פסח תשע ד BZAEDS HAGGADAH FAVORITES: 2014/5774 Oldies and goodies that we all know and love Shalom Parents and Friends, Here are the various brachot, songs and sections of the Haggadah that your children have learned and are learning. You can count on them being able to join in at your Seder for the ones listed in their grade level, plus whatever was learned in earlier years. Be prepared--they just might teach you a new melody or a song that isn t in the official Haggadah but that was part of their class Pesach celebration. And, there may also be tunes that are favorites in your family that they don t know. Don t worry--it s all kosher for Pesach! Enjoy and Have a Happy Passover! חג פסח שמח - Sameach Chag Pesach KEY to the Pesach perplexed as you read this note: - items in BLACK type are found in the Haggadah, - items in GREEN are other songs that are related to Pesach themes, - items in BLUE are new parts of the Haggadah added to previously learned parts N/JK: The focus in JK and Nursery is the story of Passover. The children are learning about the life in Egypt, and the exodus from slavery to freedom. The all learn the four questions and a couple more traditional Passover songs. In JK they become familiar with the Haggadah by creating their very own Haggadah with each of the 15 steps of the Seder. Oh listen king Pharaoh The frog song Make charoset, chop, chop, chop The Seder plate Dayenu - chorus, first and thirteenth stanza Welcoming Elijah - Eliyahu Hanavi, Eliyahu Hatishbi, Eliyahu Hagiladi (first part) גן SK: In SK our focus is the order of the Seder. The children learn that Seder means order in Hebrew. They learn that the Haggadah, besides helping us tell the story of Passover, also helps us know the order of the Seder. We talk about the steps of the Seder, learn the brachot (blessings) in the special holiday tune and talk about the special Passover foods.
[Bracha = blessing] *Simcha rabbah, Simcha rabbah... - spring song Bracha for candle lighting - l hadlik ner shel yom tov - Using the unique holiday tune The order of the Seder - Kadesh Urhatz Bracha for wine/grape juice - boree pri ha-gafen Shehechiyanu bracha - shehechiyanu v kiymanu, v higiyanu la-z man ha-zeh Bracha for karpas/dipping in salt water - boree pri ha-adama Dayenu - chorus, first and thirteenth stanza 2 Brachot said before eating Matzah - ha'motzi lechem min ha-aretz and al achilat matzah Welcoming Elijah - Eliyahu Hanavi, Eliyahu Hatishbi, Eliyahu Hagiladi (first part) *Who knows one? - English version, with motions כתה א 1st Grade In 1st grade we focus on the four names of the holiday, emphasizing the origins and significance of each name. Chag HaPesach, Chag HaAviv, Chag HaCherut and Chag HaMatzot. We learn how these four names and their manifestations are embedded within the story of the holiday and in the customs and mitzvot. We prepared for the Seder in the classroom by singing the songs found in the Haggadah and in our Tal Am curriculum in Hebrew, as well as some new versions in English.
