This April, Hillel honored Psychology Professor Shelly Schreier with the 23rd Annul Golden Apple Awrd for Outstnding University Teching on our cmpus. Her tlk, entitled Mke Good Choices, struck me s the kind of lecture every Jewish mother drems her child would her on university cmpus. This tlk ws emblemtic of so mny things for me s Hillel direcr: I love tht one of our groups honors outstnding university teching, trdition we ve held in our orgniztion for 23 yers. I love tht the lecture Howrd Behr in the Ross School of Business Ledership Series, nd MUSIC Mtters Ben Folds concert ll exhibited how our orgniztion continues seek out opportunities enrich the lives of our on cmpus. By prtnering with orgniztions whose vlues lign with ours, we re sending messge tht we vlue their expressions of identity nd ledership on cmpus. We know tht for ny student, their time on cmpus is time of identity explortion, in which we wnt ply role. For mny, tht my hppen inside of our trditionl Hillel structure. And yet we know for mny others tht my hppen fr outside of Hillel. The onus is on us constntly evolve, seek new opportunities for growth nd outrech, look the lndscpe ws held in Rckhm Audirium, seting the 700+ student, We know tht for ny of groups nd progrms on cmpus tht lign with our fculty nd community udience. Mny were Jewish. Mny student, their time on vlues find venues of prtnership shre wht is Jewish were not. Mny hd been Hillel event before. Everyone on the Alterntive Spring Brek with the Jewish Ntionl Fund hd lredy been Isrel t lest once before on n orgnized trip. Why hd we chosen trvel Isrel gin, for such short period of time? We hd mny discussions on tht question. Mny of us hd the sme motivtion: give bck Isrel. Ayelet Shpiro, sophomore t Estern Michign University, felt tht s Americn college we sometimes lose sight of wht we vlue most. It is so importnt tht we give bck lnd nd people who give us so much pride. My high school hs the trdition tht every freshmn clss recite the Ephebic Oth, promising leve the community no less, but rther greter, thn we found it. I cnnot think of more ccurte representtion of our experience. We iled in the community grden in Bt Glim, volunteered in the rent-controlled prtment buildings in Akko, nd worked t the Crmel Forest. We sw vulnerble prt of Isrel, nd were nxious do wht ws necessry mke those res whole gin. We sw Isrel in new light. Despite our different bckgrounds we were in greement tht this one week forged for us greter connection the lnd of Isrel. We becme not urists, but volunteers. After pretty hevy first dy, we felt like we hd spent months gether. An EF5 rndo hd ripped prt the wn in 2011, nd we were working longside the Jewish Disster Relief Corps nd the Islmic Circle of North Americ Relief help the Rebuild Joplin effort. A locl church ws our home. We mde our own mels nd invited people from the community. We dined with the locl Muslim nd Jewish communities. Everyone ws welcoming nd shred their inspiring, nd sometimes trgic, sries. We joined the locl communities for Jum nd Shbbt services. The trip ws n mzing opportunity for us get know ech other s fiths. We lerned from the spiritul nd emotionl journey we shred in Joplin, feeling deep connection our work nd our new friends. Afternoons, we hd fun with t Erhrt Middle School. Besides the scvenger hunt, we lso pcked food boxes t Focus: Hope; showed off our ice skting skills; nd chilled t Wyne Stte s Plnetrium. We herd Detroiters spek bout their socil justice work. We worked with innovtive nonprofits t Detroit SOUP, visited strtup compnies in the M@dison Building, nd on Shbbt we joined the service t Isc Agree Downwn Syngogue. We sw Detroit in n optimistic nd self-determined light. Detroiters showed unbounded love for their city nd dediction seeing it succeed. Detroit s chllenges nd opportunities ren t someone else s, but our own. We re now thirteen who crry this messge round with us, hoping shre it with the world. 4 When Students Own Their Ledership Trining By dvey rosen Our Hillel s ledership is unique in tht our recognize the importnce of investing in their peers nd their responsibility in offering ledership dvncement others. Dvid Rosenwein ( 13), pst chir of our Hillel s Governing Bord, rn on pltform increse ledership trining opportunities for on cmpus. In 2012, Dvid incresed peer-led ledership trining sessions, supported by the Jck nd Bobbie Bermn Ledership Fund, from two four development sessions ech yer. Our 2013 chir, Dli Adler ( 14), nd the current Governing nd Progrmming Bords continued this commitment invest in their peers. The first ledership development session of the cdemic yer ok plce in September nd fetured Howrd Behr, pst president of Strbucks. Behr discussed his pproch ledership, the importnce of mission sttement guide n orgniztion, nd trusting the people you work with be cretive nd successful. The second development session ws held t the end of Ocber. The progrmming bord worked with the U-M Center for Cmpus Involvement pln session on lerning ledership styles. Students gined deeper understnding of