SHABBOS CHIZUK Shabbos Parashas Korach, June 20/3 Tamuz, was the Kehilla s annual end-of-season Shabbos Chizuk. This year, the Kehilla was privileged to have as its guest Rav Sholom Kamenetsky, Rosh Yeshiva of the Philadelphia Yeshiva. A Kiddush, at which Rabbi Shlomo Goldberg and Rav Kamenetsky spoke, was held at the Agudah shul. At the Seudo Shelishis in Moller Hall, Rabbi Yitzchok Israel began the program by noting the absence of Rav Gelley and wishing him a Refuah Sheleima BeKorov. Rabbi Israel noted that while Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman s health has prevented him from coming these last years, his Yeshiva and Kollel Rashbi still need our support. Both Rav Mantel and Rav Kamenetsky, in their addresses, discussed various aspects of the Maharal s definition of, and exposition on, Machlokes, among other ideas.

Vol. 45, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 2 After the Seudo Shelishis, Rav Kamenetsky delivered that afternoon s Daf Yomi shiur to a very appreciative audience. The Kehilla s weekly Spring Seudos Shelishis came to a close a week later, on Shabbos Parashas Chukas. We express our gratitude to those who sponsored the Seudos. Many thanks as well to the additional speakers at each Seudo: Rabbi Chaim Aschkenasy, Rabbi Dovid Auerbach, Rabbi Yaakov Bechhofer, Rabbi Avrohom Gordimer, Rabbi Chananel Herbsman, Mr. Michael Gutmann, Mr. Gerald Lanzkron, Rabbi Yisroel Strauss and Rabbi Raphael M. Weis. DR. ERICH ERLBACH, z.l. It was with great sadness that our Kehilla s members and friends, among many others, attended the Levayo, and the subsequent Shivo, of Dr. Erlbach z.l., almost exactly a month ago. Rav Mantel, Rav Yaakov Perlow and Rabbi Dovid Willig were maspid the Niftar in Moller Hall which was filled to above capacity. A member of the Board of Trustees since 1970 until the terrible injury which ultimately cost him his life, and President of the Kehilla from 1986 to 2008, Dr. Erlbach was the exemplar of one who is Oseik BeTzorchei Tzibur BeEmuna. Born in Wuerzburg, he came as a child with his family to Washington Heights in 1939, and it was the then-nascent Khal Adath Jeshurun that he would both lead and serve with such distinction for all his adult life. His work for the Kehilla was both far-ranging and foresighted, and was encompassed by extraordinary integrity, truth, devotion and love. Dr. Erlbach was an accomplished Talmid Chochom, who was a Magid Shiur of Daf Yomi for many years. His love for learning was well known, as he would use any extra few minutes for that pursuit. He was the Chairman of the Physics Department in City College where he taught for decades, making a continual, outstanding Kiddush HaShem in all he did. He was a teacher par excellence with the ability to explain both the most difficult and obscure subjects to the advanced student and the most elementary topics to the beginner. It is our fervent hope that Dr. Erlbach s legacy, from the manifold projects in which he was involved, to the immeasurable Zechuyos he surely accrued, will rebound to his family and to the Kehilla whose welfare was his prime concern. ANNUAL P EYLIM/LEV L ACHIM GATHERING On Monday evening, June 22/ 6 Sivan, the Kehilla sponsored the annual gathering to support P eylim/lev L Achim. P eylim/lev L Achim s many programs have led thousands of families in Eretz Yisroel to rediscover the beauty of our heritage. Mr. Avram Cahn was the evening s chairman, and the speakers were Rav Mantel and Rav Dovid Fishman, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Kesser Torah and previously 12 th grade rebbi in our Mesivta. Rav Mantel spoke about the centrality of Eretz Yisroel and how our Tefillos go to Shomayim via Eretz Yisroel. Rav Fishman spoke movingly of his trip last summer to visit Lev L Achim s programs, a trip that coincided with the war in Gaza. Although some of the programs he had planned to visit were suspended due to the war, he saw and reported on the dedication of Lev L Achim staff and participants

