1 Young Israel of Greater Cleveland December 2017 Newsletter-Kislev/Teves 5778 From the Rabbi s Shtender Dear Member, I hope winter is going well so far. There are two Young Israel events that are coming up very soon that I would like to highlight: 1. Scholar-in-Residence Shabbos with Rabbi Dr. Shnayer Leiman 2. Young Israel s Annual Chanukah Party This year we will have the pleasure of hosting Rabbi Dr. Shnayer Leiman for Shabbos, December 1-3. Please see the flyer on page 4 for details. Rabbi Dr. Leiman has graced our community and shul in the past. He is a fantastic scholar, Talmid Chochom, and historian. Please make an extra effort to attend some or all of his presentations. All of Rabbi Leiman s lectures will take place at the Stone Synagogue. In addition, we will have our annual Chanukah party this year at the Hebrew Academy branch on Sunday, December 10. It is for our entire shul, and we hope you will attend for a night of fun and entertainment. Please look at our flyer on page 5 for more information. Have a meaningful and enjoyable Chanukah. 6 TRIBUTE DINNER Young Israel of Greater Cleveland - December 2017 Page 6 SHACHARIS TIMES FOR CHANUKAH Wed.-Fri., Dec Stone Syn. *6:40/7:50 am HAC *6:40 am Sun., Dec. 17 Stone Syn. 7:15/8:00/8:30 am HAC 7:10 am Mon. & Tues. Dec. 18 & 19 Stone Syn. *6:40/7:40 am HAC *6:40 am (Rosh Chodesh) Wed., Dec. 20 Stone Syn. *6:40/7:50 am HAC *6:40 am *Put on Tallis & Tefillin after Yishtabach CHANUKAH HALACHOS The entire Hallel prayer is recited on all eight days of Chanukah. Al HaNissim is recited during the Shemona Esray and Birchat HaMazon; if one forgets to say it, it is not necessary to repeat either prayer. The lights of the menorah should be set in a straight row, with the exception of the shamash, which should not appear to be in the same row as the others. On each night of Chanukah another light is added, going from right to left. It is preferable to use oil for the Chanukah lights, especially olive oil, although wax candles are also usable. The menorah should be kindled in the place where one intends to leave it. It should be placed where it will be visible from outside the house. If one is afraid that children may be endangered by such a location, it can be placed in a safer location, even if that means that it will be visible only to members of the household. The menorah should be lit at nightfall (42 minutes after sunset), although one is permitted to light it at sunset. In either case, there should be enough oil present initially to burn until 30 minutes after nightfall. If the flames go out before that time (even though there was enough fuel initially) it is preferable to relight them. On Friday the menorah is lit before the Shabbos candles. There should be sufficient oil (or sufficiently large candles) to remain burning until 30 minutes after nightfall. The conventional chanukah wax candles would not suffice for Friday evening. If the flames go out after Shabbos begins, do not relight them. On Saturday night, the menorah is lit at home after Havdalah. One should not begin a meal or do work after the time for lighting the menorah until it is lit. The first night, three brachos are recited; on the other nights only two are recited. The Chanukah lights should not be used for reading or any other purpose. The mitzvah of lighting Chanukah lights is one of the most beautiful mitzvos we have. Let us hope that our kindling them adds light to the world.
7 Young Israel of Greater Cleveland - December 2017 Page 7 SWITCHING TO V'SEIN TAL UMATAR Beginning with Maariv on Monday night, ותן טל ומטר December 4, 2017 (v'sein tal u'matar) replaces ותן ברכה (v'sein bracha) in the blessing of Boreich Oleinu in the Shemonah Esray. If one forgot to make this change, the above phrase may be added in the bracha of shema koleinu before the phrase "ki atoh shomeiah". If one completed the Shemonah Esray without making the appropriate change the entire Shemonah Esray must be repeated. IMPORTANT WINTER SHACHARIS REMINDER The earliest time one may put on Tallis & Tefillin is from a time called Mi-She-Yakir, which is approximately one hour before sunrise. For those davening at our earlier minyanim (6:40-6:45 am), the two recommended solutions to this problem are as follows: Begin Shacharis and wait to put on Tallis & Tefillin after Yishtabach (except for the Shliach Tzibur who puts them on before Yishtabach) Put on the Tallis & Tefillin before davening without a bracha and after completing Yishtabach move the Tallis and Tefillin slightly and recite the bracha ASARAH B'TEVES The Tenth of Tevet, Thursday, December 28, 2017 is a fast day. On this day, the wicked Nevuchadnetzar, king of Babylonia, approached the city of Yerushalayim, laid siege to it and eventually crushed it. This led to the eventual destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash. The fast begins at 6:39 am and ends at 5:46 pm. Although the fast does not officially begin until morning, one who intends to eat or drink before 6:39 am should have this in mind before going to bed the night before. Otherwise, we assume that an unofficial acceptance of the fast and its accompanying restrictions have begun when going to sleep the prior evening. At Mincha, the traditional Krias Hatorah and Haftorah for a fast day are read. Fast begins: 6:39 am Shacharis: Stone Synagogue *6:40/7:40 am HAC *6:40 am Mincha : 4:45 pm. Maariv: 5:30 pm. Fast ends: 5:46 pm *Put on Talis and Tefillin after Yishtabach
8 TRIBUTE DINNER Young Israel of Greater Cleveland - December 2017 Page 8 Some people have a tradition to add a short prayer before lighting the Chanukah candles. The prayer goes as follows: By merit of the mitzvah of the Chanukah lights, may there be fulfillment of the promise: My word shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouths of your children and children s children, from now unto all eternity. We pray that our children and descendants be spiritual people, living and loving the word of Hashem. Values are transmitted not by teaching or preaching, but by example. Children will usually respect what they see their parents hold dear. Lighting the Chanukah menorah should not be a mere ritual, but a dedication to the ideals of the Macabees self sacrifice for one s faith, in the realization that a life devoid of spirituality is not worth living. KOLLEL CORNER For those interested in a chavrusa at night, please contact the Rosh Kollel, Rabbi Baum ( ).