their current skills nd strengths s leders s well s leders hd the opportunity engge in converstion round the pic of identity res for further growth. The winter semester included the third development session t the beginning of Februry in which Hillel leders prticipted in tem building ctivities run by U-M RecSports. The finl ledership development session of the cdemic yer ws held t the end of Mrch. For the Mrch session Hillel leders worked with the U-M Spectrum Center design n LGBTQ lly trining progrm specificlly for Michign Hillel student leders. At this trining, leders hd the opportunity engge in converstion round the pic of identity nd considered how Hillel cn be more welcoming nd inclusive orgniztion. In plnning these sessions, the Governing nd Progrmming Bords seized the opportunity prtner with knowledgeble professionls on cmpus nd in the Ann Arbor community. The implementtion of these sessions llowed Michign Hillel enhnce existing prtnerships, crete new reltionships with university orgniztions, nd introduce student leders brod rnge of resources t Michign. Ledership development nd enggement trining sessions plnned by Hillel student leders for Hillel student leders demonstrtes tremendous commitment furthering Michign Hillel s strtegic gol nurture empowered ledership. This November, 27 trveled the 2012 GA in Bltimore, MD meet with over 3,000 Jewish leders. Ech student ws pired with menr, who ws professionl or volunteer in field of interest the student. Of his menr, he shred, She (Amy Skopp Cooper, Rmh Cmps) ws the embodiment of wht I ws interested in Jewish informl eduction in the context of cmps. Ariell Yedwb ( 13) found the GA be very exciting nd busy, nd prticipted in mny Isrel converstions. She met Lind Hurwitz, GA Co-Chir, nd described their time gether s mzing! The joined representtives from the Detroit Jewish Federtion Scott Kufmn, Mirym Rosenzweig nd Ted Cohen discuss opportunities for Jewish life in Detroit, through socil justice, urbn frming, rts, nd tech innovtion. A highlight ws meeting with Bill Bermn, mjor figure in the Detroit nd Americn Jewish community nd long-stnding supporter of Michign Hillel. Mr. Bermn shred how being Jewish hs enhnced his life nd how he hs mde decisions. Students were inspired shre with him how they envision Judism being centrl in their lives beyond college. Connecting with these leding members of the Jewish community creted excitement nd growth for U-M Hillel s t the GA. Behr, uthor of It s Not About the Coffee, emphsized serving others s the core of ny business, even in field where profit mrgins often reign supreme. Behr sid he built culture rooted in vlues, rther thn dollrs. If it s not bout the coffee, wht is it bout? It s bout the people, Behr sid. It doesn t mke ny difference wht you choose do. When Behr expressed interest in speking with the Business School, Siegel decided integrte the two groups. Behr enjoyed tiloring his speech college. It s wonderful experience for me the fountin of youth exists on college cmpuses, Behr sid. I wnt college business t lest think little bit differently. 6 Hillel s Direcr of First Impressions: Chris Stuffer By Nikki Koll A n importnt member of the Hillel stff is Chris Stuffer, Direcr of First Impressions. Chris ws rised in Bloomfield Hills, MI nd cme Ann Arbor study t University of Michign. She currently lives in Dexter with her husbnd, Ricke, on ten cres of wonderfulness. Where did her title come from? When I d been working here few yers, Michel Brooks (then Executive Direcr of Hillel) ld me tht cllers were sying they liked getting friendly greeting when they clled Hillel. One dy Michel clled Chris his office, nd gve her gift: desk plque inscribed Direcr of First Impressions. Tht hs been her title ever since. Chris believes one of the best prts bout working t Hillel is intercting with the. I love the energy of the who hng out t Hillel. Those re intelligent, cretive nd motivted mke things hppen. I love being immersed in the concerns nd thoughts of the young which I then cn describe my old people friends, sid Chris. Perhps Chris pprecition for t U-M stems from her love for her own four children nd grndchildren. All three of my wesome sons re mrried mzing young women, nd you my see my lovely dredlocked dughter Abbie t Hillel. Phos of my three grndchildren flot cross my computer screen. I m crzy bout my fmily. She lso feels specil connection U-M s she, her husbnd nd two of her children re lumni. In getting know the Hillel stff better, Chris shred some insight in wht goes on behind the scenes. On n verge dy, you might find Tilly crrying some prty sndwiches round the office, which she brings from Cnd. Chris suggests you Google them, becuse they re probbly not something you ve ever seen (hint: crustless white bred sndwiches cut very smll I love the energy of the with pink nd yellow filling). Also, different who hng out t members of the stff seem hve their own syings when things get bit hectic. Hillel. Those re Rbbi Seth Winberg, our ssistnt direcr, nd Mtt Green, one of our Bermn motivted mke things