KAJ NEWSLETTER A monthly publication of K hal Adath Jeshurun October 11, 18 ב' מרחשון תשע "ט Volume 49 Number 2 YEMEI SELICHOS On Motzo ei Shabbos Parashas Ki-Sovo, Chazon Ezra Lasdun ushered in the days of Selichos with the special intonation of VeHu Rachum. Chazon Lasdun also davened the first day s Selichos. The first day of Selichos, Sunday September 2/ 22 Elul, was also the Kehilla s annual communal visit to the Beis Olam. Transportation was provided. On Monday, September 3/ 23 Elul, the Kehilla broadcast the national Yom Iyun, by video. Many thanks to the gentlemen who served as Shelichei Tzibur for the days of Selichos in alphabetical order, our thanks go to Messrs. Samson Bechhofer, Shmuel Bodenheim, Alan Ettlinger, Michael Gutmann, Dr. Johny Hellmann, Ezra Hes, Herbert Israel, Pinchas Katzenstein, Theodore Levi, Leslie Lewin, Jacob Lowenthal, Moses Marx, Sidney Strauss, Rabbi Schemuel van Messel, Rabbi Leslie Weis and Rabbi Raphael Weis. During Elul, Rav Mantel spoke to the Sisterhood about the Yomim Noroim (see separate article). The two inaugural Shiurim of this season s Thursday night Chumash Shiurim, on September 6/ 26 Elul and September 13/ 4 Tishrei, were given respectively by Rabbi Lipa Geldwerth and Rav Yaakov Perlow on topics of the Yomim Noroim, as well as the Parashios hashovua. Rav Perlow spoke at our Beis Medrash as well (pictured below). During the Aseres Yemei Teshuva, Rav Mantel addressed the bochurim of the Yeshiva Gedola (pictured on next page).

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 2 All the classes in our Yeshiva learned about, and prepared themselves for the Yomim Noroim, according to their age levels. Mr. Ben Ettlinger captivated some very lucky pre-school audiences as he explained and demonstrated various types of Shoforos. ROSH HASHANA Rosh Hashana 5779 witnessed the Shul once again arrayed in pristine white, from the Poroches down to the carpeting, and extending to each and every seat box. Many thanks to Mr. Victor Sussman and his able crew for the enormous amount of work inherent in the Shul s KaShelleg Yalbinu transformation, and all the other preparations necessary for the Yomim Noroim in Shul. As is our custom, the Shul remained in white throughout the Aseres Yemei Teshuva. The Kehilla had the distinct privilege of Rebbetzin Gelley s coming to Washington Heights to spend Rosh Hashana with the Kehilla. In the able hands of the various Ba alei Tefilla, the Tefillos of the day, truly the focal point of the Yomim Noroim, were given the dignity and beauty that they deserve. Chazon Ezra Lasdun and Mr. Michael Gutmann davened Maariv on the first and second nights, respectively. Shacharis of Yom Aleph was led by Mr. Pinchas Katzenstein and that of Yom Beis by Mr. Theodore Levi. Chazon Lasdun davened Musaf on both days. Mincha on the two afternoons was davened by Messrs. Samson Bechhofer and Michael Gutmann, respectively. Mr. Victor Sussman and Chazon Ezra Hes officiated as Baalei Keriah on the two respective days. Messrs. Jacob Lowenthal and Ben Ettlinger shared the Shofar blowing. The first day s Shofar was preceded by the Rav s speaking, giving insight into the Kolos HaShofar. A grateful Kehilla acknowledges the tremendous amount of work and care put in by all our Chazonim, Baalei Keriah and Baalei Tokeiah, as well as the choir and Synagogue Committee, to ensure the proper sanctity of these days.

