2 tebeam / October 2018 / 2 A Word from Rabbi Sobel continued from front page est to Jews of every age and demographic and elucidating Jewish texts to make them relevant for today. He is one of America s most prolific and most-quoted rabbis, whose colleagues have called him an activist for Jewish ideas. He is also an award-winning writer and educator. His numerous books on such topics as Jewish spirituality, gender, work, Torah for teenagers, righteous gentiles, and Jewish history and thought have been published by Jewish Lights Publishing and the Jewish Publication Society. Temple Beth Am is so Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin fortunate to be joining with Temple Beth Sholom on Friday, October 7:15 PM when we host Rabbi Salkin together (at Temple Beth Am) as our Scholar-in-Residence. (See the flyer included for more details.) This special Erev Shabbat service will be part of our regular Shabbat Hall lu musical Shabbat worship experiences and will include participation with the Temple Beth Am volunteer musicians and choir. We will have your feet tapping, your fingers snapping and have your voices and hearts soaring in song and prayer in our brief service. And then, Rabbi Salkin will address our joint congregations on the topic of: Judaism Beyond Slogans. American Jews use a lot of buzz words tikkun olam, God s image, loving the stranger. But, what do those terms really mean? And, do they really imply only one point of view on those issues? You will find that Rabbi Salkin s deep intellect, his ability to shake and stir your soul with his provocative thinking will be refreshing and enlightening. What better way to begin the Jewish New Year than by growing and learning together as a combined community?! To read more of Rabbi Salkin s writing in advance, check out his blog, Martini Judaism: For Those Who Want to be Shaken and Stirred Following the service, we will have a festive Oneg Shabbat, complete with a certified bartender serving martinis. You ll have an opportunity to interact with Rabbi Salkin directly during the Oneg. We encourage you to purchase any of his books in advance (all available from Amazon), so that he will be able to sign them for you at that time. Some of his titles include: Righteous Gentiles in the Hebrew Bible: Ancient Role Models for Sacred Relationships, Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim the Spiritual Meaning of Your Child s Bar or Bat Mitzvah, The Modern Men s Torah Commentary, Being God s Partner: How to Find the Hidden Link Between Spirituality and Your Work, The JPS B nai Mitzvah Torah Commentary. (If you put Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin in the Amazon search bar, all of his titles will appear.) We hope that you ll invite your friends and join us for what promises to be an exciting, stimulating and most enlightening Shabbat experience! 4 tebeam / October 2018 / 4 Education Update JUDAISM AND LIFE Rabbi Marcie Kamerow, Director of Education On the Jewish calendar, Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the month of Tishrei; it is the kickoff to the ( Jewish) holiday season. Yom Kippur comes just 10 days later, and Sukkot another five days after Yom Kippur. Yet, amongst these holidays, we are also living our own lives. School is back in session, as is Rabbi Marcie Kamerow, MJEd soccer, and the many other commitments that fill our daily lives. It can seem that these holidays interrupt our dayto-day lives. Do I go to services or work/school? Hockey or the Sukkot celebration? I often hear people mention, my Jewish life and my normal life. I often pause to think about the meaning of this statement. Do we have one life inside the temple and completely different life outside of it? Or, do we live one life that incorporates everything together? I would like to challenge you and your children to think TBA For additional information regarding our fundraising efforts please call the temple office at GIFT CARDS TBA is currently selling gift cards to Stop & Shop and a variety of other national stores and restaurants. The cards are sold to you for face value and 5% of each card purchased is donated to TBA, at no additional cost to you. Gift cards make great gifts any time of the year. Cards are available for purchase at the temple office by cash and check only. FUNDRAISING DINNERS During the year, there will be fundraising dinners at area restaurants. The temple receives a portion of all the sales. Stay tuned for dates and times. TREE OF LIFE The TREE OF LIFE mounted on the wall of the of the temple lobby is a favorite way for members to commemorate simchas and honor family members and friends. Your gift of leaves ($300) and stones ($1000) will support continuing growth projects in the future. Pledge cards are available in the temple office. GILLETTE STADIUM PROGRAM Volunteer at Gillette Stadium for upcoming Patriot s Games. Temple