They're bursting with exciting stories and information all about their trip. We thank Mrs Bingle and Mr O for their organisation and attendance on this excursion. It's definitely a highlight of the school calendar and a wonderful learning opportunity for all involved. We have recently distributed the permission notes for our School Swimming and Water Safety program planned for weeks 7 and 8. All students in Kinder, Year 1 and 2 will take part in the program. If your child is in years 3-6 and has been given a permission note this means that we have identified a need for them to participate. This may be to build their water confidence and/or to work with them to confidently swimming 25 metres unassisted. If you consider your child needs assistance but didn t receive a note please contact the school. Please return these permission notes promptly. Next Monday I invite parents of our 2018 Kindergarten students to our school information session at 9:30am. 2 Interest Groups- Kindergarten in the Kitchen Garden Last week our Kindergarten students had their final kitchen garden lesson as part of their interest group rotations. They've been great little helpers assisting with weeding, planting, fertilising and not to mention their chopping skills when we cooked a delicious stir fry and quiche. Internet Safe Education- Parent Session 14 November :30pm Next Tuesday and Wednesday we will welcome Brett from Internet Safe Education to our school to speak with each class about cyber bullying and online safety. We invite all parents to attend an information session presented by Brett on Tuesday 14 November at 5:30pm. We strongly recommend your attendance at this session as it will bring to life possible online dangers and responsibilities which are part of your child's digital world. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Year 6 Farewell Enjoying the fruits of their labour! Concert Choir visit to Dorrigo MPS On Tuesday 14 November our Concert Choir will be visiting the Dorrigo Multi-Purpose Service at 10:30am to sing for the residents. The Variation to Routine note (walking note) signed at the beginning of the year covers the students for this excursion. What a wonderful activity for our students to take part in! Stage 2 Cascade Excursion 13 and 14 November A reminder that permission notes and payment should be returned to the school office by Friday 10 November. If you can offer either we would greatly appreciate borrowing the items for the night. Mini Fete Sue Phelps Ideas for the Mini Fete on Thursday 7 December are already under discussion and preparation will begin soon. Year 5/6 are very keen to be responsible for the day s activities. If you have anything to donate to the White Elephant stall please send items in to school. We will gladly accept all donations. 3 3/4 Gold Assembly 3 November2017 Year 3/4 Gold has just begun a unit of work about Celebrations. When we brainstormed we decided to investigate 4 main questions: What is a celebration? Why do people celebrate? What celebrations happen around the world? Are they any celebrations that used to be recognized but aren t now? We decided a celebration is either a festival or a feast; something that makes us feel good or helps us remember an event in the past. People celebrate to remember a sad or happy occasion from time past or to recognise a new beginning. Sometimes we celebrate being together. Many celebrations are related to religious beliefs or historical events. We often celebrate annually. We would like to share some information we have learned about some celebrations around the world. (Lucy and Jamison) Diwali is a major Hindu festival. Hinduism is one of the oldest religions of the world. Diwali comes from the ancient Indian world meaning row of lights. The festival lasts for two to five days between October and November. It celebrates Lakshimi the Hindu goddess of wealth and during the festival people decorate their homes and temples with small lamps made from baked clay. Hindus believe that the soul never dies and when a body dies, the soul is born again in another person or animal. (James, Marshall, Cooper and Jenaya) Waitangi is a Maori celebration that happens once every year on the 6 February. It commemorates the treaty that was signed in A treaty is an agreement between 2 countries. In This case it was between the indigenous New Zealand Maoris and the British government. It is important to New Zealand because it was the day that the Maori people allowed British people to live in New Zealand. It is a day of thanks given in honour of the British government signing a treaty with the Maori people. Every year it is celebrated by re-enacting the treaty on a beach. (Leo, Sam, Jackson and Jack). Judiasm is the world s oldest major religion and is the religion of the Jewish people. Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of lights. It is celebrated over 8 days beginning the 25 th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. Hanukkah celebrates the time when the ancient Jews purified the temple. The Jews celebrate Hanukkah by giving money to the poor and by lighting a candle every night during Connect with your neighbours the festival. On the first Hanukkah, when purifying the temple, a little bit of oil made a candle stay alight for 8 nights, it was believed to be a miracle. Jews and Christians share some of the same holy writing. The Hebrew Bible is what Christians call the Old Testament. The United States is home to most Jews while Israel has the second largest population. (Hayden, Chad, Teegan and Jamison) Chinese New Year is celebrated at the beginning of the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar is divided into months based on when the moon appears. Their year begins on the first new moon between January 21 and February 20. Family reunions are an important aspect of the New Year celebration. It is celebrated in China and by Chinese people around the world, lasting for 3 to 4 days. There is a parade with fireworks and dancers in costume, featuring a colourful Chinese dragon. Gifts of money in red envelopes are given to children to wish them luck and wealth in the New Year. (Tiger, Tom, Diane and Nicholas) Ramadan is a holy month of religion of Islam People. Islam is one of the major religions of the world. People who follow Islam are call Muslims. Most Muslims live in South and Southeast Asia. Ramadan is a month of celebration for when the prophet Mohammad received messages from God. During Ramadan Muslims don t eat or drink until midday and midnight. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam that Muslims follow. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islam year. A great festival is held at the end of Ramadan. (Max, Marshall K, Lucy and Cassandra) If you are fortunate enough to live with a sense of community, where you know the people who live near you, share experiences and help one another, then you'll probably agree, your life is richer for it. 4 Schoolyard Safari Interest Groups On Wednesday 1 November, Schoolyard Safari went down to Beilsdown River to take samples and look at water bugs. We met two scientists called Peter and Brendan. They helped us catch and study the water bugs. Then we caught some bugs and classified them. We found shrimps, mayflies, bloodworms and lots of other creatures. Peter and Brendan gave us tools to suck up or grab the creatures and to put them into containers. Once we had finished taking samples and putting them into containers we sat down and then Peter said that we have a very healthy river because it had some sensitive and rare creatures. Once we finished talking we went back to school and went home.