Vol. 45, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 3 during and despite the disruptions. Rav Fishman also warmly recalled his years teaching in our Mesivta and his continuing connection to his Washington Heights talmidim and their parents. All who attended came away very inspired. GRADUATIONS Sixth Grade Boys Siyum On Sunday evening, June 14 /27 Sivan, the 6th grade boys of our Yeshiva, led by their beloved Rebbi, Rabbi Moshe Beck, marked the end of their tenure in Elementary School with a siyum/ graduation seudo. Attended by the boys, their parents and grandparents, and presided over by the Menahel, Rabbi Yehuda Moller, and Rabbis Beck and Ariel Levi (the boys General Studies teacher, who also joined the class and Rabbi Beck on their trip to Philadelphia the next morning), the seudo featured addresses by both Rav Mantel and Rabbi Moller. Rav Mantel discussed the fifth Berocho of the Amida, in which we first say Hashiveinu Avinu Lesorosecho, referring to HaShem as our Father, while in contrast we then say Vekorveinu Malkeinu La'avodosecho, calling Him our King. The Rav explained that when it comes to Torah, as in the first phrase of the Berocho, we have an extremely close relationship with HaShem, as a child does with a loving father. That is also the relationship required of a rebbi to his talmid, which, the Rav concluded, is most true of the 6th grade s rebbi, Rabbi Beck, who demonstrates concern with every of aspect of each child's life. Rabbi Moller spoke of the multiple uses of the shoresh in Ahava Rabbo, when we implore HaShem to teach us Torah. He explained that Torah is critical to us and we cannot survive without it. Highlights of the evening were the brief Divrei Torah on topics in Perek Eilu Metzios that the graduates beautifully presented to their guests. The Keser Shem Tov Award for good Middos was presented to Yosef Aharon Balashov. Rabbi Moller noted that although this boy certainly deserved it, it was a difficult decision as all the boys have demonstrated fine Derech Eretz. Rabbi Beck concluded the evening by relating a story of a Rosh Yeshiva who asked a talmid to, when he would return home for Bein HaZemanim, buy a particular watch for him. Despite his efforts, the bochur could not find the watch for sale and returned to yeshiva broken hearted that he could not please his rebbi. The rebbi then explained that he did not want the watch; he wanted his talmid to think about him despite the separation. Rabbi Beck explained that Torah causes us to remember HaShem and develop a relationship with Him. Despite a last minute change in venue due to a plumbing problem in the Broadway Building s all-purpose room, the class mothers came through at the eleventh hour and set up a beautiful buffet in the second floor of the girls' building. While enjoying refreshments, the parents and grandparents viewed slide presentations the boys made. Pre-Mesivta Graduation On Wednesday evening, June 17/Rosh Chodesh Tamuz, the eighth grade boys gathered in the ballroom of Mt. Sinai Jewish Center to celebrate their graduation from Pre-Mesivta.

