GOSEL The service of Christ: footwshing nd mel John 13:1 17, 31b 35 The story of the lst supper in John s gospel reclls remrkble event not mentioned elsewhere: Jesus performs the duty of slve, wshing the feet of his disciples nd urging them to do the sme for one nother. On this night we hve herd our Lord s commndment to love one nother s he hs loved us. We who receive God s love in Jesus Christ re clled to love one nother, to be servnts to ech other s Jesus becme our servnt. Our commitment to this loving service is signified in the wshing of feet (or hnds), following the exmple our Lord gve us on the night before he died. The gospel ccording to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Now before the festivl of the ssover, Jesus knew tht his hour hd come to deprt from this world nd go to the Fther. Hving loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The devil hd lredy put it into the hert of Juds son of Simon Iscriot to betry him. And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing tht the Fther hd given ll things into his hnds, nd tht he hd come from God nd ws going to God, 4 got up from the tble, took off his outer robe, nd tied towel round himself. 5 Then he poured wter into bsin nd begn to wsh the disciples feet nd to wipe them with the towel tht ws tied round him. 6 He cme to Simon eter, who sid to him, Lord, re you going to wsh my feet? 7 Jesus nswered, You do not know now wht I m doing, but lter you will understnd. 8 eter sid to him, You will never wsh my feet. Jesus nswered, Unless I wsh you, you hve no shre with me. 9 Simon eter sid to him, Lord, not my feet only but lso my hnds nd my hed! 10 Jesus sid to him, One who hs bthed does not need to wsh, except for the feet, but is entirely clen. And you re clen, though not ll of you. 11 For he knew who ws to betry him; for this reson he sid, Not ll of you re clen. 12 After he hd wshed their feet, hd put on his robe, nd hd returned to the tble, he sid to them, Do you know wht I hve done to you? 13 You cll me Techer nd Lord nd you re right, for tht is wht I m. 14 So if I, your Lord nd Techer, hve wshed your feet, you lso ought to wsh one nother s feet. 15 For I hve set you n exmple, tht you lso should do s I hve done to you. 16 Very truly, I tell you, servnts re not greter thn their mster, nor re messengers greter thn the one who sent them. 17 If you know these things, you re blessed if you do them. 31b Now the Son of Mn hs been glorified, nd God hs been glorified in him. 32 If God hs been glorified in him, God will lso glorify him in himself nd will glorify him t once. 33 Little children, I m with you only little longer. You will look for me; nd s I sid to the Jews so now I sy to you, Where I m going, you cnnot come. 34 I give you new commndment, tht you love one nother. 11 The fourth servnt poem promises ultimte vindiction for the servnt, who mde his life n offering for sin. The erly church sw in the servnt s pouring himself out to deth nd being numbered with the trnsgressors importnt keys for understnding the deth of Jesus. GOOD FRIDAY WORD READING The suffering servnt Isih 52:13 53:12 See, my servnt shll prosper; he shll be exlted nd lifted up, nd shll be very high. 14 Just s there were mny who were stonished t him so mrred ws his ppernce, beyond humn semblnce, nd his form beyond tht of mortls 15 so he shll strtle mny ntions; kings shll shut their mouths becuse of him; for tht which hd not been told them they shll see, nd tht which they hd not herd they shll contemplte Who hs believed wht we hve herd? And to whom hs the rm of the LORD been reveled? 2 For he grew up before him like young plnt, nd like root out of dry ground; he hd no form or mjesty tht we should look t him, nothing in his ppernce tht we should desire him. 3 He ws despised nd rejected by others; mn of suffering nd cquinted with infirmity; nd s one from whom others hide their fces he ws despised, nd we held him of no ccount. 4 Surely he hs borne our infirmities nd crried our diseses; yet we ccounted him stricken, struck down by God, nd fflicted. 5 But he ws wounded for our trnsgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him ws the punishment tht mde us whole, nd by his bruises we re heled. 6 All we like sheep hve gone stry; we hve ll turned to our own wy, nd the LORD hs lid on him the iniquity of us ll. 7 He ws oppressed, nd he ws fflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like lmb tht is led to the slughter, nd like sheep tht before its sherers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By perversion of justice he ws tken wy. Who could hve imgined his future? For he ws cut off from the lnd of the living, stricken for the trnsgression of my people. 9 They mde his grve with the wicked nd his tomb with the rich, lthough he hd done no violence, nd there ws no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it ws the will of the LORD to crush him with pin. When you mke his life n offering for sin, he shll see his offspring, nd shll prolong his dys; through him the will of the LORD shll prosper. 11 Out of his nguish he shll see light; he shll find stisfction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servnt, shll mke mny righteous, nd he shll ber their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will llot him portion with the gret, nd he shll divide the spoil with the strong; becuse he poured out himself to deth, nd ws numbered with the trnsgressors; yet he bore the sin of mny, nd mde intercession for the trnsgressors. Good Fridy The word of the Lord. Thnks be to God. 11

