1 KAJ NEWSLETTER A monthly publication of K hal Adath Jeshurun December 7, 16 ז' כסלו תשע"ז Volume 47 Number 4 KRISTALLNACHT,רב זכריה בן רבקה Please continue to be mispallel for Rav Gelley.רפואה שלמה for a The Monday, Thursday and Monday preceding Rosh Chodesh Kislev are the days observed according to our Minhag as BeHa B (Ta anios Sheni Chamishi vesheni), days of prayer and fasting during which special Selichos are said. This year, the anniversary of Kristallnacht, 16 Marcheshvan, was the Thursday preceding the first Ta anis Sheni. It was on the 16 th of Marcheshvan, 5699 (November 9 th -10 th, 1938) that the Nazi furor destroyed nearly all the synagogues in Germany. Countless Sifrei Torah and other seforim were burned, homes and businesses were broken into and looted, and men arrested, some assaulted and others murdered outright. As Rav Eliyahu Glucksman זצ"ל said in one of his last addresses to our Beth Jacob High School, Kristallnacht is a fitting name, in the sense that it was not only the night of shattered glass but of shattered illusions. On Parashas Lech-Lecho, the preceding Shabbos, Rav Mantel mentioned the tragedy and noted that, as the results of the recent Presidential election show, popular feeling may suddenly and wildly sway, a reminder to us that it is solely upon HaKodosh Boruch Hu we must rely. In our Yeshiva, Rabbi Yehudah Moller, menahel, spoke with the upper grades, who were then shown an inspiring video-interview with Mr. Manny Mittleman, someone who lived through Kristallnacht and the ensuing Churban, and who describes, in the video, the Yad HaShem he was privileged to witness through those years. In our Kehilla, the special Selicho of HaShem Elokai, Rabbas Tzeroruni (which is recited three times on Yom Kippur) is added on Ta anis Sheni Kammo, in commemoration of the infamous Kristallnacht and the ensuing Churban Europe. This is also the reason why the Yehi Rotzon s are recited after each time we say Tachanun this was a Takono of the Rabbonim while still in Germany, and our Kehilla is one of the few places in which this Takono is still observed, until, as our Minhag-book says, all Tzoros cease- Bimheiro veyomeinu. SHABBOS PROJECT The Kehilla and its members used Shabbos Parashas Lech Lecho as both a source of Chizuk for themselves, and outreach to others. On Shabbos morning, Rav Mantel discussed the significance of Shabbos in his sermon, and continued in that theme in his talk after Mincha later that day. A gala Kiddush was enjoyed after Shul, at which our Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Rubanowitz, spoke. He was introduced by Mr. Alan Ettlinger, who thanked Mr. and Mrs. David and Judy Hoff, who spearheaded the Shabbos Project in our Kehilla, as well as all others who were involved in arranging the various facets of the project and working for its success.

We anticipate everyone s participation to make this annual event the main fundraiser for our Yeshiva an outstanding success. SPECIAL SHIURIM Repeating the success of the last few years, the Kehilla once again has arranged special shiurim for the legal holidays of Thursday, November24 th, Monday, December 26 th and Monday, January 2 nd, days many members have a day off from their jobs. The first shiur was given by Rav Mantel, to a large and attentive audience (pictured below). Refreshments were available in Moller Hall, the shiurim s locale, and will be again; sponsorship of the remaining shiurim is most welcome. CHOIR OF K HAL ADATH JESHURUN Our choir is looking for new members. This is a unique opportunity for anyone with the ability to sing and an appreciation for music to help enhance the davening in our shul and at the same time benefit from the professional training that our choir receives from its talented Musical Director. In his essay Our Synagogue Choir (included in A Unique Perspective: Rav Breuer s Essays ) Rav Breuer zt l expresses the great reward for those who sing in the choir: We have our choir and can only wish that it will develop and grow in its task. Mishlei (3:9) calls upon us: כבד את ה ' מהונך Honor G-d with your possessions, with the material values which He has granted