Vol. 45, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 4 Rav Mantel addressed the audience, as did Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman, General Studies principal. The class representative to speak was Shlomo Fink, who discussed the difference between Sasson and Simcha. The Midos award went to Yehuda Katzenstein, chosen by the unanimous vote of his classmates. The Parent Representative this year was Rabbi Avrohom Feuer, who delivered remarks, before the welldeserved diplomas were awarded. We wish the boys much Hatzlocho as they continue with their education and learning. Many thanks to the class mothers, Mesdames Malky Katzenstein and Rena Levy, for the set-up of the refreshments. Mesivta Graduation On Thursday, June 18/Rosh Chodesh Tamuz, the 12th grade of our Mesivta celebrated their graduation. Rav Mantel addressed the boys and the audience in general, as did the Menahel, Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik, and Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman, the general Studies principal. Rav Mantel discussed how the "klaf "for the Torah SheBe'al Peh is every person who learns it. Just as klaf for a Sefer Torah needs proper preparation and dedication, so too must a person be a suitable receptacle for Torah. Accomplishing this, by molding the talmidim, with their midos and full personalities, in addition to the actual Limud HaTorah, is the accomplishment of the Rebbeim in the Mesivta. Rabbi Hoffman urged the graduates to be aware and alert to the challenges that they may face in the world, noting the need to adhere to the teachings of our Torah leaders, and to avoid the Korach-like thinking that rejected the teachings of the Gedolei Yisroel. The assembled were addressed by two class representatives, Mordechai Cahn and Netanel Tzur. In addition, Eli Davis, slated to offer Closing Remarks, spoke as well, instead of his grandfather, Rav Chaim Davis, who was unexpectedly unable to attend. Rabbi Soloveitchik and Rabbi Hoffman distributed the diplomas, and Rabbi Soloveitchik spoke briefly about each boy s talents and accomplishments. We wish the graduates much success as they continue on in Yeshiva. Our thanks to the class mothers, Mesdames Esther Cahn and Miriam Hoffman, for their help, and as always, to Mrs. Sarah Bass, the Mesivta s indefatigable secretary. Bais Yaakov Middle School Graduation On Monday, June 15/28 Sivan, fourteen girls proudly concluded their first eight years of school, as they gathered in the ballroom of Mt. Sinai Jewish Center for their graduation. Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein warmly welcomed all those present, and Rav Mantel then addressed the graduates and guests. Rabbi Yosef Kalinsky, father of graduate Leah Kalinsky, was this year s Parent Representative to speak at the graduation. Mrs. Hena Gottesman, the Middle School s Menaheles, addressed those present, after which the Rika Breuer Midos Awardee, Miss Chana Pinczower, spoke. Mrs. Diane Lanzkron, General Studies principal, and Mrs. Susan Koss, Educational Director, each spoke, and Mrs. Gottesman joined them for the presentation of the much-anticipated diplomas, as well as a

Vol. 45, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 5 small gift to each girl. As Mrs. Gottesman called on each girl to receive her diploma, she described each one of her Talmidos, encapsulating each girl's midos and accomplishments. We wish the girls much Hatzlocho as they enter high school. Bais Yaakov D Rav Hirsch Graduation The 2015 Commencement Ceremony of Bais Yaakov D Rav Hirsch, Monsey, took place on Sunday afternoon June 21. Mrs. Rochel Leah Frankel, Limudei Kodesh Principal, opened the program by greeting all the guests and thanking Rebbetzin Gelley for making the special effort to attend. Mrs. Frankel addressed the graduates with inspiring words as they begin the next phase of their lives. Rabbi Pinchus Jung, representing the faculty, spoke to the graduates, who had been his students for the last two years. He discussed portions of Tefillas HaDerech, one of the last subjects that they had learned together, and how it pertained to the new journeys upon which they were about to embark. Rabbi Jung commented how the girls stood up for him for the last two years every time he came into the classroom. It was now his privilege to stand up for them as they entered the hall, culminating four years of hard work and study. Dr. Aidy Salomon, General Studies Principal, expressed her good wishes and words of encouragement to the graduates. The two valedictorians, Miss Rivky Berg, Limudei Kodesh, and Miss Hindi Herbst, Limudei Chol, then addressed the gathering. Mrs. Chedva Ashenberg, the Assistant Limudei Kodesh Principal, presented special necklaces to the new members of the Shvilei Zahav Honor Society for the girls who showed combined scholastic achievements as well as excellence in acts of service to the school. Amongst the new members