2 Did You Know? By Rabbi Beller Now that we know that the Kedusha (sanctity) of a BK is an extension of that of the Bet HaMikdash, did you know: One is not to engage in mundane conversation in a BK lightheaded frivolity and joking around -קלות ראש is forbidden Eating (including the chewing of gum) or drinking is forbidden other than for a seudat mitzva One is required to sit in a respectful manner (not cross-legged or lying around) The reading of newspapers is forbidden One is forbidden to use the BK as a shortcut (including walking via the bimah to cross from one side of the BK to the other) The BK must be kept clean (at least to the same degree that one is accustomed to in a private home) Cellular phones need to be switched off before entering a BK (unless a person is in a profession that requires it to be on) Both men and married women are required to have their heads covered inside the BK. Greetings should be made in a way that respect the laws of modesty. All of the above applies at all times that one is physically in a BK, and is not related to whether it is a time of Tefila. So how comes there is a general laxity surrounding many of these laws? Because you probably didn t realize that What we call a BK is not strictly a BK because a condition was made from the outset that the regular sanctity of a BK not fall upon it. There were those who were so strict about NOT having the kedusha of a BK that they insisted on calling it a shtiebel or Meeting place of sages By not having the regular sanctity of a BK, the requirements and restrictions of a regular BK are reduced in severity. HOWEVER Due to the presence of an Aron Kodesh with Sifrei Torah and the fact that the BK has been designated for prayer and Torah Study, it is still incumbent to conduct oneself in a respectful manner. "ולקחתם מפרי הארץ" - גם זה חלק (מסורבל) מתוך סולם העדיפויות ובשובם, איזו טעות, דווחו "אל כל עדת בני ישראל" ולא אל משה לבדו וניתנה לכלב בן יפונה רשות לתת הערכה מבצעית בלא שהיתה סמכות בידו דבר שגרר כמובן שטף של הערכה נגדית מצד יתר הנשיאים שלא היו בעדו ומדוע בכלל נשלחו המרגלים אם כל התשובות כבר ניתנו מזמן על ידי כבודו?