intelligent, cretive nd Fellows, exclim, Oy, vey, but Dvey, hppen. our other ssistnt direcr, sys quietly, Nmste. Dine, our direcr of opertions, nd Chef Emil re softies nd they often bring trets for the office. When the stff is looking for somewhere go out lunch, Sllie, our development direcr, is the one sk. She knows the best resturnts in wn, nd not only does the wit stff know her by nme, they lso know which is her tble. Chris finds tht one of the mjor perks of working in the Hillel office is tht there is lwys something new nd exciting going on. Even though Hillel works with similr set of events from yer yer, ech yer is completely different from the one before it. The stff is so cretive nd hve such gret effect on us tht nothing stys the sme, Chris explined. But best of ll, Chris recognizes tht the Hillel stff s hrd work never goes unnoticed. The, their prents, nd the University community ll pprecite wht Hillel does, she sid. Meet Hillel s first Isrel Fellow, Iln Ofir By Hillry Bergmn T his fll, University of Michign Hillel welcomed its first Isrel Fellow, Iln Ofir, its stff. A recent politicl science nd economics grdute from Ben-Gurion University nd n Isreli Defense Force tnk commnder, Iln is n excellent resource for ll things Isrel. Iln dvises the Hillel student groups tht re involved with Isrel dvoccy on cmpus, such s Americn Movement for Isrel (AMI), J Street UMich, Isrel Cohort, nd I-LEAD. He lso helps find internships in Isrel, esily connecting them with people becuse of his strong ties Isrel. Iln commented on the tight community of Michign, nd how it is so unlike college in Isrel. Students live gether here, (some) in Greek houses. Such thing does not exist in Isrel. Students study differently here; they hve lot of pressure from clsses, but they still hve time ttend footbll gmes nd extr-curriculr ctivities. Students here re so involved. But t the University of Michign, Hillel Outdoor Adventure is shttering these presumptions. And Jewish re liking it. Lte in the fll of lst yer, my sister, Teddie Olender ( 12) nd I strted new Hillel-sponsored nd University-recognized student group help Jewish experience the gret outdoors gether. Teddie, then senior, nd I, freshmn, shred pssion for both Hillel nd the outdoors, nd svored the opportunity combine these pssions nd shre them with our fellow Jewish Wolverines. The group hs rpidly grown in membership nd recognition since its inception. Events so fr, including cmpouts, hiking trek, ski nd snowbord trip, cookout, bonfire, nd cnoe trip spnning Southest Michign, hve been exceptionl, with mny prticipnts returning for more. Burying Books: A New Experience for the New Yer By Jessic Curhn nd Dniel Chudnow The full rticle originlly ppered in the Detroit Jewish News on April 13, O ver dozen University of Michign nd Hillel s Rbbi Seth gthered t lrge open pit on the fr edge of snowy cemetery in Mount Clemens on our lst dy of winter brek. We unpcked truck full of hundreds, mybe thousnds, of worn out religious books nd then buried them. This wsn t the usul somber cemetery environment. Insted, we were enjoying ourselves little, nd t first tht mde us uncomfortble. Remember, we re, nd discrding books is fntsy of ours! We were different ges, from different res, nd brought up in different denomintions of Judism, but we were ll rised with this sme ide: Books should be treted with respect especilly books with God s nme in them. We tret books with n equivlent level of respect s we do decesed humn beings. And yet the ctul buril set us on edge. Seeing lrge pit in snowy field filled with hundreds of disheveled books reminded us of mss grves of people, which confused our sense of doing something respectful nd dignified. We were lso rised expect liturgy for lmost every spect of life, so the lck of liturgy ws resounding. When we strted, we just strted, nd when we were done, we just left. No blessing, no kddish. The rbbi from Fiddler on the Roof would hve been ghst. However, we relized the elements tht we were ll rised with troubled us were exctly wht they should hve this sme ide: Books been. After the soul deprts the body, the body hs lost its purpose nd so it is buried. Once should be treted with book cn no longer be studied only buril respect especilly shows proper respect. The discomfort cn books with God s nme remind us keep books useble for s long in them. The cmpus s lrgest pro-isrel group, AMI decided host this event promote pece nd cretive expression bsed on experiences in Isrel. They prtnered with Artists4Isrel, n orgniztion tht supports Isrel through the unique lens of rtistic expression. Since Isrel cn be subject of conflict begin with, the difficulty is getting interested in Isrel without scring them wy, sys AMI member Alyss Adler ( 14). This chllenge is one tht the entire pro-isrel community fces nd is one tht AMI struggled with s they st down decide on progrmming for the yer. But how cn Hillel do more connect our prents with wht is hppening on cmpus nd t Hillel? We recently creted the Prent Advisory Council (PAC) s one wy receive input from prents of