HYMN (hymn) 351 O Scred Hed, Now Wounded stnzs 2 & 3 in hrmony MEDITATION The ssembly my remin seted. GOSEL The pssion nd deth of Jesus John 18:1 19:42 On Good Fridy the story of Jesus pssion from his rrest to his buril is red in its entirety from the Gospel of John. The pssion of our Lord Jesus Christ ccording to John. Glory to you, O Lord. [Jesus] went out with his disciples cross the Kidron vlley to plce where there ws grden, which he nd his disciples entered. 2 Now Juds, who betryed him, lso knew the plce, becuse Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Juds brought detchment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests nd the hrisees, nd they cme there with lnterns nd torches nd wepons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing ll tht ws to hppen to him, cme forwrd nd sked them, Whom re you looking for? 5 Jesus of Nzreth. I m he. Juds, who betryed him, ws stnding with them. 6 When Jesus sid to them, I m he, they stepped bck nd fell to the ground. 7 Agin he sked them, Whom re you looking for? Jesus of Nzreth. 8 I told you tht I m he. So if you re looking for me, let these men go. 9 This ws to fulfill the word tht he hd spoken, I did not lose single one of those whom you gve me. 10 Then Simon eter, who hd sword, drew it, struck the high priest s slve, nd cut off his right er. The slve s nme ws Mlchus. 11 Jesus sid to eter, ut your sword bck into its sheth. Am I not to drink the cup tht the Fther hs given me? 12 So the soldiers, their officer, nd the Jewish police rrested Jesus nd bound him. 13 First they took him to Anns, who ws the fther-in-lw of Ciphs, the high priest tht yer. 14 Ciphs ws the one who hd dvised the Jews tht it ws better to hve one person die for the people. 15 Simon eter nd nother disciple followed Jesus. Since tht disciple ws known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyrd of the high priest, 16 but eter ws stnding outside t the gte. So the other disciple, who ws known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the womn who gurded the gte, nd brought eter in. 17 The womn sid to eter, You re not lso one of this mn s disciples, re you? I m not. 18 Now the slves nd the police hd mde chrcol fire becuse it ws cold, nd they were stnding round it nd wrming themselves. eter lso ws stnding with them nd wrming himself. 19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus bout his disciples nd bout his teching. 20 Jesus nswered, I hve spoken openly to the world; I hve lwys tught in syngogues nd in the temple, 12

where ll the Jews come together. I hve sid nothing in secret. 21 Why do you sk me? Ask those who herd wht I sid to them; they know wht I sid. 22 When he hd sid this, one of the police stnding nerby struck Jesus on the fce, sying, Is tht how you nswer the high priest? 23 If I hve spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I hve spoken rightly, why do you strike me? 24 Then Anns sent him bound to Ciphs the high priest. Good Fridy 25 Now Simon eter ws stnding nd wrming himself. They sked him, You re not lso one of his disciples, re you? He denied it nd sid, I m not. 26 One of the slves of the high priest, reltive of the mn whose er eter hd cut off, sked, Did I not see you in the grden with him? 27 Agin eter denied it, nd t tht moment the cock crowed. HYMN (hymn) 349 Ah, Holy Jesus stnz 1 (hrmony) 28 Then they took Jesus from Ciphs to ilte s hedqurters. It ws erly in the morning. They themselves did not enter the hedqurters, so s to void ritul defilement nd to be ble to et the ssover. 29 So ilte went out to them nd sid, Wht ccustion do you bring ginst this mn? 30 If this mn were not criminl, we would not hve hnded him over to you. 31 Tke him yourselves nd judge him ccording to your lw. We re not permitted to put nyone to deth. 32 (This ws to fulfill wht Jesus hd sid when he indicted the kind of deth he ws to die.) 33 Then ilte entered the hedqurters gin, summoned Jesus, nd sked him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34 Do you sk this on your own, or did others tell you bout me? 35 I m not Jew, m I? Your own ntion nd the chief priests hve hnded you over to me. Wht hve you done? 36 My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being hnded over to the Jews. But s it is, my kingdom is not from here. 37 So you re king? You sy tht I m king. For this I ws born, nd for this I cme into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. 38 Wht is truth? After he hd sid this, he went out to the Jews gin nd told them, I find no cse ginst him. 39 But you hve custom tht I relese someone for you t the ssover. Do you wnt me to relese for you the King of the Jews? 40 They shouted in reply, Not this mn, but Brbbs! Now Brbbs ws bndit. HYMN (hymn) 349 Ah, Holy Jesus stnz 2 13

