1 Temple Emanuel Religious School Standards Created in 5777 (2017) Hebrew Through Movement: Hebrew Through Movement is a curriculum that uses a Total Physical Response (TPR) approach to learning Hebrew. This system mirrors how we as human beings learn language in our early stages of development. Our students will become familiar with the sounds of Hebrew. We will embed the basics in their young brains as they internalize Hebrew words by responding to different commands. Additionally, this provides students with time to move and release energy in an educational way. Speaking Hebrew: Hebrew is a living and breathing language spoken by real people living in Israel! Here in Arizona, it is easy to forget this fact. Our children generally learn about Hebrew in text books and prayer books. Each year, we will encourage our children to speak Hebrew conversationally. We do not expect our children to be fluent, but we will require that they are able to exchange basic phrases. We hope that this will help build their Jewish identity and that it will help them when they go to Israel. HaSiddur Sheli: A siddur is more than a prayer book. It is a museum of Jewish history. When we have a personal siddur, it can become like a scrap book of our spiritual life. A siddur sets the journey through a prayer service. Our students prayer books will record their progress and growth throughout their time in Religious School. We will give our students siddurim in Kindergarten and they will follow our students all the way through our program. The siddurim will have prayers surrounded by plenty of blank space to be filled by our students. As they encounter each prayer, students will write the name of the prayer in Hebrew, draw an artistic representation of the meaning of the prayer, and write a translation of that prayer. Other creative insertions into the siddur are more than welcome. The siddur will have increasingly more student generated content as the years go by. The siddur will ultimately become a personal siddur of memories and of meaning. This will be another way to convey the meaning, power, and essence of prayer. Sight Words: Often also called high frequency words, sight words are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode Just as in any language, there are some words in Hebrew, and especially in Hebrew liturgy, which are worth committing to memory. Each year in school we will add a few sight words to the program. Vocabulary: Our objective is that students will have a meaningful Hebrew vocabulary. Our goal is depth over breadth. Our students will encounter countless Hebrew words over the course of their years here and throughout their lives. Nevertheless, we have prioritized 5-10 new words per year that we expect the children to demonstrably know and retain over the years. We want them to know these selected words inside and out. A student who goes all the way through our program should know these words so well that they can use the words in their everyday speech, fluently read the words, and tell others what the words mean in English. Prefixes and Suffixes: Prefixes and suffixes are essential grammatical elements of the Hebrew language. We have prioritized common and meaningful prefixes and suffixes that will help our children understand the Hebrew language and our liturgy.
2 This is the whole Curriculum? No! These standards are not a comprehensive list of everything that our students will learn here at the Religious School of Temple Emanuel of Tempe. Rather, our goal is that at the very minimum, we will know that our students will leave with this foundational set of information. They will internalize this vocabulary. They will embrace and engage with the liturgy. They will understand the beautiful and deep connection that the Hebrew language has with our rituals and celebrations. With this foundation, they will be set for a lifetime of Jewish experiences. Assessments: We will measure success through games and rituals. Borrowing from the successful implementation of experiential learning at Jewish Summer Camp, we will use games and rituals as a time to assess progress. Games Bowling: Students will roll a ball into pins that have Hebrew words on them. Students must read the words on the pins that they knocked down. Dice: Students will be in a room full of words with numbers on them. They will roll the dice and need to read the word that corresponds to that number. Twister: Instead of dots with colors, the twister board will have Hebrew words on them. Musical Words: Students will walk around the classroom to music. When the music stops, students read the word in front of them. Get creative: The above are just a few assessments but the sky is the limit. If the children are having fun and the teacher can assess progress, the assessment is a success. Rituals Shabbat: Pick Shabbat leaders and have them lead the class in prayers. Have children design a Shabbat table. What s needed? What would they add? Havdallah: Select students who will lead havdallah Have students list times when havdallah would be appropriate (not only in religious context) Holidays: Each holiday brings unique and unfamiliar blessings that can challenge the children to work on decoding skills. Holidays may also be a great time to encourage children to write their own prayers