were three graduates from Washington Heights Jennifer Gutmann, Rivky Katzenstein and Kayla Levy. Two additional awards were presented by Mrs. Frankel - the Livyas Chein Exemplary Character Award to Dena Wassner and the Hatzneia Leches Award to Kayla Levy. Rebbetzin Gelley then joined Mrs. Frankel and Dr. Salomon to present each graduate with her diploma and a gift. Mazel Tov to all the graduates. (The KAJN expresses its appreciation to Messrs. Avram Cahn, Avram Gutmann, Pinchas Katzenstein, Rabbi Ezra Lasdun and Mrs. Sarah Bass in the reporting of the various graduations.) NEW SEFORIM Rav Hirsch Two new publications by Feldheim Publishers which reflect the spiritual heritage of our Kehilla should be of interest to our readers. ספר במדבר עם פירוש רש " ר הירש complements the previously published Sifrei Bereshis, Shemos and Vayikra in the new Hebrew edition of the Hirsch Chumash. This edition was translated by Rabbi Shmuel Globus, edited by Rabbi Yirmiyahu Kaganoff and redacted by Rabbi Avishai Shotland under the auspices of the Rabbi Dr. Joseph Breuer Foundation. This edition bears the warm endorsement of Rav Chaim Kanievsky שליט "א with his ברכה.מכתב Bemidbar is available through our office for $21/volume and Bereshis/Shemos/Vayikra/Bemidbar are available for $75/set (including shipping). Rav Hirsch s Commentary on the Chumash has become an integral part of Torah study. For many years, there has been a strong demand for an index to The Hirsch Chumash to assist in finding a specific subject, word or reference. The Index to the Hirsch Chumash contains three indices that fill this need: (1) a Subject index; (2) a Word index; and (3) a Source index with Nach, Midrash, Mishna, Gemara and Halacha references. The Subject index is in English while the Word index and Source index are in Hebrew. The volume, at over 300 pages, has more than 2,700 references to Talmud Bavli alone

Vol. 45, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 6 and serves as an aid to learning. The Index to the Hirsch Chumash is available through our office at $20/copy (including shipping). Sefer by Rav Yaakov Perlow By Mr. Ben Ettlinger Following the successful publication two years ago of Sefer Adas Yaakov on Pesach topics Rav Yaakov Perlow has produced the second in a series of seforim on the Yomim Tovim, the Adas Yaakov on Shovuos. The presentation of the sefer is in a style similar to the first and is divided into three sections. The opening section covers Parashas Yisro from Ch.19 until the end of the Sedro. The Rebbe presents Chidushim on the pesukim. Many of these novella may be familiar or at least serve as a reminder of the chidushim the Rebbe delivered over the many years he gave his weekly Chumash Shiur in our neighborhood, first in the Aguda and then on Thursday nights in Shul. The second section contains Divrei Torah BeInyonei HaMoed. Most are published here for the first time, while a few are from the first Adas Yaakov on Shas which the Rebbe published when he was still in Washington Heights. The final section contains a Peirush on Eishes Chayil. The sefer is available in seforim stores. Mazel Tov to the Rebbe on publication of the sefer. We look forward to the next םירפס in the series. LADIES AUXILIARY SPRING BRUNCH By Mrs. Judy Fulda The Ladies Auxiliary of Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch is instrumental in helping fund educational extras that are important to the growth of each student and provide them with a "geschmak" for learning. Things like trips, prizes and teacher trainings are all ancillary expenses that the Ladies Auxiliary undertakes to enrich the learning experience. The annual Spring Brunch is one of their major fundraisers; it provides a much-needed social outlet while recognizing outstanding women who make a difference to the school community. This year, the Brunch paid tribute to three exceptional ladies: the Guest of Honor, Mrs. Esther Jacobovits; the Community Service Awardee, Mrs. Cindy Klugmann; and the Faculty Awardee, Mrs. Shani Plotzker. Mrs. Esty Rogin began the proceedings with the reciting of a kapital of Tehillim, and then gave an introduction about the vital work of the Ladies Auxiliary and an overview of the honorees. She highlighted a strong thread connecting all three women, that of Chessed and Chinuch. Rebbetzin Gelley took time out of her busy schedule in Lakewood to attend this event, one very close to her heart. She gave everyone an update about the Rav's condition and thanked everyone for their continued Tefillos, Tehillim and Tzedaka on his behalf. As Mistress of Ceremonies par excellence, Rebbetzin Gelley posed the question: Why is the Hebrew word for charity derived from the root of Tzedek-righteousness? The answer is that when a person takes his G-d given blessings (for example, wealth) and uses them for the right things for which they are meant to be used, at the right time they are meant to be used, then that person elevates his money to what is right and good. Then the money becomes tzedaka, righteousness. Mrs. Cindy Klugmann, the first honoree recognized, was described as a woman who takes on community commitments "with panache and intelligence." Active in the Chevra Kadisha and on the

