Israeli Wines: There are currently Shemitta wines on the U.S. market (for example Yarden-Golan Heights) that are sold באיסור even though the label says Otzar Beis Din (which implies that they are distributed for a minimal fee and only in Eretz Yisroel). These wines should not be purchased. For other wines, check for a good hashgocha that keeps Shemitta. SHOVUOS 5776 Our Beis Knesses was once again resplendent in flowers and greenery, as befitting Zman Mattan Toroseinu. Since this transformation began about two days before Shabbos-Yom Tov, some of our Yeshiva s classes were able to catch a glimpse of the work in progress. On the Thursday night prior to Yom Tov, Rabbi Yisroel Perlow gave the Chumash shiur, including Inyanei Shovuos. Our many thanks go to Mr. Avram Gutmann, who, as he has done for decades, coordinated and executed the work. He was assisted by his son, Mr. Michael Gutmann. Please turn to page 21 for a listing of the donors who contributed so generously towards the flower decorations.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 2 Chazon Ezra Lasdun davened both days of Yom Tov, with Mr. Michael Gutmann leading Mincha on the first day. Mr. Yosef Levi leined and read the Akdomus on the first day, and Rabbi Kalman Strauss leined the second day. Mr. Yehuda Rosenstock both davened and leined at the first day s Hashkama (4:15 AM) Minyan. Thanks are due to them all, as well as the Choir, for ensuring the dignity and beauty of the Tefillos. The annual Shovuos-night learning took place in both the Beis Medrash and Moller Hall. The young men of our Yeshiva Gedola helped swell the Kol Torah through the night. Rav Mantel spoke to the Yeshiva on Friday night before מעריב בזמנו and for the Kehilla on the first night of Yom Tov. Rav Mantel gave the Yom Tov lecture on the first day of Shovuos, after Mincha. On the second day of Yom Tov, before Musaf, Rav Mantel spoke in shul. In the afternoon, a Matnas Yad reception was held at the home of Rav and Rebbetzin Mantel, allowing a grateful Kehilla to thank the Rav for the Brochos bestowed during Matnas Yad, as well as to fulfill the dictum of Chazal, to visit one s Rav on Yom Tov. After Mincha, a Neilas HaChag was held in Moller Hall, in which the bachurim of our Yeshiva Gedola took part (pictured below, dancing after nacht). Mr. Alan Ettlinger, in his introductory remarks, noted that the yahrzeit of the Kehillla s long-standing Rosh HaKohol, Moreinu Dr. Raphael Moller, is on Isru Chag Shovuos. He thanked the Moller family for their sponsorship of the event. He also mentioned the upcoming first yahrzeit of Dr. Erich Erlbach, on the eleventh of Sivan. Both Rav Mantel and Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz spoke.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 3 SHABBOS CHIZUK The Kehilla enjoyed its annual Shabbos Chizuk on Shabbos Parashas Naso. A sit-down Kiddush, cosponsored by the Senior Social Club, was held in Moller Hall after Shul at which Rav Mantel and the special guest, Rabbi Dovid Fishman, spoke. Later that afternoon, Moller Hall was once again in use, as the end-of-season Seuda Shelishis was enjoyed. Rabbi Yitzchak Israel led the proceedings and reminded all those present that although Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman s health does not allow him to keep up his annual visits to the Kehilla, his Kollel Rashbi is in just as much need of our generous support. Rabbi Israel also acknowledged the presence of Rebbetzin Gelley, and expressed the Kehilla s ongoing fervent wishes for a Refuah Sheleima for the Rav. In his address, Rav Mantel explained what the chachomim of Shevet Yissachar understood when they suggested the idea of the Nisiim s first korbonos, wagons and oxen for the transport of the Mishkan: Without the means to travel along to all the various circumstances and places Bnei Yisroel would encounter, the Mishkan would not be on firm footing even when it might appear to be. So too, we must ensure that our Shemiras HaTorah umitzvos will only grow stronger over the summer, and not, chalila, the opposite. The Sota is told that yayin (taavos of this world), sechok, yaldus (misplaced naiveté and innocence) and shecheinim haraim all may have terrible, detrimental effects, things we must watch out for, especially over the