AA30 Shemot (Exodus) 12:40,41; Galatians 3:16,17 Time o promises to time o the Exodus. Your irst question may be, How do we know the Promise o the land o Canaan was given to Avraham 430 years prior to Mt. Sinai? 3

4 Beginning in B resheet (Genesis) 12:1,7 Avraham is Promised the land o Canaan as a possession to him and his descendants. In Ma aseh (Acts) 7:2,3 it is stated that this Promise was given to Avraham prior to his departure to Haran. B resheet (Genesis) 12:4 states that Avraham let Haran at age 75; by this we can see that he was given the Promise sometime beore age 75. Galatians 3:16,17 states that this Promise was given 430 years prior to the exodus rom Egypt. B resheet 15:13 states that Avraham s descendants would live as oreigners or 400 years in land that is not their own. Avraham s irst descendant through Sarah was Yit zak (Isaac). B resheet (Genesis) 21:5 states that Avraham was 100 years old when Yit zak (Isaac) was born. This leaves a dierence o 30 years between the time that Avraham received the Promise to the time that Yit zak (Isaac) was born in that Promised land ( = 30). Avraham was 100 years old when Yit zak was born, causing Avraham to be 70 years old when given the Promise o the land o Canaan ( = 70). See also Time Line 1, Note 5. Your next question may be, Why only 210 years in Egypt? I thought Israel was in Egypt or 400 years? Various translations certainly give this impression, and Time Line 2 herein provides a detailed overview o why they were in Egypt or only about 210 years; but to provide an abbreviated answer here, B resheet (Genesis) 15:13-16 states that Avraham s descendants would become enslaved and that in the 4 th generation ater entering that country (Egypt) they would return to the Promised land. The 1st generation o the 4 to be Egypt was Levi; B'resheet (Genesis) 46:8,11. The 2nd was Kohath, the 3rd Amram, and the 4th Moshe (Moses) who led Israel (the descendants o Avraham) out o Egypt according to B'resheet (Genesis) 15:16. From the traditional 400 year view this means that rom Kohath (the youngest), to Amram, to Moses, a 400 year span had to take place. But even i Kohath entered Egypt at age 1, and then begat Amram in the year that he died at age 133, who then begot Moses in the year that he died at age 137, and then added the 80 years o Moses to that total to bring it to the time that Moshe (Moses) led Israel out o Egypt, you would still have covered only 349 years. To explain it another way, in order or the traditional 400 year view to work, men who lived to their 130's would need to beget sons ater they died. An impossibility o course. This likewise, would be at a time when Avraham, who lived to be 175 years, was considered too old to have sons at even age 100 so how more unlikely other men ater 130 years o age who died at a much younger age than Avraham. Traditional 400 Year View Age When Entering Egypt Age When Begetting Next or at Time o Exodus Age at Time o Death Kohath Amram Moses/Exodus Total: 349 (350 1 = 349) However, with the 210 year position relected in the chronological record o Scripture, to reach the 210 year span rom Kohath to the exodus, Kohath and Amram only need be an average age o 66 when begetting the next generation a reasonable age at a time when men were living to be an average o Year Chronology Age When Entering Egypt Age When Begetting Next or at Time o Exodus Age at Time o Death Kohath 2 ~ Amram -- ~ Moses/Exodus Total: 210 (212 2 = 210) 4

5 So though it is true that they were oreigners in countries not their own or 400 years (beginning with Isaac who was born in a oreign land 30 years ater the promise o Canaan given to Avraham), Avraham s descendants were not oppressed, alicted, or enslaved that whole time; but only oten oppressed and alicted in those countries, and then eventually and ultimately enslaved later. In all however, their actual time spent in Egypt was only about 210 years; and the time spent enslaved only about 80 years. Time Line 2 herein lays out the chronology o events rom the time Avraham was given the Promise to the time they let Egypt 430 years later (and in parallel, rom the time Avraham s irst descendant through Sarah (i.e. Isaac) came into Canaan to the time they let Egypt 400 years later). The backbone o this time line is ounded upon the known ages o Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. This backbone o chronological events is identiied in the [gold] rows.
