1 Middletown, Connecticut March 2018/Adar/Nisan 5778 A GREAT MITZVAH by Rabbi Haaz The year 2019 will mark 90 years since Adath Israel, the building, was erected at the corner of Church Street and Broad Street in Middletown, CT. While the building is something to celebrate, it was not the first milestone in the community. One year earlier, in 1928, our Adath Israel ancestors formally established the Chevre Kadisha, which translates to the Sacred Society. This group of synagogue members engages in arguably the most sacred mitzvah in our religious practice preparing those who have died for Jewish burial. For 90 years (and probably much more) we have blessed the families in our community by caring for our own members between the time of death and burial. Many synagogues rely on the hired staff provided by a Jewish funeral home. Jewish communities are fortunate to have Jewish funeral homes to provide all of the rites of Jewish burial; however, I am so very proud of our synagogue community that has always been motivated by love and respect to care for our own members and families. To have people handle these rituals who know and care for us adds immeasurable beauty to the mitzvah of tahara, the (Rabbi Continued on page 3) WHAT IS A COMMUNITY? by Eileen Daling For many months now while Michael Lafontaine has been on medical leave, Adath Israel has had a somewhat difficult, trying time. Along with the Board, I have tried to make this time as easy as possible while also keeping our budget in mind. For awhile, we brought back the cleaning service to fulfill the needs of keeping our buildings clean and presentable. For some time now, we have the students at Adelbrook performing that job along with many other tasks. This gives us a chance to help the students learn about a synagogue and master many life skills they will need now and in the future. Along with Adelbrook, many have stepped up to fill some other voids. Whether that means moving tables and chairs, helping at Pray-Eat-Sing dinners, preparing food for Onegs and Kiddushes, or many other tasks I can t seem to remember, I want to thank all now. Those who stepped up truly understand what it means to be a community in times of needs and have stepped up gladly when needed. Others, I m sad to say don t completely understand what it means to be part of a true community and are less than happy about the situation we have found ourselves in. I understand (President Continued on page 5)

3 3 (Rabbi Continued from page 1) ritual washing and dressing as preparation for Jewish burial. While many of us might not feel comfortable taking on this most sacred of mitzvot, there is an opportunity for all of us to participate in the process of respectfully bringing our loved ones to their place of eternal rest. In addition to the ritual washing and dressing of the deceased, it is our responsibility as a community to never leave a person alone between the time of tahara and burial. We must always have one person accompany the deceased throughout this time. Typically this person sits in the same room as the closed casket and reads from The Book of Psalms. At Adath Israel, we tend to have people take thirty-minute or one-hour shifts until the funeral begins. This is arguably the greatest mitzvah in Judaism, and it requires no background knowledge or levels of commitment to other specific mitzvot. And, it is powerful. Speak with someone who has performed this mitzvah called sh mirah (pronounced sh mee-rah), which means guarding, and they will certainly share with you the impact of serving as a guard, a shomer (male form of the noun; pronounced show-mare ) or a shomeret (female form of the noun; pronounced show-mer-et ). Please know that we also need your help. There are many details for the Chevre Kadisha to take care of when we learn that someone in our community has died, and it is difficult to chase people down to serve as guards, as shomrim (plural form of the noun; pronounced, shome-reem ). Lew Goldberg, who is in charge of the Adath Israel Cemetery is compiling a list of those who would like to volunteer to help with sh mirah. If you would like to be part of this sacred group, or if you are interested but have questions, please Lew at agodoc@comcast.net. Thank you for your participation and support and for helping Adath Israel to celebrate 90 years of caring for families in our community at their most vulnerable times. *Please mark your calendars for an interfaith dinner and dialogue at Wesleyan on Thursday, March 8 from 6:00-7:30pm. Ther e is no cost for this kosher meal, but we must collect RSVPs in the Main Office. Those who attend the dinner are most welcome to head over together to enjoy the final film, The Women s Balcony, in The 11th Annual Ring Family Wesleyan University Israeli Film Festival. CHEVRA KADISHA A TRADITION OF CARING AT ADATH ISRAEL by Lew Goldberg The land for the cemetery on Pine Street was transferred to the Middletown Jewish Burial Society (comprised of members of Adath Israel) from private ownership, in Therefore, our cemetery is 91 years old this year. When exactly, the Chevra Kadisha was formed is less clear. but Jews have been buried in Middletown since the 1880 s and long-time members recall that tahara (the ritual preparation of a body for burial) was, back in the day, done in the homes of the deceased by a group of congregants committed to carrying out this mitzvah. Members of Adath Israel should be very proud to be part of a community that cares for its own in life and in death and has since its inception. This legacy can only continue with your support. Please consider making a donation to the Chevra Kadisha in honor of this long tradition. Funds for the Chevra Kadisha which includes maintenance of the cemetery are completely separate from the finances of the congregation. Expenses for maintenance of the cemetery regularly exceed income generated by perpetual care fees and donations. Also, consider joining the Chevra Kadisha so that vital tradition will continue. Feel free to contact the office for information about the Chevra Kadisha and the committee will contact you to answer your questions. 5 5 (President Continued from page 1) that not everyone can, is available, or wish to help but that is what makes a community. Whether here in the synagogue or giving assistance to any member in need, that is what makes a community. While Mike Lafontaine is not truly an Adath Israel member, he is part of our Adath Israel Family. Now, I need to thank those who were more than willing to step up as part of this community. First, I want to apologize to anyone I have forgotten but thank you. It has been many months and sometimes memories fade. I want to thank both Aidan and Holly Bauer for taking care of the food for Kiddushs, for snow shoveling when necessary, for moving tables, for chair set-up and I am sure many other things I can t remember. I want to thank Michael Daling, Scott Levy, Stephanie Meadow, Stan Sadinsky, Dave Shulman and Mark Stein along with others who come to minyon for helping to move tables, chair set-up for some funerals and events and even some snow shoveling and salting. Thank you to Andy Bauer for his assistance with house repairs, snow shoveling and moving tables and chairs. Thanks to Lynn Bennett for her assistance with all the Friday night Oneg refreshment set up and clean up. Thank you to Harriet, Aaron and Marcie Thiela and Star Bennett for stepping up even more than usual to make sure our Pray-Eat-Sing dinners run smoothly. Thank you to all who attended those dinners and then helped with clean up while Mike has been out. Thank you to Sharon Slossberg and Stephanie Meadow for covering our Al-Anon meetings. It does take a village. I am hoping by the time you read this article, Mike will be back with us on a part-time basis only. The students at Adelbrook will continue to do what is asked of them. It will be wonderful for both us and Mike to be back to fill our needs. Unfortunately, there will still and always will be times those in our community will be asked to step up to assist, so please think about what you can do when next asked to step up. To paraphrase a popular quote: If you aren t part of the solution, please don t be part of the problem. As always, please remember to check out the rest of this Kolot for more events and other exciting happenings in the months to come. ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN We are so very blessed to have members/ friends who give to our synagogue community either financially or physically throughout the year. Their continued support helps to ensure the success of our synagogue, our Jewish community and the education of our children. With their generosity and all who give to our Annual Giving Campaign, Adath Israel continues to be a bee hive of activity. Our Board of Directors wish to thank the following who have sent in a donation: Nedra Schwarz Mirkin and Eileen & Michael Daling. With these tough economic times, we appreciate all the support that our members and friends have given and continue to give the synagogue. FEBRUARY S PRAY-EAT-SING WAS DIFFERENT! Eileen Daling Some months we designate our Pray-Eat-Sing dinners to honor or celebrate special individuals, new members and sometimes even a holiday. Last month s Pray-Eat-Sing was special in a different way. We invited members from Temple B nai Abraham, Meriden to join with our community for Shabbat. Many of our own members both frequent participants or new were able to be included in making them feel welcome and part of Adath Israel s family. We were joined by approximately 10 B nai Abraham members including Rabbi Kohn. Many stayed beyond dinner to enjoy dessert and sing along with Rabbi Haaz and our members. It was a delightful evening with a delicious dinner, desserts, and socializing with members from both our congregations. I want to thank all who donated to help defray costs, brought non-perishable food items for the Amazing Grace Food Pantry and helped with clean up. A BIG thanks as always to Harriet and Aaron Thiela for organizing all our Pray- Eat-Sing dinners and making sure they run smoothly and there is enough food for all. Thank you to Star Bennett for assisting them with serving and clean-up. Thank you to Lynn Bennett for providing many of the delicious desserts. Please think about joining us for another month s Pray-Eat-Sing. If you have never done so you are certainly missing a delightful way to usher in Shabbat. They are usually the first Friday of every month starting at 5:30 pm with dinner at about 6:30 followed by dessert and singing. Stay as long as you wish, can or are able.

