1 Middletown, Connecticut Sep/Oct 2018/ Elul-Tishrei-Cheshvan BUILDING THE NEW by Jonathan Shapiro I have always found the High Holiday season as a time to reflect back on the past year and look forward to what the future may hold. However, with the departure of Rabbi Haaz after nine years with us, I found myself reflecting back a little further than usual. The past nine years have been some of the best times of my life and some of the toughest times of my life. It was filled with many monumental changes perhaps the greatest changes I have ever experienced. Nine years ago, Sarah and I had just welcomed Lily to the world becoming parents for the first time. Eight years ago, we moved to Middletown and I called Congregation Adath Israel home again (though I never really left). Seven years ago, we welcomed Ari to the world. Five years ago, my father passed away. Three years ago, I joined the board. And this year, it is my honor to begin to serve this Congregation as President. There have been many other memories in between both happy and sad. As we embark on the new year, I also find myself wondering what the next nine years will bring. With Rabbi Haaz departure, changes are on the horizon for our Congregation. Change can bring many emotions uncertainty, fear, nervousness, excitement, and I know the lack of a full-time rabbi can bring some uneasiness. However, while we all enjoyed the presence and contributions of Rabbi Haaz, Bonnie Rose, Sophie and Sadie, I am excited for our Congregation, our future and the opportunity before us. Our Congregation has never been about any one person. It has never been about our rabbi. Rabbis, teachers and principals have come and gone through the years, but our people remain. The strength and conviction of our congregants of all of you. That is our one constant. It has been and always will be about our people and the community that continues to shine. It is what brought me back here nine years ago. And now, we have an opportunity to keep our Congregation moving forward, and shape our future together. Change is an opportunity for growth. We need to embrace this opportunity to ensure the vibrancy of our Congregation for the future. The world continues to change, and we need to change with it. As the great philosopher Socrates said, The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. As we enter this year of change, our future is now. We have a great foundation to build upon. We have the opportunity and the ability to build our future together. We must work together to do so and grow our community. We must make sure we are providing each other with the synagogue we want it to be. We must focus our energies on building our new. The Board and I are looking forward to a (President Continued on page 3)
