Nathan for opening their home for this event and for contributing the wine and refreshments which were served. The Fund-raising Committee reminds all of our members that sponsoring an event at your home is a wonderful way to help our Temple. In the past, Temple members have sponsored dinners and brunches, but as you can see there are other possibilities as well. If you would like to find out how you can sponsor an event at your home to benefit the Temple, call the office, and we'll put you in touch with our Fund-raising Committee. * * * * * * * * * * * * LIBRARY CQIQIITTBE OUr Library Committee, chaired by Esther Burg, is working hard to organize the books on our shelves. The lecture will be held on Monday, February 23, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 202 of Hepburn Hall, 2039 Kennedy Blvd. Goldhagen's thesis that the average German citizen was guilty of the Holocaust, not simply a small group around Hitler and at the camps-has stirred much debate among Holocaust scholars. We are fortunate to have the opportuni ty to hear Mr. Goldhagen here in our own community, and we are sure that you will want to take advantage of this opportunity. * * * * * * * * * * * * UAHC CAllI' HARLAII TO CRT IBRATE 40th AIIlf:ryKRSARY On May 15-17, 1998 UAHC Camp Harlam will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary. 5 TUDENTS & PARENTS LEARN ABOUT SHABBAT On Sunday, February 1~ our Religious School students and their parents participated in a Family Education Program about Shabbat. Led by Rabbinic Intern Andrew Davids, the children and parents began with a rousing game of "Family Feud." Then, while Andrew and the parents considered ho~hey might enhance their Sabbath observance and spend more quality time together as a family, Rabb{ Brickman and the children baked challah. Everyone enjoyed the challah as a snack that morning, and the leftovers were served the following week at the Kiddush after our Shabbat morning service. The program ended with a beautiful Havdalah service. Thank you to Andrew Davids and Rabbi Brickman for planning this very informative and fun morning of family education. Tt~LERECOGNUEDBYCOUNTYEXECUTnffi At our annual service of tribute to Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr., Hudson County Executive Robert Janiszewski presented our congregation with a certificate of recognition. "Citing Tem~le Beth-EI's annual King Service, the County Executive honored the congregation for community service in the cause of justice and equality."(from "The Jersey Journal") Temple Beth-EI can be proud bfthis recognition. Credit should be given to those who were instrumental in initiating this annual service of tribute to Dr. King - our Rabbi Emeritus, Rabbi Samuel Berman, as well as Morris Pesin and Milton Gottlieb, both of blessed memory, who served as Chairmen of this event for many years. Though Mr. Janiszewski presented the certificate at this year's service, surely it was intended to recognize our Temple's efforts for the past 13 years during which we have held this tribute to Dr. King. Special thanks to Irwin Rosen who arranged for this year's speaker, Mr. Ted Brunson, and to all of those who attended the service on what was the most inclement night of the entire winter.