19:1 Then ilte took Jesus nd hd him flogged. 2 And the soldiers wove crown of thorns nd put it on his hed, nd they dressed him in purple robe. 3 They kept coming up to him, sying, Hil, King of the Jews! nd striking him on the fce. 4 ilte went out gin nd sid to them, Look, I m bringing him out to you to let you know tht I find no cse ginst him. 5 So Jesus cme out, wering the crown of thorns nd the purple robe. Here is the mn! 6 When the chief priests nd the police sw him, they shouted, Crucify him! Crucify him! ilte sid to them, Tke him yourselves nd crucify him; I find no cse ginst him. 7 The Jews nswered him, We hve lw, nd ccording to tht lw he ought to die becuse he hs climed to be the Son of God. 8 Now when ilte herd this, he ws more frid thn ever. 9 He entered his hedqurters gin nd sked Jesus, Where re you from? But Jesus gve him no nswer. 10 ilte therefore sid to him, Do you refuse to spek to me? Do you not know tht I hve power to relese you, nd power to crucify you? 11 You would hve no power over me unless it hd been given you from bove; therefore the one who hnded me over to you is guilty of greter sin. 12 From then on ilte tried to relese him, but the Jews cried out, If you relese this mn, you re no friend of the emperor. Everyone who clims to be king sets himself ginst the emperor. 13 When ilte herd these words, he brought Jesus outside nd st on the judge s bench t plce clled The Stone vement, or in Hebrew Gbbth. 14 Now it ws the dy of reprtion for the ssover; nd it ws bout noon. He sid to the Jews, Here is your King! 15 Awy with him! Awy with him! Crucify him! Shll I crucify your King? We hve no king but the emperor. 16 Then he hnded him over to them to be crucified. HYMN (hymn) 349 Ah, Holy Jesus stnz 3 (hrmony) So they took Jesus; 17 nd crrying the cross by himself, he went out to wht is clled The lce of the Skull, which in Hebrew is clled Golgoth. 18 There they crucified him, nd with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them. 19 ilte lso hd n inscription written nd put on the cross. It red, Jesus of Nzreth, the King of the Jews. 20 Mny of the Jews red this inscription, becuse the plce where Jesus ws crucified ws ner the city; nd it ws written in Hebrew, in Ltin, nd in Greek. 21 Then the chief priests of the Jews sid to ilte, Do not write, The King of the Jews, but, This mn sid, I m King of the Jews. 22 Wht I hve written I hve written. 23 When the soldiers hd crucified Jesus, they took his clothes nd divided them into four prts, one for ech soldier. They lso took his tunic; now the tunic ws semless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they sid to one nother, Let us not ter it, but cst lots for it to see who will get it. This ws to fulfill wht the scripture sys, They divided my clothes mong themselves, nd for my clothing they cst lots. 25 And tht is wht the soldiers did. 14

Menwhile, stnding ner the cross of Jesus were his mother, nd his mother s sister, Mry the wife of Clops, nd Mry Mgdlene. 26 When Jesus sw his mother nd the disciple whom he loved stnding beside her, he sid to his mother, Womn, here is your son. 27 Then he sid to the disciple, Here is your mother. And from tht hour the disciple took her into his own home. 28 After this, when Jesus knew tht ll ws now finished, he sid (in order to fulfill the scripture), I m thirsty. 29 A jr full of sour wine ws stnding there. So they put sponge full of the wine on brnch of hyssop nd held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus hd received the wine, he sid, It is finished. Then he bowed his hed nd gve up his spirit. Good Fridy HYMN (hymn) 349 Ah, Holy Jesus stnzs 4 & 5 31 Since it ws the dy of reprtion, the Jews did not wnt the bodies left on the cross during the sbbth, especilly becuse tht sbbth ws dy of gret solemnity. So they sked ilte to hve the legs of the crucified men broken nd the bodies removed. 32 Then the soldiers cme nd broke the legs of the first nd of the other who hd been crucified with him. 33 But when they cme to Jesus nd sw tht he ws lredy ded, they did not brek his legs. 34 Insted, one of the soldiers pierced his side with sper, nd t once blood nd wter cme out. 35 (He who sw this hs testified so tht you lso my believe. His testimony is true, nd he knows tht he tells the truth.) 36 These things occurred so tht the scripture might be fulfilled, None of his bones shll be broken. 37 And gin nother pssge of scripture sys, They will look on the one whom they hve pierced. 38 After these things, Joseph of Arimthe, who ws disciple of Jesus, though secret one becuse of his fer of the Jews, sked ilte to let him tke wy the body of Jesus. ilte gve him permission; so he cme nd removed his body. 39 Nicodemus, who hd t first come to Jesus by night, lso cme, bringing mixture of myrrh nd loes, weighing bout hundred pounds. 40 They took the body of Jesus nd wrpped it with the spices in linen cloths, ccording to the buril custom of the Jews. 41 Now there ws grden in the plce where he ws crucified, nd in the grden there ws new tomb in which no one hd ever been lid. 42 And so, becuse it ws the Jewish dy of reprtion, nd the tomb ws nerby, they lid Jesus there. The gospel of the Lord. rise to you, O Christ. MUSICAL RESONSE Lrgo from Violin Sont No. 3 in C mjor, BWV 1005 J. S.