summer. Rabbi Fishman, a former twelfth grade rebbi in our Mesivta, and now Rosh Yeshiva of his Yeshivas Keser Torah in Monsey, reminisced and expressed his Hakoras HaTov to the Kehilla. He stressed the vigilance with which we must approach all the technology which surrounds us. Additionally, Rabbi Fishman gave a shiur on Inyonei Daf Yomi, after the Seuda Shelishis. DR. ERICH ERLBACH, z.l. The first yahrzeit of Dr. Erich Erlbach, our unforgettable Rosh HaKohol, was marked on the eleventh of Sivan, this year, Friday, June 17 th. His loss continues to be felt keenly by the Kehilla he so faithfully served and led. We wish and pray that the innumerable zechuyos Dr. Erlbach accrued, through his work on behalf of the Tzibur and his own sterling Avodas Hashem and Limud HaTorah, redound to both his family and the Kehilla. KOLLEL BREAKFAST יהי זכרו ברוך The annual Kollel Breakfast was held on May 30/22 Iyar in Moller Hall. The dais was graced by the presence of Rav Mantel, Rav Meir Levi and Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz, and Rabbi Joel Stern, the breakfast s chair. Rabbi Stern reminded those present that the event was being sponsored by the Simons family, in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Ruth Simons, and Ezriel Betzalel Simons,ע"ה son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Simons,.יבדל"ח Rabbi Stern also noted the absence of Rav Gelley, wishing him a continued Refuah Sheleima.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 4 Rav Mantel opened with his annual Brocha to the Kollel, but not before quoting the Maharal, who explains that to be Mekabel the Torah one needs a special place, and that is why Maseches Avos begins with the words Moshe kibel Torah MiSinai. We learn from this the full dedication required for Kabolas HaTorah from Sinai, for once there was Kabolas HaTorah, no plowing or planting was ever permitted there. Limud HaTorah, too, requires dedication. Mr. Yosef Potesky, one of the Chavrei HaKollel, spoke on the topics the Kollel has been learning in kashrus, and raised some hypothetical questions on the topics of basar/chalav. Rabbi Stern (father-in-law of Mr. Potesky), offered his Hakoras HaTov to the Kollel, having spent a Zeman learning the night Seder with them. He also extended the Kollel s best wishes to Rabbi Ephraim Wolpin, who headed the night seder s Chabura, who is moving to Lakewood with his family. Rav Levi gave brief Divrei Hesped in memory of Ezriel Simons. He quoted a Medrash which tells us that when a person is niftar, HaShem sends Malochim to this world to find out if the niftar was a Yorei Shomayim. Rav Levi reminded everyone that Ezriel had many friends and was actively involved in helping them stay on the proper derech. Rav Levi concluded with the annual appeal for the Kollel, and Mr. Jonathan Simons led the bensching. DAF YOMI SIYUM SEDER NOSHIM The חבורות דף יומי completed מסכת קידושין וסדר נשים on Wednesday כ "ג אייר. They celebrated this milestone on the following Sunday morning with a breakfast סיום which was coordinated by Mr. Michael Gutmann. The סיום was graced with the presence of Rav Mantel שליט"א and Rav Posen שליט"א and a number of the veteran members of the Chaburo. Mr. Michael Gutmann, one of our regular שיעור,מגידי was מסיים and said the.הדרן He elucidated the Rav Mantel then delivered a discourse connecting.גמרא on the last piece of the פני יהושע of the פשט.בבא קמא with the beginning of קידושין the end of

We need a number of new שיעור.מגידי A number of our regular presenters have not been able to say the Shiur recently. If you are able and willing to say a Shiur once a week, please contact Elchonon Stern or Alan Ettlinger. GENERAL MEETING The Kehilla s general meeting was held on Sunday, May 22. Mr. Samson Bechhofer opened the meeting with the traditional Dvar Torah, noting that קדושים תהיו is a very tall order especially coming after the Arayos of מות.אחרי By being a part of the עדה we can each achieve the level of קדושה to which we all aspire. He also noted that Rav Gelley requires a continued Refuo Sheleimo and urged that all that we will do for the Kehilla be done as a zechus for the Rav. Mr. Danny Levi then intoned the names of those members who passed away in Mr. Bechhofer noted particularly the passing of Dr. Erlbach and expressed how much he is missed by all. Mr. Bechhofer asked the membership to note that the portion of our members who live in Washington Heights has dwindled; as such he noted that the expectation of the community members has to be adjusted. One way in which this is reflected is in the establishment this year of a single daily Mincha