A significant commentary (Pesikta) interprets this saying as an admonition: If you have a good voice and you are present in the הכנסת,בית arise and serve G-d with the wealth of your throat. We may expect that, in addition to the present members of the choir, members of the Kehilla who have a good singing voice follow the above admonition. For the second part of the Mishlei verse promises them rich reward: וימלא אסמיך שבע your storage chambers shall fill with satisfaction. Their greatest reward will lie in the knowledge that they have done their share in promoting the dignity of the עבודה in our הכנסת,בית which is so close to our hearts. FROM OUR YESHIVA First Grade Boys Chumash Party Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman s first-grade class celebrated receiving their Chumashim with their muchanticipated Chumash Party. On December 4/4 Kislev, the twenty young men, as well as their delighted families, gathered in Moller Hall for the event. Rav Mantel addressed the audience, as did Rabbi Yehuda Moller, Menahel, and Rabbi Hoffman. SISTERHOOD LECTURE The opening meeting of the KAJ Sisterhood, which was held on November 22/22 Marcheshvan, had a unique feature for the first time, an opening meeting included "the brotherhood" as well: When the menfolk of the community heard that Dr. Paul Breuer would be the featured speaker, on the topic of Seeing The World Through Jewish Eyes, they requested that the lecture be made available to all members of the Kehilla. After a brief, humorous introduction by Mr. Samson Bechhofer, Dr. Breuer distributed a handout of relevant photos and addressed the group. Dr. and Mrs. Breuer have traveled during the past ten years, more extensively in the most recent five years, since his retirement from his optometry practice (and his joining the Breuer's Kollel). Dr. Breuer chose to speak about his impressions of Scotland and Russia (and a bit about Alaska). Upon Rav Hirsch s return from Switzerland, someone questioned his having gone there. He responded that after one hundred twenty years when he would meet his Maker, HaKodosh Boruch Hu would ask him, "Have you seen My Alps?" Dr. Breuer too clearly experiences his travels as a man who wants to see the beauty and grandeur HaShem infused into His world. Dr. Breuer explained that the main two cities in Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow, are very different, with the former being more British and the latter with a decidedly more Scottish flavor. Glasgow is considered to be "the friendliest city in the world." Indeed, the Breuers felt the friendliness while visiting. On a tour of a whiskey distillery, they learned that the secret of superior Scotch whiskey is that the water used must pass through volcanic rocks. Glasgow University was the first to admit students who were not from the upper classes. Jewish life in Glasgow University is headed by their Chaplain, Rabbi Bodenheim, a nephew of our Kehilla's sofer. There is an active Chabad but Jewish life is dwindling rapidly. Up until recently there was a Kollel in Glasgow, headed by a Rav whose wife is a relative of Mrs. Eugene Goldman. Moscow, on the other hand, is a most decidedly unfriendly city. Even the flight attendants don't speak English. Dr. Breuer found the whole city to be very depressing. Alcoholism and crime are rampant. Life expectancy for men is 64. Jewish life in Moscow, however, is very positive especially as compared to how life was for Russian Jews in the past. Russia s president, Vladimir Putin, knew very kind Jewish people during his childhood to whom he is very grateful. It's hard to believe but public menorah lightings take place every year now on Chanukah in Red Square! Rav Yerucham Olshin, a Rosh Yeshiva at Beth

4 Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 4 Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, was at the dedication of a new Kollel in Moscow. At the dedication Rav Olshin said that the revival of Torah learning in Russia is "probably as big a Neis as Kerias Yam Suf!" Chabad is also very active in Russia, with 197 centers in the country. There is a very fascinating world out there. We thank Dr. Breuer for giving us a glimpse into foreign places and attitudes, whetting our appetites to share similar experiences, and for helping us appreciate the ease with which Orthodox Jewish life can be kept right here in New York! DR. LUCHINS LECTURES ON PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION In anticipation of the then-upcoming presidential election, the Senior Social Club of KAJ once again invited Dr. David Luchins to address our community. An old friend of the Kehilla (he has addressed our community under the stewardship of all our Rabbonim) Dr. Luchins who is also the chair of Touro College s Political Science department, national vice president of the Orthodox Union, and a longtime member on the staff of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan impressed the audience with his tremendous knowledge on presidential elections. Speaking on What s Good for the Jews? Dr. Luchins argued that both of the then-candidates were flawed, saying he had hoped in early 2015 that the election would have been between, whom he considered to be better candidates: Jeb Bush and Joe Biden. Citing stories of encounters with Gedolei Yisrael, Dr. Luchins also suggested that the Jewish community talk, first and foremost, about what is good for America, not what is good for Jews. He also argued that it would be a mistake for the Jewish community to place all its eggs in one basket, in either one of the political parties. Following the presentation, Dr. Luchins took questions from the audience, which very much enjoyed listening to him.

5 Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 5 SSC OF KAJ ENJOYS AN EVENING OF BEETHOVEN AND DVORAK On Motzoei Shabbos Parashas Chayei Sarah, a group of over 50 from the Senior Social Club of KAJ attended a classical concert at Lincoln Center s David Geffen Hall. On the program were Beethoven s Violin Concerto and Dvorak s Eighth Symphony. Now a classic, the Beethoven violin concerto apparently was relatively unpopular until almost four decades later. Dvorak s Eighth Symphony too was not appreciated outside Czechoslovakia until the mid-20th century. Both pieces, though, delighted the KAJ crowd, which was lucky to have seats in the orchestra section due to a generous extra donation. Iván Fischer, founder and music director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted and Nikolaj Znaider, who has played with the world s best orchestras, performed on the violin. AMUD HA AVODA The Kehilla has established the Amud Ha Avoda program which enables individuals to sponsor be the Amud Ha Avodah for the Kehilla s expenses for specific days. Therefore, it is forbidden to wear any man s, woman s or child s garment that contains wool or linen until it has been determined not to contain shaatnez. To determine whether your garment is shaatnez-free, garments may be dropped off at the Kehilla office, 714 W. 186 th Street at the following times: Weekdays 9:30 4:30 Fridays 9:30 12:00 If you are not available at these times, please make an appointment by ing shaatnez@kajinc.org. If you do not have , call and leave a message. Rabbi Kalman Strauss will test the garments on our premises. Please note that it is important to leave on tags with information where garment is manufactured and list of materials contained in it.