Beth Am is earning $125 per person per game! Watch for more information or contact Stu Sheinhait at sshein@rcn.com or call The only requirement is that you must be 16 years old. Volunteers get pizza and soda to eat before the event. VP of Fundraising Stu Sheinhait and die-hard volunteers working the AFC Championship Game in January, The group raised several hundred dollars for TBA selling hot chocolate. They also got to watch the Patriots beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20! SMILE AMAZON You shop, Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible Amazon Smile purchases to Temple Beth Am. Amazon Smile is the same Amazon that you know. Support TBA by starting your shopping at smile.amazon.com. about the latter. I believe Judaism is something that does not just exist within the walls of a temple, but within the values we live out each day. For example, treating people with kindness (Gimilut Chasadim), giving Tzedakah, making the world cleaner and safer and so much more. While these holidays give us a reason to stop, pause, and reflect in their own time and space, they also enable us to reflect on our values and how we can live our Judaism when we are not at TBA. If you have thoughts, ideas or questions on this matter, I would love to hear from you! Speaking of our everyday lives, (at least as far as the TBA calendar goes), we kicked off our school year on September 16 with a great opening day program. (Please see pictures below). Our students had the opportunity to meet and re-meet their classmates as well as their teachers. Parents had the opportunity to have to join Rabbi Sobel in a Meet and Greet facilitated by the School Committee. Parents were also able to spend time in the classrooms at the end of each session to get to know our fantastic team of teachers and madrichim. In addition to welcoming back our K-7 students, we also welcomed back our high school students on Monday, September 17 with pizza and great learning. We are so thrilled to have our hallways filled with laughter and learning once again! Now that school has started we also have many of our wonderful programs back up and running. Our first Family Education program took place on September 23. The focus of this 6th-grade program was on the meaning of becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We also had our annual Sukkot decorating, dinner, and services. This year we were able to incorporate all of our members in the first Sukkah Palooza. If that was not enough, Simchat Torah was just a week later on September 30. Those who came danced with the Torah and saw it all unrolled. What a great conclusion to the holiday season! This past month also kicked off our Bar/Bat Mitzvah season! We will have seven of our outstanding students who will become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah this year. Mazal Tov to all! This has been a season of deep reflection and renewal. As we begin our school year, it is my hope that we will take time for reflection on the past school year and open ourselves up for all of the new opportunities that will come our way this year! Shanah Tovah U m tuka (A Happy and Sweet New Year), Rabbi Kamerow JUSTICE JUSTICE SHALL YOU PURSUE We are seeking committee members who are looking to form consensus to determine Temple Beth Am s social justice mandate. Our goals: to be inclusive of all our congregants, across the demographic spectrum to plan initiatives on the local, state, national and international level to educate, raise awareness and take action to respond to the lessons of the Torah, our Jewish tradition and the prophet s call Next meeting: TBD To RSVP or for inquiries, please contact: Social Justice Committee Co-Chairs: Sheila Statlender and Abby Wolf SocialJustice@tempbetham.org

5 5 / October 2018 / tebeam Hello TBA!YOUTH What a start to the year it has been for BATY! First off, I just want to say thank you so much for welcoming me into this position. TBA has been a lifelong part of my life and BATY is a group that is very near and dear to my heart. I am super excited for this year to be starting and cannot wait to see where BATY goes from here! The BATY-ites participated in the high Holy Day youth services. We had kids reading from the Torah, reciting prayers, blowing the shofar, and creating dvars. They were two successful and meaningful events. It is great to see the future of TBA leading us in prayer. Following the High Holy Days was Sukkot. BATY participated in the Sukkah-Palooza! We had an edible sukkah contest. It was great to see all of the designs and creativity from our youth. As for events, we actually had to postpone our first one, the Progressive Dinner. Typically, this is the first event of the year. It consists of the BATY-ites travelling to different homes for different courses of a meal. This year, with the holidays so early, we decided to postpone it and hopefully