KAJ NEWSLETTER A monthly publication of K hal Adath Jeshurun March 1, 17 ג' אדר תשע"ז Volume 47 Number 6 YAHRZEIT OF RAV SCHWAB,רב זכריה בן רבקה Please continue to be mispallel for Rav Gelley.רפואה שלמה for a This coming Purim will mark the 22 nd Yahrzeit of our late, revered Rav, Rav Shimon Schwab,, who was niftar on 14 Adar I 5755, Purim Kotton. Raised in Frankfurt am Main and a Talmid of the Hirsch Realschule and Frankfurt Yeshiva, Rav Schwab was steeped in the philosophy of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch. When Rav Schwab then also became a Talmid of the Eastern European Yeshivos (in Telshe and Mir), Rav Schwab had the great Zechus to come into close contact with many of the Gedolim of pre-war Europe, including such luminaries as the Chofetz Chaim, Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, Rav Joseph Leib Bloch, Rav Yeruchom Levovitz, and Rav Elchonon Wasserman. Rav Schwab mentions some of these encounters in his sefer on the parshios hashovu o, Maayan Beis HaSho eivo. The popularity of this sefer, as well as Rav Schwab s shiurim on Tefilo, Iyov, Yeshayo and Ezra- Nechemia, are testament to Rav Schwab s influence still being strongly felt, both in our community and throughout the Jewish world. 67 th ANNUAL DINNER יהי זכרו ברוך The Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe was the site of our Kehilla and Yeshiva s 67 th Annual Dinner, on Sunday evening, February 19/23 Shevat. Mr. Ori Alpert, Dinner Chairman, started things off by noting that this was actually not the first time he had been chosen to speak at the Dinner, the first time being as a firstgrader in Rabbi Emanuel Weldler s z.l. class. Now, as back then, Mr. Alpert explained, he simply could not refuse. Mr. Alpert commended YRSRH, as well as the Kehilla, which, he said, was an integral part of his own school experience, recalling the zechus he had had to accompany Rav Schwab to Mincha. There followed a video presentation by and about Rabbi and Mrs. Mark and Esther Bauman, Alumni Parents of the Year. Rabbi Bauman stressed the devotion of both of their parents to the Kehilla and Yeshiva they loved. Both Rabbi and Mrs. Bauman attended Breuer s themselves, as have their children. While next year the Baumans will experience the strange sensation of not having a child currently in YRSRH, PURIM NOTES Matonos Lo evyonim may be given to the Kehilla Office or members of the Board of Trustees and Synagogue Committee no later than the end of davening on Purim morning or go to Schedule: Purim Night: Shabbos ends: 6:40pm Megilla: Not before 7:00pm 2 nd Leining: 9:15pm EST Mesiba at Rav Mantel s home: 9:45pm Purim Day DST: Shacharis: 7:25am Megilla: Not before 8:20am 2 nd Leining: 10:30am