Vol. 45, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 7 Ladies Auxiliary Board, Mrs. Klugmann still manages to be a devoted wife and mother and to graciously host many Shabbos guests. When asked to do something for someone else she consistently proves herself to be "ready, willing and very able;" many women want to emulate her fun, yet serious, ways. Mr. Hillel Gross, Cindy's father, paid tribute to his daughter's many fine qualities, humorously taking credit for teaching her all of them. He emphasized that if you want to get something done, asking a busy person like his daughter is the best way to make sure it gets done. Cindy, in turn, also gave a very funny address which nevertheless contained depth and sincerity. She talked about her gratitude to YRSRH for the Chinuch her children have received as well as the appreciation she has for the Kollel which has been a big part of her husband's and her family's life. She recognized her acculturation into the community and valuing the lofty Yekkish traits of preciseness and honesty with which she is surrounded. Lastly, she lauded the extraordinary women of the Ladies Auxiliary and is proud to be counted among them. The Director of our Preschool, Mrs. Shani Plotzker, is also a summer-camp director as well as a soughtafter Kalla teacher. She has been instrumental in innovating exciting new programs in our Preschool. "Morah Shani" is creative and warm, forging beautiful relationships with her staff as well as her young charges. A touching presentation was made by her adorable daughters, a commemorative scrapbook was presented, created by her devoted faculty, and the smiling girls of the Pre-1A sang her praises, including how Morah Shani helps them lead a Torah life. Mrs. Plotzker's sister, Esty Rogin, spoke with love and affection about her sister, summarizing: "The school is richer for having her with us." When Mrs. Plotzker addressed the assembled she shared how she had always wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and has had the privilege of working with youngsters since she was 16. She praised the education her children have received here and said she finds that the Chinuch at YRSRH is superior to that of many other places where her children have studied. She movingly thanked her staff; her exceptional secretary, Miss Maya Gardenswartz; the Yeshiva s administration; the Executive Office; her beloved sister, Esty; the parents who entrust their children to her care and all the guests who came to the Brunch. The Guest of Honor, Mrs. Esther Jacobovits, has led a life full of Chinuch and Chessed. In spite of her just getting up from Shiva for her esteemed brother, Mrs. Jacobovits honored us with her presence. She accepted the award in memory of her late husband, Mr. Michael Jacobovits, z.l. Esther Ehrentreu was born into an illustrious family in Munich where her father was the Rav. The values she learned at home were ingrained in her when she subsequently married and began her own Torah home. Together with her husband they raised a beautiful family where community service was the norm (e.g. hachnassas orchim and Chevra Kaddisha work). Mrs. Jacobovits also pursued a Masters degree in Special Education. When young refugee women who knew nothing about their heritage were sent by Agudath Israel from Iran to Vienna and a couple was needed to care for them and teach them the most basic details about Judaism, the Jacobovitses were the couple who volunteered. During the time they spent in Vienna they were very successful and positively impacted scores of young women. Upon their return, Mrs. Jacobovits began to teach Special Education in the P'TACH program at the Yeshiva University High School for Girls in Queens. Mrs. Shuli Pressburger, Mrs. Jacobovits's daughter, shares the family's gratitude to P'TACH and the Queens High School for being like family and for being role models of Emuna and Bitachon especially during her mother's time of need. Mrs. Pressburger, representing the family, extolled her mother's virtues and singled out her mida of perseverance as one of her strongest. She puts her whole heart and soul into everything and sees each task to completion. "She serves Hashem in everything she does." Rebbetzin Gelley shared that when she had asked the Rav what he felt she could add about the Jacobovits family, he said that "they are steadfast and rock solid!" The Ladies Auxiliary put together a most beautiful, flower-themed Brunch with the worthiest of awardees. The food, expertly prepared by Yitzchak Dyckman of Lechayim Caterers was served by our high school girls who volunteered their morning. Thanks to all involved, especially the Executive Office