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 3 Many thanks to those gentlemen and boys who blew Shofar, whether at the hospital, nursing home, or at the homes of those unable to come to Shul. Likewise, we thank the young ladies of our Kehilla who so generously gave of their time to the babysitting service offered to young mothers on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur; Many thanks to Rebbetzin Mantel who personally organized this service once again this year. SHABBOS SHUVO Rav Mantel gave the traditional sermon before Musaf on Shabbos Shuvo. Among many other points, the Rav explained that the title, so to speak, of the Sefer HaChaim into which we all hope to be inscribed would be Sefer Beis Yisroel (as described in Sefer Yechezkel). Being part of the Klal is an extremely integral aspect of a Yehudi s life and mission. מעמיד דמעמיד In the afternoon, after Mincha, Rav Mantel delivered the pilpul derosho, on the subject of in the construction of a.סכה The bochurim of our Yeshiva Gedola, with Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz at their head, were present for both deroshos. YOM KIPPUR Yom Kippur was observed by our Kehilla in its awe-some solemnity. We again owe a debt of gratitude for the many hours spent in preparation by Chazon Lasdun, all our Ba alei Tefillo, and the choir, ensuring the Tefillos received the respect they deserve. Chazon Lasdun davened Kol Nidrei-Maariv and Musaf. Mr. Michael Gutmann led Shacharis, and Rabbi Raphael Weis davened Mincha. Rav Mantel concluded the day s Tefillos with Ne ilo. Thanks as well to the Ba alei Keriah, Dr. Johny Hellmann and Chazon Ezra Hes. Rav Mantel spoke after Kol Nidrei. Citing the well-known Gemara of Rav going to a butcher so that the latter, who had wronged him, could ask Rav s Mechila, Rav Mantel raised the question that since Rav was clearly ready to give his Mechila, why then had he felt it necessary to go to the butcher at all? In answering this, Rav Mantel discussed the requesting Mechila from one s fellow as something more than just only the requirement as per Din. The Rav also spoke briefly before Ne ilo, citing Rav Hirsch s peirush on the two identical goats, one LaShem and one LaAzozel. A person need not become someone else, after having made a sincere commitment to Avodas HaShem and an elevation of his Ruchniyus: He is the same person, who through his own free will, can choose to go in one of two diametrically opposed directions. SUKKOS With the complement of warm (and mainly dry) weather in Washington Heights, our Kehilla celebrated Z man Simchoseinu with much enthusiasm. Our Kehilla once again provided two large and attractive Sukkos for the use of members and other locals. Many thanks to Mr. Avram Gutmann for his work for the Kehilla s Sukkos; we also thank the young men who put up the Sechach of the Sukkos, Ezra Feigenbaum, Ary Levi, and Shua Levi The Levi brothers were then joined by Meir in the decorating part of the job, a task they accomplished with panache. The Sukkah on the large playground was used for catered meals on the Yom Tov days, provided by Lechayim Caterers; kudos to Mr. Yitzie Dyckman for the delicious meals, rain or shine. A number of men and boys also slept in the Sukkos, for which the Kehilla arranged overnight security on the Yom Tov nights.

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 4 Among those who ensured that Sukkos was celebrated as a Chag Kosher vesome ach are Rabbi L. Leslie Weis and family who once again provided the opportunity to purchase Arba ah Minim and Hoshanos. To say the least, this is neither an easy nor simple task, and the Kehilla salutes them. In our Yeshiva, the students prepared for Sukkos in various, most enjoyable, ways. Below left, Rabbi Yaakov Cohen s fifth grade class experience firsthand the dinim of Sukkos that they are learning in Mishnayos. Below right, Morah G. Aschkenasy s second grade Talmidos display some Noi Sukkah they very much enjoyed making. Chazon Lasdun led the tzibur in the Tefillos and Hoshanos of the Yom Tov days as well as Shabbos Chol HaMoed; Rabbi Avi Rogin led Mincha on the first two days of Yom Tov. Rav Mantel gave the Yom Tov lecture after Mincho on the second day of Yom Tov, discussing the aspect of golus, and the lessons therein inherent in the Sukkah. Providing more spiritual fare for the Yom Tov, Shiurim were once again held during Chol HaMoed, in the Beis Medrash. This was, as usual, arranged by Rabbi Chaim Aschkenasy, whom we thank. The Magidei Shiur were Rabbi Yisroel Perlow (pictured) and Rabbi Lipa Geldwerth.