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 6 minyan during the summer months. Another example of this reality is reflected in the finances of the Kehilla as income is down as a result and expenses are not commensurate with that. As a result he noted the sale of the remaining apartments owned by the Kehilla and the subsequent relocation of the Rav s study. The President also encouraged members to remember the Kehilla in their estate planning. At the meeting, the membership requested the Board to create a committee to develop recommendations for improving the current election process. The committee has been formed and has already met. At its first meeting after the General Membership Meeting, the Board of Trustees elected the following officers: President Alan Ettlinger Vice President Yehonoson Rothschild Vice President Samson R. Bechhofer Treasurer Avram J. Cahn Assistant Treasurer David Hoff Secretary Daniel A. Levi Trustee Dr. Johny Hellmann ANNUAL P EYLIM/ LEV L ACHIM GATHERING On Thursday evening, June 23/ 11Sivan, the annual gathering in support of Eretz Yisroel s premier kiruv organization, P eylim/lev Achim was held. After introductory remarks by Mr. Avram Cahn, who noted this is the 13 th year of the Kehilla s partnering with P eylim, those in attendance heard from Rav Mantel and Rabbi Eliyahu Meir Klugman. A video presentation was shown featuring some of the young men P eylim had influenced, now themselves Lomdei and Marbitzei Torah in their own communities across Eretz Yisroel. GRADUATIONS Pre-Mesivta Graduation The eighth graders of our Pre-Mesivta celebrated their commencement on Tuesday evening, June14/ 8 Sivan. The proceedings were emceed by Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik, Menahel of the Mesivta. Rav Mantel shared Divrei Brocha with the boys, wishing them Hatzlacha as they continue in their Limudim in high school. The Parent Representative to speak was Rabbi Eitan Berman (father of graduate Elisha Berman), who expressed the parents thanks for all that which the Yeshiva has done and does for its students. Rabbi Berman noted that those boys leaving YRSRH have been accepted into some of the best high schools, a credit to their foundations from our Yeshiva. Avraham Zev Sobolofsky spoke on behalf of his class, giving very efficacious thanks to all their rebbeim and teachers, whom he mentioned individually by name. In his address to the graduates, Rabbi Avraham Hoffman, General Studies principal of the Mesivta, urged the boys to elevate the worldly to the Kodesh, noting that it was this in which Avraham Avinu excelled, and was with which Moshe Rabbeinu convinced the Malachim of the correctness of giving the Torah over to earthly man. Diplomas were then distributed by Rabbi Soloveitchik and Rabbi Hoffman, but not before each boy was presented by Rabbi Hoffman with a copy of the new, English-language sefer, Rav Schwab on Chumash.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 7 We wish a hearty Mazal Tov to all the young men as they embark on their high school careers. Many thanks to the mothers, Mesdames Berman and Korn, as well as the Mesivta s indefatigable secretary, Mrs. Sarah Bass, who helped set up. Mesivta Graduation On Wednesday, June 15/ 9 Sivan, the twelve graduates of the Mesivta s class of 5776/2016 walked in to the familiar strains of the processional music. After the playing of the national anthem, Rabbi Shraga Soloveitchik welcomed everyone, and introduced Rav Mantel, the first speaker. The Rav noted that while he was speaking as the Rav of our Kehilla, he could not but also speak as a very grateful parent, and thanked the Yeshiva for what it has done for Yehoshua Asher and his older brothers, making special note of Rabbi Soloveitchik s extraordinary dedication to his students. Rabbi Chaim Packer (father of graduate Aharon Packer) spoke on behalf of the parents, drawing four lessons from the Mishna we read recently in Pirkei Avos (4:5), of the rewards promised to a lomeid al menas lelamed and a lomeid al menas la asos. Rabbi Packer also announced the special tribute which Mrs. Ruthie Feigenbaum (mother of graduate Shaya Feigenbaum) then presented to the Mesivta s veteran secretary, Mrs. Sarah Bass. Avrohom Dovid Levy was the Class Representative. In his speech, he thanked the Mesivta s administration and staff, both Kodesh and Chol, and noted that, literally or at least figuratively, the graduates must strive to ensure there is never more than a Techum Shabbos, 2000 Amma, between them and a Beis Medrash, just like the distance Bnei Yisroel were to have between them and the Mishkan. Rabbi Yehoshua Fulda (father of graduate Nesanel Fulda) introduced and thanked Rabbi Avraham Hoffman for his extraordinary efforts and input into his students, beginning as their first grade rebbi, meeting them again as their fifth-grade General Studies teacher, and then serving as the Mesivta s General Studies principal, not once but twice, coming out of retirement from this position purely for the Yeshiva s wellbeing. Rabbi Fulda wished Rabbi Hoffman much Hatzlacha in his re-retirement from the Mesivta. In his address, Rabbi Hoffman stressed keeping the right perspective on things as the graduates will proceed into the post-high school world. Rabbi Soloveitchik expressed his special gratitude to Mr. Jonathan Simons, the Yeshiva s Executive Director, and wished him much simcha and nachas in the coming years. Rabbi Soloveitchik also thanked the PTA and the Ladies Auxiliary for their gracious funding of the Mesivta s many special projects. The diplomas were then presented by Rabbi Soloveitchik and Rabbi Hoffman, with Rabbi Soloveitchik saying a few words about each boy. Best wishes and Hatzlacha to the graduates, and many thanks to the mothers who helped set up, Mesdames Ruthie Feigenbaum and Judy Fulda. Bais Yaakov Middle School The Middle School held its commencement celebration on the evening of Thursday, June 16/10 Sivan. Rabbi Edwin Katzenstein, chairman of the Yeshiva s Board addressed those present, after which Rav Mantel addressed the graduates and their guests, noting that if it is Boruch Atta Bevoecha, one has a positive outlook when beginning something, it will be Boruch Atta Betzeisecha, joy at the end. With their

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 8 positive attitudes, the girls have completed their first eight years of schooling, and can look forward to the upcoming years of high school. The girls Limudei Kodesh and Limudei Chol principals, Mrs. Hena Gotteman and Mrs. Diane Lanzkron, both spoke, after which the audience heard from the Parent Representative, Rabbi Aharon Ciment (father of graduate Tziporah Ciment). The Limudei Kodesh and General Studies valedictorians, Miss Miriam Levsky and Miss Tamar Spoerri, spoke, after which awards and diplomas were distributed. Bais Yaakov D Rav Hirsch Sunday June 19/13 Sivan saw Bais Yaakov D Rav Hirsch graduate its tenth class, including Misses Sarah Rosenstock and Aliza Rubinstein, the school s two Washington Heights representatives. Those present heard from Mrs. Rochel Frankel, Limudei Kodesh principal; Rabbi Pinchas Jung, one of the members of the faculty; and Dr. Aidy Salomon, General Studies principal, as well as the valedictorians. Honors, awards, and diplomas were presented. We wish the girls and all the graduates much Brocha vehatzlocha in all their endeavors. Many thanks to Mrs. Sarah Bass, Rabbi Avraham Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. David Rubinstein, and Mrs. Yehudis Wolpin for much of the above information. TWO SISTERHOOD LECTURES The Yom Tov of Shavuos is full of beautiful minhagim and halochos. On Wednesday, June 1/ 25 Iyar the Sisterhood had the privilege of hearing from Rav Mantel, who discussed many interesting aspects of the Chag. The Rav mentioned some reasons brought down for the Minhag of eating Milchig on Shovuos, and then delved into the related halochos. Some examples included determining what Bracha Rishona and Acharona to make on cheesecake or blintzes, the procedure for eating a fleishig meal or foods soon after milchigs, and how long small children must wait after fleischigs. The Rav elaborated on the status of pareve foods or leftovers cooked in a