[Bracha = blessing] 4 names for Pesach- Song from Hebrew curriculum Bracha for candle lighting - l hadlik ner shel yom tov The order of the Seder - Kadesh Urhatz Bracha for wine/grape juice - boree pri ha-gafen Shehechiyanu bracha - shehechiyanu v kiymanu, v higiyanu la-z man ha-zeh Bracha for karpas/dipping in salt water - boree pri ha-adama The Aviv Song- Tal Am curriculum Simcha Rabba - Israeli song Avadim - Tal Am curriculum The 10 plagues - Tal Am version Dayenu - chorus, first 3 verses. We also focus on the story of Moshe (Moses) and B nai Yisrael (the Jewish people) as told in the Torah. Moshe s family - which we call the Levi family, because they came from the tribe of Levi Shata Shata Teiva Ktana - Tal Am curriculum Shir HaAvadim - Tal Am curriculum All the brachot mentioned in earlier grades - with traditional Pesach melody Ma Nishtana Avadim (slaves) compared to Bnei Chorin (free people) and the meaning of being free people today Eser HaMakot - The 10 plagues - Hebrew and English names and order Dayenu Pesach Matza U Maror - in Hebrew - (sometimes known as the Rabban Gamliel part of the seder) The students learn the meaning of these 3 important elements in the Seder and their connection to the history of the Jewish people. - going all the way back to the Torah. B chol Dor Va-dor
B tzet Israel Mimitzrayim Welcoming Elijah - Eliyahu Hanavi, Eliyahu Hatishbi, Eliyahu Hagiladi *Who knows one? - English version Echad Mi Yodeah - Hebrew version Chad Gadya כתה ג 3rd Grade The Pesach theme of third grade is Avadim Hayinu עבדים היינו - We were slaves in Egypt What does it mean to be slaves? What does it mean to be free? Third-graders also did a dance to a Tal Am song about being slaves, portraying in the choreographed movements the difference between being enslaved and being free. The 4 names for Pesach and their meaning The Seder Plate קערת הסדר - the symbolic meaning of the items on the plate Reading the story about slavery and redemption (in Hebrew curriculum) Kadesh U rehatz All the brachot mentioned in earlier grades- with traditional Pesach melody Full kiddush (not just boree pri ha-gafen) Ha Lachma Anya Ma Nishtana The 10 plagues - in Hebrew Dayenu V hi sheh-amda Pesach Matza U maror B chol Dor Va-dor B tzet Yisrael Mimitzrayim Korech - the Hillel sandwich of matzah and maror Welcoming Elijah - Eliyahu Hanavi, Eliyahu Hatishbi, Eliyahu Hagiladi Who knows one? - English version Echad Mi Yodeah - Hebrew version, up to number 5 Chad Gadya - chorus כתה ד 4th Grade To prepare for our seder we reviewed the 15 steps of the seder starting with קדש Kadesh and ending with נרצה Nirtzah. We analyzed each step to determine whether it represented slavery or freedom or both. During our seder we read and sang the passages and songs that the students had learned over the years in the Haggadah. We also did a dance about the four sons to a song from our Tal Am curriculum.
We focused especially on these sections of the Haggadah in our text study, developing new understandings: הא הלחמא עניא Ha Lachma Anya Avadeem Hayinu עבדים היינו - the story of physical slavery ארבעה בנים the Four Sons בכל דור ודור... generation Be-Chol Dor Va-Dor in every אליהו הנביא way!) Eliyahu Ha-Navi (with a guest appearance in our Seder, by the אחד מי יודע Echad Mi Yodeyah Note: In our Seder, we did all of the parts of the Haggadah listed in Grade 3 above since we do our Seder together. כתה ה 5th Grade (The Haggadah we use is A Different Night, published by the Shalom Hartman Institute) The main emphasis of our studies was preparation toward Explore the Four event The four sons The four cups The four names of the holiday The four questions In class we conducted a traditional Seder, especially inviting students to ask their own questions as we went along. We encourage this practice as one of the foundation ideas in the Haggadah is that children should be encouraged to ask questions and their parents (and other adults at the table) should respond in ways that make the story of Pesach a memorable moment of learning. The fifth grade sang and read their way through the Haggadah with passages listed in the grade levels prior to fifth grade, punctuated by their own questions and friends proposed answers. כתה ו 6th Grade (The Haggadah we use is A Different Night, published by the Shalom Hartman Institute) We studied the connection between the second book of the Torah, the Book of Sh mot, which we are studying in Tanakh, and the Haggadah. Our focus centered on the fact that our ancestors began to fulfill God s promise that B nai Yisrael, the children of Israel, would become a great nation and be redeemed from slavery. The following Haggadah texts were explored in depth: Ha Lachma Anya - why is this opening section in Aramaic and not Hebrew? The four sons - why are there these categories of children and no others? Four cups of wine - representing the 4 languages of redemption found in the והוצאתי, והצלתי, וגאלתי, ולקחתי Torah The 10 plagues - what are 10 modern plagues that exist in the world today?