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 2 they plan to keep their connection with YRSRH, just as they have done with the Kehilla all these years. The honorees received impressive plaques, presented by Mr. Alan Ettlinger representing the Kehilla, and Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein representing the Yeshiva. Mrs. Lenore Richter, in her video appearance, noted that a Jewish, Torah education knows no bounds, and is the integral component for the success and continuity of any Jewish yishuv. She herself became involved in helping, first her local Yeshiva and then others, through a feeling of Hakoras HaTov, towards the members of her community who came to help out with her little daughters, aleihen hasholom. A classroom in our pre-school has been dedicated L Ilui Nishmasan, with the plaque presented to Mrs. Richter at the Dinner. Those present heard only the highest praise of YRSRH and its administration and Hanhala from Rabbi Yehudah Perlman, Chinuch HaBonim Awardee, and only the highest praise of Rabbi Perlman from Rabbi Yehudah Moller, the elementary Yeshiva s Menahel. Rabbi Moller mentioned Rabbi Perlman s passion and love that he puts into his teaching, and the extraordinary care he shows to each and every talmid. Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik, the evening s Harbotzas HaTorah Awardee, stressed his appreciation of the Kehilla, which is so deeply connected to all our educational institutions, including the Mesivta, Beis Medrash Yeshiva Gedola and Kollel including those gentlemen who have retired from the workforce all of whom form mutually beneficial relationships with one another. While Rav Yaakov Perlow, the Novominsker Rebbe, was unable to attend the Dinner in person, he, via video presentation, spoke of and praised the evening s Guest of Honor, Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein, in glowing terms. Guests heard from and about Rabbi Katzenstein both via video, and his in-person talk which followed, with Rabbi Katzenstein making a heartfelt appeal for our Yeshiva, urging all those who are able, to join him as a Sar HoEllef of the Dinner. In his address, Rav Mantel noted the extremely contrasting paths the descendants of Gershom and Eliezer, the two sons of Moshe Rabbeinu, followed. The Rav, citing Chazal, linked their outcomes to the names they were given, names which reflected the circumstances and feelings of Moshe at the time of their respective births. Though we live in Galus, among antagonistic forces and attitudes, the answer in Chinuch as well as every other sphere of Torah life must never be compromise. Our Yeshiva's talent was displayed and enjoyed through an excellent performance by the Yeshiva's Boys' Choir (grades 4-7) under the direction of Mr. David Nulman. Dr. Moshe Eisen, the Campaign Chairman, had the last words of the evening, as he looked to the future, announcing the launch of a project for the upgrading of the classrooms and other facilities in the boys elementary building (beneath the Shul). The evening's program concluded with Rabbi Katzenstein s leading the Shir HaMaalos and bensching, but not before the much-anticipated drawing of the annual Automobile Campaign Raffle, once again successfully conducted by Pinchas and Malky Katzenstein. We are delighted to report that the winning ticket belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Alan and Sharon Sommer. The work that resulted in this year's successful Dinner and Journal campaign was almost entirely done in our Yeshiva's executive office, by a small, dedicated group of individuals under the direction of Mr. Jonathan Simons, all of whom deserve our accolades. This group includes the individuals who volunteered countless hours for the various projects, as well as the regular staff members who gave of their time much beyond the call of duty. At the same time we must mention our admiration and

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 3 gratitude to the Administrative Board for its immense work at this event, and year-round, in its crucial fund-raising position. Many thanks to the "Dinner Crew", under the able direction of Mr. Samuel P. Levi. All those who did the behind-the-scenes work necessary to "run" the dinner efficiently deserve our gratitude. Thanks also go to the editors, proofreaders, typesetters and solicitors for making the Journal a success once again. MR. EUGENE GOLDMAN z.l. The Kehilla mourns the passing of Mr. Eugene Goldman z l. Mr. Goldman was a member of the Board of Trustees for 15 for nearly two decades, during which he held the office of Treasurer. Mr. Goldman also served with distinction for decades on the Board of the Chevra Kadisha. Mr. Goldman s deep Torahknowledge and eloquence were highlighted by his many years of serving as the chairman of the annual Simchas Torah gathering and the annual Chevra Se uda. יהי זכרו ברוך MATZO BAKING IN ERETZ YISROEL Machine-baked Matzos and Matzo products were once again baked in Eretz Yisroel under our Hashgocho, this year under the labels of Glick s and Haddar. Rav Mantel went to Eretz Yisroel to supervise and participate in the baking, and was joined by a number of our graduates and others with Kehilla connections learning there, pictured below.

On Sunday, January 22/24 Teves, a breakfast-siyum was enjoyed in Moller hall, as the Chaburos continue their journey through Nezikin. Rabbi Elchonon Stern was mesayem, and Rav Mantel delivered both Divrei Brocha to the mesaymim, as well as an exposition on the last sugia, בתר עיקרו,נופו in the masechta. Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein then thanked Rabbi Stern for his selfless dedication to the daf and the shul Chaburos and noted how Rabbi Stern s incredible bekius in Shas is a most valuable and appreciated asset, to the Daf Yomi participants and the community at large. Mr. Taub, a long time Daf Yomi participant, said the Hadran Kaddish. The Daf Yomi Chaburos, as well as the Kehilla at large, take this opportunity to pray for his continued Refuah Sheleima.

