Laws and Customs Bedikas Chametz On the 14 th of Nissan, the night before Pesach, one is required to search their house for Chametz. One should clean before this checking. The custom is to place 10 pieces of bread around the house before the searching begins. (This is done by someone other than the one checking, if possible.) The reason for this custom is that since we recite a bracha over the searching on the burning of the chametz, we are worried that if you don t find any chametz, it will be a blessing in vain. One must check the entire house (closets, under beds, under couch cushions, etc.) with a candle (or flashlight). Simply collecting the 10 pieces of bread does not fulfill the obligation. After one completes this, the bitul (nullification) is recited. This bitul (nullification) is called Kol Chamirah and can be found at the beginning of the Haggadah. Fast of the First Born The morning before Pesach, the14 th of Nissan, is the Fast of the First Born. The reason for this fast is because the first born Jews were saved during the 10 Plagues. This applies to a first born from either the father or mother. A father must fast for his first born son under Bar Mitzvah age. The custom is for the first born to attend a Seudas Mitzvah (Bris, Siyum, etc.) and then they may eat. A first born who is unable to attend a Seudas Mitzvah must fast. Biur Chametz- Burning the Chametz- On the 14 th of Nissan, one must get rid of or destroy all chametz. The custom is to burn all chametz that has not been sold. Bitul Chametz- Nullification of Chametz- After the burning of the chametz, all chametz is declared ownerless. Mechiras Chametz- There are two prohibitions against owning chametz on Pesach. One may sell their chametz (and the area it is in) to a non-jew. The custom today is that one appoints the Rabbi as his/her agent to sell the chametz. This sale takes place the morning before Pesach. (This year it is Wednesday morning.) Those cabinets / closets in which the chametz is place may not be opened until after Pesach. On Erev Pesach, one may not eat Matzah all day (until the Seder). After the 4 th hour, chametz may not be eaten. (See Schedule) One should buy his wife jewelry or new clothing to enhance the Yom Tov.

Eruv Tavshilim When Yom Tov precedes Shabbos, an Eruv Tavshilim is made. One takes one baked and one cooked item and the bracha is recited. (See Artscroll page 654) This shows that preparation for Shabbos has begun and that on Friday, we can continue to prepare for Shabbos. The Eruv food items are eaten on Shabbos. The Seder There are five mitzvos on the night of Pesach: 1. Eating Matzah 2. Telling the Story of the Exodus 3. Drinking Four Cups of Wine 4. Eating Maror 5. Reciting the Hallel 1. Eating Matzah- One must eat an olive s volume of matzah on the night of Pesach. There are three times during the Seder that we eat matzah: Motzi Matzah, Korech and Afikoman. The matzah eaten at the Seder to fulfill these mitzvahs must be Shmura Matzah, matzah that was watched and baked for the purpose of this mitzvah. One may use Hand Shmura or Machine Shmura. Here are the appropriate amounts to use: Motzie Matzah Korech Afikomen Hand Shmura 7 x 6, about ½ 4 x 7, about ¼ 7 x 6¼, about ½ Machine Shmura 2/3 1/3 2/3 If one is unable to eat these amounts, the Rabbi should be consulted. Ideally, the matzah should be swallowed at once or within two minutes. If one can not do this, one can eat this amount within nine minutes. The matzah, all three times, is eaten while leaning to the left. 2. Telling the Story of the Exodus- This is the main body of the Haggadah, the Maggid section. It is praiseworthy to spend a lot of time explaining and discussing the story.

3.The Four Cups of Wine- One has to drink four cups of wine, while leaning to the left, at the proper time in the Seder. The amount one must drink is the majority of a cup that holds at least 3.3 ounces. (If the 1 st Seder is Friday night, the first cup should have 4.4 ounces.) It is preferable to drink the whole cup. It is also preferable to use wine instead of grape juice. 4. Eating Maror- One has to eat maror the night of Pesach. The maror is taken and dipped in charoses. The charoses is then shaken off. The two common items to use for maror are grated horseradish or romaine lettuce. One must be sure that there are no bugs. (Bugs are commonly found on the lettuce; therefore the lettuce must be soaked and checked.) If one uses grated horseradish, the amount should be 1.1 ounces. If one uses romaine lettuce, it should cover 8x10 inches. If one uses the stalks from romaine lettuce, it should cover 3x5 inches. Maror is NOT eaten while leaning. 5. Reciting the Hallel- One is required to recite the full Hallel as praise and thanksgiving for the miracle of the Exodus. Various Halachas of the Seder The first time we wash, Urechatz, we do not make a bracha. At Karpas, the dipping of the vegetable, when one makes the bracha over the vegetable; one should have in mind the maror. Because maror is not usually eaten as part of a meal, the HaMotzi does not cover it. The custom is not to eat roasted meat during the Seder. The Afikomen must be eaten before midnight. (See Schedule)