Sharon Neuwirth I went to the monthly early riser's minyan this morning. I've been smiling all day. On the drive in I saw the beautiful sunrise. It was so pretty. It belied the weather due that day, which was snow, cold and rain. The morning minyan is filled with a wonderful group of men which feels like a good 'old boys club'. It's inclusive really. I was the only non member of the club as the sole female in today's group. There is such fun banter, witty repartee's and joking. You have to stay on your toes with these guys. We prayed, with a minyan, and then we breakfasted. There is also the shot of liquor with a prayer to start your day off right. This is my why. The why I go to services. There is the prayer, community and experience that warms my heart. I smiled all day.

11 11 OFFICE DEDICATION On Sunday, February 11th a Breakfast Dedication welcoming our lovely renovated office took place. The delicious breakfast was sponsored by Louise Feldman and family; many thanks to them and to the Howard Feldman Beautification Fund that enables contributions from all of you to complete worthy and wonderful synagogue projects. Once again Lynn Bennett's incredible desserts delighted all! The event allowed us to celebrate and reflect upon the many uses of the multipurpose space. It also provided another opportunity to thank the many who contributed their time and talents resulting in the truly terrific up-to-date office transformation. In describing our newly dedicated space Rabbi Haaz noted several references. One passage by Yi Fu Tuan from his work "Space and Place" particularly resonated. "A house is a relatively simple building. It is a place, however, for many reasons. It provides shelter; its hierarchy of spaces answers social needs; it is a field of care, a repository of memories and dreams." We look forward to continuing our beautification journey. What will be next? Stay tuned, Marge (Sadinsky) TODAH RABBAH, MARGE Every block of stone has a sculpture inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. Michelangelo We at Adath Israel are so lucky to have our very own Michelangelo Marge Sadinsky. Instead of stone, her medium is the synagogue itself. She sees the angel inherent in every space and works tirelessly to set him free. In the past six years she has coordinated beautification projects of the social hall, main hall, lighting in the main sanctuary, Holocaust memorial, small sanctuary doors, and now, the office. Marge s artistry goes beyond vision and persistence to the ability to make everyone involved feel valued. And she does it all under budget. Thank you, Marge. And now the question we re dying to know: What s next?