fleishig pot. The Rav also discussed general Hilchos Yom Tov, including how to deal with wax residue left in the candlesticks on Yom Tov, how Borei Me'orei Ha'eish is fulfilled in Kiddush YaKNeHa Z, some of the differences between using a gas stove and an electric stove insofar as cooking on Yom Tov is concerned, and hachana, as it regards taking something frozen out for the next night of Yom Tov. These were just some of the fascinating topics the Rav covered during the shiur. The women left with a much better understanding of what is permissible and what is forbidden on Yom Tov. Also in honor of the upcoming holiday of Shavuos the Sisterhood had the pleasure of hearing Mrs. Chaya Sorscher Levy give us words of inspiration, on June 7/ 2 Sivan. Quoting thoughts from the late Rav Gedalia Schorr, Rav Shimshon Pincus, Rav Shlomo Freifeld and Rebbetzen Zehava Braunstein she developed a theme expounding the connection between Shavuos and the judgement of Peiros Ho Ilan (fruits of the tree), utilizing the chag as an opportunity to work on being happy to have the zechus of being a Jew. There is a remez (hint) in the seemingly superfluous letter hei in the word HaShishi, the sixth day of Creation. HaShishi means the sixth, an allusion to the sixth of Sivan. The purpose of Creation was the giving of the Torah. When Bnei Yisrael accepted the Torah at Har Sinai they declared Naase VeNishma.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 9 Being on an exceptionally high level, the Jews were actually already keeping mitzvos. In making this declaration they were inviting HaKodosh Boruch Hu to infuse their actions with His spirituality, because the fulfillment of mitzvos has a different meaning when it is done out of intuition or as a response to a commandment. Each mitzvah has its own power. The effects of the mitzvos are not known to us; we need to keep them regardless. The result of Bnei Yisrael saying Naase VeNishma ( we will DO and we will LISTEN ) was each person being crowned with two crowns. Crowns are symbolic and, in this case, represent the perfect human being. The ideal kind of doing is when a person chooses to do an action that is in sync with his inner values on every level. Proper listening involves asking oneself difficult questions about one s role and listening to what HaShem is requesting that we do. At that moment when we were crowned we were like Adam HaRishon Kodem HaCheit/Adam before he sinned. He was a man so perfect that the angels wanted to bow down to him as a deity. But just as Adam sinned, our perfection at Har Sinai was also short-lived. After only 40 days we created the Eigel HaZahav. And yet, even though our status of perfection was tainted, the declaration of Naase VeNishma can never be erased. We celebrate a thirteen-year-old s entering the world of Kabolas Ol Mitzvos the day he turns thirteen, even though he didn't do anything yet: We celebrate his potential. We as Klal Yisroel have unlimited potential as well. That feeling of being a Jew who was granted the opportunity to partner with G-d in spreading His spirituality through Kiyum HaMitzvos creates the euphoria characteristic of this festival. Therefore, Shovuos needs no special Mitzvos like the other holidays; the sheer joy of having the potential to grow through Torah is all-consuming LADIES AUXILIARY BRUNCH On Sunday morning, May 29/21 Iyar, four very worthy women were honored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch at their annual Spring Brunch: Mrs. Ruthie Katzenstein (Guest of Honor), Rebbetzin Faygie Willig (Grandmother of the Year), Mrs. Sarah Herbsman (Mother of the Year) and Mrs. Helen Ettlinger (Faculty Awardee). Mrs. Cindy Klugmann, Mistress of Ceremonies Extraordinaire, opened the gathering with the recital of a kapittel of Tehilim and a reminder that when we give to an institution it also gives so much to us ("So, to everyone here, 'Thank you' and 'You're welcome!'"). She introduced all the awardees, as well as our esteemed Rebbetzin Angeline Gelley. Rebbetzen Gelley began by telling everyone how much she missed us and how grateful she and the Rav are to everyone for their continued Tefillos and well wishes. In her inimitable style, the Rebbetzin creatively was able to compare the four honorees to the main minhagim of Shavuos: -One theory posits that the minhag to eat milchig on Shavuos comes from Bnai Yisroel's realization that, since they hadn't yet learned the halachos of kashrus, their keilim were treif. They had to come up with another plan. Rebbetzin Willig uses her artistic and creative talents for the betterment of her family and congregation. She is resilient and can improvise when bumps in the road crop up. -When the Torah was about to be given at Har Sinai Bnai Yisroel were still asleep. We stay up all night to make up for the lack of readiness on our part. Sarah Herbsman, on the other hand, is always readyready to share, to help, to laugh with others. With her Simchas HaChaim and desire to fulfill the Retzon Hashem, Sarah is an "everyone's mother."

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 10 -There is a minhag to put greenery around our shuls and our homes in honor of the Yom Tov to commemorate how greenery grew on the usually rocky and barren Har Sinai. Morah Helen takes the youngest students and helps them sprout and blossom under her capable and loving tutelage. She is their first introduction to formal education and structure. -We read Megillas Rus. The significance of this sefer is to teach us about the power of chessed. Ruthie Katzenstein is a pillar of the community, who, like her namesake, exemplifies chessed. Each of the honorees had an opportunity to movingly address the large crowd who gathered to give them well-deserved kovod. Every awardee, in her own unique way, thanked the Yeshiva for what they and their families gained from being connected to it and for allowing them to show their Hakaras hatov at this Brunch. They, in turn, were given tribute by their children/family members and colleagues. One mother wrote and sang an original song in honor of Morah Helen aka Mrs. Ettlinger. Special thanks to Mr. Yitzchok Dyckman of Lechayim Caterers for a delicious meal, and to the young ladies of our community who stepped up to the plate (literally) to serve as waitresses and to babysit. (Many of these girls pitched in out of loyalty to the Yeshiva/Kehilla even though they attend schools which are not affiliated with YRSRH!) Thanks to all the members of the Ladies Auxiliary who planned and executed such a beautiful event; from the sunflower theme to the choice of honorees, everything was perfect! And, most important, much appreciation goes to all the magnanimous sponsors who showed their commitment to our Yeshiva in a most generous way. FROM OUR YESHIVA Our Yeshiva s various divisions enjoyed a successful Spring Zeman. Below, the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz, gives a Shiur reviewing a sugya in Yevomos which the Yeshiva has been learning for the past few weeks. Pictured far below, our Yeshiva s elementary department enjoyed a Medura and some singing on Lag BaOmer, before heading out on their trip to Inwood Hill Park.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 11 SENIOR SOCIAL CLUB OF KAJ - NEWPORT, R.I. & CAPE COD, MA A Travel Diary by Mr. Henry Lehmann We just returned home from a most incredible trip to Newport, R.I. and Cape Cod, MA. Our journey began early Sunday morning with a bit of a rough start through the rainy and windy weather of New York. First stop was a quiet lunch break at Easton Beach in R.I. where some relaxed, some collected sea shells and others enjoyed a carousel ride (with the music turned off, especially for us due to the Omer). Our first real stop was the recently refurbished Touro Synagogue, the oldest functioning synagogue in the United States. What a wonderful experience to see a 500-plus year-old Sefer Torah written on deer skin and to hear how this synagogue symbolized the hope of the early American people to further religious freedoms and tolerance of beliefs. In his famous letter To The Hebrew Congregation in Newport, George Washington wrote: give bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 12 With these words he eloquently defined the new nation s standard for religious freedom and civil liberties. Next stop, a grand bus tour of the mansions and wonderful architecture of Newport, given by a very well-informed tour guide, Tammy. Exhausted from the long drive and inspired by our experiences of the day, we continued on to Chabad of West Bay in