2 Special Services to be Held Holocaust Memorial Day will be observed throughout the Jewish world on Sunday, April 22. We will commemorate this solemn occasion at our Shabbat Service on Friday, April 20. Rabbi Brickman and Cantor Webber will present a special program of music and readings. This year, Israel Independence Day is celebrated on Monday, April 30. Temple Beth-EI will celebrate Israel's 42nd birthday at our Shabbat Service on Friday, April 27. Violet Zall-Hordes Lecture Sunday, April 29, : 30 a.m. Our speaker for the Violet Zall-Hordes Lecture will be Judge Jerome Hornblass, a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court since Justice Hornblass is also associate professor of sociology at City College and teaches at the New School for Social Research. He is an active participant on the Religious Dialogue Committee of the American Jewish Committee. Justice Hornblass is on the Board of Advisors to the Jewish Law Institute of Boston University Law School and serves as president of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists. Justice Hornblass will address some of the ethical issues facing our legal system today. 5 At the Newport Interfaith Center The Newport Interfaith Center has just begun its second year of operation. The Center is a cooperative effort among 6 religious communities in Jersey City, including our Temple, which bring religious activities to the residents of the Newport complex. This cooperative spirit was exemplified beautifully by the Interfaith Model Passover Seder which Temple Beth-El sponsored on Sunday, April 1. Thirty-five Christians and Jews gathered for a model Passover seder conducted by Rabbi Brickman and Cantor Webber. While our congregation's main focus at the Center is to introduce Temple Beth-El to the Jewish residents at Newport, we also look forward to continuing to share our Jewish tradition with our non-jewish neighbors. Adult Education Rabbi Brickman will resume his Monday morning Adult Education classes on Monday, April 23 at 10 : 00 a.m. in the Library in the Temple House. Together with the Rabbi, the class will read and study the "Pirke Avot-the Sayings of our Ancestors. II The "Pirke Avot" is a compilation of ethical teachings found in the Mishnah. The class will meet every Monday morning, however, each class will be a self-contained unit, so please feel free to join us whenever you are available. Condolences The Rabbi, Board of Trustees and members of the Congregation note with sadness the passing of Gertrude Levey and Birdie Furshman, and extend heartfelt sympathies to their families. May cherished memories be a source of comfort and consolation.