current Michign. PAC consists of selected prent representtives who serve s dvisors the stff nd Bord of Trustees of Hillel. In turn, PAC keeps other prents informed bout ctivities, policies nd plns for the future. Prents on PAC re n importnt resource for Hillel s they provide feedbck on current progrms, suggestions for how we cn better ssist, nd finncil support sustin our Hillel. MONDAY The week strts out in downwrd dog with yog clss. Hillel hs enlisted the tlents of n excellent locl instrucr, Rchel Portnoy, nd for mere five dollrs per hour nd hlf clss, cn stretch, strengthen nd relx twice week. I-LEAD (Isrel Ledership, Eduction, Advoccy nd Dilogue), new student-led group, lso meets on Mondys. The I-LEAD meetings provide n environment where thought-provoking converstion nd eduction cn tke plce. As the group lerned how mke these items, they lso discussed with Blir wht sustinbility mens her nd how her pickling creer hs connected her Jewish nd environmentl vlues. No student went home empty hnded or hungry. Also on Tuesdy, the Hillel group, Breking Brriers, kicked off three-prt dilogue series tht consisted of two interfith discussions nd the viewing of the ply Book of Mormon t the Fisher Theter in Detroit. The first discussion ok plce prior going the show t the Church of Jesus Christ of the Ltter-Dy Sints. A member of the church gve n introduction bout the Mormon religion nd engged in dilogue bout their own identities. Following the viewing of the show, there ws second dilogue held t Hillel, which minly focused on humor in the Jewish community nd how it hs been used overcome differences nd chllenges in ssimilting in Americ. The continued their group converstions tlking bout their perceptions of the ply. Breking Brriers works bring gether of vrying religions, nd the leders felt tht bringing gether Mormon, Jewish, nd of other religions debunk stereotypes nd misconceptions ligned relly nicely with the group s gols. Emily Steinberg ( 15), one of the Breking Brriers co-chirs, commented, It ws relly gret her the converstions between, Hillel stff, nd members of the Mormon community continue s they were wlking out of the closing dilogue. It felt like we d helped build connection mong them, helped them feel comfortble discussing difficult pics while lerning more both bout themselves nd bout ech other. WEDNESDAY On Wednesdy, there ws screening of the film DevOUT sponsored by Ahv, the Hillel Lesbin, Gy, Bisexul nd Trnsgender (LGBT) group. The group ws intrigued by the sries in the film of Orthodox Jews who re gy but still wnt live Torh-committed life despite the tensions tht exist in the Orthodox world surrounding homosexulity. At the end of the movie, Chni Getter, who ws fetured in the film, cme the stge tke questions. Chni grew up in n Orthodox community in Monsey, NY, nd is deeply religious. A gret yer for First Yer Students of Hillel (FYSH) By Rebecc Rosen Coming the University of Michign s freshmn cn be dunting experience. Luckily, Hillel s freshmen-outrech group, the First Yer Students of Hillel (FYSH), is there mke the cmpus more intimte nd more mngeble for new Jewish. FYSH which t the beginning of the yer ws committee of ten sophomores hosted bonfire t Hillel the very first week were on cmpus tht drew hundreds of new. During Sukkot, FYSH hosted specil dinner for freshmen in Hillel s Sukkh. This event drew mny more thn ws nticipted. This presented dilemm: how would we feed so mny more? But with reinforcements brought in by Hillel s kitchen stff, everyone ws hppily fed by the end of the evening. FYSH encourges freshmen tke on ledership roles. Erly in the school yer, bout fifteen freshmen joined FYSH help pln events for other Jewish freshmen. The old com- mittee served s menrs their first-yer counterprts, nd helped them pln their first events s Hillel leders. These freshmen leders plnned two events tht ech drew lrge numbers of first-yer in Hillel s building. And then there ws Jewish youth group. So nturlly, I cme Michign yerning for Jewish community, one I expected prllel just the types of experiences nd reltionships I hd developed in these relms. Yet wht I found t Hillel ws Jewish community of different nture, nd of surprising nture for freshmn so comfortble with my own bubble of wht I knew Judism be. At first I felt hesitnt. There were Jewish from the west cost, the est cost, the Midwest, from rnge of sects, vrying eductionl bckgrounds, politicl nd religious beliefs, you nme it. But Hillel ws community where the kinds of reltionships formed with ech other were so visible, I knew I wnted shre in it. I joined one of our student groups, Chllh for Hunger, nd grew in ledership positions tht llowed me get feeling for wht Hillel ws ll bout. I lerned how problem-solve, be cretive, nd engge with other. I considered running for Governing Bord. Remembering how I felt little lost freshmn yer, I hd no doubt tht there were other who felt the sme wy. I mde it my mission ensure welcoming environment nd community for diverse set of, nd I ws elected Hillel s Governing Bord with the gol of doing just tht.