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 5 The Pirchei and B nos groups of Washington Heights, under the leadership of, respectively, Rabbi Menachem Kunofsky and Misses Chani Rogin and Miriam Stern, enjoyed some Chol HaMoed fun, with trips to, respectively, Rock em Extreme (rock climbing) and Chuck E. Cheese s. On the afternoon of Shabbos Chol HaMoed, the Kehilla enjoyed the annual Shabbos-Chol HaMoed Sukkos- Seudo- Shelishis. Rav Mantel delivered a D var Halocho on the topic of Mezuza in a Sukka (in particular one which is a room of one s home, with only the roof replaced by Sechach), and Zemiros were sung. On Hoshana Rabba night (Motzoei Shabbos), the men and boys gathered in Moller Hall for the learning. After the siyum of Sefer Devorim, Rav Mantel spoke about the idea of Sukkah being a Mitzvah Kalla, and yet, in some sense, shekula kenegged kol hamitzvos, as the piyyut declares. SHEMINI ATZERES-SIMCHAS TORAH Beginning with the Pizmonim Kaddish of Shemini Atzeres Mincho, and continuing throughout Simchas Torah in the Tefillos, Duchanen, Kerias HaTorah, and extending all the way through Yigdal, An im Zemiros and Adon Olam, the full Yahres-selection of tunes was rendered. As was mentioned during the Simchas

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 6 Torah party, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Chazon Lasdun and the other Baalei Tefilla, as well as to the choir. Chazon Lasdun led most of the days Tefillos; Mr. Samson Bechhofer davened Mincha on the two days, and Mr. Yoseph Levi davened Shacharis of Simchas Torah morning. On Shemini Atzeres Rav and Rebbetzin Mantel hosted the Matnas Yad reception, allowing a grateful Kehilla to thank the Rav for the Berochos bestowed upon them that morning, and to fulfill the dictum of Chazal (Rosh HaShana 16:), to greet one s Rav on Yom Tov. The evening and morning of Simchas Torah saw spirited Hakofos and dancing. Special thanks to the following gentlemen who helped Chazon Lasdun and led some of the Hakofos: Messrs. Yitzy Ettlinger, Chaim Gordimer, Rabbi Yitzchak Hellmann, Rabbi Kalman Strauss and Mr. Yoseph Levi. In the evening, it was Messrs. Samson Bechhofer and Avram Gutmann dancing with Chazon Lasdun and the Sifrei Torah, while in the morning, Messrs. Avram Cahn and Alan Ettlinger did the honors. The Simchas Torah Party took place in Moller Hall after Mincha. The dais was graced by Rav Mantel, as well as some of the Chassonim, among others. Chazon Lasdun led the singing of a selection of Yom Tov Zemiros. Mr. Alan Ettlinger both emceed as well as gave the annual State of the Kehilla address. Mr. Ettlinger mentioned that strategic planning is necessary, and will IY H be done, to ensure that our Kehilla and Yeshiva remain vibrant and grow. He noted the successfully completed projects on our infrastructure, including the new air conditioning units in Shul, and new roofing, as well as major repairs, in the Broadway building. Mr. Ettlinger also expressed his thanks, on behalf of the Kehilla, to our Rabbonim. Both Rav Mantel and Mr. Ettlinger thanked and praised all the various people and groups who work on the Kehilla s behalf. In his address, Rav Mantel connected Sukkos-Shemini Atzeres to Chanuka (according to the Medrash that Shemini Atzeres was intended to have been seven weeks after Sukkos, that would place it somewhere in Kisleiv) and noted that they both bear the message of not assimilating with the prevalent culture, not absorbing alien ideals from the outside. Rabbi Yisroel Strauss, this year s Chosson Bereishis, was the last speaker. Among recollections, Divrei Torah, and even a true-to-dikduk-and-spelling Gematria; Rabbi Strauss also let the Kehilla know, as an afterthought, that although this is the longest possible year of the calendar cycle, Pesach was, nevertheless, just 28 weeks and three days away! At this point, KAJN takes the opportunity to wish all the Chassanei Torah and Bereishis a hearty Mazel Tov. We hope and pray that all the Brochos bestowed upon them come to fruition. THE SHUL IS COOL! The installation of the new air-conditioning system was completed in time for the Yomim Noroim. Although there are still a few technical adjustments that need to be made, we are grateful that we were able to resume davening in our Bais HaKnesses in a comfortable atmosphere, especially considering the continued warm temperatures. As of this writing, we have raised almost $87, to cover the cost of this major undertaking. We are very thankful to everyone who has participated in this effort and ask that everyone who has not yet sent in their contribution to please do so now. We would also like to suggest that those of you who have already contributed consider increasing your initial pledge. A plaque with the names of all the sponsors is now being prepared and will be mounted in the shul lobby. Donations can still be sent to the office or you can pay online at

