September 22 nd , :00 a.m. Second Day of Rosh Hashanah PRE-SLICHOT CONCERT AND SERVICE On Saturday evening, September 12, we will hold our SHchot Service in preparation for the High Holy Days. This beautiful service, which sets the mood for the penitential season, will be conducted by Rabbi Brickman and Cantor Schwartz. The service will be preceded by a social hour and a special concert beginning at 8:30 p.m. The concert will feature Lena Schwartz, wife of our Cantor Sergei Schwartz. Lena Schwartz graduated from the Odessa Conservatory majoring in violin. As a child prodigy, Lena was a Laureate of many national competitions, and soloist with many orchestras in the Ukraine. In 1990, Lena immigrated to Israel where she graduated from the Rubin Academy ofmusio in Jerusalem, majoring in violin performance. In 1993, Lena joined the Jerusalem Chamber Orchestra, and was invited to be the principle viola in the Europe Young Symphony Orchestra, which toured throughout Europe. For our per-selichot concert, our organist will accompany Lena on piano. We are certain that you will not want to miss this special musical prelude to our Slichot Service and the servioe, itself, both of which are Sure to help us prepare for the coming ''Days of Awe. 3 SHADDAT DINNER After the success of its Shabbat dinner last Spring, the Membership Committee decided to sponsor another Shabbat dinner as a means of bringing our members together and introducing prospective members to our congregational family. Our next Shabbat dinner will be held on Friday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m. The price is $18.50 per person, which includes a contribution to ''MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger." There is no charge for children under 13 years old. Reservations are required and must be made by calling the Temple office before September 14. Friends and neighbors are invited to join us for dinner, so please spread the word. If you are unable to attend the dinner, feel free to join us for our Shabbat Service at 8:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. For more information, or to make your reservations, please call the Temple office at TEMPLE MEMBER EXHIBITS PAINTINGS AT CITY HALL Temple Beth-EI member, Sol Swedloff has been honored by being invited to present a solo exhibit of his works at the Rotunda Gallery in Jersey City's City Hall. The exhibit will consist of a retrospective of Sol's works ranging from realism to surrealism. The exhibit will run from August 31 through September 25. Congratulations to Solon this honor. We hope that the members of the Temple will make sure to visit the exhibit of Sol's paintings at City Hall. If you have clothing to donate, please call Esther Burg at READ HEBREW AMERICA For those who have never learned how to read Hebrew or those who could use a little review, the Temple will be o ffering a 5 week Hebrew minicours e. The course will be taught by Rabbinic Intern Lisa Izes beginning on Wednesday, October 28 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Temple Library, and will continue for 5 weeks c oncluding on Wednesday, Dec ember 2. The class will not meet on Wednesday, Novmber 25, which is the night before Thanksgiving. The Temple's Hebrew course is being o f fer e d a t no charge as part of a nati onwide effort to increase Hebrew li.teracy sponsored by the National J ewish Outreach Program. More. details will be available in future issues of the "Temple Bulletin," but if you have any quest ions please speak to Student Rabbi Izes or Rabbi Brickman. Make this the year you learn to read Hebrew. If you take the course, we guarantee you will be able to read the Chanukah blessi ngs and participate more fully in our services, as we l l. HIGH HOLY DAY CHILDREN'S SERVICES We wil l be holding special services for children on the first day of Rosh HaShanah and on Yom Kippur. The services, which will be led by members of the congregation, will begin at 12 noon amd will be held i n the Nickelsporn Social Hall. The conclusion of the children's service on Rosh Hahsanah will coincide with the beginning of our Shofar Service in the Sanctuary, s o that the children will be able to join us to hear the sounding of the Shofar.

6 WELCOME CANTOR SCHWARTZ AND RABBINIC INTERN IZES The Temple is pleased to welcome two new members to our professional staff. Cantor Sergei Schwartz is a third year student at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, School of Sacred Music. Cantor Schwartz was raised in the Ukraine, where he received his degree in Choral conducting and served as the conductor for a number of choirs. Cantor Schwartz was also the co-founder and a leader of one of the new Jewish congregations established in the Ukraine in the post-gorbachov era. After immigrating to Israel in 1990, Cantor Schwartz earned another degree in music from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem. He also sang with the choir of the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem and toured with the choir throughout North America and Europe. Since coming to the United States, Cantor Schwartz has served as the Summer Cantorial Intern at Congregation Adas Israel in Sag Harbor and the Student Cantor of Temple Emanuel in Baltimore. We are thrilled to be welcoming Cantor Schwartz, his wife Lena and their son Ziv to Temple Beth-El. Lisa Izes, our new Rabbinic Intern, is a fourth year student at the Hebrew Union College.- Jewish Institute of Religion. Student Rabbi Izes earned her Bachelors Degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in American History. Student Rabbi Izes, who was raised in Westchester, New York, has taught religious school in a number of congregations in our area, including Woodlands Community Temple in Hartsdale, New York and Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Manhattan. Most recently, Student Rabbi Izes served as the rabbi of Temple Beth-EI in Bradford, Pennsylvania, where she led services, coordinated the religious school and taught adult education classes. We are very excited to have Student Rabbi Izes as our new Rabbinic Intern.

If you do not own a set of prayerbooks, please contact the Temple office to purc~ a set. The cost is $5.00. Prayerbooks must be purchased prior to Rosh Hashanah, because they will not be available at services. HIGH HOLY DAY BABY"SITfING We will be providing baby-sitting at the Temple during the High Holy Days. Baby sitting will be available on the morning of the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur morning. If you are interested in our baby-sitting services on either or both of these occasions, please call the Temple office at There is no charge, however, reservations are required so that we will be able to provide proper supervision. ROSH HASHANAH CARDS FOR SALE New Years cards are still available in the Temple office. A package of 5 beautiful, full-sized card$ is only $5.00. Send your good wishes for the New Year to family and friends and support our Temple at the same time.