For the Sake of Unity in Support of Israel Over 13,000 American citizens -- including 2000 college students -- participated in the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC) Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. on March 3-5. Approximately 200 hailed from Dallas, and another 300 from other Texas cities. Participation requires serious commitment: the conference fee is $599, participants provide their own transportation and housing, and you miss at least two full work days. Register ( before March 18 to join us at AIPAC Policy Conference on March 2-4, 2014 and receive a discount of $200, thus paying $399/person. You are essentially reserving your discount, and can cancel the registration and receive a full refund until January 10, AIPAC has established a spectacular record in furthering joint U.S./Israel relations, and each of us should give the highest priority to considering our own personal participation. The three-day non-partisan conference presents the following major opportunities: 1. Plenary Sessions -- Every day there are one or two plenary sessions for all participants. The speakers include luminaries of both the United States and Israel -- political, military and business leaders of the first rank. 2. Break-out Sessions -- Hundreds (literally) of smaller special-interest sessions led by experts and principals covering a wide range of subjects. For example, a session on Iron Dome was led by its developer Brigadier General Daniel Gold. At these sessions, there is much audience participation, including the opportunity for direct questions and answers. 3. Lobbying -- On the final day of the conference participants flood onto Capitol Hill to lobby Congress. This critical activity puts feet on the ground to back up words. The privilege, opportunity, and impact of meeting with our representatives translates ideas to action.

March 13, 2013 / 2 Nissan 5773 Dear Friends: The National Council of Young Israel has long led the fight to commute the sentence of Jonathan Pollard. In its most recent issue, Time Magazine lists Pollard as one of the three main issues that will be discussed between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu. Time Magazine: Talking Points What Bibi and Obama must address in Israel The U.S. President will meet with the Israeli Prime Minister later this month, after Israel has formed a new coalition government. By Andrew Katz and Dan Macsai - Time Magazine [print ed. page 8] - March 18, 2013 Nuclear Iran The Obama administration says it s ready to negotiate with Ira to stymie its nuclear ambitions (although military options are still on the table). Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu insists that words and sanctions will not stop Iran and the U.S. should do more to address Israel s concerns. Push for Peace Israel s settlement construction on the West Bank has been suspended ahead of Obama s visit. But the President who has openly criticized these expansion efforts, could insist that the temporary freeze be made permanent to revive the moribund peace process. Release of Jonathan Pollard Some U.S. law makers and Israeli officials have lobbied to free the American spy sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for gathering intelligence for Israel because of his declining health. But the White House remains wary of that option, even as the possibility of parole looms, and an online petition for a pardon has garnered 100,000 signatures and counting.

Video: Esther Pollard's Heartfelt Appeal to President Obama - Israel Channel 2 TV Recently, The National Council of Young Israel released the following statement: YOUNG ISRAEL LAUNCHES "CALL FOR CLEMENCY CAMPAIGN" FOR JONATHAN POLLARD IN ADVANCE OF PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ISRAEL TRIP Now Is The Time To Call The White House! "Call for Clemency Campaign" Gets Underway - Call the White House at Today! With President Obama set to make his first visit to Israel as President on March 20th amidst a groundswell of support for Jonathan Pollard's release, now is the time to call the White House and urge the President to commute Pollard's sentence to time served. Next month, on April 8, 2013, Jonathan Pollard will have spent 10,000 long and lonely days in prison. Although the "Call for Clemency Campaign" is an initiative of the National Council of Young Israel, it is supported by Jews throughout the United States, as evidenced by the growing calls for President Obama to commute Pollard's prison sentence. There has been a flurry of activity in recent weeks relative to the plight of Jonathan Pollard, as Prime Minister Netanyahu, President Peres, the leaders of every major political party in the Knesset, and U.S. government officials, legal professionals, and religious groups have all called for Pollard's release, as has the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. As part of the "Call for Clemency Campaign," people across the United States are encouraged to call President Obama and request the release of Jonathan Pollard and to tell the White House that 28 years in prison is more than enough. People can contact the White House between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM EST at