do a Thanksgiving themed dinner a little later in the year. Now for the event everyone is thinking about LEVI LEAP! Mark your calendars, NOVEMBER 3RD! Levi Leap is going to be FANTASTIC this year. Our theme is Gonna Party Like It s the 1990s. The BATY-ites are really excited for this, but we need your help! The BATY-ites are going to be making phone calls to all TBA members, asking for donations, housing volunteers, and chaperones. Please consider helping out in whatever way you can. Perhaps a donation of snacks, or an hour of your time at the event? My goals for Levi Leap attendance: 300 NFTY-ites! This is a very achievable goal, but once again, we need TBA s help! Please contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have pertaining to BATY. Find our group on Facebook, Instagram (TBA_BATY), and Snapchat (BATY_TBA). Have a great month! President s Message With a chill in the air and the leaves changing color you know it s October. How I love autumn. Of course at this time of year there s football but also baseball playoffs and the start of the hockey and basketball season. But it s not just sports happening in October. Here at TBA there is so much more. Of course there is the weekly Torah study, an opportunity to engage in study with fellow temple members. No prior background in Torah study is required. Shabbat Hall lu will resume in October. Temple members volunteer their time and skills playing their various musical instruments and add their beautiful singing voices to our Shabbat service. If you have not experienced this celebratory and uplifting Shabbat service I encourage you to do so. And if you are interested in joining our house band please let us know; we d love to have you. Or how about an evening with a scholar in residence Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin? He will speak at this Hall lu service about Martini Judaism for those that want to be shaken and stirred. Yes, there is more going on in October than just sports and at TBA we have a full schedule. Please make an effort to attend the wonderful and engaging programs planned for this glorious month. 7 7 / October 2018 / tebeam SISTERHOOD Did you know that sanitary pads and tampons are not covered by food stamps and are not provided by most homeless shelters or public schools? TBA Sisterhood did not know this until Eliza Menzel came and spoke to us at our September meeting. Every month homeless women and school girls, both sheltered and unsheltered, face the humiliating reality of no access to tampons or pads. They must choose between buying food or pads. Eliza Menzel is a senior in our religious school and is working towards completing her Girl Scout Gold Award. In researching projects where she could make a difference in our community, she learned about Dignity Matters in Framingham, a charity which collects and supplies feminine hygiene products to women and girls who are homeless or otherwise in need. After learning about this issue, TBA Sisterhood decided to partner with Eliza to collect feminine hygiene products (any type, size, and brand of tampons, pads, and panty liners). We will have a collection bin at our Kick-Off Dinner on October 11, or you can drop them off at the temple any time before then. Together, we can help thousands of women and girls in our community take back their dignity, while also helping one of our own students earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. A double mitzvah! Sobel (in partnership with the Shalom Hartman Institute) Location: Social Hall Going deeper than politics or advocacy, this Engaging Israel course reframes the discussion about the enduring significance of the State of Israel for contemporary Jews worldwide. The Shalom Hartman curriculum elevates the conversation about Israel by rooting it in Jewish values and ideas rather than in a response to crisis, exploring key questions such as: What are the benefits of Jewish sovereignty? How should a Jewish state exercise military power ethically? How can Israel create and maintain a Jewish democracy? What values should a Jewish state embody? Why should American Jewish care about Israel, and what should be the nature of our relationship with the Jewish state? This course equips participants with a quintessentially Jewish values-based vocabulary to define and articulate why Israel can and should be fundamental to our Jewish identity. This class utilizes video lectures by Rabbi Donniel Hartman and other experts. Rabbi Sobel sets the tone and the agenda for each session, we watch the lecture and then participants engage in hevruta style discussion and dialogue in dialogue and discussion using a source book provided by the Shalom Hartman Institute. (Hevruta learning = learning in pairs or groups arriving at truths that none could have achieved alone). Rabbi Sobel will then guide us to our summary and conclusion of each session.