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 7 SISTERHOOD LECTURE The inspirational words Rav Mantel offered the women in his pre-yom Tov Shiur on August 29/19 Elul helped us enter the Aseres Yemei Teshuva in the proper frame of mind. The Rav began his shiur by asking if Rosh Hashana is part of the Aseres Yemei Teshuva, why do we almost not at all mention our sins and ask for pardon on that day? In answer, he gave the following example: If during a time when a mortal king's rule is being challenged (e.g. during a revolt/wartime) one of the king s subjects comes to ask the king for personal assistance, he is being a disloyal subject. When the king is in distress, that is the time to offer the king whatever you can, not to request or demand things from him! So, too, when our King's sovereignty is concealed in the world it is our job to help reveal His Kingship, not to come to Him with our private requests (i.e. health, parnossa, forgiveness, etc.). One of the main goals on Rosh Hashana is to partner keveyochol with HaKodosh Boruch Hu and to act as a loyal servant does, to cause people to recognize that He is King. The yardstick of the judgment of Yom HaDin is whether we think of our own needs or of G-d's needs. On the words Mi Kamocha B'eilim Hashem (who is like You among the Powerful, HaShem?), Chazal famously state: Do not read B'eilim but B'ilmim (among the mute). The Tomer Devora writes that, keveyochol, HaKodosh Boruch Hu suffers silently and bears the insults that are sent His way. He gives us hands, feet, lips and we do aveiros with them. He gives us breath and we use our life to commit actions that are forbidden. He could take away the use of our limbs; He could snuff out our breath. It is part of His greatness that He bears such egregious actions of ours. This mida of astounding concealment is one we need to be cognizant of and to emulate, if we are to be able to relate to Hashem, at all. Concealment is the essence of tznius. A precious diamond is sold in a box that closes tight. Potatoes, on the other hand, are not sold in a box. Reality and value are the internal, not the external. People should, for example, do some maaseh chessed (kindness) that they will not talk about, not now and not later not such an easy task! This is already a somewhat higher level of the mida of Tznius. It goes without saying though it cannot be overemphasized that the fundamentals of Tznius must be kept: dress, tone of voice, hairstyle etc. One should be able to look at a Yehudi and see from how this person conducts him/herself that this person is an Eved HaShem. When Jews act the way they should, this hastens the Geula (redemption). Doing the opposite makes the world say, Could it be that the true G-d is the G-d of such people,?!! thus not allowing HaShem to reveal Himself, for it would only result in a Chilul HaShem, chas vesholom. May this coming year be a year of Geula when G-d's Kingship is revealed to all! NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER Moriah contributed a significant upgrade to the hall over the summer. Five new folding tables were purchased as well as 250 brand new upholstered folding chairs. We are so happy to share these with the shul, the school and anyone else who makes use of the hall. The weather could not have been better for our Great Tree Walk at Wave Hill. Author and naturalist Leslie Day took us through hidden pathways and scenic vistas as we learned intriguing information about the many different and unique trees, from linden to redwood, to variegated dogwood and elms, in this

Vol. 49, No. 2 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 8 gem of a park. We even spied paw paw fruit, grapes and gourds growing on trees, vines and trellises throughout the park. It was unanimously agreed upon that we need to return in the fall to see the foliage on these majestic trees. Moriah s annual Senior Bais HaShoeva Sukka party took place under the most perfect weather conditions, on Thursday of Chol Hamoed. Cantor Eric S. Freeman once again donated his time to provide buoyant Yom Tov music to accompany the festive atmosphere and delicious food. Serving nearly 100 seniors in two separate locations could not have been accomplished without the skillful help of our Yeshiva volunteers Ezra and Ephraim Feigenbaum, Ary and Meir Levi and Eliezer Rosenstock. This feat was pulled off seemingly effortlessly by these talented young men who understand the importance and value of giving back to the community. They are to be commended. SAVE THE DATE! Moriah will be offering free flu shots to seniors on Wednesday, October 17 th. Advance registration is required. Please bring your Medicare and/or other insurance cards, along with your doctor s name and phone number to the Moriah office at your earliest convenience. Moriah is actively seeking volunteers to assist with check-in and lunch service. Volunteer for an hour, volunteer once a week, or volunteer more often. The choice is yours.