The themes presented at the 6th Grade Seder : We conducted a traditional seder while focusing on several themes that were presented by the the sixth-graders. We introduced the four cups of wine and their meaning during the seder while explaining where the blessings are said in the Haggadah. Ha lachma anya - The students translated Ha lachma anya from Aramaic to modern Hebrew. They learned that the Matzah is also called lechem oni (poor bread). They introduced the three historic periods that ha lachma anya represents. The four sons - During the seder we learned about the four different personalities that the sons present. We also discussed the kind of response each son should get, based on his questions, in order to continue and study the tradition of Passover. כתה ז 7th Grade (The Haggadah we use is A Different Night, published by the Shalom Hartman Institute) The Four Sons - How are the characteristics of the four of the sons part of me? Avadeem Hayinu - What kinds of slavery exist in the world today and what should we do about it? V hi she-amda - Throughout history when have the Jews faced destruction and who are the enemies in our world today? Bracha for candle lighting - l hadlik ner shel yom tov The order of the Seder - Kadesh Urhatz Bracha for wine/grape juice - boree pri ha-gafen Full Kiddush Shehechiyanu bracha - shehechiyanu v kiymanu, v higiyanu la-z man ha-zeh Ha Lachma Anya Bracha for karpas/dipping in salt water - boree pri ha-adama The four sons - exploring visual representations of the sons and what the illustrations teach us Dayenu Pesach Matza U maror - 3 things we must mention and remember at every seder. V hi she-amda B chol Do V ador B tzet Israel Mimitzrayim - part of Hallel before the meal 2 Brachot said before eating Matzah - ha'motzi lechem min ha-aretz and al achilat matzah Bracha for Maror - the bitter herb Korech - the Hillel Sandwich of Matzah and Maror Eliyahu Hanavi *Who knows one? - English version Echad Mi Yodeah - Hebrew version Chad Gadya
כתה ח 8th Grade (The Haggadah we use is A Different Night, published by the Shalom Hartman Institute) The eighth grade Seder is special as it is the last Seder celebrated together at BZAEDS. Students are invited to reminisce and remember moments from Seders that they celebrated together in earlier years. They recall moments from Seders in which funny things happened, or when they wrote a rap song to teach about a particular part of the Haggadah. But, most of all, they see the Haggadah as an old friend and eagerly turn the pages and sing and read together. Bracha for candle lighting - l hadlik ner shel yom tov The order of the Seder - Kadesh Urhatz Bracha for wine/grape juice - boree pri ha-gafen Full Kiddush Shehechiyanu bracha - shehechiyanu v kiymanu, v higiyanu la-z man ha-zeh Bracha for karpas/dipping in salt water - boree pri ha-adama The four sons - exploring visual representations of the sons and what the illustrations teach us The passage about the Rabbis seder in B nai Brak - including R. Akiva - that continued until it was time to say the Shema of the morning service! Dayenu Pesach Matza U maror - 3 things we must mention and remember at every seder. V hi she-amda B chol Do V ador - Discussion: Why is this passage in the Haggadah? What do you think it meant at different eras in Jewish history? B tzet Israel Mimitzrayim - part of Hallel before the meal 2 Brachot said before eating Matzah - ha'motzi lechem min ha-aretz and al achilat matzah - Taste test between Handmade Round Shmura Matza and Machine Matza The bracha said in Bergen-Belsen before eating Chametz during the Shoah Bracha for Maror - the bitter herb - Taste test between a piece of real horseradish root, and jarred horseradish Korech Eliyahu Hanavi A reading commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising *Who knows one? - English version Echad Mi Yodeah - Hebrew version - all 13 verses (11 are the stars in Joseph s dream!) (NEXT WEEK--or 2--in JERUSALEM!) Chad Gadya (see closing photo on final page!)