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 5 The Chaburos extend a hearty invitation to anyone who would like to join them. NEW SEFER BY RAV POSEN Rav Posen has just published a new sefer, Kitzur Hilchos Yom Tov with English translation which will be available at the Kehilla Office.

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 6 FROM OUR YESHIVA Yeshiva Gedola The annual Melave Malka of the Beis Medrash was held on Motzoei Shabbos Parashas Bo. Speakers included Rav Mantel, Rav Rubanowitz and Rabbi Celnick. The Melave Malka serves as a fund-raising event for the Beis HaMedrash and is attended by parents of the the bochurim of the Beis Medrash. Mesivta A situation brought about by the recent inclement weather necessitated a short, impromptu class for our Mesivta before Mincha. Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein (pictured next page) stepped in, and spoke to the boys about the history of 90 Bennett Ave and the role it played in the early years of the Kehilla. Did you know that during World War II, the old skylights atop the building had to be blackened during night time activities? Authorities at the time were afraid of a Nazi air raid on New York.

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 7 Middle School Girls The Middle School Girls were honored to have Rebbetzin Angeline Gelley visit with them to mark their upcoming Bas Mitzvah s. The Rebbetzin spoke to the girls about the privilege they have to be B nos Melachim and the responsibility they carry to promote and perpetuate our Mesora. It was greatly appreciated to have Rebbetzin Gelley make the trip from Lakewood for this occasion. SISTERHOOD LECTURE On the Tuesday night before Asoro B'Teves (January 3 rd ) the ladies of the Sisterhood were treated to a shiur focusing on Fascinating Facts about the Fast by Ms. Shayna Weinberg-Gordon. Ms. Weinberg- Gordon earned her JD degree from Brooklyn Law School where she received an award for public service; she is now an attorney with the Administration for Children's Services. Formerly of Peoria, Illinois and currently a resident of Washington Heights, Ms. Weinberg-Gordon is passionate about Torah and the shiurim she delivers regularly to the women in our community.

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 8 Ms. Weinberg-Gordon explained that the fast of Asoro BeTeves (the 10 th of Teves) actually incorporates the commemoration of three tragedies that befell the Jewish people, on the 8 th, 9 th and 10 th days of Teves. The Gemoro tells us about Targum Shivim, the Septuagint, the translation of the Torah as decreed by King Ptolemy, who placed 72 Chachomim into 72 locked rooms and commanded them to translate the Torah into Greek, on the 8 th of Teves. His challenge was practically impossible that all 72 translations be exactly the same without any deviation. A neis (miracle) occurred; every single translation matched every other, word for word! But although the sages were spared, the Greeks now had a translation of our holy Torah to understand however they wished. This event in history was considered as catastrophic as the incident of the Eigel HaZohov. The 9 th of Teves is the Yahrzeit of Ezra HaSofer, the day that he died. During the leadership of Ezra the Jews were on a very low spiritual level but Ezra strengthened the people and lifted them up. Ezra was the bridge between the era of the Nevi'im and the Anshei Kenesses HaGedola (Men of the Great Assembly). Once there were no more Nevi'im we no longer had the same clarity as regarding our Avodas HaShem. Previously, if someone in Klal Yisroel was confronted with an ethical dilemma and wanted to know, How must a Jew think/respond in this situation? he could ask a Novi. Upon Ezra's passing the clarity formerly provided by the prophets became obscured. We mourn that we no longer know as clearly what HaShem wants from us. The siege of Yerusholayim by the Bavlim began on the10 th of Teves. This began the chain of calamities which finally ended with the destruction of the first Beis HaMikdosh. Ms. Weinberg-Gordon explained the historical and religious significance of each day's events and gave deeper meaning to why we fast. The lecture was given l'illui nishmas two of Ms. Weinberg-Gordon's grandparents and was heard via speakerphone by her parents in Peoria who derived much nachas ruach from the presentation. We all derived a greater comprehension about the day and were certainly able to approach Asoro B Teves with a richer appreciation for its message. SSC OF KAJ VISITS N.Y. HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBIT Two dozen members of the Senior Social Clubs of KAJ visited the New-York Historical Museum & Library on Sunday, February 12 to view The First Jewish Americans: Freedom and Culture in the New World. Originally scheduled to leave at 11:30 AM, the group left an hour later so that they could pay their respects to Mr. Eugene Goldman, z l, whose levaya took place that same morning. The group took its guidance from Rav Mantel who paskened that the trip should not be canceled (which would have resulted in a significant financial loss as the bus and tour had already been booked and paid for) but should be postponed until after the levaya so that all those tour participants who so desired could attend. The main attraction at the exhibit was a small, recently-recovered 16 th century manuscript by Luis de Carvajal the Younger who was burned at the stake by the Inquisition in Mexico in 1596 for observing Judaism. Among the many other items of interest (several of which were lent to the museum by Manhattan s Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue) included a siddur with the bracha one should say upon circumcising a slave.