Warwick where we were wonderfully hosted by Rabbi Laufer, his wife and their children. We enjoyed a sumptuous meal accompanied by a talk by our own Mrs. Resnick about her journey From Showbiz to Shabbat together with many members of their Jewish community. We also visited the remarkable Mikva they had just completed constructing. As our eyes began to close and our heads droop, our rooms at the Holiday Inn Express were awaiting us. Day two began with Shacharis and a wonderfully-prepared breakfast of bagels with all the trimmings, fresh fruit and drinks. We also prepared our own boxed lunches for the day. Next an electronicallyguided tour of the Breakers Mansion, a surviving jewel of the New York Central Railroad fortune, built as a summer retreat for the Cornelius Vanderbilt family. Having our fill of interiors, we proceeded to a relaxing cruise aboard the Amazing Grace ferry in Newport Harbor. On the cruise we passed many of the mansions, as well as the home of Jack and Jackie Kennedy the summer White House. Next was the majestic Cliff Walk, bordering the grounds of the many mansions and their marvelous views of the ocean. Having enjoyed Newport, we were now on our way to Cape Cod and Hyannis, MA. First was a guided tour of Hyannis with a quick stop at the JFK Memorial and a visit to the Korean War Veterans Memorial where we paid our respects to those who made the supreme sacrifice to preserve our liberties and freedoms on these shores. Mincha took place at Chabad of Cape Cod where we were served a delicious hot supper. Interestingly, we discovered that a number of the congregants had purchased second homes for Shabbos just to be within walking distance of the Minyan and religious atmosphere. Exhausted from a long day, we finally departed for the Holiday Inn Hyannis and a well-deserved night s sleep. Our first stop on Tuesday, our third day, was a visit to the JFK Museum; we also had an opportunity to drive past the Kennedy Compound and the various Kennedy homes built along the waters of Nantucket Sound. Our next stop was the town of Sandwich, MA, the oldest on the Cape and home of the famous Sandwich glass factory. For 62 years it manufactured the most marvelous pieces of glassware which are valued still today and can be worth many thousands of dollars if in good condition. All that is left of this company is the museum which houses a wonderful display of original glassware and has glassblowing demonstrations every day. Our next stop was the Cape Cod Canal, which is wider than the Panama Canal and connects Buzzards Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The idea of constructing a canal was first considered in 1623 but

Vol. 46, No. 9 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 13 construction did not begin until The canal was finally completed and opened in Seagoing vessels and shippers saved traveling over 100 miles around the Cape in their quest of getting to and from the Atlantic Ocean. From here we travelled a short distance to Plymouth Rock, the supposed point of the Pilgrims landing and the establishment of their new colony in 1620.The Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower which has been faithfully replicated and had, fortunately for us, just arrived from Plymouth, England the day before. From here it was a very short ride to view the National Monument to the Forefathers. Our last stop was a visit to Pilgrim Hall Museum, dedicated to preserving and displaying the artifacts and lifestyle of the arriving Pilgrims. We learned of the harsh conditions under which they arrived and lived. Over half of the colonists died within the first nine months of their arrival. They came with little and discovered a land full of difficulties and surprises. But from these meager and small beginnings grew the establishment of these United States of America which, with all its scars and failures, is still the most free and democratic nation in the history of civilization. Onward and homeward! Following a delicious roadside dinner of fried chicken, we arrived home shortly before 10:00 PM. All in all it was a most marvelous educational and enjoyable trip. Many thanks to Mrs. Molly Resnick for her preparations and many months of hard work in organizing this trip and to Ms. Nili Shore for her assistance.