Everyone is urged to participate in this national grassroots effort starting today, by calling the White House and urging President Obama to free Jonathan Pollard. Tell the President that releasing Jonathan Pollard would end an injustice. Please encourage your family and friends to call today. Pollard has spent 28 years of an unprecedented life sentence in a federal prison for passing classified information to Israel, an ally of the United States. The median time served for this offense is 2 to 4 years. No one else in the history of the United States has ever received a life sentence for this offense. Pollard and the Government of Israel have both apologized and expressed remorse for their actions. Calls for Jonathan Pollard's release intensified in recent months in light of the revelations stemming from the recently declassified CIA damage assessment in the Pollard case. The CIA document disclosed that Pollard spied for Israel, and did not spy against the U.S. The report also stated that Pollard received a life sentence not because of the damage he did, but because he gave an interview to journalist Wolf Blitzer of The Jerusalem Post in The government used the interview, which could not have been done without government approval, to push for a different sentence than the plea bargain required without negating the plea bargain. It is unethical for the government to say he violated the plea agreement to obtain a harsher sentence for Pollard without throwing out the terms of the agreement that were beneficial to the government. Further, such actions by the government is a disincentive for others giving classified information to plea bargain because of their lack of confidence that the government would comply with their promise concerning what sentence the plea bargainer would receive. Such a situation could hurt U.S. security, as a failure to agree on a plea bargains would lead to trials that could lead to the release of information that the U.S. Government would prefer to remain classified. During a visit to Israel with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations last month, National Council of Young Israel President Farley Weiss raised the issue of Pollard's release publically with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro, drawing applause from his fellow Jewish leaders when he did so. In just one month, an online Israel-based petition calling on President Obama to free Jonathan Pollard has garnered over 120,000 signatures. The petition will be hand-delivered to the President when he arrives in Israel on March 20th. The major decision makers who were intimately involved in the Pollard case and who were most informed on the impact of Pollard's actions have issued public calls for his release, including former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Senator David Durenberger, who served as Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence at the time of Pollard's conviction, former Congressman Lee Hamilton, who served as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee at the time of Jonathan Pollard's sentencing, former Assistant Secretary of Defense Lawrence Korb, and former National Security Advisor Robert McFarlane, who served under President Ronald Reagan at the time when Pollard was investigated and ultimately charged with disclosing classified information to an ally without intent to harm the United States. McFarlane called Pollard's sentence "a great injustice" and stated that it was only due to former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger's "unbalanced" views regarding Israel and his "deeply held animus toward the State of Israel."

In addition, former CIA Director James Woolsey, former Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Senator Dennis DeConcini, former White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum, and former Deputy Attorney General and Harvard Law Professor Philip Heymann, each of whom reviewed the classified intelligence reports about the Pollard case, have publically called for Pollard's release. In addition, some of the other prominent American leaders who have called for clemency for Pollard include Republican Senator John McCain, Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Vice President Dan Quayle, and former Attorney General Michael Mukasey. There have also been numerous bipartisan calls for Pollard's release that have emanated from Congress and numerous former Senators.. "Prime Minister Netanyahu, President Peres, and Israeli leaders from across the political spectrum have come together to issue a strong and unified appeal for Jonathan Pollard's release," said NCYI President Farley Weiss. "The National Council of Young Israel echoes their plea and wholeheartedly endorses the Israeli government's calls for clemency for Jonathan Pollard. After nearly 10,000 days, it would be completely unjust for Jonathan Pollard to spend even one more day in prison. We need to let the White House know that American Jewry stands firmly behind Israel's calls for Pollard's release." Call the President at and ask him to free Jonathan Pollard. Tell him that 28 years in prison is more than enough!