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 9 The group enjoyed the tour and even got a chance to meet President Lincoln (an actor dressed like him) on his birthday in the museum s lobby. Many thanks to the group s director, Mrs. Molly Resnick, and Mrs. Denise Helmreich of the SSC of KAJ Board for recommending the idea. NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER Moriah continues to serve delicious, fresh, hot lunches made with love, to approximately 100 seniors daily. Members stay for the afternoon, for exercise (Zumba, Tai Chi, Pilates and Fit n Fun are just a few of our offerings), music, book club, crafts & beading, therapeutic massage, cooking/nutrition classes, aromatherapy, ESL classes, discussion groups, Laugh Café or just to sit around with friends and enjoy passing the time. Thanks to the generosity of Gemiluth Chessed of Greater New York, Moriah distributed beautiful Tu Bshvat packages to our clients. The seniors were thrilled with the colorful and substantial boxes filled with dried kiwi, apricots, dates, pineapple, papaya and more! One of our members commented, You don t only take care of the seniors food, you take care of their WELL-BEING! That sentiment could not have been more evident when a fast-moving snowstorm hit our city the next day. Moriah s crackerjack team stepped into action. While other Centers were closed, Moriah quickly organized a group of volunteers, both young and old, to assist in the effort. Some seniors ventured out to the Center, others had neighbors and friends pick up meals for them and Moriah staff made calls and arranged delivery to many others. All in all over 60 meals were provided, with over 30 homebound seniors receiving a hot meal on a cold day. Special thanks are due to Ezra Feigenbaum, Chaim Herbsman, and Ary, Shua and Meir Levi for assisting in the task of sealing, packing and delivering meals, in addition to serving our on-site crowd. In honor of Presidents Day, Moriah hosted a mellow Jazz Concert to the delight of our seniors. Two musicians from Concerts in Motion took requests from the audience and played crowd pleasing favorites on the saxophone and bass. As a special added treat, Mr. Yehuda Grabie, brother of our previous Director Monica Cohn, o.h., was in attendance and brought cookies for all our members. Stay tuned for more concerts to come at the Center. Moriah is actively seeking volunteers to assist with check-in and lunch service. Volunteer for an hour, volunteer once a week, or volunteer more often. The choice is yours. If you are interested in being part of our warm and welcoming environment, please call us at

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 17 JAK RETTELSWEN New Kehilla initiatives, committees formed Way back in November, our staff obtained a hardcopy of the KAJ HaNoseinTeshua Committee s (chaired by Rabbi Strauss) last extant draft, dated Monday, November 7, 2016, Erev Election Day, concerning possible impending loshon zochor/nekeiva changes to this Tefilla. Notes included the regret expressed by some members over the fact that a change from yorum haudau to yorum haudoh would result in the loss of one au, a rare commodity as is, these days. While this draft was withdrawn from consideration some 36 hours later, at about 2:30 AM EST in the morning, one suggestion still being urged by those concerned with freedom of conscience, and especially by those of dual citizenships, is for the Chazon to simply pause for a silent fill-in-your-melech/premier/president-moment. Picture cards were drawn up for this purpose, but were rejected when the similarities to a police line-up were noted. Draw-in candidate of your choice Another of our new committees, the Committee of Alternate Facts, is still investigating any lessons that can be learned from all those record-breaking crowds in Washington [D.C.] vis-a vis those similarly crowded rows in Shul in Washington [Heights].

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 18 KAJ s newly formed Levush Malchus committee is pleased to preview the new uniform for all KAJ Baalei Tefilla. Criteria for the retirement of Chazon numbers is still being worked out in the Kehilla s secret think-tank, somewhere between Cooperstown and Tannersville, NY. We are offering a reward for anyone who collars (and ties, jackets and hats) the elusive Chazzan #1. In another new initiative, KAJ is pleased to announce that when members Smartphones get an Aliyah (after all, some phones seem to daven more than their owners who are on them), they may swipe their donation through this ingenious invention, the Elec Yeck Schteck, pictured on next page. We are pleased to report that The Zomet Institute in Eretz Yisroel has already started to work on a similar electronic "schtecker" for human use on Shabbos. Some members may have noticed a similar device already up and running at the Keilim Mikve. The amount of smarts a Smartphone requires to be considered a Bar Daas and do one s toveling is still being worked out; in the meantime, the device works equally well with people.

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 19 Special Sleep Report We wish to remind all members and friends that to celebrate the first-ever change to DST occurring on Leil Purim, all Mesibos on Motzo ei Shabbos should not end before 2 AM so that we may change the time BeTzibur, as is our minhag. If there is a gap of just a few minutes, the choir is considering presenting its Ish Yehudi musical selections at that time, with an additional, new arrangement of BaLaila HaHu. While Achashveirosh presumably found himself within the zone of Persian Standard Time, he was nevertheless fated to a sleepless night on the 16 th of Nisan. He was apparently not alone in his א-ג -ג shushan, predicament, as recently discovered and digitally restored phone records (within for faster service) reveal a record number of noise complaints, some extracts presented below: Numerous reports of illegal, after-hours construction, height of structure estimated at about 50 Amos, way above zoning restrictions, accompanied by much banging, drumming and music, all seeming to emanate from the vicinity of the Prime Minister s residence at 10 Down-with-him Street. More than one loyal citizen called in to complain of a lack of Palace security, as a suspicious man was spotted pacing in the king s outer courtyard, cackling and rubbing his hands with glee, much before any decent business hours- and this just a few years after that famous assassination attempt! Nearer morning, complaints of hoof beats and someone screaming through the streets. Numerous calls about rubbernecking delays around the site of a serious fall-from-window accident, leading many to note the lack of broken-window policing also, an astonishing amount of garbage at the accident site, in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of Shushan!

Vol. 47, No. 6 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 20 Of course, many were not asleep for other reasons, including the newly instituted second Leil HaSeder. In fact, it is told that when Haman came to fetch Mordechai, Mordechai was in the middle of Nirtza, and was to be found singing: עשרה מי יודע, עשרה אני יודע, עשרה בני המן, תשע שנות המגילה, שמונים ומאת יום, שבעה רואי פני המלך, ששה עמודי שש, חמש מגילות, ארבעה פסוקים דגאולה, שלש קרני המן-טאשען, שני סריסי המלך, אחד אלוקינו שבשמים ובארץ לשנה הבאה בירושלים!!
